The 2023 BET Awards were handed out Sunday night, with Latto, Beyoncé, Coco Jones, Teyana “Spike Tey” Taylor and Burna Boy among the winners announced during the live telecast.
The awards recognize the best performances of the year across music, TV, film and sports. Agatha Christie, the “Queen of Crime”, whose novels are still adapted for the screen with machine-like regularity, knew that the question in the title of her 1934 mystery Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? was too good to pass up. “You don’t know yet who Evans is going to be... Evans will come in due course,” she once wrote. “The title is fixed.” Well, after a century of intriguing readers, that central proposition is now being brought to television viewers in the form of a three-part Britbox series, starring, written and directed by Hugh Laurie.
Narnia’s Will Poulter steps into the Christieverse as Bobby Jones, a happy-go-lucky vicar’s son who finds a dying man during a round of golf. “Why didn’t they ask Evans?” the man splutters with his final breath and Bobby is thrust on the trail of murderers, kidnappers and dope fiends. He’s ably...

What is it about the game of golf that makes good cinema? We can barely keep our eyes open during the PGA Tour. Its tranquil vibes are more relaxing than a glass of warm milk. And we can't name but a handful of players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, er... Is there a famous "Dave" in there? Still, we could pop in and enjoy at least a dozen films about the sport at a moment's notice on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's something majestic about the luscious greens, the stillness of the crowd, the whispered play-by-play, and the distant thwack of a ball that translates to the big screen.
Or maybe it's the class struggle, as golf is seen as a gentleman's sport designed for the wealthy. A round of golf at Pebble Beach will set you back nearly 600! Or perhaps we're intoxicated by the psychology of the game,...

The 2022 BET Awards are being handed out Sunday night.
The show kicked off with host Taraji P. Henson, presenter Janelle Monae and best female R&b/pop artist winner Jazmine Sullivan all addressing the recent Supreme Court decision to reverse the Roe v. Wade ruling within the first 17 minutes of the show.
“Guns have more rights than a woman,” Henson said in her monologue. “It’s a sad day in America. A weapon that can take lives has more power than woman who can give life, if she chooses to.”
Monae gave the middle finger and said, “Fuck you, Supreme Court” (the swear word was bleeped), while Sullivan called on males to support females in fighting for their rights.
Heading into the show, Doja Cat leads the nominations with a total of six mentions, including best female R&b/pop artist and best female hip-hop artist.

Agatha Christie gave Hercule Poirot’s little grey cells a break in 1934 to write the the lighthearted murder whodunit “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?” Instead of having a brilliant Belgian detective hot on the trail of a killer, “Evans” is populated by two young attractive amateur sleuths: Bobby Jones, the son of a local vicar, who discovers a dying man off the cliffs of his local golf course who asks the title question just before he passes, and Frankie, his carefree, beautiful childhood friend.
Hugh Laurie fell in love with the book when he read it as a “lad.” And his “almost childish enthusiasm for the story” never wavered. So much so, he wrote and directed the acclaimed three-part limited series currently streaming on BritBox. Will Poulter plays Bobby; Lucy Boynton is Frankie. Longtime friend Emma Thompson, who dated Laurie in college, and Jim Broadbent play Frankie’s eccentric parents.

“Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?” is a whip-smart British-set whodunnit, written and directed by Hugh Laurie, based on the iconic 1934 novel by Agatha Christie. If that is not catnip for Emmy voters, then I don’t know what is.
The three-part mystery premiered on upstart streaming service Britbox on April 14. It stars BAFTA Rising Star award winner Will Poulter as the local Vicar’s son, lovable Bobby Jones and Lucy Boynton as his friend, razor-sharp socialite Lady Frances “Frankie” Derwent. Unbeknownst to them while looking for a lost golf ball on a perfectly pleasant Wales gold course, the duo come upon the crumpled body of a dying man who utters the enigmatic query of the show’s title with his last dying breath. The show’s official synopsis then goes on to read, “armed with a photograph of a young woman found in the dead man’s pocket, amateur sleuths...

Agatha Christie’s 1934 mystery novel Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? takes its title from the last words of a dying man who’s plummeted from a cliff in Wales. Finding out what his strange question means sends vicar’s son Bobby Jones (Will Poulter) and his socialite friend Frankie Derwent (Lucy Boynton) on a dangerous journey in BritBox’s three-part limited series adapted and directed by House’s Hugh Laurie, who also plays Dr. James Nicholson, the head of a sanitorium. Laurie had been talking to the folks in charge of Agatha Christie’s work about playing a role in an adaptation of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd when he brought up the idea of doing Evans. “I loved the juxtaposition of the mystery side of it and the comic verve of it — of these two young characters setting out on an adventure together,” Laurie tells TV Insider. “What...

Abe and company always seem to find a way.
A sitting U.S. Congressman didn't escape justice despite all the interference run by his supporters on The Code Season 1 Episode 4.
It was encouraging to see that killing an innocent civilian 15 years earlier didn't just get swept under the rug, despite all the blowback that taking on such a case created.
Abe isn't a creature of nuance. As far as he was concerned, a murder is a murder, regardless of who died and who killed.
Col. Turnbull has to be more of a big-picture person. She could see all the obstacles they would face when trying to convict Bobby Jones.
Poor Harper got thrown off the case as soon as she identified Jones as a Congressman since, as Glenn tactfully explained, just being from San Francisco is "a stance."

