The urban legend of a woman who died trying to find the fictional “Fargo” suitcase full of cash became an indie drama breakout hit for filmmakers the Zellner Brothers.
The Zellners debuted “Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter” at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, capturing the tale of a Tokyo-based office worker, played by Oscar-nominated “Babel” star Rinko Kikuchi, who trekked to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in search of the money that Steve Buscemi’s character buries in the snow at the end of the Coens’ “Fargo.” The blurring of fact and fiction, reality and film, turned “Kumiko” into a cult classic in the making. And the film has since been notoriously hard to find, as it’s not currently available on streaming platforms.
Now, in honor of the film’s 10-year anniversary, Bleecker Street is re-releasing the feature in theaters and on demand. “Kumiko” is directed by David Zellner from a script he co-wrote with his brother Nathan Zellner.

David and Nathan Zellner first began penning the script for "Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter" in 2001, inspired by the urban legend of a Japanese woman named Takako Kunishi. In a pre-internet crazed age, the first details to emerge regarding her case took on a near chimerical quality, as the local media reported that the Tokyo-based office worker had died in Minneapolis in search of the suitcase of cash Steve Buscemi's character buries beneath the snow at the end of "Fargo." Read More: Review: Rinko Kikuchi Is Stunning As Alienated 'Fargo' Superfan In the Zellner Bros.' 'Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter' Transfixed by Kunishi's improbable quest, the Zellners spent the next 11 years working to bring her tale to production, eventually attaching the Oscar-nominated Rinko Kikuchi to the project as her eponymous proxy. With the excellent "Kumiko" finally reaching screens some 14 years later, Indiewire spoke with the Zellners and producer Chris Ohlson about how they.

Richard Linklater won for Best Director and Patricia Arquette won the Best Supporting actress for team Boyhood, while Iñárritu’s Birdman claimed Best Picture, Best Actor (Michael Keaton) and Cinematographer (Emmanuel Lubezki) at the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards last night. The split might foreshadow how the Oscars play out tonite, as the Middleweight Saturday ceremony and Heavyweight Sunday gig are more or less interchangeable. The two films that might gain a little further traction from the tent spotlight include Nightcrawler (which picked up Best First Feature and Best Screenplay) and Whiplash, Damien Chazelle’s deservedly won for Best Supporting Actor and Editing categories. Also worth pointing out is a Land Ho! win in the category we love the most: the John Cassavetes Award. Here are the winners and noms.

Just one night before the Oscars take over town, stars flocked to the 2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards on the Santa Monica Beach on Saturday (February 21).
Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell joined forces for co-hosting duties and put on a fabulous show as actors and actresses including Scarlett Johansson, Ethan Hawke, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and Emma Stone turned up to lend their star power to the IFC airing ceremony.
As for this year's cream of the crop, Michael Keaton (Birdman), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) took home top honors in the lead and supporting acting categories.
Meanwhile, in what very well may be an indicator for what's to come tomorrow at the Academy Awards, "Birdman" was recognized as Best Feature while Richard Linklater nabbed Best Director accolades for "Boyhood".

As usual, the 2015 Spirit Award winners for Best Feature (Birdman), Best Director (Richard Linklater, Boyhood), Best Documentary (Citizenfour), Best International Film (Ida), Best Female Lead (Julianne Moore, Still Alice), and Best Male Lead (Michael Keaton, Birdman) all seem like highly probable precursors for the Oscars. So, if they are just going to predict the Oscars, what is the point of the Spirit Awards? Where the Spirit Awards have historically garnered attention and respect is in categories such as Best First Feature (Nightcrawler), Best First Screenplay (Dear White People), John Cassavetes Award (Land Ho!), Robert Altman Award (Inherent Vice), Piaget Producer's Award (Chad Burris, Elisabeth Holm, Chris Ohlson), Kiehl’s Someone to Watch Award (H.), and Lenscrafters' Truer Than Fiction Award (The Kill Team). For the last two years I have all but dismissed the Spirit Awards in fear that they sold out and essentially became an "Oscar Jr."; but after...

The 2015 Spirit Awards were handed out today and it was Birdman taking Best Feature and Best Actor (Michael Keaton) while Boyhood went home a double winner taking Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). However, while that's the result for the two big guns that will be going head-to-head at tomorrow night's Oscars, Nightcrawler was also a double winner taking Best Screenplay and Best First Feature, both awarded to writer/director Dan Gilroy. Otherwise, no big surprises with Julianne Moore (Still Alice) taking Best Actress and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) taking Supporting Actor, Citizenfour took Best Documentary and Birdman scored a third win for Emmanuel Lubezki for Best Cinematography. Justin Simien (Dear White People) took home Best First Screenplay and, whoa!, Look!, Whiplash was also a double winner, with Tom Cross winning for Best Editing (well deserved!) and anticipated Oscar winner in the same category, Ida won Best Foreign Language Film.

