Lucy Gaffney returns today with new single ‘Daydream In Tokyo’ and news of a new EP of the same name to arrive on 29th September via Nettwerk.
Gaffney is no newcomer to the power of patience and pure intention. The Belfast native began releasing solo material in 2020, with two well-received lo-fi offerings recorded by The Coral frontman James Skelly. Fast forward to 2023 and ‘Daydream In Tokyo’ luminously marks her arrival. The first single from her upcoming second EP, it’s a pure-cut indie-pop gem every bit as Technicolour as Gaffney’s journey along the way.
Written when she was living in Liverpool, the song is an escapist anthem with a trajectory that takes you on a journey. Across three minutes, it captures how a potent sense of place far beyond can – even in one’s mind’s eye – be an antidote to the mundane. But for Gaffney, dreaming of Tokyo...

Let’s take a trip back in time to the early 1980s at the height of David Bowie’s popularity.
MTV launched in 1981 with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The first video played was The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Quite appropriate.
MTV stands for music television because that’s what it was. MTV played music videos all day, every day — 24 hours of videos.
The network brought artists into our homes for the first time. We no longer just listened to the music; we watched it. This helped launch some of the biggest names in music of the time. It turned artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Boy George, and Duran Duran into stars.
David Bowie had some of his biggest commercial successes during this time, partially because of MTV.

Like all rock stars, David Bowie had a long history of partying and acting wild. However, in 1976, Bowie was arrested for drug possession, alongside fellow musician Iggy Pop. Here’s how it went down:

Bowie is known for his work on stage and screen, but his personal life was just as interesting. In 1976, the musician was arrested in a hotel in Rochester, New York after performing at the Community War Memorial.
He and three other people, including iconic punk musician Iggy Pop, were charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana. An article written at the time by the Democrat and Chronicle reported that police confiscated “about half a pound of marijuana,” which at the time was a “Class C felony,...

One of the greatest honors someone can receive from the United Kingdom is receiving a knighthood. However, not everyone wants the title. This included rock star David Bowie.
Who gets to be knighted by the British monarchy?
Anyone can be nominated for knighthood (or damehood for women), but they must meet the monarch’s criteria. The nominee will have made an important contribution to the UK and the world, inspiring and influencing others with their work. Only citizens of the UK can officially be made knights or dames. However, people from all over the world can receive an honorary version of the title.
The late Queen Elizabeth knighted almost 300 people during her reign. This included diplomats, politicians, business leaders, artists, humanitarians, and athletes. Some of the most notable people who received knighthoods over the last few years include Paul McCartney, Emma Thompson, Elton John, Sean Connery, Bill Gates, Angelina Jolie,...

New York City has partially reopened during the past few weeks, but concerts and other mass gatherings are still banned and there’s no timetable for when that might change. That’s why many people were a little surprised earlier this week when Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the MTV Video Music Awards would take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on August 30th.

"Your soul is outside of you and you must claim it." The Match Factory has unveiled the first official promo trailer for the film Siberia, premiering at the Berlin Film Festival this week. This is the latest feature made by acclaimed filmmaker Abel Ferrara and stars Willem Dafoe. The short description says it's "an exploration into the language of dreams." Dafoe plays Clint, a damaged man who has retreated to a wintry remote mountain cabin where he hopes to find serenity. He runs a modest cafe where the rare traveler or native of the region visits. But even in his relative isolation he cannot find peace nor escape. On a fateful evening, to confront himself, he begins a journey by dogsled to the world he once knew. He travels through dreams, memory and imagination in an attempt to find his true nature. Sounds enthralling? This is certainly a very dreamy,...

Parlophone Records announced Wednesday that “David Bowie: Loving the Alien 1983-1988,” the fourth in its series of boxed sets compiling the late artist’s work from 1969, will be released on Oct. 12. The era was Bowie’s most commercially successful period and includes the hit albums “Let’s Dance” and “Tonight.”
The 11 CD/15 LP set follows the formidable collections “Five Years (1969-1973),” “Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976),” and “A New Career in a New Town (1977-1982).”
It also includes a near-complete re-recording of Bowie’s 1987 album “Never Let Me Down,” which he’d often said he wanted to re-do, overseen by producer / engineer Mario McNulty with new instrumentation by longtime Bowie collaborators Reeves Gabrels (guitar), David Torn (guitar), Sterling Campbell (drums), and Tim Lefebvre (bass), as well as string quartet with arrangements by Nico Muhly and a guest cameo by Laurie Anderson on “Shining Star (Makin’ My Love).”

