Triumph over adversity is drama defined, and Oscar nominations often go to actors whose characters find victory over physical or mental afflictions. The earliest example goes back to 1947; that was the year that non-pro Harold Russell won Best Supporting Actor and a special award for “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Russell was a WWII veteran who lost both of his hands while making a training film. Of note: Of the 59, 27 of these nominations went on to a win. This year’s roster of stars playing afflicted characters includes Jake Gyllenhaal as bombing victim Jeff Baumer in “Stronger,” Andrew Garfield as polio survivor Robin Cavendish in “Breathe,” Bryan Cranston as a millionaire quadriplegic in “The Upside,” and Sally Hawkins in two roles, as an arthritic painter in “Maudie” and a mute lab worker in “The Shape of Water.”

Howdy, pardners. It’s western movie roundup time at Cinema Retro today. Here are a handful of oldie westerns recently released on DVD by the Warner Archive- and which are now available in the Cinema Retro Movie Store. And a rootin’, tootin’, downright interesting bunch of movies they are.
Station West
First up, “Station West” with Dick Powell and Jane Greer. Ever wonder what would happen if private dick Philip Marlowe traveled back in time to the old west and tried to solve a murder case? That’s essentially what you have with Station West, an offbeat western filmed in black and white that plays like film noir, except all the men wear wide-brimmed Stetsons instead of Fedoras, and shoot Colt Peacemakers and Winchesters instead of snubbed nosed .38s. To further mix up the western and detective genres Jane Greer, the most fatale of all femme fatales,...

Teresa Wright-Samuel Goldwyn association comes to a nasty end (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt': Alfred Hitchcock Heroine in His Favorite Film.") Whether or not because she was aware that Enchantment wasn't going to be the hit she needed – or perhaps some other disagreement with Samuel Goldwyn or personal issue with husband Niven Busch – Teresa Wright, claiming illness, refused to go to New York City to promote the film. (Top image: Teresa Wright in a publicity shot for The Men.) Goldwyn had previously announced that Wright, whose contract still had another four and half years to run, was to star in a film version of J.D. Salinger's 1948 short story "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut." Instead, he unceremoniously – and quite publicly – fired her.[1] The Goldwyn organization issued a statement, explaining that besides refusing the assignment to travel to New York to help generate pre-opening publicity for Enchantment,...

Question: What has 16 pound balls and just pissed off former NFL star Shawne Merriman??Answer: Some bowling company in Utah that's hawking balls with his catchphrase. The ex-linebacker has just declared legal war on a bowling company called "Storm" -- which hawks various bowling products on its website ... including a ball emblazoned with the words, "Lights Out."Of course, Merriman claims he owns the trademark to "Lights Out" -- the nickname he's had since high...

Back in the fall, I was reasonably impressed with "Kingdom," the new drama airing on DirecTV's Audience Network. It seemed to be transplanting bits of pieces of recent cable dramas (a splash of "Sons of Anarchy," a healthy serving of "Lights Out," etc.), but with solid writing and directing, and an excellent cast led by Frank Grillo. I lost track of "Kingdom" for a while (I had seen the first four episodes before debut) because there was so much else to watch and write about in the fall, but I caught up in time for tonight's season finale, and I remain pleased. It's not doing anything particularly novel, but it's doing things well, it's taking its time with various storylines (like Nate's secret), and it's giving all the actors good things to play. (Jonathan Tucker in particular had himself a nice first season.) Not much else to say on my part,...

Here’s the thing about Matthew McConaughey: he’s the most fascinating man alive. He loves bongos, weed, and nudity. He hates deodorant and basic hygiene.
He sells cars but sells you no bull. He’s some kind of magical hippie drifter who just showed up in our lives to make everything better and prettier (but not necessarily more good-smelling) and we should be thankful every single day for that.
So, let’s look back on the greatest life lessons McConaughey ever gave us.

When “With the Lights Out” was released ten years ago the Nirvana vault was pretty much emptied, but much of the collection had been floating around online for years. Despite how thorough the release was, there are alternate versions of many of the songs included in the package out there; live cuts, alternate mixes, and so on. Not all the renditions that made the final package were the best ones, and not everything was actually included – but most of the best stuff was.
If you haven’t listened to the box set, or weren’t the type of fan to trade in bootlegs and demo tapes when the band was at its peak, then you might have missed some of these gems. A few are diamonds in the rough, others are unpolished songs with potential, where the groundwork is there – you can hear, if you really give them a good listen,...

In the third episode of "Kingdom," DirecTV's new drama series set in the world of mixed martial arts, one of the main characters gives an impromptu boxing lesson to his often-bullied roommate. When the roommate is reluctant to punch him in the face, our hero cheerfully insists, "Look, I get punched in the face for a living. This is not going to hurt me." This is the most important thing to note about the men of "Kingdom," whether their storylines directly involve Mma or not. In a tumultuous world, being hit, and hitting back, is the one constant in their lives — and not just when they're in the cage. When a problem presents itself, their first, second and third impulse is to clench their fists and find a way to punch back. Created by Byron Belasco, "Kingdom" is DirecTV's latest attempt to use its Audience Network (the first episode debuts...

