Johnny Hardwick, who voiced the chain-smoking exterminator Dale Gribble for the entire 13-season run of the Fox animated hit King of the Hill, has died. He was 64.
Officers responding to a call for a welfare check found Hardwick dead in his home in Austin on Tuesday, police said, adding that the case is not being investigated as a homicide and that the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office.
Hardwick voiced Dale — the conspiracy theorist who lives next door to his best friend, propane accessory salesman Hank Hill (co-creator Mike Judge), and uses pocket sand when necessary — from 1997-2010 and was a writer, story editor and producer on the show as well.
The animators were said to have drawn Dale to look (and smoke) just like Hardwick, and he appeared on more than 250 episodes. He shared an Emmy for outstanding animated program in 1999 and was...

The set of Fox’s Sleepy Hollow had “grueling” working conditions, confusion and “creative floundering” among its leadership, and disparate treatment between its white male and Black female lead, according to Burn It Down.
The Hollywood exposé from Maureen Ryan, published by HarperCollins and which hit shelves on Tuesday, alleges that Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison — who played detective Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane, respectively — “did not want to have a whole lot to do with each other,” according to one source who worked on the show, allegedly resulting in Mison’s character’s famous “courtly” bow, because the co-stars did not want to hug each other.
That also allegedly translated to their onscreen narratives, according to showrunner Clifton Campbell, who told Ryan that Mison and Beharie “believed that the relationship between the characters should not evolve into a romantic relationship,” despite fan calls for one. (Neither Beharie nor Mison commented for the book.

Maureen Ryan, author of the upcoming Hollywood exposé Burn It Down, says a number of major networks, studios and entertainment companies responded with “crickets” when she reached out about allegations regarding their TV shows.
The veteran entertainment reporter and contributing editor at Vanity Fair appears on the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘sTV’s Top 5 podcast, where she speaks about her process for her new book, which explores patterns of harassment and bias in entertainment following an excerpt about the behind-the-scenes toxicity and bias on Lost.
During the more-than-30-minute discussion, Ryan details the experience of putting together around four years worth of reporting that covers a number of (some now ended) shows like Lost, Sleepy Hollow, The Goldbergs and Saturday Night Live. “One of the things that’s threaded through the book” that shocked her the most, she says, were the “crickets” she frequently got when she reached out about allegations.

The CW has canceled two more series as network owner Nextstar continues to whittle down its roster of scripted shows.
Kung Fu and Supernatural prequel The Winchesters — both produced by Warner Bros. TV, one of The CW’s former owners — won’t return to the network in 2023-24. Kung Fu ran for three seasons, while The Winchesters ends after a single season. The cancellations follow that of first-year show Walker: Independence, which comes from the network’s other former owner, CBS Studios, on Tuesday.
“As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions,” the network said in a statement. “We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of Kung Fu and The Winchesters for all their hard work, creativity and dedication.”
The network has renewed All American and the Jared Padalecki-led Walker for 2023-24. Sources say Nexstar — which has...

Jon Hayman, writer and producer on Curb, shared in a since-deleted tweet a photo of himself with David and executive producer Jeff Schaffer filming what he called the final episode. He wrote, “Maybe you love the show. Maybe you hate the show. Maybe you don’t give a shit. In any event, shooting the last scene of the last episode of the final season.”
Curb co-star Richard Lewis also tweeted about filming his last-ever scene of the series. “There I was a few hours ago in my trailer on location to shoot my...

The CW’s Gotham Knights has cast a pair of key recurring roles, with Ethan Embry and Sunny Mabrey joining the DC Comics drama.
The real-life married couple will play husband and wife on the series as well, with Mabrey debuting as Crystal Brown in the show’s fifth episode and Embry first appearing in episode six as Arthur Brown. In the comics, Arthur Brown is the alter ego of Batman villain Cluemaster.
“We were blown away by Sunny’s audition for Gotham Knights. It was immediately clear she had the expansive emotional range needed to play this deeply polarizing character,” series creators Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams said in a statement. “And then we were delighted to discover that Sunny’s husband is an actor who has many fans among our cast, crew and writers. Ethan’s brought Arthur to life in such rich, delightfully disturbing ways.

Adult Swim has cut ties with Justin Roiland in the wake of the news that the Rick and Morty co-creator was charged with felony domestic abuse in Orange County.
“Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland,” Adult Swim/Cartoon Network/Boomerang senior vp communications Marie Moore said in a statement Tuesday.
Adult Swim distributes Rick and Morty, the hit adult animation comedy that Roiland co-created and executive produced, and for which he voiced both the titular Rick and Morty. As The Hollywood Reporter reported on Jan. 17, Adult Swim isn’t even halfway through a massive 70-episode order for the show, one of the brand’s most popular titles, commissioned by the channel in 2018.
Sources say Rick and Morty is set to continue, with Roiland’s voice roles to be recast. Though Roiland will always be credited as co-creator, fellow co-creator Dan Harmon will now be the lone showrunner.

Warner Bros. Discovery has backed off of a plan to shutter workshops for ascendant writers and directors after industry backlash.
The company said in a statement Wednesday that it was transferring the Directors’ Workshop and Writers’ Workshop programs from its previous home at Warner Bros. Television to the corporate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion division after the conclusion of the current writers’ workshop, which ends in March 2023. Wbd added that the Dei unit will “grow the Workshop programs through its existing Pipeline Programs division.”
Right now, according to a Warner Bros. Discovery spokesperson, there are no plans to change the number of workshop participants — up to eight writers and eight to 12 directors — in the future.
Sources say that the current class of writers in the Wbtv workshops will be supported in their current home until March 2023. The new workshops will be managed at the...

John Oliver took a critical look at the Law & Order franchise on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight.
He started out by noting that creator Dick Wolf was a huge fan of Dragnet as a boy, which inspired him to create his long-running TV franchise as an adult (after he created a series of airline commercials now considered sexist).
After expressing alarm that several real-life officers of the law have said they have learned how to do their job by watching Law & Order and its spinoffs, Oliver turned his focus to Wolf. Oliver noted that Wolf has a “close, behind-the-scenes relationship with the NYPD, employing officers as consultants and boasting about the access he had.”
He cited an interview with an unnamed writer on the show noting that there was a feeling that if the police were portrayed in a negative light,...
