Things are looking up -- way up -- for the latest film from the Greek cinematic maestro of weird, Yorgos Lanthimos. "Poor Things" had already been picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight before it made its way to the 80th Venice International Film Festival, but Searchlight recently pushed the film from its September 8 release date back to December amid the historic and ongoing WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes. If the studios had seen fit to part with less than 1 percent of their annual revenue to give the writers and actors a fair deal, many of us might have already seen "Poor Things" by now. But now we have all the more reason to look forward to it.

The 2023 Venice Film Festival is underway, and while the Hollywood strikes have kept the bulk of the stars from attending the lauded fest, the red carpet isn’t entirely devoid of actors and has been host to a number of filmmakers from Wes Anderson to Michael Mann (directors are not on strike). Actors like “Ferrari” star Adam Driver were able to attend after receiving an Interim Agreement from SAG-AFTRA that allows for independent productions that adhere to SAG-AFTRA’s terms to move forward during the strike.
This gallery will be updated as the festival continues, but right now peruse red carpet photos featuring Driver, Mann, Anderson, Patrick Dempsey, Caleb Landry Jones, Jane Campion, Mads Mikkelsen, Anna Diop, David Fincher, Sofia Coppola and more.

The Venice Film Festival kicked off its 80th edition Wednesday night on a somewhat muted note, with the dual Hollywood strike casting a pall over the glitz and glamour that typically exemplify the world’s oldest cinema fest. Instead of Luca Guadagnino’s Zendaya starrer Challengers — which was scheduled to open Venice pre-strike, getting pulled amid the walkout — Venice was forced to go with a more locally focused feature, Edoardo De Angelis’ Italian World War II submarine drama, Comandante.
Italian actress Caterina Murino hosted the festival’s grand opening ceremony with a retrospective spanning eight decades of Venice cinema, featuring clips highlighting past Golden Lion winners. The audience burst into applause at the sight of the late William Friedkin, whose last film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, will premiere on the Lido this year.

In an alternate universe, Zendaya would be breaking the Internet with her red carpet fashion as she promoted Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” the movie that was supposed to open the 80th annual Venice Film Festival.
But the SAG-AFTRA strike made it impossible for the tennis movie, starring one of the world’s buzziest movie stars, to come to the Lido.
So instead, Venice kicked off with World War II drama “Comandante” by young Italian auteur Edoardo De Angelis. The movie, mostly set on a submarine, landed a brief 90-second standing ovation as actor Pierfrancesco Favino — who plays naval officer Salvatore Todaro — took a bow.
Indeed, the lack of star power was strongly felt at Venice opening night. The size of the crowds that lined up outside the Sala Grande Theatre was modest, and the biggest cheers went to Damien Chazelle, who is presiding over the Venice jury. Jane Campion,...

Updated with more details: The 80th Venice Film Festival officially kicked off Wednesday evening with the world premiere screening of Edoardo De Angelis’ Italian World War II submarine drama Comandante. Running in competition, the film took over the slot vacated by Luca Guadagnino’s tennis drama Challengers, which backed out of the spot amid the actors strike.
Before the Pierfrancesco Favino-starring movie unspooled to a warm welcome and a brief post-credit standing ovation, Italian actress Caterina Murino launched the festival’s opening ceremony featuring a retrospective covering the 80 years of the event. That included glimpses of previous Golden Lion and awards winners, with the audience erupting when the late William Friedkin appeared in the montage.

Milan’s venerable La Scala opera house on Monday will stage a globally distributed TV gala event featuring its mask-wearing orchestra in the empty venue and a multimedia medley of arias and other performances by opera, ballet, pop music and screen stars, substituting its canceled season opener.
Due to the pandemic, La Scala has been forced to call off its traditional December opera opening, among the top events on Europe’s cultural calendar, for the first time since the Second World War. Until recently, the planned opener was Gaetano Doninzetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” with U.S. soprano Lisette Oropesa set to perform the title role.
Oropesa (pictured) would have been the first American to perform the La Scala opening since Maria Callas in the 1950s.
Instead she will be part of a lineup comprising 24 star talents, also including Placido Domingo, tenor Juan Diego Florez, dancer Roberto Bolle, Sting and Italian actor Caterina Murino,...

In Voice From the Stone, Emilia Clarke's character faces a threat much different than the ones she encounters as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, and you can get a tease of what's to come in Momentum Pictures' new trailer for the atmospheric horror film.

"The voice is real." Momentum Pictures has debuted a trailer for a thriller set in Tuscany titled Voice from the Stone, adapted from an Italian novel. Described as a "haunting and suspenseful romance set in 1950s Tuscany" at a 15th-century Italian castle, this Hitchcockian fairytale stars actress Emilia Clarke as Verena, a nurse who cares for a boy who has stopped speaking after the sudden death of his mother. While caring for him, she suddenly starts to hear the eerie voice of the boy's dead mother, making her wonder if she is ill as well. The cast includes Marton Csokas, Caterina Murino, Remo Girone, Lisa Gastoni, and Edward Dring. This looks like a very moody, atmospheric thriller with some sleek cinematography. Check this out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Eric D. Howell's Voice from the Stone, direct from YouTube: Set in the 1950s in Tuscany, Italy, Voice from the Stone...

