For those who have watched “Mozart in the Jungle” you’ve probably seen Dermot Mulroney as world-renowned cello soloist Andrew Walsh. The actor, known for such films and series as “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Shameless” and “The Wedding Date,” really is a professional musician who picked up the cello at the age of seven.
As his acting career took off, music was put to the side until he became an established actor. Now, Mulroney’s most recent work as a cellist is being part of Michael Giacchino’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” score, where he held the 11th seat in the cello section, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Mulroney and Giacchino first met at the premiere of the 2005 rom-com “The Family Stone,” which Mulroney starred and Giacchino scored.

Earlier this year, we turned a little green with envy when it was revealed that Fox Searchlight had created a scoreless print of Terrence Malick‘s beautiful “The Tree Of Life,” for a special screening at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, where the film was accompanied by a live score from the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and choir. That event happened back in June, and now that experience is coming to U.S.

Many consider Dmitri Shostakovich the greatest composer of the 20th century. Born September 25, 1906, he might not have lived past his teens if he hadn't been talented. During the famines of the Revolutionary period in Russia, Alexander Glazunov, director of the Petrograd (later Leningrad) Conservatory, arranged for the poor and malnourished Shostakovich's food ration to be increased. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, his graduation exercise for Maximilian Steinberg's composition course at the Conservatory, was completed in 1925 at age 19 and was an immediate success worldwide. He was The Party's poster boy; his Second and Third Symphonies unabashedly subtitled, respectively, "To October". (celebrating the Revolution) and "The First of May". (International Workers' Day).
His highly emotional harmonic language is simultaneously tough yet communicative, but his expansion of Mahlerian symphonic structure, dissonances, sardonic irony, and dark moods eventually clashed with the conservative edicts of Communist Party officials. In 1936 he was viciously denounced by Pravda...

While we've wondered about the diminishing returns of Terrence Malick's recent work, there is no question 2011's "The Tree Of Life" is a powerful piece of cinema. A universe-spanning tale about fathers and sons, love, grief, faith and more, Malick's poetic marriage of visuals and philosophical musings is potent, and is aided by solid performances from Jessica Chastain, Brad Pitt and Tye Sheridan that manage to comfortably slide into ambitious scope of the picture. But one of the other big highlights of the film is the music, and it will be taking center stage in a new screening. Barry Manilow was set to close the show at the PBS' 33rd annual A Capitol Fourth celebration in Washington, D.C. last night and boy, did he ever. The 70-year-old performed classics, like show-closer "Let Freedom Ring," to a crowd of thousands. The festivities also included a performance from Neil Diamond (who sang "Sweet Caroline" to honor the victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing), selections from Lincoln played by the National Symphony Orchestra and a fireworks display. This wasn't Manilow's first time headlining the Capitol Fourth presentation—back in 2009 he led the show and was requested this year by popular demand. We think this smooth crooner is better than...

Not only does a traditional concert honor America's military in general this year, it remembers one of its own.
Charles Durning was a Tony-winning and Oscar-nominated co-star of such projects as "The Sting," "Dog Day Afternoon" and "Tootsie"; a recipient of a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for his World War II service; and a frequent participant in the National Memorial Day Concert. To the Wonder will finally, finally unveil itself at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday, and reviews from scenic Italy would, normally, be the most substantial reports on the film so far. A few days out from its first screening, after all, the closest thing to an update involves those who didn’t make it past Terrence Malick’s editing scissors.
Update: The first reviews have arrived from Venice, check them out here and read on for more details below.
Before that, we’ve got something which, if you’ll excuse the overwhelming bravado, peels back far more layers than anything else up to this point, possibly more than anything short of seeing the actual film. “That’s not saying much,” one could argue, and they’d be right — again, you only know Rachel Weisz probably won’t attend the premiere — so how about a full synopsis, eye-opening comments from Ben Affleck,...

Washington — America will get to hear from its newest "American Idol" at this year's July Fourth celebration on the National Mall as Phillip Phillips makes his comeback performance following kidney surgery, organizers say.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press ahead of Monday's announcement, the 21-year-old from Leesburg, Ga., said he was excited to visit the nation's capital for the first time. Phillips, a bluesy guitar man, said he's been focused on recovering from a serious kidney surgery since "Idol's" finale in May.
Phillips has revealed he was in crippling pain from a kidney blockage that made it hard to stand at times during parts of the "Idol" season and was undergoing a series of surgeries during breaks in the competition. His right kidney wasn't functioning properly, he said, but it didn't require a transplant.
Phillips hasn't performed since his "Idol" victory. Instead, he's been focused on recovery.

Whether someone is an annual participant or a first-timer, the significance of the National Memorial Day Concert is self-evident.
This year, the event -- which PBS televises again on Sunday, May 27, from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. (check local listings) -- has stars of both kinds. The North Korean National Symphony Orchestra is planning a concert in Atlanta this spring followed by a tour of several other cities, said Robert Springs, the president of Global Resource Services, a humanitarian group that works in North Korea.
He said he hopes the visit will take place in the spring but that the details are still being worked out and the visit is still awaiting government approval. Springs' group has sent three musical groups to North Korea over the last 14 years, including Christian rock group Casting Crowns.
"The hope is that we can better understand the people of North Korea and that they can better understand us," he said. "And that could lead to more normalized relations."

Then one said, "Who's the writer?" and the director said, "She is." This guy just looked at me and went, "You wrote this? Ok..." and nodded. It was beautiful because I felt like he was giving me a lot of respect.

Beside "Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular" which featured Beyonce Knowles and Brad Paisley, there was also another concert held to celebrate the Independence Day of the United States. Taking place at the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the gig saw performances by Jordin Sparks.
Introduced by host Jimmy Smits, the 2007 winner of "American Idol" opened the concert with a stunning rendition of "Star-Spangled Banner". The 21-year-old singer, wearing a little black dress, performed the National Anthem with the music provided by the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of pops conductor Jack Everly.
Later in the evening, Jordin returned to the stage at the PBS' special concert dubbed "A Capitol Fourth" to perform "Beauty and the Beast". While she's performing the theme song of the Disney classic animated movie, "Dancing with the Stars" pros Mark Ballas and Chelsie Hightower were doing the rumba.
