There are just a few hours left for the 96th Academy Awards to finally take place and honor the careers of people involved in the art of filmmaking. For years, acclaimed personalities like Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, and others, have etched their place in the entertainment industry by achieving several coveted awards.

It was the best of years, it was the worst of years. It was the year of ass-buster running times.
Yes, we are wading into the deep and murky waters of running times! With a cinematic release calendar stocked with two-and-a-half-hour-plus films, the conversation is a hard one to avoid. And as always, the men who make the movies Have Thoughts.
“People say it’s three hours, but come on,” Martin Scorsese said of his “Killers of the Flower Moon.” “You can sit in front of the TV and watch something for five hours. Also, there are many people who watch theater for three-and-a-half hours. There are real actors on stage, you can’t get up and walk around. You give it that respect, give cinema some respect.”
Let’s unpack this attitude!
We all agree that movies are not television. And yet directors continue to petulantly point out that...

Long live the queen, but not Olivia Colman’s Golden Globes record. The three-time champ suffered her first loss(es) on Sunday night, losing Best TV Drama Actress to Emma Corrin, her co-star on “The Crown,” and Best Film Supporting Actress to Jodie Foster for “The Mauritanian.”
Colman had entered the night with a perfect 3-for-3 record, having garnered Best TV Supporting Actress for “The Night Manager” in 2017, Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for “The Favourite” in 2019 and Best TV Drama Actress for “The Crown” last year.
Most didn’t expect Colman to maintain her flawless record. She was in second place in the TV drama actress odds, behind Corrin, and in third in the film supporting actress odds, trailing Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), while Foster was in fourth.

Meryl Streep is predicted to extend her Golden Globes record with a 33rd nomination for her star turn in the Netflix musical “The Prom.” She plays a Broadway diva down on her luck who seizes on the plight of a high school senior (Jo Ellen Pellman) prevented from taking her girlfriend to the prom. Streep shines in the musical numbers and has some lovely quieter moments as well. Not surprisingly, this favorite of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. sits atop our Best Musical/Comedy Actress chart.
Streep has won a record eight Golden Globes from her 32 nominations to date. Seven of those victories have been for films (her single TV win came for her leading role in the 2003 HBO limited series “Angels in America”). Her first time to the podium was way back in 1980 for her supporting role in “Kramer vs. Kramer.” She went on to win her first Oscar for that featured performance.

We are predicting that Meryl Streep will have to make more room on her already crowded mantle as she is tipped to take home her ninth Golden Globe for her star turn in the Netflix musical “The Prom.” Streep sits atop our Best Musical/Comedy Actress chart for her role as a Broadway diva hoping to revitalize her career by promoting the plight of a high school girl (Jo Ellen Pellman) who is prevented from taking her girlfriend to the prom. Streep dazzles in a string of song-and-dance numbers and has some lovely quieter moments too.

Rosalind & Loretta, friends and Best Actress rivalsSuch a forgone conclusion was the result of the final award at the 20th Academy Awards, that the audience at the back of the Shrine Auditorium had already started filing out as Frederic March rose to announce the Best Actress winner. They soon stopped in their tracks as a huge gasp swept around the room. No one was more surprised than the previous year’s Best Actor champ who is said to have started reading the name of the expected winner, Rosalind Russell for Mourning Becomes Electra, before stopping and declaring that the awards was, in fact, going to rank outsider Loretta Young for the comedic trifle The Farmers Daughter. This article contains major Hollywood spoilers. You can find our easter egg guide for the previous episode here.
Don’t you just love a happy ending? Ryan Murphy clearly did with regards to Hollywood, and while we had mixed ideas of our own about that conclusion, there is no denying how gratifying it is to see representation shared with those whom society marginalized for years and centuries. There is a real sugar rush of “what if” good cheer about the series’ version of Oscar night 1948. Here are some of the facts the series changed, and some other shout-outs it enjoyed in its closing moments.
Hollywood Episode 7
-The Meg editor admits he didn’t shtup Gloria Swanson. He only got to third base while she was on the rebound after Joe Kennedy dumped her. This would’ve placed the screening room action around 1928 or ’29—an affair Swanson denied until she finally admitted it in her 1980 autobiography.

Loretta Young films as TCM celebrates her 102nd birthday (photo: Loretta Young ca. 1935) Loretta Young would have turned 102 years old today. Turner Classic Movies is celebrating the birthday of the Salt Lake City-born, Academy Award-winning actress today, January 6, 2015, with no less than ten Loretta Young films, most of them released by Warner Bros. in the early '30s. Young, who began her film career in a bit part in the 1927 Colleen Moore star vehicle Her Wild Oat, remained a Warners contract player from the late '20s up until 1933. (See also: "Loretta Young Movies.") Now, ten Loretta Young films on one day may sound like a lot, but one should remember that most Warner Bros. -- in fact, most Hollywood -- releases of the late '20s and early '30s were either B Movies or programmers. The latter were relatively short (usually 60 to 75 minutes) feature films starring A (or B+) performers,...