Since being freed from the pages of Ian Fleming’s novel series, James Bond, history’s most notorious superspy, has conspired and charmed his way through Hollywood. And while Sean Connery is often held as the gold standard for all Bond actors, each has contributed his own strengths and abilities to the overall film canon.
Each acting incarnation of British spy was also tied to the era which he lived and filmed, portraying the social and political climate of the time. The two most recent actors to take on the role - Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig– have brought Bond to contemporary audiences, and reinvigorated his timeless appeal. Brosnan made his Bond debut with Goldeneye in 1995, in a post-Soviet world in which the renowned sexual escapades of previous James Bonds would have been considered not only outdated but stupidly dangerous at a time when AIDS was never far outside of the public consciousness.

The first teaser trailer for James Bond 24 has been released, but what did it tell us about the upcoming movie, Spectre?
After letting the sky fall when it crum-balled to the tune of a billion dollars at the global box office, Spectre may be the most anticipated James Bond movie since the last one. Daniel Craig's fourth feature as 007 won't arrive in UK cinemas until October, but the response to the teaser trailer released over the weekend has been very positive.
Four is hardly a magic number for Bond actors. Sean Connery's fourth outing was the less-than-stellar Thunderball, Roger Moore's was the all-too-interstellar Moonraker and Pierce Brosnan closed out his four-movie tenure with the infamously poor Die Another Day.
That makes Craig the fourth actor to rack up four turns as Bond, and if you're superstitious about this sort of thing, maybe that's why this looks to be the combo breaker.

Daniel Craig’s 007 is one lucky guy. In this November’s Spectre, the British spy will be trying out his terrible yet seductive one-liners on the likes of Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux, but today brings news that a third Bond girl has entered the picture: Mexican actress Stephanie Sigman.
The star, who previously toplined Mexico’s 2011 Oscars foreign language submission, Miss Bala, and Norwegian thriller Pioneer, was announced to be playing the role of Estrella via the James Bond 007 Facebook page.
Though Sigman, who’ll appear in Netflix’s upcoming Narcos and also had a role of FX’s departed The Bridge, is on the rise, she’s still less known than Bellucci or Seydoux, leading to speculation that her character is a dead woman walking. One Facebook commenter was quick to question whether she’ll be a “sacrificial lamb,” in the spirit of Shirley Easton’s Jill Masterston...

After surveying 1,000 parents exposed to multiple clips of on-screen sex and violence in movies, a study found that parents become increasingly desensitized to acts of sex and violence with repeated viewing which appears to lead to an increasing acceptance to both. The result is that these parents are less likely to shield their kids from movies that contain sex and violence. In addition, the authors note that people who rate movies for the MPAA (themselves parents) could also be subject to the same desensitization “and thus more likely to be lenient when it comes to evaluating the appropriateness of such content for children.” Those behind the study said this effect could help to explain the “ratings creep” that has allowed more violence into films aimed at our youth.
The MPAA has long acknowledged that its standards have shifted over time but has traditionally attributed this to the changing standards of parents.

Calling all attractive Nordic actresses between the ages of 25 and 40!
Filming for Bond 24 will begin in November 2014 and the film is set to be released one year later. Yes, Daniel Craig will be reprising his role as brooding 007 and, thankfully, Sam Mendes will once again be directing. Good luck topping Skyfall, Sam!
In casting news, the script is calling for “a beautiful Scandinavian character who is a good person with a troubled past” and will serve as a brief love interest for James Bond. Similar to Caterina Murino’s role in Casino Royale as well as Gemma Arterton’s role in Quantum of Solace, it is believed this Scandinavian female character will play out as a secondary Bond girl. Recent reports indicate that producers for Bond 24 will be casting a British actress as the female lead.

The Chase Begins: Valette’s Latest Shows Promise, Falls Short
French director Eric Valette, whose 2002 debut Malefique was an overbaked grindhouse misfire (even though it certainly didn’t lack in perverse flair), has made his most promising film yet with the poppy, pulpy and generically titled The Prey. While languishing in forgettable material since for some time now (including the English language version of One Missed Call), Valette still doesn’t transcend B movie trappings with this latest, but he manages to use his likeable lead in a slickly paced exercise stuffed with plenty of entertaining details to hold your interest.
We meet Franck Adrien (Albert Dupontel) in the middle of sexual interlude with his wife Anna (Caterina Murino), though we quickly realize that Franck is in prison and this is a conjugal visit. It turns out that Franck was responsible for a lofty bank heist, and he was never...