Golf movies take on a wide variety of genres.
From comedies like Caddyshack to biographical dramas like Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, the below films all tell different stories while capturing the spirit of the sport.
In The Greatest Game Ever Played and Tin Cup, golf helps the main characters overcome serious societal differences. Even the oldest movie in the bunch, 1953's The Caddy, shows how golf can help bring people together.

Considering everything that's been happening on the planet in the last several months, you'd have thought we're already in November or December – of 2117. But no. It's only June. 2017. And in some parts of the world, that's the month of brides, fathers, graduates, gays, and climate change denial. Beginning this evening, Thursday, June 1, Turner Classic Movies will be focusing on one of these June groups: Lgbt people, specifically those in the American film industry. Following the presentation of about 10 movies featuring Frank Morgan, who would have turned 127 years old today, TCM will set its cinematic sights on the likes of William Haines, James Whale, George Cukor, Mitchell Leisen, Dorothy Arzner, Patsy Kelly, and Ramon Novarro. In addition to, whether or not intentionally, Claudette Colbert, Colin Clive, Katharine Hepburn, Douglass Montgomery (a.k.a. Kent Douglass), Marjorie Main, and Billie Burke, among others. But this is ridiculous! Why should TCM present a...

Chicago – I rage quit “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14’” multiple times. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, and I think the franchise has put out quality games in the past, but when it came to putting in this year’s edition, it wasn’t uncommon for me to miss my hit window, short my putt, stand up, turn my Xbox 360 off, and storm outside in search of an adorable kitten to boss around. I mean, golfing has always been a frustrating experience - but in real life if you get a cart, a nice day, five or six (or nine) brews in the back of that cart, and some good friends, you’ll very likely have yourself a quality afternoon where you don’t care about what your stroke count was and how many holes you 9-putted.
Video Game Rating: 3.0/5.0

Rory McIlroy gave golf fans flashbacks to the days of Tiger Woods’ dominance with his remarkable victory at last year’s U.S. Open. McIlroy became the youngest U.S. Open winner since Bobby Jones in 1923, and he shot all four rounds in the 60s and finished 16 under par for the tournament. World No. 1 McIlroy will try to repeat at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, where he’ll be challenged by Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Hunter Mahan, Steve Stricker, Woods (now a favorite thanks to his recent win at The Memorial) and Masters champion Bubba Watson. A marketing survey has revealed that Warner Brothers is considering starting their own online movie streaming service that would compete directly with companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu Plus.
Warner Brothers is considering launching an online streaming service to compete with providers like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus. Called Warner Archive Streaming, the service would primarily offer classic movies, cartoons, and TV shows from its extensive catalog, rather than new releases. If successful, the service could catapult Warner Brothers as a major player in the booming online video streaming business.
Details of the plan emerged after Warner recently asked their consumers to participate in an online survey about the service. According to a source with intimate knowledge of the survey, Warner measured interest in a streaming service that would offer many of its older titles not readily available on DVD or Blu-ray. Warner currently has a program called Warner Archive,...

Prebble is the creator of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl. Her latest play, Enron, transferred to the West End and Broadway in 2010.
When we were auditioning actors for Enron, they'd talk to the director, not to me, and it occurred to me they thought I was a secretary taking notes. Then one said, "Who's the writer?" and the director said, "She is." This guy just looked at me and went, "You wrote this? Ok..." and nodded. One hears tales of the mythic Southern gentleman, but to those who live outside that region, this mysterious figure seems no more than a classic American legend. However, one may find a living, breathing specimen in the form of Lucas Black. With a Southern drawl, impeccable manners, and a knack for getting each role just right, Black is both charming and talented. His most recent film, "Get Low" is just the kind Black likes: one with a great lesson to impart. The story revolves around Felix, a cantankerous and lively old man played by Robert Duvall with adept and transfixing skill, who decides to throw a funeral for himself in his 1930s Southern town. Black plays Buddy, the young family man and assistant to the town's funeral home director, Frank Quinn, played to understated comedic perfection by Bill Murray. Felix's feminine counterpart in the folk tale–like story, Mattie Darrow,...

The 2009 pro golf season (mercifully) officially ended this past weekend, with the Tour Championship in Georgia. On the course where Bobby Jones learned to play golf, East Lake, Tiger Woods won the controversial FedEx Cup, and Phil Mickelson won the tournament. Tiger took home $10 million and salvaged a season in which he didn't win a major championship. Mickelson ended an annus horribilis, in which both his wife and mother battled breast cancer, on a very upbeat and inspirational note. He made a few million less than Woods. The PGA Tour was practically orgasmic over the outcome. Tiger, Phil, together, hoisting trophies, together! The photogenic, telegenic finish concluded the third year of the FedEx Cup, a yearlong points competition that concludes with a playoff series after the PGA Championships. It's one of the stupidest ideas ever inflicted on professional sports...

If today's youth are truly a colorblind demographic, how does that influence the way brands should market to them?
"I'm trying hard to explore, I'm not sure What all the racial war is for It's making me more sore I walk through a color blind corridor Seeking, for peace in the people I'm meeting Black, White and Puerto Rican men are greeting each other Just like brothers, there's plenty and many of others You can discover, kids fathers and mothers In a melting pot, no one felt they got prejudiced And I could never assist someone diss this" The above lyrics are the opening lyrics from a rap song entitled Erase Racism. The remaining lyrics, of this song by Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, follow the same vein of not focusing on people's racial and ethnic differences.
When this song was released in 1990, I was a big fan, and an aspiring Mc.
