Netflix has unveiled a thrilling teaser trailer for its upcoming global fan event Tudum 2025, offering some exciting previews of its future slate of shows and movies, including a fresh look at Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley's iconic 1818 Gothic novel about a scientist who brings to life a terrifying monster. The acclaimed filmmaker has been hard at work assembling his latest creation ahead of its release in November, and this new sneak peek of Frankenstein proves it's aliiiive!
The footage of Isaac's mad scientist pops up in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, following a title card for Frankenstein at the 0:41 mark in the video. He is illuminated in the clip by the glow of a burning fireplace, as he tosses aside what looks to be a newspaper and seemingly turns his attention to an envelope. It stops short of revealing what happens next,...

Talk about following a tough act. Sony's Until Dawn opened this week, days after Ryan Coogler's Sinners defied horror movie expectations both critically and commercially. Until Dawn will struggle to hold its ground in its debut weekend, while Sinners is expected to blaze past box office projections, like it did in its debut frame. Inspired by the video game of the same name, the movie opened to mediocre reviews and not-so-promising audience reception, which certainly doesn't bode well for its future. These missteps will ultimately work in Sinners' favor, as more casual audiences give it a chance thanks to the excellent word-of-mouth that it has been attracting.
Until Dawn currently holds a "rotten" 51% rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. But the film's audience score on the platform stands at a significantly superior 71%. A more accurate reflection of audience sentiment can be observed in the C+ CinemaScore that...

Fans of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession weren’t exactly thrilled to learn that a remake is on the way from Paramount and Smile filmmaker Parker Finn, but director Razka Robby Ertanto beat the remake to the punch with Possession: Kerasukan.
The loose Indonesian remake of the cult horror film has quietly been available to stream on Netflix for months.
The synopsis reads the same, “Returning from military duty, Faris is shocked to learn that his wife wants a divorce. He decides to investigate and discovers a sinister secret.”
Żuławski’s film recently received a new 4K restoration, “Banned upon release in 1981, Żuławski’s stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Sam Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming,...

The Fantastic Four are known are Marvel’s “First Family” but this summer, they will technically be newbies to the MCU. Of course, we’re using that term very loosely.
As the nickname denotes, the characters are true Marvel icons and the actors playing the core four are anything but newbies, each starring in massive projects before now. But more on that momentarily. For now, we’re here to tell you that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is starting to become a bit clearer, especially with the latest trailer.
Set to hit theaters on July 25, the film takes place “against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world” and follows the Fantastic Four as they take on the Devourer of Worlds — Galactus.
Here is who you need to know in the film.

David Gordon Green’s Halloween grossed $259 million against a meager $10 million budget when it was released in October 2018. If anything in Hollywood talks, it’s money, and suddenly, there was a lot of money sitting untouched in horror’s past. Scream came back to critical and commercial success. Texas Chainsaw Massacre topped the Netflix charts (but severed critics). Hellraiser popped by for a hello, and Candyman reintroduced an entire generation to a genre classic. Legacy horror isn’t a new phenomenon, but it is a curious one, especially given the age of the properties Hollywood looks to resurrect. Olwen Fouéré is fantastic, but she’s not Sally Hardesty. The prequel route solves those problems, and The First Omen shows them how it’s done.
In this era of dredging up the past for new audiences, nothing has done so quite as successfully as Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen. While...

I recently started a horror movie club with some friends from out of state. The ultimate goal is to slowly desensitize them and later convince them to join a wooded cult I intend to start in the next twenty years. But, in the meantime, it’s an excellent opportunity for me to share some of the horror movies I’ve been loving recently. Our next two films scheduled, for those interested, are Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen and Jason Yu’s Sleep. I’m not playing around as curator, okay?
For the inaugural meeting, I had a really hard time narrowing down the list of options. Few of them are horror lovers, and anyone who’s ever helped initiate a new genre fan knows how precise that first horror movie has to be. It’s a make-or-break moment, and through hours of deliberation, I thought of the perfect movie.

