Top Gun was a major banner film in 1986. It catapulted Tom Cruise into the stratosphere of film stardom. Tony Scott became the go-to director for a lot of action films. The film would also make a star out of Maverick’s rival-turned-wingman, Val Kilmer. Also Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson became a huge powerhouse producing team in Hollywood. Paramount had an enormous hit on their hands, but this property didn’t actually become a franchise until 2022, when after careful planning and a treatment of love, they finally gave audiences the follow-up Top Gun: Maverick, which became a massive hit at the box office.
The story of Top Gun dates back to a magazine article from May 1983 from California Magazine. The article was titled Top Guns (which sounds like the title of an upcoming sequel in the franchise), and it was written by the late author Ehud Yonay. Yonay’s family,...

A court has ruled that Paramount Studios didn’t infringe any copyright laws when it made Top Gun: Maverick.
For the past two years, Paramount Studios has been embroiled in a legal case over Top Gun: Maverick. In 2022, the family of late journalist Ehud Yonay filed a lawsuit against the studio, alleging that it had broken copyright laws when it made the highwire action sequel.
In 1983, Paramount bought the rights to Yonay’s article Top Guns, originally published in California magazine. That feature formed the basis for director Tony Scott’s Top Gun, which helped turn Tom Cruise into a superstar in 1986.
Decades later, Paramount finally embarked on a sequel, but didn’t re-acquire the rights to Yonay’s article. Yonay’s family, who owned the rights after the author passed away in 2012, filed their suit in May 2022 – a matter of weeks before Top Gun: Maverick appeared in cinemas.

Paramount has prevailed in the lower courts in a copyright infringement case over Top Gun: Maverick.
In a decision handed down last Friday, April 5, a district judge dismissed the case, brought by the family of Ehud Yonay, a journalist whose 1983 story for California magazine, “Top Guns,” inspired the original 1986 film. At the time, Paramount secured the exclusive movie rights to the story and Yonay received a “based on” credit.

A judge has ruled that “Top Gun: Maverick” did not infringe on an article about Navy fighter pilots that inspired the original 1986 film.
Paramount bought the rights to the article, “Top Guns,” from author Ehud Yonay in May 1983. But the studio did not re-acquire the rights, which had reverted to Yonay’s widow and son, before releasing the sequel in 2022. “Top Gun: Maverick” grossed $1.5 billion at the box office.
The heirs sued, alleging that the sequel infringed on the copyright in Yonay’s original work. But in a ruling on Friday, Judge Percy Anderson found that any similarities are not protected creative expression under copyright law.
“To the extent Plaintiffs contend that the Works are similar because they depict or describe fighter pilots landing on an aircraft carrier, being shot down while flying, and carousing at a bar, those are unprotected facts, familiar stock scenes, or scènes à faire,” the judge wrote.

Paramount has prevailed in a copyright lawsuit, brought by the heirs to the author of a 1983 magazine story that inspired the original Top Gun, accusing the studio of forging ahead with the blockbuster sequel without renegotiating a new license.
U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson, in an order dismissing the case on Friday, found that several elements from the film — including plot, theme, setting and dialogue — are “largely dissimilar” from Ehud Yonay’s article. And to the extent both works revolve around a fighter pilot training school, the court concluded that any overlapping factual similarities aren’t protected by copyright law.
In a statement, copyright termination heavyweight Marc Toberoff, representing the plaintiffs, said the court’s ruling dismissing the lawsuit on summary judgment will be appealed. He added, “Once Yonay’s widow and son exercised their rights under the Copyright Act to reclaim his exhilarating Story, Paramount hand-waved them away exclaiming ‘What copyright?...

The nearly two-year old dogfight between Paramount and the family of the writer of the 1983 article that inspired the franchise is over, at least for now.
In an order released late on April 5, U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson grounded the copyright infringement, breach of contract, and declaratory relief action by the Israeli-based widow and son of Ehud Yonay
“Defendant is entitled to summary judgment on plaintiffs Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay’s claims for breach of contract, declaratory relief, and copyright infringement,” he wrote in a the one-page judgment in favor of Paramount Pictures (read it here). “Plaintiffs shall take nothing and Defendant shall have its costs of suit.”
“Plaintiffs contend that the Article and Sequel are substantially similar because they have similar plots, sequences of events, pacing, themes, moods, dialogue, characters, and settings,” the judge said in a separate 14-page minutes in chambers...

