This take on the first-century Iceni heroine looks like a home movie, and Olga Kurylenko’s lack of majesty in the lead role doesn’t help
Boudica, the Iceni queen who led an insurrection against the Roman colonisers in first-century Britain, is one of the great feminist icons from ancient history, but there are surprisingly few cinematic representations of her.
There was a British TV show from 1978 called Warrior Queen that had the great Siân Phillips daubed in woad, a just-ok film from 2003 also called Warrior Queen that starred Alex Kingston, and a smattering of others in various languages, mostly for TV. And, of course, there’s the utterly iconic segment in Horrible Histories where Queen B (Martha Howe-Douglas) sings a grungy ditty about how her bloody campaign.. But all that still leaves room for a great feature film about the toughest, most heroic gal to come out of Norfolk,...

Jk Rowling had a busy and exciting day on Tuesday, when she received the Companion of Honor from Prince William at Buckingham Palace. The author described herself as feeling "deeply honored and proud" to be awarded the honor for her services in literature and philanthropy. It comes after a testing few days for Rowling, who was forced to finally make a statement about the controversial casting of Johnny Depp in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald. The Order of Companions of Honor was established in 1971 to recognize outstanding achievement in the arts and is an award only held by a limited number of 65 people at once. Rowling joins the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Hawking, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Maggie Smith, and Delia Smith. The author said in a statement, "To be included in the distinguished and diversely talented company of the other Companions of Honor,...

Fun and frivolous, Robot Wars continued this week with another shock exit and some unforgiveable showboating…
This review contains spoilers.
I’ll tell you who’s doing well out of the Robot Wars revival, those print shops you drive past on the outskirts of towns that make custom hoodies. You’re no-one on this show if you’re not wearing a lightweight, breathable polo shirt embroidered with a word that probably sounded like a good idea when you made it up in your shed. Those guys must be raking it in.
Viewers at home, as it goes, aren’t doing badly out of it either. The second episode of Robot Wars was just as much frivolous fun as the first, even if it did feature what judge Professor Noel Sharkey called “the worst fight I’ve ever seen on the whole of Robot Wars”.

You couldn't get much more '90s than Tfi Friday. Even if you watched an episode of Friends while wearing a fisherman's hat with Shed Seven playing 'Chasing Rainbows' at the same time in your living room, it still wouldn't be as '90s as Chris Evans stood at a bar, shouting "Wiiiiiilll" in between bursts of 'The Riverboat Song'.
So when Chris Evans revealed over the Bank Holiday that Channel 4 had approached him to revive the show to mark its 20th anniversary next year (it isn't actually 20 until 2016, but let's not quibble over small details), there were understandably a few groans from people who thought the rowdy entertainment show should be left in the decade of Cool Britannia, Hooch and Kula Shaker.
But we disagree, for the five following reasons:
1. Tfi was live. Tfi was unpredictable.

Burnley’s return to the Premier League came completely out of the blue, and in fact before last season began, the club were one of the bookies’ favourites for relegation. The season before had hardly been distinguished and with just a handful of games to go, relegation was a real possibility, which is perhaps where the pessimism came from, but against the odds, and against the odd-makers, Burnley sealed their return back to the big-time ahead of big-money clubs like Qpr.
So just how did it happen, that a small and unfancied club, facing real problems once the parachute money ran out, confounded the critics and achieved a modern day football miracle? With money too tight to mention, a small squad that you’d describe as football wanderers came together, gelled, bonded, and despite warnings from all the pundits and fellow pros that...

Delia Smith's 40-year broadcasting career and contribution to TV cookery, which began with a five-minute pilot in which she made "Alpine eggs" in a hastily assembled BBC studio, was marked on Tuesday night by a Bafta tribute in central London, including an award handed over by Victoria Wood. Asked who would come to her dream dinner party, she nominated Pope Francis – "I would try and do something Argentinian" – corned beef hash, suggested one of her fans. Delia, who recently announced that she was quitting TV to focus on launching her own online cookery school, when asked for her views on modern celebrity chefs, replied: "My food had to be the star… Food isn't theatre … Our problem is we don't think highly enough of it, we have to turn it into something else." She said that while there are lots of food programmes, "what is missing is the basics, young...

Treating herself to some delicious eats, Pippa Middleton showed up at Comptoir restaurant in London, England on Tuesday (March 5).
Joined by her mother Carole, the sexy socialite spent an hour at the Lebanese restaurant before heading off to run some errands at a few nearby shops.
Earlier this month, Pippa was named as the new columnist for Waitrose magazine, replacing beloved cook Delia Smith. And it seems the publication has received a ton of flak for their decision.
One naysayer wrote, “A gratuitous insult to any customers with half a brain!” while another jabbed, “If her party book is anything to go by, you may well regret your decision.”
Furthermore, a disgruntled Twitter member tweeted, “Can’t believe Waitrose has replaced queen of cooking Delia with Pippa.”
Still, Pippa is excited about the new gig- “It will be an exciting opportunity to share my passion and enthusiasm for food and entertaining.