Death Of A Unicorn North America Box Office: Debut Weekend Update ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
The North American box office desperately needs a big hit as it has yet to witness one, and it has already been three months. Captain America: Brave New World has become this year’s highest-grossing film, but it is not a blockbuster. Meanwhile, Jenna Ortega’s Death of a Unicorn is also headed for a lukewarm opening in the United States. Keep scrolling for more.
Jenna Ortega is carving her niche in the horror comedy genre, thanks to her massive success in the Netflix series Wednesday. She did Tum Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last year, and it was also a financial success. Now, the young actress has returned with another horror comedy, but it seems this one lacks the charm of the Beetlejuice sequel. Two actors from TV’s buzziest shows hope to make some noise with a Netflix movie.
Michelle Monaghan, one of the stars of this season’s White Lotus, and Severance headliner Adam Scott have joined Robert De Niro in The Whisper Man, a crime thriller from Netflix.
James Ashcroft, who directed the haunting Kiwi thriller Coming Home in the Dark, is helming the feature, which is being produced by Agbo, the banner behind Netflix’s tentpole sci-fi movie, The Electric State.
Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco are producing for Agbo.
The story, based on the New York Times best-seller by Alex North, is set in motion when an eight-year old boy is abducted. The father, a widowed crime writer, looks to his own estranged father, a retired former police detective, for help, only to discover a connection with the decades-old case of a convicted serial killer known as “The Whisper Man.

It’s a well-known fact that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences don’t tend to favour genre films when it comes to shortlisting for their tentpole awards ceremony. It’s simply not their bag and that goes that double for anything that happens to fall into the disreputable slum of horror. Indeed — bar a few outliers like Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist or Get Out — scary movies rarely get a fair shake come Oscar season. Certainly not when compared to, say, glitzy biopics or period pieces that have a more prestigious air about them.
Yet, against all odds, the genre has done quite well for itself this year. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is dominating the technical categories, The Substance has found itself as an unlikely contender for four of the “Big Five” awards, and even Alien: Romulus has gotten a look in for its VFX work.

The 23rd edition of the Golden Schmoes voting period ended at midnight, and now we’ve got a full list of all of the winners chosen by our readers! The longest-running, fan-voted awards on the internet, the winners are always very interesting in that they reveal, in surprising ways, both the divide between fans and traditional voting bodies (like the Academy) and their similarities at times. This year, we didn’t have any record-breakers in terms of the most awarded films, with Deadpool & Wolverine earning 7 nods, while The Substance earned 5, and Dune: Part Two earned 4. The all-time champ for the most wins ever for The Golden Schmoes is still The Dark Knight, with 12 wins.
Both Dune: Part Two and The Substance are Academy favourites this year, while Deadpool & Wolverine was mostly overlooked. However, one movie that’s beloved by the Academy, Emilia Perez, was seemingly hated by our voters,...

The spy thriller follows a CIA field agent who is sent to bring in the ultimate CIA target who’s been out in the cold for decades.

Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder, and Jay Schuminsky will produce for NeoText, with Greg Cohen overseeing development for di Bonaventura Pictures.

Demi Moore is getting some of the most acclaim of her career, and it's thanks to her work in a genre that critics usually don't heap praise on. Moore has won several accolades for her performance in one of 2024's most important horror movies, The Substance, proving the impact of the body horror feature that blew everybody's mind last year. The most recent win was at the Critics' Choice Awards, where Moore won in the Best Actress category. During her speech, the actor was noticeably moved by the recognition, and used the opportunity to share some love for horror, the movie genre Hollywood usually forgets about every year when award season comes around.
In The Substance, Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a faded Hollywood star whose career has seen better days. Elisabeth is offered the chance to be relevant again and possibly save her career. She only needs to use "The Substance,...

Turning Ebon Moss-Bachrach into gravel and setting fire to Joseph Quinn is one thing, but the biggest challenge that "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" faces involves one of Marvel's most powerful villains: Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson). With the doors to the Baxter Building now open, the new trailer showed us what the Devourer of Worlds looks like — well, his silhouette and the back of his noggin, at least. Sure, it would have been awesome to catch a full glimpse of our new team of heroes going head-to-massive-head with the Devourer of Worlds, or maybe even a snippet of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) getting blown away by Ineson's world-rattling rasp. However, let's never forget that it could have been a whole lot worse. We might have been met with yet another giant Thanos-colored fart pretending to be one of the most terrifying entities in the universe.