A decade ago, director David Bruckner made a valiant attempt to get a new Friday the 13th film into production… it just didn’t happen. Years later, he did manage to reboot the Hellraiser franchise, with his version of Hellraiser getting released through the Hulu streaming service back in October of 2022. Surprisingly, a year and a half has gone by since that release and we haven’t heard anything about the possibility of a follow-up – until now. During a chat with ComicBook.com, producer Keith Levine confirmed that they are having conversations about making a Hellraiser sequel.
Levine said, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design,...

A legal fight is brewing over the upcoming Road House remake, with the original film’s screenwriter suing Amazon Studios.
R. Lance Hill, in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in California federal court, accuses MGM Studios and its parent, Amazon, of copyright infringement for refusing to license his 1986 screenplay after he allegedly clawed back the rights to his work. He seeks a court order blocking the release of the movie.
According to the complaint, Amazon instituted a self-imposed deadline to complete the remake. To meet this deadline, which was threatened by the actors strike, the suit claims Amazon resorted to using generative artificial intelligence to replicate the voices of the movie’s actors in violation of the collective bargaining agreements of SAG-AFTRA and the Director’s Guild of America.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said the lawsuit is “completely without merit” and that “numerous allegations are categorically false.

A couple years ago, Marvel received copyright termination notices from comic book artist / writer Larry Lieber and the estates of fellow artists / writers Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and Don Rico that would have caused them to lose the sole copyrights to such characters as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and others, as well as titles like Amazing Fantasy, The Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Man, Journey Into Mystery, Marvel Super-Heroes, Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, and Tomb of Dracula. As reported in 2021, Marvel filed a series of lawsuits in response to those copyright termination notices. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that all of those lawsuits have been settled.
The termination notices targeted not just specific artwork and stories, but also “any character, story element, or indicia reasonably associated with the Works.” As The Hollywood Reporter explains,...

Updated, 8:15 Am: Amid all the turmoil in the MCU of late, Disney now has one less battle to fight.
After more than two years, Disney and subsidiary Marvel have reached a settlement with the estate of acclaimed comic book artist Steve Ditko. Lawyers for the Mouse House and the Ditko estate filed court papers on December 6 that effectively ended the pricey dispute. A final affirmation of the settlement is expected in the coming weeks.
Represented by pugilistic copyright attorney Marc Toberoff, the Ditko estate in 2021 had sought termination notices on the rights to such luminaries as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Iron Man. Other artists’ families and heirs also challenged the rights to characters created by their family members. Those disputes were resolved earlier this year.
As in previous settlements and resolutions that Disney/Marvel have reached with the likes of the Jack Kirby estate and others, the settlement with the Ditko estate is confidential.

It looks like Marvel won’t be bringing its battle over the rights to Spider-Man and Doctor Strange into the new year. Attorneys for the company and the estate of Steve Ditko on Wednesday notified the court that they’ve reached an amicable settlement and expect a stipulation of dismissal with prejudice to be filed in the coming weeks.
This all started back in 2021, when Marvel filed a series of lawsuits in response to copyright termination notices from Larry Lieber and the estates of Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and Don Rico. A very long list of characters were at issue, including Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk and Thor. In June, all but one of the matters settled.
The last remaining dispute was with the heirs of Ditko, who co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. According to that termination notice, the estate wanted to reclaim rights from comics...

Dust Bunny: David Dastmalchian joins Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver in Bryan Fuller horror film
Actor David Dastmalchian has an impressive list of credits that includes Late Night With the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Oppenheimer, The Boogeyman, Dune, The Suicide Squad, the Ant-Man films, Blade Runner 2049, The Belko Experiment, Prisoners, and The Dark Knight, among many others. Now Collider reports that Dastmalchian has joined the cast of Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s family-oriented horror project Dust Bunny.
This project was announced last November, not long before we learned that Fuller is also working on a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake for franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Dust Bunny went into production earlier this year, with Hannibal himself Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver (Alien) in lead roles.

Exclusive: Hulu is not proceeding with its planned limited series about Sammy Davis Jr., starring Elijah Kelley as the Candy Man, from Lee Daniels and 20th Television.
I hear 20th Television will be shopping the project to other buyers and plans to attach additional high-level talent before taking it out as part of an aggressive effort to find a new home.
The studio recently was able to set another streaming series, The Spiderwick Chronicles (co-production with lead studio Paramount TV Studios), at Roku, following Disney+’s decision not to move forward with it.
The pickup reversals for both shows come amid a content spend cut across all divisions of Hulu and Disney+ parent Disney, which the company announced earlier this year. Additionally, all media companies have been reevaluating their streaming strategies by cutting programming costs with a renewed focus on profitability.
Hulu ordered the long-gestating Sammy Davis Jr. limited series in April 2022. In February,...

