"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" was a surprise hit three years ago and earned a legion of fans around the world. The ensemble drama about a group of British senior citizens taking up residence in an Indian hotel was missing one key moment, however. Oscar winners Judi Dench and Maggie Smith barely had a scene together. Ol Parker, who wrote both "Exotic" and the sequel "Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," takes complete responsibility. "I [expletive] up the first time," Parker says speaking to HitFix earlier this month. "I mean they don’t talk. They literally don’t talk for the first movie." That's not entirely true. Evelyn (Dench) and Muriel (Smith) do have a brief exchange towards the end of the film, but it sadly alludes to their lack of screen time. Muriel notes, "We haven't talked much, you and I" and Evelyn replies, "My looks evidently." Parker recalls, "You’ve got these two titans,...

Ol Parker knew he had his work cut out when adapting Deborah Moggach's 2004 novel "These Foolish Things" into “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” As he told Gold Derby, “When you’re writing a script with nine different storylines, the challenge is in keeping the audience interested. The cast helped tremendously with that. But then the challenge is in getting them.” -Insertgroups:8- But Parker, who just turned 43, couldn’t resist the idea of writing, “a romantic comedy for old people. It was so endearing to me to think of people in their 60s and 70s being as fumbling and awkward as people in their 20s. What appealed to me about this story was that it wasn’t old people doing old people things. Nor was it old people doing young people things. It was just old people being people.” The film centers around seven British retirees -- Judi Dench, Maggie Smith,...

It looks like the charming geriatric tale The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel gets the honor of being one of those rare comedies that gets a sequel. Movie Scope has learned the 2011 film from director John Madden and writer Ol Parker has a greenlit follow-up in development at Fox Searchlight. Based on Deborah Moggach's novel These Foolish Things, the film followed a group of British retirees - composed of British talents like Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy - who decide to take their retirement to less the expensive and exotic India at the restore Marigold Hotel that has since fallen apart. Parker will return to script the sequel (though there's no book for it to be based on this time), but it's not clear if Madden will return to direct. Most of the original cast is expected to return as well, but there's no release window...

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Anyone who saw Memento upon release surely could never envisage the career path that its London-born director, Christopher Nolan, would take, moving from hugely impressive small, independent films to being the king of big budget and, along with Darren Aronofsky, surely Hollywood’s premier filmmaker.
The crescendo of this status will come this summer, with the opening of The Dark Knight Rises, perhaps one of the most hotly anticipated films of all time. This a film so craved that millions attended cinema screens purely to watch its first full length official trailer.
When Nolan was approached to helm a new take on the caped crusader, he was approaching a specialized genre with little of any background in the field. Rather than become a superhero film director, he took the central cores of Batman and approached them conventionally, with no interest in camp theatrics and cheapened sensibilities.
The result was Batman Begins,...

The Debt, a thriller due in theaters on August 31, arrives courtesy of John Madden, the director who hit big with Shakespeare in Love, missed bigger with Captain Corelli's Mandolin and broke boringly even with Proof, which wasn't bad, but would've been much better had the producers gone with Mary Louise-Parker (who starred in the Broadway production), rather than installing Gwyneth Paltrow as Oscar bait.
Now comes The Debt and one wonders where it will fall on the Madden Continuum. Will it skew toward Shakespeare or fall into Captain Corelli territory? Based on the film's trailer, I think it's safe to say Madden's latest ain't Shakespeare — hell, Shakespeare in Love ain't Shakespeare — but The Debt seems to have all the ingredients necessary for a satisfying night at the movies, specifically: Helen Mirren and Nazis. What else do you need from a movie?

Two From Powell/Pressburger Criterion releases gorgeous new transfers of two of the greatest films to come out of post-war Britain, from that period’s greatest filmmaking team: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Black Narcissus was originally released in 1947 and caused a sensation with its explosive story about a nun (Deborah Kerr), cloistered in a remote convent in the Himalayas, who must battle elements both external (the punishing weather) and internal (temptations of the flesh over duty to the spirit). Also features stellar turns by England’s greatest actresses at the time: Flora Robson, Kathleen Byron and a young Jean Simmons. One of the most dazzling films ever made, bolstered by Oscar-winning cinematography from Jack Cardiff. In The Spotlight – Degrassi: The Next Generation, Clara Sheller, and River City
This week we look at three very different series that hail from three different countries. But all have one thing in common: each tell interesting and intriguing stories about the lives and loves of gay men.
First up, Degrassi: The Next Generation and ‘The Life of Riley’.
Riley Stavros, played by Argiris Karras, is the long running Canadian teen drama’s latest entry in its much-lauded history of depicting the lives of gay characters. But two recent episodes clearly showed Riley is very different from Degrassi’s last gay character, Marco (out actor Adamo Ruggiero). Where Marco was openly gay and never struggled with his sexual identity, it’s been nothing but a constant battle for Riley. In fact, he hates being gay and desperately wishes things were different. But as we see in this first clip, he...