At the controversial intersection of graphic violence in pop culture and women’s liberation in politics, you’ll find the taboo and too often overlooked subgenre of feminist body horror. In 2025, Coralie Fargeat, Demi Moore, and Margaret Qualley are changing all that with “The Substance”: a triumphant all-timer that was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
These extreme female-centric movies wield over-the-top gore and violence like exacting scalpels, peeling away society’s thick skin of deference and niceties to reveal an insidious underbelly of gendered violence, gendered shame, gendered betrayal, gendered hell. You’ll see flourishes of those themes in all kinds of movies, including last year’s “The First Omen” and “Alien: Romulus.” But movies like “The Substance” and Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch” — starring Amy Adams as a young mom who shape-shifts into a dog — make a meal of them for their movie’s entire duration.

The Oscars are meant to celebrate the best of the year, but they are just as infamous for the movies they ignore. Every year the Academy releases a list of films that can be nominated in most categories (this year’s list features 323 films) and a shorter list for best picture (207 in 2024).
Not all films make the lists. Movies that didn’t open in certain US cities and didn’t show in theaters for long enough, premiered on streaming, screened outside of the year, or didn’t pay the fees aren’t eligible. Not all films make the lists. The nominations are in for this year’s Oscars, but they’re reflective of an industry still stuck in its old ways. Some thoughts:
You either love or hate the awards season, but it’s hard to escape it. Awards of course don’t mean everything; they’re often indicative of a great marketing campaign and the production’s address book rather than actual quality.
Awards like the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and the Oscars do however offer a reflection of the state of the entire industry. And today’s Oscar nominations didn’t paint a pleasant picture.
There are some excellent films nominated this year, such as Conclave, Sing Sing and Anora. We’re not here to criticise these films for getting nominated, but to highlight what they tell us about Hollywood itself. That being said, it seems I watched a different film called Emilia Pérez than the awards voters.

Horror in 2024 proved that the genre thrives on reinvention, delivering a lineup as daring as it was unsettling. While the year saw its share of sequels and prequels, what stood out were films that reimagined old tropes with fresh perspectives. From slashers infused with arthouse aesthetics to nuns with evil pregnancies, horror expanded its boundaries. Themes of bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom resonated strongly, reflecting societal anxieties in the wake of seismic legal changes, while other films boldly tackled aliens, vampires, fanatics, and class disparity. The year wasn’t without its disappointments, but when horror soared, it truly transcended. Cinephiles flocked to both indie gems and boundary-pushing studio fare, underscoring a collective appetite for narratives that terrify and provoke. So let us take a look at the ten standout English-language horror movies of 2024—movies that not only chilled us to the bone but also made us think.

Despite starring in 2006's The Omen, Julia Stiles still has not seen The First Omen (2024). Stiles was the leading female star of the 2006 remake, which attempted to share Damien Thorn's story with a more modern audience. It was a financial success, earning $120 million on a $25 million budget, though it earned divisive responses from critics. Its prequel, The First Omen, earned far more love from critics, though it still struggled at the box office. Stiles did not appear in the prequel, as Rachel Hurd-Wood instead took the role of Katherine.
In an interview with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns, Stiles explained that she has little interest in the prequel. While she was partly delayed by the production of her upcoming romance, Wish You Were Here (2025), she also generally dislikes watching horror movies. She might have been willing to star in a horror remake, but watching it is something else entirely.

Brooke Shields is returning to the small screen. The actor, who first rose to fame as a child star in 1978's Pretty Baby and 1980's Blue Lagoon, will appear alongside Kim Kardashian in Hulu's new legal drama, All's Fair.
Per TV Line, Shields will also share the screen with three-time Emmy Award winner and eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close. All's Fair is described as a "high-end, glossy and sexy adult procedural set at an all-female law firm." Created by Ryna Murphy, the series will also feature Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash-Betts, Matthew Noszka, Teyana Taylor, and two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts. While character details are scarce, Kardashian has been cast as a successful divorce lawyer.