Delia Smith will be celebrated with a special BAFTA award next month at a tribute event to mark her outstanding contribution to television cookery and services to broadcasting.
'A BAFTA Tribute: Delia Smith' will mark Smith's 40th year in TV.
"Delia Smith is one of the most influential voices in television cookery and has played an important role in not only pioneering the genre in television but also shaping the perception of cooking in the nation's consciousness," said BAFTA TV committee chair Andrew Newman.
"Delia was the first TV cook to be recognised by her first name alone and her achievements have paved the way for today's cooking programmes and formats.
"It is unlikely that Jamie, Nigella, Gordon, The Hairy Bikers, and much-loved competitions such as The Great British Bake Off or MasterChef would have happened without her contribution."

Former As the World Turns hunk Jesse Soffer has joined the cast of NBC's modern-day Hatfields & McCoys drama, Deadline reports. Offer will appear as a prodigal son of the McCoy clan who returns to the fold just as the feud starts to heat up again. Now, if only I had more reason to include the phrase "Former As the World Turns hunk" more often.
The story of the ratings for The Americans has been a bumpy road. The espionage drama had a big debut, (what looked like) a large second-week drop-off and followed with a big gain from DVR viewers. Thankfully, the nervous part is over as FX has ordered a second season, meaning we'll get to keep seeing Matthew Rhys in a variety of disguises. Additionally, Nielsen has finished counting the viewers for the premiere and it now ranks as FX's most-watched series debut.

Delia Smith has announced her retirement from TV cookery shows.
The 71-year-old has decided to step back from television work following the end of her contract to promote supermarket chain Waitrose, the Radio Times reports.

"As soon as my Waitrose contract ended, the BBC called me up and said, 'What can we do?' And I said, 'No, thank you' - I am afraid to say this is the end when it comes to Delia on the telly," said Smith.

Washington, Jan 14: 40 percent of the celebrity recipe books are never used by home cooks, as many are intimidated by the unfamiliar ingredients, recipes and language used by the likes of Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay, a study has revealed.
By contrast, mums and dads creating a family meal, or even a dinner party, are much happier with the style, ease and simplicity offered by the likes of Delia Smith and, particularly, Jamie Oliver, the Daily Mail reported.
Two in three (67 percent) said that they find the recipes in many glossy cookbooks intimidating, according to the survey commissioned by Italian food company.

Alan Cumming, who plays Macbeth (and all the other parts) in New York's Lincoln Center Festival's production of Macbeth, on what Shakespeare means to him
Macbeth was the first play I ever read. In fact, I remember my brother Tom, who is six years older than me, coming home from school and telling me about it. He was the one that really got me going.
It took me a while to come to terms with the fact that all the other plays weren't Scottish. Cawdor, Birnam, Duncan, Glasgow; I knew all these places.
I think of Shakespeare as a collective, because you'd have to be some sort of crazy motherfucker to have the brains, heart and balls to write all those things. To be so raw and real and primal and then at the same time, musical and profound. It's too genius for one person.

Click here to friend Best British TV on Facebook or here to follow us on Twitter.
Christmas comes but once a year and nobody wants to be the British TV fan that Santa Clause forgot. Therefore, we’ve put together a list of stocking stuffers that you can add to your Christmas wish list.
1. The Ride in Dalek. This one is ideally suited for small kids and people who have no issue with spending $200 on inflatables. It is battery operated with a maximum speed of 3 Km (2 miles) per hour. So you couldn’t make a living as a professional driver racing in one of these. Also, so far it is only available in the UK so you may have to pay a premium to a hawk on E-Bay if you want one shipped to the States but isn’t it worth it?
2. Downton Abbey Season Two DVD or Blu-Ray.

Like an old friend you haven’t seen for a while, the Premiership is back. Last week was a novelty, stirring the old emotions, nostalgia in the air, recounting those glorious moments from seasons passed. Now, already it’s taken for granted, consumed once again by the utter banality that is the routine of existence. Still, we love it all the same right?
On that cheerful note, here is the weekend round up.
The first game to kick off the day was every pie seller’s dream, the Tyne-Wear derby. On that cheerful note, here is the weekend round up.
The first game to kick off the day was every pie seller’s dream, the Tyne-Wear derby. It was the 145th time these two had met in a competitive fixture, not particularly anything in the way of a landmark number but still, I’m never one to pass up on the sharing of pointless trivia. Agave nectar, Mexican chilli sauce and wheat-free noodles: it's a gourmand's delight in Gwyneth's kitchen
This week, Gwyneth Paltrow appeared at the London Roundhouse to run through the store cupboard essentials from her new cookbook. We've come a long way since Delia Smith who, memorably, always has capers in her larder. Paltrow's least esoteric ingredient is olive oil. The rest, you might be able to find, but will you know what to do with it?
Light agave nectar: in terms of viscosity, a cross between sap and honey, this is a sweetener produced at a low temperature and, like so many foods deriving from the Mexican plant world (tacos and, um, cheese), it has a low GI; it's an excellent solution, then, if you are a raw foodist who is prone to weight gain.

