Daniel Radcliffe won’t be competing against his Merrily We Roll Along Broadway co-star Jonathan Groff for a Tony Award next June, and the reason has nothing to do with performance quality: The awards administration committee ruled today that Radcliffe will be eligible in the featured performer category, apparently leaving the lead category to Groff.
Lindsay Mendez, who plays Mary Flynn, the musical’s most prominent female character, will, like Radcliffe, who plays Charley Kringas, be eligible in the featured slot (the Tony’s equivalent to Oscar’s “supporting” categories).
While Groff’s character of Franklin Shepard has traditionally been considered the main character of the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical, this year’s hit Maria Friedman-directed revival included the three stars’ names above the title, leaving some wiggle room with regard to the category decisions.
Indeed, audience members might be hard-pressed to decide which actor goes where: While...

It’s nothing new for a musical to be based on a movie. But in the new comedy “The Shark Is Broken,” which officially opened on Broadway Thursday night, viewers are going back to 1975’s “Jaws” — but not in the way movie fans remember.
“The Shark is Broken” is co-written by and starring Ian Shaw, the son of the late Robert Shaw, who of course played ship captain Quint in the original blockbuster. In the play, Shaw portrays his own father alongside Broadway vet Alex Brightman as Richard Dreyfuss and Colin Donnell as Roy Scheider in a behind-the-scenes comedy based on the infamously difficult movie shoot.
As cinephiles are aware, “Jaws” had a troubled production: shooting on the water proved more difficult than Steven Spielberg imagined, and the mechanical shark (nicknamed “Bruce”) frequently broke down. The 90-minute play imagines several days of the shoot when Dreyfuss, Shaw, and Scheider were stuck on a boat,...

The Robots in Disguise return to theaters with a new mission the weekend of June 9, and analysts are already crunching numbers for the film’s summertime debut. According to Hollywood trend watchers and number hounds, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts could make $68M to $70M in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada.
That number is impressive after 2018’s Bumblebee opened to $21.6M in the domestic market, while Transformers: The Last Knight did $44.6M over a $68.4M Wednesday through Sunday window. If Transformers: Rise of the Beasts performs as expected, the action-packed installment inspired by a nostalgic property will be another win for the recovering box office. For those keeping track, Fast X is racing toward a $60M debut, with Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid swimming toward $110M. Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Acorss the Spider-Verse could web up $80M, setting the summer box office on fire.

Every ’80s kid’s favorite toy robots are back. The teaser trailer for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” was released Thursday, with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee set to return to theaters.
The film, the first in the franchise since the “Bumblebee” spinoff in 2018, is a sequel to the film and largely unconnected to the five films in the series helmed by Michael Bay. The movie sees the heroic Autobot Transformer faction cross paths with three different groups of animal-themed robots: the Maximals, the Predacons, and the Terrorcons.
Best known for their appearances in the 1996 “Beast Wars” computer-animated series, the film sees the three groups wage war against one another, dragging the Autobots into the conflict in the process. Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback star as the main human characters in the film, Noah and Elena, two Brooklyn-based archaeologists from 1994 who stumble upon the conflict and end up on a globe-trotting journey to save the world.

Peru as a filming location can be viewed before and after the making of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” where a good chunk of the seventh iteration in the Paramount Pictures franchise is set in the picturesque country.
Directed by Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”), the upcoming “Transformers” is said to have injected an estimated 10 million-plus into Peru’s economy. More importantly, it prompted the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a new artistic production visa that provides special migratory status to visiting crew and talent, which in turn, facilitates the import of equipment and props. More than 30 vehicles, including trucks, high speed cars, motorbikes and Vw classics, were shipped to Peru for the sci-fi movie. In the past, people had to use a journalist visa to work on audiovisual projects in the country, which was cumbersome, says producer Bruno Canale of Apu Prods., which provided production services to the reportedly 200 million pic.

Robert Katz, who produced several prestigious movies and TV projects, including 1999’s “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” and 1993’s “Gettysburg,” has died at 81, his widow, Patricia Brown Katz, confirmed to TheWrap.
Katz, who had been battling lung cancer for several years, died Wednesday morning at the intensive care unit of the Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, California.
While a statement prepared by Katz’s friends listed his birthdate as February 7, 1943, Patricia told TheWrap that he was actually born in 1941 and that his middle initial was “F.” for “Francis, not “A.,” which was reported elsewhere.

Exclusive: He starred in the first Warner Bros. Space Jam movie back in 1996, however, Pepe Le Pew will not be showing up at all in the upcoming theatrical sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy on July 16.
With the Looney Tunes French skunk besieged by controversy in the wake of New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow slamming that the cartoon character “added to rape culture,” Deadline has learned that a hybrid live-action animation scene between Jane the Virgin actress Greice Santo and Pepe Le Pew, shot back in June 2019 for Space Jam 2 was left on the cutting room floor.
The live-action scene was filmed by the pic’s first director, Terence Nance. As we first reported in July 2019, Nance left the production with Malcolm D. Lee taking over. Under the direction of Lee, Pepe Le Pew was eliminated from the sequel a while ago and never animated for the live-action footage which was shot.

Malcolm D. Lee will direct the follow-up film, with Ryan Coogler, James under his SpringHill Entertainment Duncan Henderson, and Maverick Carter of SpringHill set to produce. Executive producing the sequel are Justin Lin, Sev Ohanian and Jamal Henderson.

The film, originally released in 2001, counts a global cume of $1,001,260,000 after debuting in a remastered 4K 3D version in China this weekend. The entire series has now grossed $7.74B.
When the 19-year-old HP1 re-released in the Middle Kingdom last Friday, it set a new single-day gross record in the post-covid era, and then did so again on Saturday. Across the three-day session it drew muggles to the tune of $13.6M on 16,000 screens (including $2.1M from 594 IMAX screens). Through Tuesday evening local time, the movie was still playing strongly behind local epic The Eight Hundred.

It was a strange morning for the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Monday, as the organization announced some — but not all — of the TV nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards.
A note included in the official nomination statement explained that the nods for the Comedy Series, Dramatic Series, and Variety/Talk/News/Sports — Specials categories will be announced on Friday, rather than today as scheduled, due to an error related to the organization’s newly implemented electronic entry submissions process. The categories in question require a re-vote, the DGA explained. Variety reported last week that the DGA sent members an email stating that “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway had been mistakenly omitted from the comedy series ballot for her direction of “Transparent Musicale Finale,” and advising members to recast their vote in the category if they so chose.
Still, there were plenty of accolades to go around in the official announcement,...

Two major 2018 releases – actioner “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and critics’ darling “Roma” – were honored for film location work by the Location Managers Guild International at a ceremony this evening at the Eli & Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
The 6th Annual Lmgi Awards also recognized “Chernobyl” and “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” in the television category.
The Lmgi Awards spotlight “productions in which the creative use of filming locations sets the tone, enriches the character and enhances the narrative,” per the organization.
Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” filmed at locations in France, the U.K., Abu Dhabi, Norway and New Zealand. Netflix’s “Roma” was shot in and around Mexico City. HBO’s “Chernobyl” derived its authentic look from locations in Lithuania, not far from Ukraine, where the nuclear disaster itself took place. And Amazon’s “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” traveled to Montreal, Morocco, France and Washington D.C.
