Not only does a traditional concert honor America's military in general this year, it remembers one of its own.
Charles Durning was a Tony-winning and Oscar-nominated co-star of such projects as "The Sting," "Dog Day Afternoon" and "Tootsie"; a recipient of a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for his World War II service; and a frequent participant in the National Memorial Day Concert. The 24th annual event will recall Durning - who died last Christmas Eve - during its PBS telecast Sunday, May 26 (check local listings).
"He's the reason I do the concert," longtime co-host and tireless military supporter Joe Mantegna ("Criminal Minds") tells Zap2it. "I did my very first one on his invitation. Gary Sinise is holding out hope that it isn't the end for "CSI: NY," but he's content with where the show stands for now.
The CBS crime drama ended its ninth season in February, and the network hasn't indicated yet whether it will be renewed. While Sinise is no stranger to being in that position ("We've had that three years in a row now"), he's satisfied that the show's fans have been given some sense of closure, since his Detective Mac Taylor proposed to girlfriend Christine (Megan Dodds). And yes, she said, "Yes."
"If you look at the very first episode of Season 1," Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Sinise tells Zap2it, "Mac is identified as a 9/11 family member, a first responder who lost a loved one in the Twin Towers. He's grieving, and throughout that first season, he's dealing with some of the residual effects.

Joe Mantegna is sure "it isn't a matter of whether" his series "Criminal Minds" will be renewed, but when, and under what terms.
This week, the veteran stage and screen actor is wrapping up filming Season 8 of the typically dark CBS crime drama with night shoots. The two-hour finale that airs Wednesday, May 22, marks a critical showdown with the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit's enemy known as the Replicator ... but Mantegna considers another challenge the show is facing to be less life-or-death.
"We all feel very good, very confident" about the Season 9 order that hasn't come yet, he tells Zap2it. "I don't even feel there's any doubt that we'll get picked up. I think it's all been logistics, because so many contracts are up this season. Out of the seven actors, five of our contracts are up. And all of the writers' contracts, and the show runner's.

As a new year dawns, a tribute to those we've lost in the year now ending is merited ... and in 2012, those sad milestones have encompassed some of the most popular personalities in television history.
Andy Griffith: The actor-producer who put Mayberry on the map forever will be remembered as one of television's most genial personalities, also extending to his run as wily lawyer Matlock.
Dick Clark: The number of music stars who owe at least part of their success to the "American Bandstand" maestro is incalculable. Thanks to him, people also enjoy "New Year's Rockin' Eve," receive American Music Awards and have a greater appreciation of bloopers. Here's a "so long" salute to you, Dick.
Larry Hagman: The truly unfortunate irony of the veteran actor's recent death is that he was just starting his second round of "Dallas" success as master schemer J.R. Ewing. He'll also...

Joe Mantegna knows well that honoring America's veterans involves more than just a couple of days each year.
The "Criminal Minds" star and "Glengarry Glen Ross" Tony Award winner frequently visits military hospitals, in addition to filling his now-traditional role co-hosting PBS' annual National Memorial Day Concert with friend and equally committed soldier supporter Gary Sinise ("CSI: NY"). The two actors have an extra chance to show their appreciation this year, since on Veterans Day, they preside over the inaugural "National Salute to Veterans" special Sunday (Nov. 11) on PBS.
"It's not like we're just doing an entertainment show," Mantegna stresses to Zap2it. "The nature of the Memorial Day concert is that it calls attention to the support and recognition of our military, so the fact that we can do this for Veterans Day is timely and important, I think."

Joe Mantegna isn't concerned about baseball-oriented minds denting "Criminal Minds" too badly.
The veteran actor's long-running CBS crime drama airs a new episode Wednesday (Oct. 24) -- with guest star Ray Wise ("Reaper") as a fearsome doctor -- opposite Game 1 of the World Series on Fox. "My feeling is that we'll get low numbers in San Francisco and Detroit," Mantegna reasons to Zap2it of the cities whose teams are in this year's Fall Classic. "I'm not so worried about the rest of the country.
"One thing about our fan base is that they're very, very loyal, almost rabid in the sense that they really are into the show. They watch the repeats in syndication, and they're just very supportive, so we'll always have that group. We've gone up against 'American Idol,' and the World Series is nothing compared to going against that. We'll see. They may outdraw us tonight,...