Both Kings and Jacks are wild this summer as Screen Daily reports that filming on King Jack is set to begin this summer. Directed by two time SXSW short filmmaker Felix Thompson and produced along with Buffalo Picture House’s Gabrielle Nadig and Dominic Buchanan of Gimme the Loot fame (a rare SXSW to Un Certain Regard selection), the project is a note-worthy trade item in our books because Nadig was among the select few (same time last year actually) to be named as a Sundance Institute Creative Producing Lab fellow (other producers with project include still in development items from Brett Potter (producer on Andrew Renzi’s The Fort) and Chris Ohlson (producer for Zellner Bros.’ Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter). Whitewater’s Rick Rosenthal, Bert Kern and Nick Morton are exec producing, and so are Stink’s Daniel Bergmann and Martin Forbes. Corey Deckler co-produces.

New distrib Amplify has steadily built up their own Sundance Film Fest film arsenal (Little Accidents, The Better Angels, God Help the Girl), and now according to THR, they’ve just added a very special film from the Zellner Brothers. Depending on what they’ve planned for their previous acquisitions, we think Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter will likely play in the deep of winter to match the film’s wintery backdrop.
Gist: In a hectic city of 35 million, Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi) feels devastatingly alone. Trapped in isolating psychological torment, Kumiko —a meek twenty-something struggling to make it on her own in Tokyo—lives in constant resentment of her dead-end job and demeaning boss, her more successful and attractive peers, and her relentlessly nagging mother. But her spirits lift when, in a fictional American film, she observes a man bury a satchel of money in the wintry Midwestern wilderness. Though only...

Gravitas Ventures has acquired former Indiewire Project of the Day "Thank You A Lot," writer-director Matt Muir's film set in the Austin music scene (sorry, Terrence Malick, some people just work more quickly). The film, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, will see a Video On Demand release in June 2014. "Thank You A Lot" concerts a small-time music manager (Blake DeLong) on the verge of losing his job. His last ditch-effort: sign a reclusive country music singer – his father (real life country music singer James Hand playing a fictional version of himself). As an added bonus to the VOD release, the filmmakers plan a summer tour of screenings and music concerts featuring musicians from the film. The film was produced by Chris Ohlson, who's also behind the Sundance hit "Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter."...

Toh! has scored an exclusive clip to SXSW premiere "Thank You A Lot," centering on a struggling Austin music manager who is facing the possibility of losing his job unless he signs with his reclusive country music father (played by real-life underground country star James Hand). Check it out, below. The film has its world premiere in the narrative spotlight section at South By on March 7, the opening day of the fest. It's written and directed by Austin filmmaker Matt Muir, and produced by Chris Ohlson ("Kumiko the Treasure Hunter"). Here's the official synopsis:Jack Hand is a two-bit hustler and bottom-rung music manager with a questionable reputation. His dwindling social circle is made up of his only remaining clients; a hip-hop artist and an indie rock band. Jack's next best asset is his talented but estranged musician father, James Hand, a highly respected and reclusive songwriter whose legacy goes a...

In August 2012, I visited the set of the movie Thank You A Lot, which features Texas singer/songwriter James "Slim" Hand as a fictionalized version of himself along with actor Blake DeLong as a small-time music agent who struggles within the Austin music scene. Texas musicians who appear in the film include hip-hop artist Da'Shade Moonbeam, members of the Austin band Hundred Visions and jazz vocalist Keri Johnsrud.
Thank You A Lot will debut at this year's SXSW Film Festival in the Narrative Spotlight category, with the premiere screening at the Topfer Theatre at Zach on Friday, March 7 at 7 pm. Additional screenings take place on Sunday, March 9 at the Marchesa and Saturday, March 15 at the Vimeo Theater in the Austin Convention Center.
I recently spoke with writer/director Matt Muir and producer Chris Ohlson to continue our discussion about the journey of Thank You A Lot from the set to the screen.