"I watched these tapes over and over again. They never got old..." And here we go! It's time for Ehrlich's video. One of the best 2024 recaps is a video countdown made by my colleague David Ehrlich (follow him @davidehrlich). He recaps his 25 best films of the year in a video edited together with footage and music from the films. It's one of the best looks back at the year, including footage from plenty of other movies from last year. Have you seen All of his favorites from last year? David's Top 25 of 2024 is as vibrant and fun as always, and you will likely agree with many of his top picks. I'm happy to see tons of underrated favorites: The Outrun, Between the Temples, Furiosa, The Last Showgirl, Close Your Eyes, Hard Truths, Juror #2, The First Omen, and others. Plus all the usual suspects from 2024: Nosferatu, The Substance, The Brutalist,...

The surprise success of Nosferatu means the timing couldn't be better for Hammer Horror to stage a glorious resurrection. Gothic horror movies like the classic Universal Monsters or the output of Britain's Hammer Films used to dominate the genre, once upon a time. Hammer franchises like the Christopher Lee Dracula movies or their Frankenstein series leaned into their Gothic origins, but the arrival of more modern, psychological chillers like Rosemary's Baby left the genre very dated in later years.
Modern horror tends to be defined by the likes of A24, but the occasional Gothic horror effort like Crimson Peak or even The Fall of the House of Usher occasionally breaks through. That's what makes the success of Robert Egger's Nosferatu remake so exciting. On the surface, the movie's retro feel and Gothic tone would have been considered offputting to modern viewers; instead, Nosferatu has grossed over $100 million worldwide (via...

2024 was a slightly odd year for horror movies. Audiences and horror fans were completely divided on some of the most critically acclaimed films of the genre. Many of the best horror films went completely under the radar and remain obscure. Arguably the biggest horror release (Nosferatu) was a remake of a century-old film. Most others were just decent, fun, but slightly forgettable films. That somewhat applies to the Carrie-Anne Moss and Douglas Smith movie, Die Alone, but its grim world-building and nasty ending prevent it from being forgettable. That, and a wonderfully memorable performance from Frank Grillo.
While Grillo led his own fun horror movie in 2024 (Werewolves), he only appears for a bit in the final act of Die Alone, but it's a crucial scene and a brilliant little performance from an actor who is usually a much bigger part of things. His inclusion is a testament to the film's strong writing and unusual narrative,...

After an explosive end to the previous episode, the latest chapter gives us more answers. Here’s our review of Video Nasty episode 4.
Nb: Spoilers lie ahead.
I think most of us can agree that episode 3 of Video Nasty was quite something. Not only did Fangoria Fangirl turn out to be a boy named Topher, but he and his brother, Joe, who turned out to be the driver from episode 2, took Zoe, Billy and Con as hostages at the end of the episode.
Things don’t exactly slow down in episode 4, titled Whatever It Takes, either. The episode begins two months earlier and gives us a little more context. The post office lady who led the trio to the house is in fact the brothers’ mother, Ethel. Ethel is a devout Christian and upon finding one of the video nasties in Topher’s sock drawer, she is horrified.

With a slew of excellent, critically acclaimed horror films in 2024, could awards bodies finally give them more consideration? A few thoughts.
Update: These are the kinds of updates we love to write. On 5th January, something remarkable happened. Demi Moore won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical Or Comedy for her performance in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance. There’s a whole conversation to be had whether The Substance is a comedy (or a musical), but more importantly, the occasion marked Moore’s first awards win, ever.
Moore gave a heartfelt, emotional speech on stage after picking up the award, and you can watch it below.
Moore’s win at the Golden Globes, arguably the second biggest awards ceremony in Hollywood, has solidified her as the frontrunner for the Oscar in March. She’ll still likely face fierce competition from the likes of Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman,...

