Metz have announced their new album, Up on Gravity Hill, along with a 2024 headlining tour. The Canadian band’s first full-length in four years arrives on April 12th via Sub Pop, but you can hear the new singles “99” and “Entwined (Street Light Buzz)” now. Stream the tracks below.
Engineered by Seth Manchester, Up on Gravity Hill features guest performances from Amber Webber of Black Mountain and composer/string arranger Owen Pallett. Pre-orders are ongoing.
The supporting international tour kicks off its North American leg in Boston on April 17th and will feature dates in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and more before heading over to the UK and Europe beginning in mid-August. See the full itinerary below.

You’ll forgive us for not seeing everything at the Toronto International Film Festival, some things fall through the cracks, and arguably the biggest, one we’re still dying to see is “Dream Scenario” starring Nicolas Cage. It’s a surreal A24 comedy starring Cage, co-produced by Ari Aster (“Beau Is Afraid”), with the music made by occasional Arcade Fire musician Owen Pallett (aka Final Fantasy).

Woody Harrelson (True Detective) and Owen Wilson (Loki) have signed on to star in the coming-of-age thriller Lips Like Sugar, Deadline reports. Brantley Gutierrez will be making his feature directorial debut on this one after more than a decade of working on short films and music videos.
Scripted by Anthony Tambakis (Warrior), Lips Like Sugar is said to be set during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and is apparently “loosely based on a true story”. It’s also set “against the backdrop of the punk and skate worlds of West Los Angeles.” Here’s the synopsis: As the new friendship of two teenage girls from different walks of life unfolds and city officials focus on the Olympics, the lives of two former detectives (Harrelson and Wilson) become intertwined when one of the young girls goes missing.

Often, films that cover domestic abuse will solely show the brutality of the situation without diving into the psychological and emotional aspects at play. Seldom are scripts bold enough to ask and answer the question: Why does she stay? In these fictional depictions, the decision to leave a romantic partner who treats their significant other poorly seems like the most obvious choice in the world. Gone is the nail-biting and second-guessing mentality that comes with years of being told you're wrong, you're ungrateful.
No, we don't see suggestive smirks, positive interactions, or glimmers of flirtation between the abused and abuser that blur the lines between affection and controlling tactics. The men are bad news, and this spectacle-like take on domestic abuse disempowers the women characters in these relationships, chalking their situation up to poor judgment calls. Anyone who has experienced intimate partner abuse knows things don't start at level 11 — there are incremental degrees of manipulation,...

A few minutes into “Alice, Darling,” audiences may be reminded of how 2020’s “The Invisible Man” opened: Anna Kendrick creeps out of bed at dawn, taking pains not to wake the partner we briefly assume she’s about to flee. But whereas that Elisabeth Moss vehicle was a monster movie given heft by its abusive-boyfriend backstory, director Mary Nighy’s feature debut puts a woman’s difficult exit from a dangerous relationship front and center. This is a quietly powerful drama about psychological manipulation and damage, receiving a year-end qualifying run at the AMC Sunset 5 in West Hollywood on Dec. 30 before expanding to AMC theaters nationwide on Jan. 20.
In an unnamed city, Alice (Kendrick) arrives late and departs early from an overdue night out with best friends Sophia (Wunmi Mosaku) and Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn). We can tell she’s distracted, even fearful, sneaking away to the bathroom to tear her...

‘Alice, Darling’: Anna Kendrick Thriller Getting Oscar-Qualifying Run Before 2023 Theatrical Release
Exclusive: Lionsgate is giving an Oscar-qualifying run to the psychological thriller Alice, Darling on December 30 before the pic’s nationwide release in 2023.
The film, which made its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival where it notched a near 90 on Rotten Tomatoes, stars Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick as a woman woman pushed to the breaking point by her psychologically abusive boyfriend, Simon. While on vacation with two close girlfriends, Alice rediscovers the essence of herself and gains some much-needed perspective. Slowly, she starts to fray the cords of codependency that bind her. But Simon’s vengeance is as inevitable as it is shattering – and, once unleashed, it tests Alice’s strength, her courage and the bonds of her deep-rooted friendships.
Alongside Kendrick, Alice, Darling stars Wumni Mosaku, Kaniehtiio Horn and Charlie Carrick. The pic reps the directorial debut of Mary Nighy, and was written by Alanna Francis and produced by Katie Bird Nolan,...

