Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Cold War” leads the pack in this year’s European Film Awards, picking up five nominations after winning Best Director laurels earlier this year at Cannes. The black-and-white romance is followed closely by Matteo Garrone’s “Dogman,” Alice Rohrwacher’s “Happy as Lazzaro,” and Ali Abassi’s “Border,” all of which also picked up awards on the Croisette and now find themselves with four nods apiece.
This year’s ceremony takes place on December 15 in Seville, Spain. Here’s the full list of nominations:

Nominations are in for the 31st European Film Awards with previous winner Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War leading the pack. The romance drama won the Best Director prize in Cannes and Pawlikowski is up here for the same nod. Cold War, Poland’s Oscar hopeful this year, is also mentioned in the Best Film, Screenwriting, Actress and Actor categories.
Joining Cold War in the main race are a series of Oscar entries for the Best Foreign Language Film statue. They include Sweden’s wild Border from Ali Abbasi, Italy’s Dogman from Matteo Garrone and Belgium’s Girl by Lukas Dhont. The latter won the Camera d’Or in Cannes for best first film, and also scored the Best Performance nod in the Un Certain Regard section for lead Victor Polster who received a nomination today from the European Film Academy. Netflix acquired Girl for North and Latin America out of the festival.

"He's got more teeth than brains." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the animated White Fang, an updated take on the classic Jack London novel. This "animated feature film is a touching, adventure-filled tale about the life of White Fang, a wolf dog who's life unfolds from being a puppy in the wild to dog-fighting in Fort Yukon." The film is made by a Spanish-Luxembourgish filmmaker and it originally comes from an animation company in France, which is why the original release title is Croc-Blanc. This Us release from Netflix features an English-speaking voice cast with Nick Offerman, Rashida Jones, Paul Giamatti, and Eddie Spears. And it's already available now to stream if you want to watch it. The watercolor-esque animation style for this works well for animals, but it makes the humans look so jagged. Still might be good. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Alexandre Espigares' White Fang,...

The wild wolfdog isn’t the only thing that gets tamed in “White Fang,” Luxembourgish animator Alexandre Espigares’s ravishingly designed new take on the old Jack London chestnut: London’s hard-bitten survivalist narrative is in for a wholesome cleanup too. Ostensibly more faithful to the novel than Randal Kleiser’s 1991 live-action family adventure — rather than introducing a human protagonist, it wisely stays loyal to London’s predominant mutt’s-eye-view — it nonetheless retains some of that film’s Disneyfied plot adjustments, and tempers certain visceral details to puppydog-cute effect. That’s understandable given the junior target audience, though it’s uncertain whether smaller fry will be sufficiently enraptured by the film’s richly rendered Yukon environment to wait out its stately, staggered storytelling.
Either way, enterprising families can find out for themselves via Netflix, which scooped up Espigares’s film after a warmly received premiere in Sundance’s Kids sidebar.

There’s a wider range of indie movies joining the usual studio suspects in this year’s animation race. Disney/Pixar returns with “Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird’s superb advance on the original Oscar-winning 2004 superhero feature, while Disney Animation offers its own sequel to an Oscar-nominated original, “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” (November 21), and Universal/Illumination will try to make its return to awards contention with another Dr. Seuss adaptation, “The Grinch” (November 9).
Longer shots include Aardman’s stop-motion “Early Man” (Lionsgate) and two Sony Animation entries, sequel “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” from director Genndy Tartakovsky, and the Phil Lord & Chris Miller-produced “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (December 14), a likely holiday hit with a wild stylistic look directed by animators-turned-directors Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman and Peter Ramsey (“Rise of the Guardians”). Are Lord and Miller now considered worthy of Oscar contention, with experienced animators in the directors’ chairs?...

After numerous live action adaptations, White Fang, Jack London’s enduring 1906 novel about a wolfdog’s adventures in the Great White North, makes its feature animated debut in an international co-production that proves both visually stirring and dramatically glacial.
French filmmaker Alexandre Espigares takes full advantage of the pristine terrain, utilizing naturally-occurring light and shadow to create some truly lovely sequences. But the storytelling, wisely unfolding through the eyes of its four-legged protagonist, is less impressive in its depiction of human characters, which, at least in the guise of an American voice cast headed by Nick Offerman and Paul Giamatti, makes...