Veterans Day movies on TCM: From 'The Sullivans' to 'Patton' (photo: George C. Scott in 'Patton') This evening, Turner Classic Movies is presenting five war or war-related films in celebration of Veterans Day. For those outside the United States, Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, which takes place in late May. (Scroll down to check out TCM's Veterans Day movie schedule.) It's good to be aware that in the last century alone, the U.S. has been involved in more than a dozen armed conflicts, from World War I to the invasion of Iraq, not including direct or indirect military interventions in countries as disparate as Iran, Guatemala, and Chile. As to be expected in a society that reveres people in uniform, American war movies have almost invariably glorified American soldiers even in those rare instances when they have dared to criticize the military establishment.

It's been 27 years since Kelly McGillis starred opposite Tom Cruise in "Top Gun" as his instructor and love interest, though the film is arguably as much a part of the zeitgeist now as it ever was — hence its upcoming re-release in IMAX 3D. After "Top Gun," McGillis went on to a prolific film and stage career, including roles in "The Accused," "Winter People" and "The Innkeepers."
We spoke with McGillis in advance of the release of "Top Gun: An IMAX 3D Experience" about sex scenes with Cruise, thinking about "Top Gun" at the supermarket and, of course, the volleyball scene. "Top Gun" in 3D is currently in theaters with the Blu-ray release set for Feb. 19.

Kirk Douglas is Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Month of September. Though hardly a great film actor — or even a good one — Douglas has had one of the longest and most prestigious film careers anywhere in the world. That's probably because enough audience members loved how Douglas ferociously attacked his characters — instead of merely bringing them to life. [Kirk Douglas Movie Schedule.] The 94-year-old actor (who'll be turning 95 next December 9) starred or was featured in numerous major classics — and a number of minor ones — from the mid-'40s to the mid'-60s, nabbing three Best Actor Oscar nominations along the way. He has continued working since then, but for the most part his projects have been low-quality fare. The list of Kirk Douglas' movie classics, however, is quite long. It includes Jacques Tourneur's film noir Out of the Past (1947); Mark Robson's boxing melodrama Champion (1949), for which Douglas received his first...

Director best known for the visually splendid and energetic Zorba the Greek
Although the first Greek films appeared in 1912, long periods of war and instability crippled any attempts at forming a national film industry. This meant that few features were produced until the 1950s, when the director Michael Cacoyannis, who has died aged 90, became the embodiment of Greek cinema, giving it an international reputation which reached a peak of popularity with his Zorba the Greek (1964).
Based on Nikos Kazantzakis's novel, the film burst on to the screen with extraordinary energy and visual splendour. It brilliantly combined the rhythmic music of Mikis Theodorakis and the Oscar-winning black-and-white cinematography of Walter Lassally with indelible performances by Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Irene Papas and Lila Kedrova (who won the Oscar for best supporting actress).

Michael Cacoyannis, best known for the 1964 Oscar-nominated drama Zorba the Greek, died of complications from a heart attack and chronic respiratory problems early Monday at an Athens hospital. He was either 89 or 90, depending on the source. Born in Limassol, Cyprus, on June 11, 1921 or 1922, the young Cacoyannis (Mihalis Kakogiannis in Greek) was sent to London to study Law, but later turned to the theater, studying Drama at the Old Vic and playing various roles on the British stage, including the lead in Albert Camus' Caligula. Unable to find work in the British film industry, he eventually moved to Athens. Cacoyannis' directorial debut took place in the early '50s, with the breezy comedy Windfall in Athens (1955), whose production lasted two years. International acclaim followed the release of Stella (1955), which was screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. This drama about a free-spirited young woman (Melina Mercouri) torn by her...

Joanna Murray-Smith's farcical satire "The Female of the Species" seems to call for careful casting of a collegial ensemble of skilled comedic actors. The play revolves around a self-centered feminist author—whose works include "Madame Ovary"—when various people whose lives she affected descend on her home. The American premiere opens this week at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, directed by Randall Arney. Annette Bening ("American Beauty," "Hedda Gabler" at the Geffen Playhouse) stars as Margot the author. While Margot struggles with her current manuscript, a former student, played by Merritt Wever ("Cavedweller," New York Theatre Workshop), arrives, bent on revenge. So, coincidentally, does Margot's daughter Tess, played by Mireille Enos ("Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" Broadway revival). David Arquette ("Hamlet 2") plays Tess' husband; Josh Stamberg ("Distracted" at the Roundabout) plays the cabbie who drove Tess there; and Julian Sands ("Stuff Happens" at the Mark Taper Forum) plays Margot's friend and publisher.