Five years ago, following the lack of recognition at the Oscars for horror films, Trace Thurman and I created “The Hereditaries” (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission), a series of horror awards to acknowledge all of the great work being done in the genre.
We’re now up to the sixth annual Hereditaries (click here to vote), which celebrates the amazing diversity of horror films released in 2024.
Not unlike the 2023 Hereditaries when Evil Dead Rise and Saw X led the pack (hear who won here), the love has once again been spread out across a diverse list of films. Led by cultural phenomenon The Substance (9 nominations), there’s a great range of popular/main stream titles like Alien: Romulus and The First Omen (7 nominations each) as well as quiet sleepers like Strange Darling (6 nominations) and queer classics such as Femme (4 nominations) and I Saw The TV Glow (6 nominations).

Lauren Lavera is back and being terrorized by a very different kind of demonic force in The Fetus. Lavera leads the cast of the horror movie as Alessa, a woman who is shocked to learn she's pregnant and, with her boyfriend, begins investigating the source of her pregnancy, which turns out to be of a demonic origin. Alongside Lavera, the Fetus cast includes fellow horror genre icon and frequent Rob Zombie collaborator Bill Moseley as Alessa's father, Maddox, and Are You Afraid of the Dark? alum Julian Curtis as her boyfriend, Chris.
With just over two months remaining until the movie hits theaters, Shining Light Pictures has released the first The Fetus trailer. The video begins by introducing Alessa and Chris, with the former being surprised by the revelation from her doctor that she's pregnant, while also warning the latter that her body doesn't work in the way most others do.

Even though there’s still $2 billion to $3 billion missing in the post Covid annual domestic box office, there was plenty to be thankful for in 2024 which is coming in at an estimated $8.72 billion, -3% from 2023’s $9 billion. That figure is factored from Comscore and Deadline calculations.
First of all, many were expecting 2024 to final at $8 billion, so the fact that we’re $720M beyond that point in a year which was half wrecked by the aftermath of the strikes, is praiseworthy. There were fewer tentpoles in Q1, not to mention there wasn’t a Marvel Studios movie to fire up summer in early May (that didn’t come until late July with Deadpool & Wolverine which at $211.4M is the highest opening of the year).

It’s been quite the year for horror fans across the board, and there’s been no shortage of good content. We’ve seen a return for beloved or forgotten franchises, original horror, and horror TV. As someone who tries their best to keep up, I’ve seen a decent amount this year. Of course not everything, because accessibility to film festivals is an issue for me. And there’s still horror media that I haven’t seen quite yet. Why? My watchlist is ever-growing, and 2024 has been…let’s just say a time and leave it at that.
Narrowing down top 10 or top anything, is nearly impossible for me personally. However, I was able to do it and I crawled over mental glass for this task. I’ve decided to go with my favorite performances in horror TV and films from women. As of the time of writing this,...

From Dune: Part Two to Inside Out 2 to the long-awaited Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, 2024 has delivered some truly great sequels that managed to live up to their classic predecessors. As Hollywood increasingly relies on familiar franchises to ensure audiences will come out to movie theaters, sequels are becoming even more common. And those audiences are turning up to prove the studios right — eight of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024 were sequels — so sequels will probably continue to dominate multiplexes for years to come.
There have been some great prequels in 2024, too. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is an explosive new chapter in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic epic, The First Omen is a terrifying portrayal of the birth of Damien Thorn, and A Quiet Place: Day One went back to the day the sound-sensitive aliens landed. This year brought some sequels that divided fans and critics, like Joker: Folie à Deux and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,...

December means another movie year comes to an end. For all the talk of this being a weak one amid the bottleneck of post-strike releases and the halt on production altogether in 2023, 2024 was a rich one for independent and international fare, as well as (in some cases underappreciated) original studio fare. While a Barbenheimer-level multiplex groundswell didn’t quite land with “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” (with “Wicked” certainly taking that title on its own), there was still much to pore over, ponder, enjoy, and shell out for dating back to the beginning of 2024.
George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” didn’t quite hit with audiences (though IndieWire loved it) as stirringly as “Fury Road,” but it’s still one of the year’s best films and one critics continue to champion. Worldwide gross figures have been rounded up or down to the nearest million.
By and large, 2024 has proved to be a great year for horror films. The storied genre has produced several critically acclaimed outings, many of which have been lauded as some of the finest horror movies of the 2020s. From exciting new arrivals staking a claim as the genre's new kid on the block to electrifying sequels from prominent horror staples, the year's best horror movies have received rave reviews from fans and critics alike for their innate capacity to shock, disgust, and terrify in blockbuster fashion.
However, while it definitely doesn't hurt, all the critical acclaim in the world is no guarantee of commercial success in Hollywood. While many of the best horror movies of 2024 produced impressive commercial returns to match their glowing reviews, several prominent genre outings proved that good feedback decidedly wasn't a necessity for financial success.