The union has 49 other states, but Massachusetts will make a particularly strong showing this Fourth of July.
The reason? The hosts of two of TV's biggest celebrations of America's birthday hail from there: Haverhill native Tom Bergeron ("Dancing With the Stars," "America's Funniest Home Videos") will make his "A Capitol Fourth" debut Wednesday, July 4, on PBS (check local listings); and later that night, Lowell-born, Andover-raised Emmy winner Michael Chiklis ("The Shield") will preside over CBS' "Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular" for the second consecutive year.
Bergeron will have impressive talents to introduce on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. They'll include Oscar-winning film composer John Williams, conducting the National Symphony Orchestra (to be led for most of the evening by Jack Everly) in his "Olympic Fanfare." Washington — The National Memorial Day Concert has been canceled due to a line of thunderstorms that moved into the District of Columbia on Sunday night.
About halfway into the concert, an annual event on the National Mall, host Gary Sinise told the audience there was a severe weather warning and advised concertgoers to leave and seek shelter.
Mike Musher of the National Weather Service says the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest on Sunday.
The Memorial Day concert, broadcast by PBS, features songs from pop and country performers, patriotic music from military bands and stories of heroic acts by U.S. troops. Country singer Trace Adkins and rock band Daughtry had already performed before the plug was pulled Sunday.

Whether someone is an annual participant or a first-timer, the significance of the National Memorial Day Concert is self-evident.
This year, the event -- which PBS televises again on Sunday, May 27, from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. (check local listings) -- has stars of both kinds. Joe Mantegna, fresh off the Season 7 finale of the CBS drama "Criminal Minds," co-hosts the concert with Gary Sinise ("CSI: NY") for the seventh time. And his friend Dennis Franz, the four-time "NYPD Blue" Emmy winner and a Vietnam War veteran, debuts in the concert by giving a dramatic reading.
Also on the guest roster: Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn; music stars Natalie Cole and Trace Adkins; two veterans of Fox's "American Idol," Chris Daughtry (with his band Daughtry) and the just-ended season's Jessica Sanchez; actress Selma Blair ("Legally Blonde"); tenor Russell Watson; and another frequent participant in the event,...

Each Memorial Day, thousands of motorcycles descend on Washington, D.C. for the annual Rolling Thunder ride. The event, now in its 25th year, honors those who died or were captured while serving in the military.
On Sunday (May 27), motorcyclists start at the Pentagon and converge on the National Mall to pause for a ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial. Then, on Monday -- Memorial Day -- there are more events planned, including a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and another at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Roughly 400,000 bikers were expected to ride on Sunday.
"Todd and I and our family would like to wish you all a happy Memorial Day weekend," tweeted Sarah Palin on Friday (May 25). "We'd especially like to offer our best wishes to our friends in Rolling Thunder who will be taking part in their Ride for Freedom this weekend in D.C. as they do each year...

If the weather doesn’t hold up for you, Memorial Day weekend won’t be spent grilling on the beach. But here’s the good news: There are plenty of TV marathons and specials to be found — plus, you’re being patriotic, in a way, by being an all-American couch potato. In addition to our What to Watch column (posting Sunday, and going weekly for the summer), here are some programs to keep on your radar.

Gary Sinise will be where most people now expect him to be on Memorial Day weekend.

Criminal Minds star Joe Mantegna has a message for Americans this Memorial Day: Our veterans need jobs.
Mantegna, who will return as co-host of Monday's National Memorial Day Concert on PBS with fellow CBS star Gary Sinise, is also actively working with America Wants You!, a new initiative that encourages corporate America to hire men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Mantegna and Criminal Minds co-star Thomas Gibson have also filmed PSAs to spread the word.

Tonight at 9/8c, CBS’ CSI: NY presents its season finale, in which a shooting leaves Mac hovering between life and death, precipitating a visit from his late wife, Claire. Meanwhile, the crime drama itself finds itself hoping to cheat death by earning the Season 9 renewal that thus far has eluded it. TVLine spoke with series lead Gary Sinise about the “very reflective” hour, why the show’s uncertain fate made it extra-emotional, and his latest turn as cohost of PBS’ Memorial Day weekend concert special.