Batgirl has undergone several transformations over the years, with the most recent redo (brought on by The New 52) being met with much fanfare as it saw the return of the original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, to the role. Also having Gail Simone writing the book doesn’t hurt either. While most were excited about the pairing and what it would bring, this move came right after the previous creative team had solidified Stephanie Brown as a worthy successor. Since The New 52, she has yet to resurface. While I was ecstatic to have Babara back, there was a small raincloud above the whole thing. DC had finally gotten me to care about Stephanie and get into the book's overall light-hearted tone, and then they yank the rug out from under me.

Did you get queasy watching this week’s storm-filled episode of Deadliest Catch? You are not alone.

It’s official: Disney's "Frozen" is the longest-running No. 1 soundtrack by an animated film. "Frozen" had its biggest sales week to date — thanks to Easter shopping — selling 259,000 copies (+ 94%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album has spent 11 nonconsecutive weeks in the top spot of the Billboard 200, beating the previous record holder, Disney's "The Lion King," which reigned for 10. "Frozen" has sold 2.3 million copies since it came out in November. A No. 2 is hip-hop singer August Alsina’s debut album, "Testimony,” with 190,000. Rock band Needtobreathe enters at No. 3 with “Rivers In the Wasteland" (49,000), earning its highest-charting effort to date. Its 2011 album, "The Reckoning,” debuted and and peaked at No. 6. Jason Derulo’s "Talk Dirty” scores his first-ever top 10 album, starting at No. 4 with 44,000. His 2010 self-titled debut sold 42,000 copies in its first week. The title track off "Talk Dirty” hit No. 1 on the pop songs airplay chart this week. Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson’s "Lights Out" bows at No.

Emily brings out the Red Sharpie for a white collar criminal, but who is holding … Black Sharpie?
Here are five highlights: (This episode was better than the last few, if only because there were more entertaining Wtf moments)
Learning His Lesson
Nolan is worried about Javier. First, it’s obvious he’s hiding something in his room, but Nolan doesn’t realize it’s a Grayson (sadly, it’s the annoying teenager Grayson, not the older belligerent one). Javier is over the moon, not only is he banging an heiress, but she and the belligerent one have promised to help Javier with his weird Clone app.
When Javier finally tells Nolan that he’s decided to partner up with Daniel (and what could go wrong?), Nolan is genuinely upset that Javier is going the Grayson route, because he’s seen the carnage that results. But Javier...

Singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson first came to prominence seven years ago after “Grey’s Anatomy” used her song “Keep Breathing,” followed by Old Navy appropriating “The Way I Am” to sell sweaters during 2007’s holiday season. But fans of those songs who delved deeper found that Michaelson had much more to offer than songs that licensed for TV placements. Her confessional, vulnerable lyrics, delivered by her crystalline vocals quickly caught on with followers of such artists as Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, and Rachael Yamagata. Next Tuesday (April 15), Michaelson will release “Lights Out,” led by the soaring, fun first single, “Girls Chase Boys.” The song caught fire not only for its catchiness, but also for its gender-bending video, which pays homage to Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” iconic clip. Her last album, 2012's "Human Again," debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Michaelson appeared at the Grammy Museum earlier this...

It may not be Halloween season, but there’s never a bad time for a good scare – and filmmaker David F. Sandberg has delivered just that in his award-winning short film Lights Out. You’ll be looking for a night-light after watching this, trust us. The story is simple: a woman prepares for bed, only to discover that something might be lurking in the shadows of her home. Next thing you know, a grown woman has reverted right back to her childhood. (Pro Tip: hiding under the covers never fools any monsters.) Is she just imagining things, or is there something genuinely malevolent stalking her? You’ll have to wait until the last shot to know for sure. Take a look at Lights Out below – just make sure you’re watching it in a well-lit room. We take no...

We've got a great, scary, horror movie short that definitely has the ability to freak you the hell out! I do have to say it's best watched in the dark with the volume turned up. It's a simple concept, but it was executed so freakin' well! The movie is called "Lights Out," and it was directed by David F. Sandberg. You know that I'm a huge fan of horror movies, and I absolutely loved this! It's an effective horror film that does its job, and it wowed me!

Lights out! Kate Hudson swapped her ethereal pale silver Atelier Versace gown for a smoldering darker dress at the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party on Sunday, Mar. 2. The Oscar presenter, 34, looked gorgeous in a cap sleeve black-and-nude illusion gown from Zuhair Murad's spring 2014 couture collection. The star's embroidered gown featured a sheer silk skirt and plunging illusion neckline with hand-beaded detail on the bottom of her skirt. Hudson's after party outfit was a sharp contrast from her iridescent silver gown with cape detail on the [...]...

This year’s Best Actor race is shaping up to be one of the greatest of all time. And by greatest, I mean both the most competitive and also the most outstanding, in the sense that each nominee is excellent — hypothetical winners in almost any other year. They also reflect the depth of superb male performances in 2013. Consider: Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Robert Redford (All Is Lost), Joaquin Phoneix (Her), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), and Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) all missed the cut.