What are the best movies of 2024? That’s incredibly debatable and entirely subjective, but I’ve given it my best effort to narrow the incredible slate of movies this year down to the top 20. From Marvel to musicals, it was a divisive year at the cinemas, so let’s get down to it. Here are the 20 best movies of 2024.

This article contains some spoilers for "Nosferatu."
For the most part, a trend that emerges during any particular year of cinema doesn't have anything genuinely competitive about it. Sure, there may be the "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano," "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" years, where highly similar projects are developed to compete with each other, but most trends that occur are less about an intentional duel and are more an indication of where the culture's head is at. Remember 2017, when a John Denver song turned up in no less than five separate movies? While there's no one catch-all explanation for such a thing happening, it's intriguing and potentially illuminating to identify the trend and see what, if anything, it speaks to in the contemporary real world.

Only a few films did a great job at the box office in 2024. While critically acclaimed movies like Deadpool & Wolverine and Dune: Part Two became blockbuster hits, others like Joker: Folie à Deux and Megalopolis faced heavy criticism and flopped at the box office.
There were even surprise hits like Inside Out 2‘s billion-dollar success and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘s franchise-topping numbers.

It should be no surprise that, as another year winds to a close, horror continued to dominate in 2024. Terrifier 3, for example, became the highest-grossing Unrated movie in box office history, throwing all the indie cinema rules out the window in the process. Longlegs caught everyone off guard, becoming Neon‘s highest-grossing film upon release in July, and streaming service Mubi smartly acquired the body horror movie The Substance, where it became the platform’s highest-grossing film at the box office.
That doesn’t even touch on the huge studio earners like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or Alien: Romulus. Yet the surprises extend well beyond how well horror performed at the box office; 2024 horror is defined by the way it refused to stay within its tidy genre bounds.

Well, 2024 is coming to an end, and what a year it’s been. So many things happened! Most of them were very, very bad — like “Madame Web.” But some of them were also kind of incredible and worth cherishing on their own magical terms — like “Madame Web.”
For 2024’s final edition of “In Review,” I thought that it could be a refreshing change of pace to focus on the latter category of things and highlight some of the random movie things that made me happy this year. The “Reggie” sequence in “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

There were so many incredible horror movies released in 2024 that it was impossible to see them all, and many may have fallen under viewers’ radars. While releases like Longlegs, The Substance, and The First Omen were hard to miss, plenty of streaming exclusives horrors or smaller-scale releases were highly underrepresented and did not get enough credit for the quality of the work. As a year filled with strange and unusual scary movies, 2024 had plenty to offer beyond the biggest box office successes.
There were several horror movies in 2024 that could become future cult classics as more viewers discover them and catch up on this year’s releases. Those who have been paying close attention will have been following the hype of beloved releases like I Saw the TV Glow, but not everyone has been tuned in to these kinds of word-of-mouth successes. From franchise releases to standalone triumphs, there are...

When it came to the movies that popped in multiplexes, 2024 was all about the sequels.
Whether audiences were returning for more Deadpool, Gru or Godzilla, recognizable properties were the big attraction at cinemas. Sequels — such as “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Despicable Me 4” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” — accounted for nine of the top 10 slots in terms of the year’s highest-grossing worldwide releases. And “Wicked,” the only non-franchise film to crack that elite group, couldn’t have been more familiar; the musical serves as an unofficial prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” and was adapted from a massively popular Broadway show that’s been consistently drawing crowds for two decades. This year’s reliance on follow-ups, spinoffs and offshoots stands in stark contrast to 2023 when the three biggest blockbusters, “Barbie,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Oppenheimer,” all arrived without a roman numeral in the title.