Gary Sinise knows tonight (Friday, May 11) could end a long chapter of his career, but he's hoping for a different outcome.

The decision will be known next week, when CBS stages its 2012-13 upfront presentation for advertisers. "It's a great finale," Sinise promises, "very emotional and very different from some of our other episodes. In the last days of shooting,...

Dennis Franz still smiles about "the wonderful day" he had with his former "NYPD Blue" partners, particularly his first one, several months ago.
David Caruso famously left producer Steven Bochco's groundbreaking ABC police drama after attaining overnight stardom in the show's first season, and it would be a number of years until success came his way again with his Horatio Caine role on CBS' "CSI: Miami." He and later "Blue" regulars Jimmy Smits and Rick Schroder reunited with Franz at an Entertainment Weekly photo shoot last fall.
Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played the last partner of Franz's Detective Andy Sipowicz, was out of the country at the time. "He was understanding about it," the pleasant Franz tells Zap2it, "and I missed him dearly, but I loved seeing Jimmy and Rick again ... and, so importantly, the affection that David Caruso and I shared was so moving and uplifting to me.

Joe Mantegna confirms it's a week of mixed emotions on the set of "Criminal Minds."
The cast and crew of the CBS crime drama are wrapping up work on the seventh-season finale, a rare two-hour episode set to air Wednesday, May 16. While the extended length is a nod to the show's continued strength, it also marks the departure of Paget Brewster -- alias Agent Emily Prentiss of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit -- as a cast regular.
"It's going to be different than the last time," Mantegna tells Zap2it about the actress' second exit from the series. "First of all, this is her choice. Second of all, it's not being done in a cataclysmic kind of way. There will always exist a window for her to reappear in some capacity. I think she just wants to move on, but she's open to coming in and having the Prentiss character still be involved.

Joe Mantegna has had emotional Memorial Days, but the next one could be unto itself.
The star of CBS' "Criminal Minds" has been the longtime host -- along with Gary Sinise ("CSI: NY") -- of PBS' annual telecast of the National Memorial Day Concert, set this year for Sunday, May 29. Part of the program will be a 10th-anniversary commemoration of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and with last weekend's elimination of Osama bin Laden by U.S. forces, Mantegna anticipates the Washington, D.C.-based occasion being particularly significant.
"The first time I ever did the concert," he tells Zap2it, "the segment I did was a tribute to firemen who lost sons in 9/11. I basically had to eulogize four firemen who were sons of four retired firemen sitting in front of me. On the screens next to me, they were showing the planes going into the World Trade Center, and the orchestra was playing Mozart's Requiem.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

Video performances during PBS' National Memorial Day Concert on Sunday, May 24 have hit the web, some of which featured "American Idol" alum Katharine McPhee. They showed the 25-year-old singer making a duet with pianist Lang Lang in a song titled "America the Beautiful" and performing solo in another track called "Somewhere".
Another musical guest hitting the annual event at the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol was Trace Adkins. He performed solo in "Til the Last Shot's Fired", one of the songs from his 2008 album "X". He also collaborated with Katharine, Denyce Graves and Colm Wilkinson in "This Is My Country".
Greater than that, the gig was also attended by Hollywood public figures, including Katie Holmes, Gary Sinise, Joe Mantegna, Dianne Wiest, Laurence Fishburne and Brian Stokes Mitchell. They took the stage during Trace and Katharine's duet song.

Katie Holmes fought back tears as she read aloud from a soldier's memoirs at a rehearsal for a Memorial Day tribute honouring U.S. war veterans.
Holmes appeared emotional as she rehearsed on the Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, preparing to take part in the 20th annual National Memorial Day Concert the following day.
The actress told the heart-wrenching story of the sister of injured Iraq war veteran Jose Pequeno, while her All My Sons co-star Dianne Wiest portrayed his mother Nellie Bagley.
And the star insists she was honoured to have been able to participate in the event.
She says, "It's important to tell these stories and honour the sacrifice and service of these men and women and their families. It's a real gift to be able to portray an American of such strength. I'm excited. I want to do justice to her story."...