Jamie Oliver has been named as the TV chef most British people trust. The celebrity cook - famed for his drive to encourage people to eat healthier - beat his contemporaries including Delia Smith, The Hairy Bikers, James Martin and Nigella Lawson to take the top spot in the Reader's Digest Most Trusted Brands 2011 survey of 2,357 people. However, while Jamie has the trust of the British population, he does not appear to be faring so well in America, where 'Jamie's Food Revolution' has been temporarily replaced with recaps of celebrity reality show 'Dancing With the Stars' after suffering...

FHM has announced Cheryl Cole as the winner of FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2010 poll. The Girls Aloud and X Factor judge eased into the top spot for a second consecutive year leaving actress Megan Fox in second place.
Winning the coveted Sexiest Woman in the World crown is yet another reason for Cheryl to celebrate. Since separating from her footballer husband Ashley in February she’s scored a new legion of male fans, racked up a number one single and album and is hotly tipped to be a judge on the Us version of the X Factor.
Cheryl’s victory marks the first time a British star has won the prestigious accolade for two consecutive years. The only other Brits to take the title during the poll’s 16 year history are Keira Knightley (2006) and Kelly Brook (2005).

Delia Smith and Heston Blumenthal have signed up to front a new TV ad campaign for Waitrose. The two popular and well-known chefs penned a three-year deal with the supermarket chain, reports The Daily Telegraph. Smith and Blumenthal, who will also appear on billboards and magazine adverts, are the first celebrities to ever be used by the company. Delia Smith has admitted that she was "told off" for wearing short skirts when she worked as a waitress. The star served customers at The Singing Chef restaurant in Paddington, London in the 1960s before getting her big break in the food industry. Smith, now 68, will be seen revisiting the restaurant next week in a new BBC Two show Delia Through The Decades, which celebrates her successful career as a chef. Alan Cummings is amazed Britain's Queen Elizabeth is "a friend of the gays". The 44-year-old actor was shocked to receive an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his work as a gay rights activist, as well as for his services to the arts, but was thrilled with the accolade. He said: "I didn't know the queen was such a friend of the gays." Alan received the award in the queen's birthday honours list in June. Others famous faces to be honoured included chef Delia Smith who received a Commander of the British Empire (Cbe), golfer Nick Faldo who was knighted and 'Dracula' actor Christopher Lee who also got a knighthood. Gawd strewth! Another Smith in the Tardis! Sarah Jane Smith, Mickey Smith, John Smith and now some relatively unknown youngster called Matt Smith! Whatever next? Delia Smith as the new companion??? I, for one, am happy with the casting of the "relatively unknown 26 year old" (you'll be hearing that phrase A Lot over the coming days!) - he looks the part and seems genuinely charming with some extremely expressive hands, a quirkiness that can only add to the role. And he has weird...

The Restaurant's Raymond Blanc has said he has no desire to wade into celebrity chef feuds. The French restaurateur claimed that he is uncomfortable with the confrontational approach taken by fellow TV chef Gordon Ramsay, who has previously attacked Delia Smith for cooking with pre-packaged food. Speaking to Digital Spy about rowing TV chefs, Blanc said: "I don't want to go there, I truly don't want to go there. Sure, I detest part of the approach that some chefs have taken, but I will never be personal. Never, never, never. What's the point? What's the point? What for? You gain nothing." Blanc also revealed that he would enter his own reality TV show if he was starting out in the restaurant business today, but warned (more)...

Chef Marco Pierre White has called for Delia Smith to be made a Dame. The Hell's Kitchen star said criticism of Smith's recent How To Cheat At Cooking series was out of order. "Delia did more for cooking in this country than anybody else," he told The Sun. "She's had a kicking but she’s not telling you to do it. She's telling you how to do it if you want to. It might inspire people to cook. She should be Dame Delia Smith, in my opinion." White blasted Joanna Lumley's suggestion that all chickens should be free range, describing it as unsustainable. If you had to compose a list of celebrities you'd least like to get on the wrong side of, then Gordon Ramsay and Kiefer Sutherland could well feature prominently. A man who won't hesitate to tear into his own chefs, take shots at Delia Smith and ask Geri Halliwell how many meatballs she can stuff into her mouth is surely not to be messed with. Equally intimidating is Kiefer Sutherland. The 24 star has proved physically indestructible as CIA agent Jack Bauer and he's not exactly shy and retiring in real life either, having recently made it into the top five of a recent Hollywood hellraisers poll. Gordon Ramsay to... Jade Goody - Despite his tough, uncompromising personality, Gordon has shown his caring side in the past. A serial marathon runner, the chef has completed the London Marathon four times. Not so impressive an athlete is Jade Goody. (more)...
