There’s almost no such thing as a perfect horror anthology. By definition, the quality of the stories is going to vary so that even in those beloved anthologies where every segment might be considered good—your Trick ’r Treats and Creepshows, for example—we tend to rank our favorites and least favorites. There’s an old maxim that states that any anthology is only as good as its worst segment, but that’s an ideology to which I’ve never subscribed. My experience has always been that the good segments tend to stand out, while the weaker ones melt away in my memory. The beauty of even an uneven anthology is that each new segment offers a blank slate: a chance to course correct after a weak entry or to build on a strong one.

The week I saw Fetish Factory, the new feature from writer/director Staci Layne Wilson, I also rewatched Anna Biller’s The Love Witch and Hillary Clinton lost her chance to be the first female president of the United States. I was very much in the mindset of seeing art through a specific prism of gender politics and sexism, which may have colored my reading of the movie. At the same time, I don’t know if that’s true. This is a movie with gender politics very much on its mind. You don’t make a movie about the male customers of a sex fetish club being turned into bloodthirsty zombies without wanting to say something about the relationship between men and women.

I've broached the subject of Jeepers Creepers 3 and Victor Salva here before, first with an op-ed shortly after the project was announced and most recently during a discussion with filmmaker, author and Dread Central West Coast contributor Staci Layne Wilson once production on the film was rumored to be imminent (you can watch our convo above or below). The crux of the issue involves Salva's 1988 criminal conviction on charges of sexually molesting the 12-year-old star of his 1989 debut feature Clownhouse -- for which he served 15 months of a 3 year sentence -- and his continued Hollywood career in spite of that horrendous act. (Salva has directed eight feature films since Clownhouse, including the first two installments of the Jeepers Creepers series.) While Salva has not re-offended, he is still rightly viewed with suspicion when it comes to working with underage actors; still others feel he should never be allowed to direct again.

As reported by Bloody Disgusting earlier this week, Jeepers Creepers 3 is looking to start production in Vancouver next month, with Gina Phillips allegedly set to reprise her role from the first movie. And yet many fans may not be familiar with the criminal past of franchise director Victor Salva: a 15 month prison stint for sexually molesting Nathan Forrest Winters, the 12-year-old star of his 1989 horror film Clownhouse. Since JC3 was first announced, outrage has been brewing over Salva's involvement, but is it possible to separate the artist from the art? For some, it clearly isn't; for others, knowledge of the director's terrible act won't preclude them from enjoying the franchise's long-awaited third entry. On this week's episode of HitFix's new horror chat series Nightmare Fuel, I discuss the complex issue with horror filmmaker, author and Dread Central West Coast contributor Staci Layne Wilson, in addition to the forthcoming Jacob's Ladder remake,...

Firebreathing Films has unleashed the first peek to its upcoming bloody Bigfoot thriller The Fiancé.
I don't know what I was expecting, but I was genuinely surprised by the trailer. The production is top notch, camera work is stellar and it has certainly piqued my interest. Check it out for yourself below the official details.
You can also check out our recent interview with writer-director Mark Allen Michaels here.
From The Press Release
Starring Carrie Keagan (“Fetish Factory”), Douglas Tait (“Star Trek”), and Curt Lambert (“Mind Rage”), the trailer shows how Michael (newcomer Dallas Valdez) goes from an in-love fiancé to a “stone cold killer” when his bride-to-be Sara (Keagan) is bitten by Sasquatch (Tait). Between the gory mayhem, we see there’s a mystery in the lovers’ back story – what kind of a deal has Michael made with Sara’s father?

In the gritty, sexy and scary old school tradition of exploitation and grindhouse art comes the kick-ass poster for Blanc/Biehn Productions’ latest fright flick, Fetish Factory, created by Los Angeles based artist Aaron Kai.
Aaron Kai’s meticulously executed, photorealistic film-inspired artwork has been featured globally from Hollywood to Tokyo to commemorate high-profile landmark events including Blade Runner: The Final Cut 25th Anniversary, The Bette Davis Centennial, and the Jules Verne Film Festival.
Fetish Factory is written and directed by Staci Layne Wilson, based on a story by Lony Ruhmann. The plot centers on pin-up vixens vs. bloodthirsty zombies, and is set in post-apocalyptic Hollywood. The film stars Carrie Keagan (Reno 9-1-1!), Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End), Jennifer Blanc (Everly, Havenhurst, Hidden in the Woods), Daniel Quinn (Rubber), Stephen Wastell (Criminal Minds), Jenimay Walker, (Serpent’s Kiss), Tristan Risk (American Mary), Emma Julia Jacobs (Hitchcock...

Those Guardians of the Galaxy continued to rule the box office this Labor Day weekend. So where did that leave the horror offering As Above/So Below and the 30th anniversary re-release of arguably the most influential horror comedy of a generation?
As Above/So Below managed to continue two trends at once. First, the Paris-set Universal/Legendary horror film marks the latest found footage movie promoted in such a way as to hope you didn't know that going in. Just how on the outs is the found footage genre that Hollywood marketers are now going out of their way to downplay the format?
As Above/So Below also continues the trend of wide release horror movies in 2014 not exactly lighting the box office on fire. Falling near the middle of the pack at #5 with an estimated $10.3 million for the Labor Day weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, that's just...

As Above/So Below opens today, and reviews (including mine and Uncle Creepy's) are mixed. Before rendering your own verdict, hear from director/co-writers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle about their experiences making the film.
Dread Central: When I walked into the screening of As Above/So Below, I was not prepared for a modern twist on an old fashioned archeologist vs. a curse adventure. Then there’s this Satanic element and sort of a body count/slasher vibe, too. How did you manage to put everything in there and still make it very linear?
John Erick Dowdle: You know, we just trusted our intuition. It just felt right to us, more than anything else. It was funny; this movie moved so quickly, which is a rare thing. We had to stay intuitive and maybe a little less intellectual. I think that really served this movie really well.