The uptight friend, the quirky leading lady, the semi-rebellious college radio DJ who harnesses the melodic potential of red solo cups: These are the roles Anna Kendrick has been relegated to for most of her career, an eclectic mix of largely comedic vehicles. Even after the actress nabbed an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in Up in the Air, she seemed, still, more likely to portray a Beca than a Natalie.
But in Mary Nighy’s emotionally disquieting debut Alice, Darling, Kendrick transfixes, affirming that she has always had depth and range. The actress plays Alice, a woman made vulnerable and emotionally battered by an insidiously abusive relationship. Kendrick starts by channeling a fragility, as if Alice were made of china and any sudden moves from her boyfriend Simon (Charlie Carrick) or friends Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku) and Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) could shatter her.

This review of “On the Count of Three” was first published on Jan. 29, 2021, after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
“On the Count of Three” opens with two friends nervously trying to commit a joint murder-suicide, and it’s the feature directorial debut of comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Thankfully Carmichael, who also stars, never loses sight of the real pain at the story’s center, even as he’s also managing to find the laughs.
Working from a screenplay by TV writers Ari Katcher (“The Carmichael Show”) and Ryan Welch (who co-created “Ramy” with Katcher and Ramy Youssef), Carmichael already feels comfortable behind the camera, which should come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen his HBO documentary shorts about his family and childhood neighborhood. With “On the Count of Three,” he takes on a challenging mix of tones, and mostly succeeds as the story segues from the tragic...

With it being nearly eight years since the release of Spike Jonze’s Her, we expected this is a headline that would arrive sooner, but Arcade Fire and Owen Pallett’s score will finally be getting a release for the first time.
The Oscar-nominated score will be coming from Milan Records and arriving on March 19 for streaming and on vinyl and cassette. “It was an honor to be asked by our friend Spike Jonze to work on the Her score,” Arcade Fire’s Win Butler said. “There is a mysterious alchemy in the way sound and picture work together, notes and moods shifting and reacting to one another like a kaleidoscope… And even in the absence of visuals, the emotional landscape still remains. We hope you have a moment of stillness to get lost in the music as we did writing and recording it.”

The physical experience of the cinema in 2020 has been a fragmented stop and start scenario. Not being able to visit the cinema has been discouraging, but in putting this mix together I was reminded, pandemic aside, there have been new movies worth getting excited about and distinctive music and sounds to accompany them. Over the 1 hour, 39 minute run time this mix stops and starts in different mood zones, symmetrical to the year it represents. Between pieces of original score and soundtrack are voices and sounds, sometimes of hope, sometimes more sinister. Meandering in pace, this mix is a snapshot of feelings, as quickly as they come they move into different territory. We open with extracts from Garrett Bradely’s Time, these echoes of childhood and family swirl forward years as if inside a sonic time capsule. We hear voices weave in and out, “lots of things changed since the beginning of this tape.

On September 26, 1991, the world watched as eight visionary hippies dressed up as cosmonauts and sealed themselves inside the massive, environmentally self-sustaining, $150 million glass vivarium where they would live together for the next two years. The facility was dubbed “Biosphere 2,” a man-made sequel to Earth that would offer a microcosmic glimpse of our impact on the planet, and explore the possibility of replicating it elsewhere in the galaxy. A non-profit that was populated by the members of an experimental theater troupe and funded by the heir to a Texas oil fortune, the project was hailed by some as “the most exciting scientific undertaking since we launched toward the moon,” and derided by others as “New Age drivel.” It was beautiful, it was flawed, and it ended — as America’s most aspirational undertakings often do — with Steve Bannon destroying the whole thing out of spite.

More or less working on what we can imagine was a bewildering docu project for the past four years, NYC based filmmaker Matt Wolf‘s Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project should have docu programmers salivating in 2019. Wolf was at Sundance with his 2014 short, It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise and 2017’s Bayard & Me, but he is best known for Wild Combination and Teenage. Composer Owen Pallett came onboard to the music component.

For the last few years, I’ve taken it upon myself in my capacity as Sos co-founder and eternal DJ to gather up some of my favorite tracks of the year, along with excerpts of dialogue and scoring from some of my favorite films (and, this year, TV series!) of the year, and cram it into a mix that could fit onto a hypothetical CD-r. But since this has been the year of the mixtape (hello Guardians of the Galaxy, Mommy, and Boyhood), and since there’s been such an overwhelming bounty of great music to choose from, I opted for a “C120″ format – two “sides,” one hour each. Since non-film music is the one area of pop culture Sound on Sight will (hopefully) never devote a subsection to, it’s the one instance I allow myself every year to flex my geekery in this area.