The new 52, some love it, others absolutely despise it. However, something was recently pointed out to me concerning the Lantern books. Throughout the emotional spectrum, the Lanterns' main job is to protect the universe, with the Green Lanterns being at the center of it all. But almost since the launch of the new 52 two years ago, the Lanterns haven't been fighting for the universe, but for themselves -- war between Lanterns, the first one, the new one, the guardians. What was once a cool and unique take on the Lantern mythos soon became old and incredibly overplayed. I was optimistic at first, thinking this may be a plot point with the Justice League or just heroes in general realizing that the Lanterns aren't protecting anyone but themselves, but it hasn't.
Now don't get me wrong, there are some aspects of the new 52 Lantern books that I absolutely love. For instance,...

Green Lantern: New Guardians #24 – Justin Jordan & Brad WalkerThis. Issue. Is. Completely. Pointless. Listen, I absolutely love Green Lantern and the mythos and all those corps and stuff like that (except for a few) but I really, Really can’t get behind this event At All. It’s utter garbage, really. I’m going to talk about spoilers here because It Doesn’T Matter If I Spoil A Crap Book For You. I really apologize for the rant, but when characters I love are treated by such horrible writers, especially after a prophecy has been set in place. Green Lantern’s new event – Lights Out – has done absolutely Nothing for any of the characters, and it hasn’t even developed Anyone including the main villain at hand. So, Relic just wants to destroy all the Corps? Not like we haven’t Seen This Before. In Green Lantern: New Guardians...

Since their debut in November 2012, The Shield has definitely changed the landscape of the WWE. Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose have brought justice to the developmental system by making first impressions all the more important. However, in recent weeks, it seemed the three have taken a backseat to other storylines and showed vulnerability piling up losses. This week justice looks to be a priority again on this week’s Main Event and Nxt.
Let’s start with the first of two appearances on this weeks edition of The Main Event. The show begins with a six man tag rematch from last week’s Monday Night Raw as the Usos and Mark Henry battle The Shield. Really solid opening contest with good back and forth between the two trios. The babyfaces start off really hot dominating until the first commercial break and then it switches as the Hounds of Justice take control.

You can just about forgive the reactionary tone in this atmospheric drama about an agoraphobic man tormented by feral youths
Lights out, hoods up. Cue screeching as feral youths take on Tommy (Aneurin Barnard), an agoraphobic dad trapped in a rundown housing estate. Ciaran Foy wrote this based on his own trauma after being assaulted, so you can almost forgive the reactionary tone. Still, it's a shame he made the threat tangible. The opening act spins an atmospheric psychological drama out of Tommy's illness – is the gang made up of monsters? Or kids? Then the hoods come down; the enemy's made clear and we're stumbling in horror trope territory. The teens climb the walls. Tommy turns macho in dull, grisly style. Foy's talent lies in suggesting horror, not delivering it.

One body, severed in half, dumped at the border.
That’s the launching point for FX’s new drama, The Bridge.
Sounds like the start of just another sick, crime drama trying to push the envelope, right? Here’s the rub… the body belongs to two different women of two different ethnic groups: the top half belongs belongs to a white judge from El Paso, Texas and the bottom half is from a Mexican teen from Juarez, south of the border.
Enter Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger), an El Paso detective with asperger’s, and Marc Ruiz (Demian Bichir), a Chihuahua detective held at bay by cartel rules governing his part of Mexico.
The Bridge isn’t your typical buddy cop drama, filled with sexual tension and a lot of sensationalized criminal characters and Lethal Weapon wannabe heroes. Marc is happily married and Sonya wouldn’t know the meaning of empathy...

It looks as though DC Comics is adding a little more color to its ongoing monthly lineup. The Sinestro Corps (the evil, yellow version of the better-known Green Lantern Corps) appears to be the next Lantern team to be getting its very own monthly title, which will spin out of the upcoming Green Lanterns “Lights Out” event.
Bleeding Cool reports that Sinestro Corps will be officially announced at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con International, this July 18 through the 21, bringing the total number of current Green Lantern Corps spin-off titles to six.
The question on the minds of most fans (mine included) is whether these ne’er-do-well, citrus-tinted Lanterns remain a villainous force in the DC universe or embrace a new role as anti-heroes a la the Red Lanterns (the last offshoot of the Green Lanterns to be granted their own monthly). Only time, and the marketability of yet another Green Lanterns spin-off,...

If you think the premise of Nate Southard’s novel Lights Out – vampires invade a maximum security prison – is little more than an excuse to stage a giant, bloody brawl, it’s a forgivable assumption. Fortunately, Southard had a little more on his mind when he set out to write the book. It’s not “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,” mind you, but it’s a far cry from Jason vs. Freddy. How so? Well, for one thing, Southard has stocked the cupboard with a handful of believable, even relatable characters, people that you can root for (or against) when the plasma hits the fan. To be honest, I wasn’t sure he was going to pull this off at first. After a claustrophobic opening which introduces Southard’s version of vampires, the horrific elements slide into the background while we get to know the people who will soon be fighting for their lives.