Ready, Set, Fund is a column about crowdfunding and fundraising endeavors related to Austin and Texas independent film projects.
Several local film projects that ran successful crowdfunding campaigns are making their regional premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival including the experimental documentary Yakona from San Marcos-based filmmakers Anlo Sepulveda and Paul Collins, Thank You A Lot from Matt Muir and Chris Ohlson, Jeffrey Radice's No No: A Dockumentary, and Todd Rohal's Rat Pack Rat (pictured above). Yakona also received two Austin Film Society Grants (formerly known as the Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund), as did local filmmaker Kat Candler for her feature-length version of Hellion, which also makes its Texas debut at SXSW.
The SXSW Film Conference will feature several sessions that should be of interest to filmmakers who want to learn more about achieving funding for their projects.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Paul Eenhoorn: Frank Sinatra and his absolute command of his craft. My Vauxhall Velox from my teenage years now a classic motor vehicle. My total admiration for Cameron Diaz. 2013 Still love Castle on TV. The paintings of Ricco Distefano, Frances Ha, a great Indie. Iceland. Australia. Headline. Seahawks win Super Bowl. More 2014 I guess.
Lavallee: Exactly one year to the date you “broke” out in the same section with This Is Martin Bonner. Where in the timeline does Land Ho! fit in the scheme of things? Aaron worked with Chad before but did either filmmakers come across this perf and booked you then?

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Chris Ohlson: The Polaroid photography of Bastian Kalous… I’m haunted by it. Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War… takes my breath away for over 600+ pages. Swimming at Night… great for the head & heart.
Lavallee: Sight unseen, the Coen brothers’ Fargo is part of the narrative structure could you discuss how the Zellners creatively used that film within their own without swallowing a huge chunk of the budget. Ohlson: Well, the movie-within-the-movie is one very small part of a much larger narrative structure. It’s a jumping off point, to a certain degree, but the movie-used-within-the-movie is really just a small plot mechanism. This is so much more about Kumiko, as a young woman on a quest… we loved the idea of a contemporary quest across the globe for a mythical fortune and that’s how our greater narrative structure works.

Kelly Williams: Ola Podrida’s album “Ghosts Go Blind”. The Documentary – Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay. Walt Roberts – Hellion & Parkland actor / World-Class Fiddle Player.
Lavallee: I believe that this is your third time producing a Kat Candler film (Hellion follows Hellion the short, and Black Metal). How did that professional relationship begin and could you discuss the creative dynamic between the two of you.
Williams: Even though we both live in Austin, we actually met through a mutual friend, Zack Phillips, at Sundance in 2001. We became friends over the years. In 2009, I programmed her short film, Love Bug, at the Austin Film Festival where I was a film programmer, but we didn’t actually work together until we made the Hellion short in the summer of 2011. Making that short, it became pretty obvious that we wanted to work together more.

Still riding high on the waves of his success following last year’s Nebraska, with early predictions set for at least a nod for Bruce Dern in tomorrow’s Oscar nominations, Alexander Payne has found his next project in Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter.
Directed by David Zellner, the drama is led by the Oscar-nominated Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, Pacific Rim), and will be making its debut at Sundance next week.
Deadline reports that Payne and his Oscar-winning frequent collaborator Jim Taylor (Sideways, About Schmidt) have boarded the film as executive producers ahead of its Sundance bow.

This Thursday, the Sundance Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary and since we’ve covered about 1/3rd of the event and have fond memories of each edition, we figured why not commemorate some of the personalities that will make up this year’s crop. Welcome to our Sundance “Trading Cards” series.
Profiling the misfits, the filmmakers and the supporting players both in front of and behind the camera, we asked each person (curiously vast bunch from grade school aged vets to pension aged newbies) what their “three favorite 2013 discoveries”. These could either be old classics, obscure items from the past, present or 2013 fresh as in favorite album, song, recording artist, painter, sculptor, author, book, narrative or docu film, video game, television series, science, technology, apps, city, country or news headline. And like any given sport cards features, we included their vitals and favorite fest(s).
Enjoy the series and collect the entire set!

Here's an update on the latest Austin-related movie news:
The latest production from Troublemaker Studios, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, was shooting in downtown Austin this weekend, which apparently only increased the traffic frustration caused by Acl Fest. Still, it's always nice to hear about films shooting downtown, especially when you are not downtown.Speaking of Troublemaker, Robert Rodriguez has said that his next film project will be Sin City 2 ... if the script is ready. And the stars align. And he isn't offered something else way cooler in the meantime. Perhaps we'll find out more details at Austin Film Festival, where he'll be receiving the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award. Speaking of which, I'm wondering if one of those TBAs at Aff won't be a Rodriguez film, since award winners usually do one retrospective. Which movie do you think they'd show? At this time of year,...
