MTV’s initial round of performers for this year’s Video Music Awards show is a chart-topping fivesome consisting of Lil Nas X, Lorde, Olivia Rodrigo, Machine Gun Kelly and Camila Cabello.
Many more will be coming, of course, to fill out a three-hour slot on the way to the telecast going live Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.
Plans for an audience for the show have yet to be announced. Last year, the VMAs show went to a pre-taped, studio-set format after having to nix its initial Barclays Center location due to pandemic conditions. This year’s telecast is — so far — set to make good on that rain check and actually broadcast from the arena in Brooklyn, though it’s believed that producers are still evaluating options about what kind of crowd the live event might play to.

The MTV Movie and TV Awards will air a special awards ceremony recognizing the “Greatest of All Time” in film and television moments — or at least the best dating back to the ’80s.
Vanessa Hudgens will host the 90-minute awards broadcast that will air on MTV December 6, and it will honor the biggest and best moments in movies and TV from the ’80s until now, because apparently nothing good came out until 1980 anyway. (MTV launched in 1981.)

MTV has finally revealed its plans for this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards. Instead of a regular show honoring the year’s best entertainment, the network has announced that this year’s edition will instead focus on the best moments in film and TV over the past 40 years.
“MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time,” which premieres Sunday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. on the network, will be hosted by Vanessa Hudgens. The 90-minute special, produced by Den of Thieves, “will pay homage to the best of the best from the most beloved actors to scene stealing moments” from the 1980s until now, the network said.
The special will include mostly new material, along with some clips from previous MTV Movie & TV Awards shows. The special also promises “exclusive footage of the most anticipated 2021 releases.” Performers and honorees will be announced later.