Jack London’s “White Fang,” the classic story of a wild wolf-dog rendered against the harsh environment of gold-rush Alaska, has spawned a number of cinematic adaptations — a well-regarded 1991 live-action feature starring Ethan Hawke, a 1993 animated series — but it’s in the hands of French animator Alexandre Espigares that the tale comes to its most vivid life. Adapted from London’s novel by a cadre of screenwriters (there are three listed in the film’s official press kit: Dominique Monfery, Philippe Lioret, and Serge Frydman), Espigares’ film captures the essence of London’s hard-knock story while reimagining it for a slightly younger audience (in short, it’s still traumatic, but not traumatic enough to drive away the audience who will also love it so very much).

I wasn't entirely impressed with this year's crop of films nominated for Best Animated Short at the 2014 Oscars. Disney's Get a Horse! was my favorite, but by a small margin as it is actually a little too busy for me, especially when viewed in 3D. Other than that, the category's eventually winner, the French short Mr. Hublot is easily the second best of the bunch, but the first half is a little too slow and perhaps I only found amusement in the second half because I'm a dog lover. I will, however, say this, the animation is impeccable. Well, now you can judge for yourself. I have to assume a lot of you have seen Get a Horse! based on the fact Frozen has made over $1 billion worldwide, suggesting more than a few people saw it, but now you can also watch Mr. Hublot directly below. The film was written...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Yes! Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own. Steve McQueen, you charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this position. This has been the joy of my life. Los Angeles, March 3: Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee's "Frozen" was given the award for the best animated feature film at the 86th Academy Awards held here Sunday evening.
"Frozen" narrates the tale of a fearless princess' adventurous journey to find her estranged sister, whose has the power to create ice and snow. It had been honoured with a Golden Globe in January.
"Mr Hublot", 11-minute short film, was honoured with Oscar for the best animated short film.
Written and directed by Laurent Witz and codirected by Alexandre Espigares, the short film is about Mr Hublot, who lives in a world where characters made partially.

Walt Disney may have won a record 22 Oscars but none of them was for his most famous creation, Mickey Mouse. This year, it was widely expected that the retro "Get a Horse" -- which mixed retro drawings of Mickey and his pals with 3-D technology -- would win Best Animated Short. However, "Mr. Hublot," by first-time nominees Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares, pulled off an upset. Their film centers on an obsessive compulsive man who lives an isolated life until his life and organization abilities are turned upside down with the arrival of a rescued dog. Mickey's eight losses in this race began with the inaugural one in 1932 when "Mickey's Orphans" was bested by another Disney toon, "Flowers and Trees." His unlucky seven other bids were: Building a Building" (1933), "Brave Little Tailor" (1938), "The Pointer" (1939), "Squatter's Rights" (1946), "Mickey and th...

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.

Welcome to Oscar Week!
From Tuesday through Saturday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences invites movie geeks each night to get an up close look at the various categories and nominees.
Kicking off the week was the “Oscar Celebrates: Shorts” event on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Actor Kevin Pollack hosted the evening with screenings of all the 2013 Oscar-nominated films in the Animated and Live Action Short Film categories, plus onstage discussions with the filmmakers.
So what exactly qualifies a film into these categories? According to AMPAS rule 19, “a short film is defined as an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.” It goes on to say, “An animated film is created by using a frame-by-frame technique, and usually falls into one of the two general fields of animation: character or abstract.

The French “Mr. Hublot” creates an utterly real yet completely fantastical world, a palpable steampunk environment of gorgeous mechanical loveliness. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

Silent movies are alive and well… in animated shorts. And one of the nominees this year for the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film is an explicit throwback to the earliest days of cinema. Ironically, the very first Mickey Mouse short, in 1928, was in fact one of the first sound cartoons, but Disney’s black-and-white, 1920s-retro “Get a Horse!” [IMDb] is as near to a silent film as shorts get these days. (If you’ve seen Frozen, you’ll remember this short from the preshow.) There’s next to no dialogue as Mickey, Minnie, and Co. enjoy a hay ride that goes awry, though there are plenty of goofy sound...