Will Arcade Fire member Will Butler have as much success without his giant band? The singer, brother of Af frontman Win Butler, recently performed a 10-song set of new material in New York City, and now he's reportedly planning to release the songs on his first solo album. In anticipation of the concert, the venue's website stated that Butler is "currently finishing up his debut album." An Arcade Fire spokesperson later confirmed the news, saying, “[Will]’s working on tracks for release at some point in the future, maybe on Merge Records, and he keeps updating on their socials." Later, Merge Records announced that it will indeed release the record, titled "Policy," sometime next spring. Butler previously teamed with Owen Pallett for the music to Spike Jonze's "Her," which was nominated for Best Original Score at 2013 Oscars. Arcade Fire has released four acclaimed albums on Merge over the last ten years,...

Yeah, we know. With the movie winding down its multiplex, the Oscars handed out (with a win for Spike Jonze for Best Original Screenplay), "Her" seems a bit like old news. There is still one piece of unfinished business left circling the tech based romantic drama—the excellent score by Arcade Fire. The Oscar nominated work is still Mia in the form of an official release, but it seems it could be coming down the line. It crossed our radar at the time, but then we kinda forgot about it, but a couple weeks back just before the Oscars, Owen Pallett chatted with The Canadian Press about his work on the movie, and in particular, his last minute arrival to help put the finishing touches on the work. “It seemed that Spike was not feeling the sort of futuristic approach to the score and wanted something that was a little bit more emotional,...

Gravity may be set in space, but it achieved a landslide at the 86th Academy Awards, taking seven Oscars, while 12 Years a Slave went home with three.

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

Hard-hitting slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor becomes first film from black director to win top Academy award
• How the night unfolded
• Full list of winners
12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. It’s counterintuitive to the way we’re making films today. It’s a real achievement by Mr. McQueen here. I love this movie. I think it’s important. The 2014 Oscar Awards have been handed out and it to no real surprise... there were few surprises as 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley) while Gravity, unsurprisingly, ended up taking home the night's largest number of wins with seven, none bigger than a Best Director win for Alfonso Cuaron. In the acting categories the only category that seemed up for grabs was Supporting Actress, but as I said, that went to Lupita, which may have something to do with Jennifer Lawrence wearing red... I learned on E! that no one wearing red has ever won the Oscar. Yeah, that's hard-hitting journalism right there. Dallas Buyers Club co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Best Actor and Supporting Actor respectively while Cate Blanchett took home her second Oscar, winning Best Actress for Blue Jasmine. With every awards season comes a flood of “best of” compilations and top ten lists, but film scores can be tricky in that department. After all, different composers are operating on different levels, each one working toward a separate goal in his or her respective picture. Brian Tyler aims for something propulsive and heroic in Iron Man 3, while Saving Mr. Banks’ score apparently features Thomas Newman doing his best Thomas Newman impersonation. Lists can be tough when scores operate so independently of one another
So without further ado, I present my favorite film scores from 2013. Unranked:
Philomena – Alexandre Desplat
Saying Alexandre Desplat likes himself a mean waltz is like saying Johnny Depp likes himself a little eye makeup: they’re both gross understatements. Scoring Stephen Frears’ loose adaptation of Philomena Lee’s search for the son she was forced to give up at birth, Desplat makes his affinity abundantly clear with the title track,...

The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Oscar night, Steve McQueen.s .12 Years a Slave. will take home the top prize but Alfonso Cuaron.s .Gravity. will win all the technical awards including Best Director. Quite fitting since one provoked (.12 Years.) and the other entertained (.Gravity.).

Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Superman. You can’t think of these adventures without instantly hearing the music. Film scores have always been the emotional heart of the story that forever resonates with an audience.
For the first time as part of its annual Oscar Week events, the Academy presented a live “Oscar Concert” celebrating this year’s nominated scores and songs.
In what was a glorious program for music lovers, the huge audience at UCLA’s Royce Hall experienced an unforgettable night. The Academy’s 80-piece orchestra performed suites from each of the nominated original scores and prior to each piece, all the nominated composers participated in a brief conversation with film critic and radio host Elvis Mitchell about creating their scores.
Musician, Common, was the perfect host for this historic event. After a enthusiastic introduction by the actor, the evening began with Academy Governor Charles Fox conducting Jerry Goldsmith’s “Fanfare for Oscar.

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.
Even the avid pundits are in a muddle and would give their eye teeth to see the final tallies. Will hopefuls Leto,...