The French television series Hard. The global proliferation of film festivals has gathered a lot of clamoring over recent years. And despite their preponderance, many of the festivals are barely active, which makes it difficult to pin down their exact number. A rough ballpark figure can be put at slightly under 3,000. Nonetheless, the number keeps rising in both quantity and variety. Various kinds of genres, forms, and niches are also being covered on different levels of international and national gatherings. In the so-called “golden age” of quality or “peak" TV, episodic storytelling has become naturally assimilated into the breeding diversity of film festivals. “I was the very first of the three major film festivals to attempt that,” Marco Müller bragged reminiscing about the stint of screening HBO miniseries, Mildred Pierce, at the Venice Film Festival in 2011. “And I was sanctioned and criticized, and [the] media killed me for that,” he added.

An artist never finishes a piece of art, not really. At a certain point, a precise juncture of the creative process, they just stop working. They present the art to the public, for whom this work is—seems to be—completed, but for that artist ideas may continue to churn, what could have been done differently, what could still be done differently. They may consider the possibility of changes, of improvement. Think, for instance, of any book of collected essays or stories from a writer you admire: “These appeared, in slightly different form...” is a common preface found in the opening acknowledgements. Even precise wordsmiths like James Salter or Renata Adler tinkered with pieces after they were purportedly finished. For Salter, whose revisions were done longhand, entire new pieces of prose were born of earlier pieces, so severe were his second thoughts. He rewrote his entire 1967 novel The Arm of Flesh,...

Isabelle Huppert, Mariachi and a History Lesson: Cannes Celebrates Its 70th Year With a Lively Night
The Cannes Film Festival aims to show great movies, but it also knows how to throw a good party. That much was evident late at night in the waning hours of a glitzy dinner on Tuesday night at Port Pierre Canto to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the festival, when Salma Hayek surprised guests with a mariachi band.
The Mexican film luminaries in the room — including “Three Amigos” Guillermo Del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarriuto and Alfono Cuaron as well as actors Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal — all crowded around a single table to lead a boisterous crowd in numerous songs. They were joined by guests from all over the world, from directors Michel Hazanavicius and Paolo Sorrentino to Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker, 88-year-old French New Wave legend Agnes Varda and Hayek, who eventually led a conga line to the stage while shooting an iPhone video of the whole affair.

Cinematographers right out of film school often get their feet wet by shooting short films, music videos, and commercials – brief subjects with lower budgets and ample room to experiment and make mistakes. There was no such toe dipping for Bojan Bazelli. He was dunked directly into the river of cinema and legendary New York auteur Abel Ferrara did the baptizing. The Yugoslavia-born Bazelli was just out of film school in Prague when Ferrara came across the Dp’s thesis movie and tapped him to shoot his Romeo and Juliet variation China Girl (1987). Over the next decade Bazelli lensed 17 features, […]...

I Drink Your Blood (1970) is as old as I am. Unlike me, however, it shows very little wear and tear; a loud and proud exploitation horror diorama from an age when all boundaries of good taste and reason were pushed to the breaking point. If you only have room in your life for one rabies-infested satanic hippies movie, make it I Drink Your Blood.
This film is the blueprint for creating your very own grimy, crude, offensive B classic. First, you need a backer. There are perhaps few filmmakers more contradictory and ultimately more fascinating than Abel Ferrara. The American director, most famous for crime dramas like Bad Lieutenant and King of New York, could be compared to an older auteur like Nicholas Ray who blurred lines not just between genres, but between art and industry. While Ferrara has often been forced to work outside both Hollywood and the United States in the past decade of his career, with many of his most recent films never receiving proper American releases, he’s often down to tackle studio assignments. Despite his acceptance of studio productions and interest in genre fiction, Ferrara is also fascinated by morality and corruption in a way that links him to European filmmakers like Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In this sense, despite his films’ visceral and stark depictions of violence, sexuality, and substance use, he’s heavily informed by Catholicism,...

I used to believe, like Wenders or Godard, in the death of cinema. I accepted it as fact but never believed in it. The movies, that’s what I believed in—a dark room, shadows on a surface, a bunch of lonely people sitting down, looking up.
Like Leos Carax to Serge Daney, Abel Ferrara showed me there’d be cinema ‘til the end of the world.
***
At first I thought Abel Ferrara’s films were badly acted; I soon realized Ferrara would take bad acting with truth in it over a masterpiece of falsehoods. (Later I found out that Ferrara would, in Dangerous Game and New Rose Hotel, use one to create the other.)
I thought his films were too commercial. “Already captivated by cinema, I didn’t need to be seduced as well,” as Serge Daney put it. Hollywood in the 21st century is a highly sophisticated marketing ploy.