Paramount and the heirs to the author of a 1983 magazine story that the original Top Gun was based on are each moving for a federal judge to declare victory in their favor in a copyright lawsuit revolving around the blockbuster sequel.
In a summary judgment motion filed on Monday, the two sides trade arguments over the copyrightability of certain aspects of Ehud Yonay’s article and Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski’s inspirations for some parts of the movie alleged to infringe on the writer’s intellectual property.
As evidence that filmmakers copied parts of his article, Yonay’s heirs, Shosh and Yuval, point to scenes and plot devices in the sequel that were detailed in the story but did not appear in the original. At the top list is a scene at a Navy base bar in which Tom Cruise’s Maverick has to buy a round of...

Last November, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service. The lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show – but now that the strike is over, Crystal Lake is probably getting back on track, and since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!

The film set for Beetlejuice 2 in Vermont was burglarized and authorities are still looking for the culprit.
Vermont State Police shared a post on X with photos of the sculpture piece that was stolen from the set of the movie in East Corinth.
“We tried saying the name of this stolen statue three times, but it didn’t come back!” Vermont State Police joked in a post shared on July 21.
The X post continued, “We’re investigating the theft of this 150-pound sculpture from the Beetlejuice 2 set in E. Corinth, along with a lamppost topped with a pumpkin decoration.”
Police asked the public to call them with any information regarding the burglary.

A Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Unfortunately, any progress the show was making has been put on hold during the writers strike – but earlier this year, Fuller assembled a writers room that spent six weeks brainstorming ideas and breaking down the scripts that will make up the first season of the series. Two of the writers in that room were author Tananarive Due, who has written multiple novels over the last thirty years and executive produced Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and her husband Steven Barnes, who is also an author and has also contributed scripts to shows like Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone. Marvel has made a major move toward ending the battle for the rights to its most iconic characters — including the Avengers — but the fight isn’t over.
Back in 2021, Marvel filed a series of lawsuits in response to copyright termination notices from Larry Lieber and the estates of Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and Don Rico.
U.S. Copyright Law gives authors or their heirs the ability to essentially claw back copyrights after a certain period of time. It doesn’t cover works made for hire, which has been Marvel’s primary argument in these matters.
At issue are the rights to titles including Amazing Fantasy, The Avengers, Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Man, Journey Into Mystery, Marvel Super-Heroes, Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense and Tomb of Dracula.
In addition to the specific art and stories in the comics, the termination notices also targeted “any character, story element,...

That isn’t stopping King from returning to the franchise more than forty years later, though! It was recently announced that a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service – and a couple months ago, Fuller revealed that King will have a “recurring role” on the show. Today, King took to social media to share a picture of her with Fuller… and in the caption, she mentioned that Crystal Lake is “coming 2024“.

When the copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came to an end, Miller was awarded with the U.S. copyright to the first film. Miller went on to team up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, A24, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, and Friday the 13th franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian – the last surviving investor in the original film – to start developing the “expanded prequel” / “pre-remake-quel” TV series Crystal Lake for the Peacock streaming service. Thanks to the involvement of both Miller and Barsamian, that series can use all elements from the entire Friday the 13th franchise. But Cunningham isn’t just walking away from the Friday the 13th business. Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting have learned that Cunningham is overseeing reboots of Friday the 13th and the 1985 horror comedy House (which he produced), while also producing an original film called The Night Driver!

Everyone remembers the sensation of fear coursing through their veins the first time they ever heard the ominous whispering of "Ki ki ki, ma ma ma" in "Friday the 13th." The terrifying slasher from Victor Miller and Sean S. Cunningham spawned a massively popular franchise and inspired countless rip-offs, but few films can hold a candle to the unbridled terror found within the trees and cabins of Camp Crystal Lake. Now, horror maven Bryan Fuller is taking us back to camp with the upcoming A24 prequel series, "Crystal Lake."
The "Friday the 13th" franchise is comprised of 12 films, three seasons of a television series, novels, comic books, video games, and plenty of tie-in merchandise. While prequel stories have been told in the novels and comics, "Crystal Lake" will be the first time we see the story of what came before Jason Voorhees' untimely death during summer camp on screen — fully fleshed out.

After 14 years, the Friday the 13th franchise is finally getting set to return to the screen with “Crystal Lake,” an upcoming prequel series from A24, Peacock and Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) that’s miraculously able to use any and all existing elements from the franchise.
Peacock has given the project a straight-to-series order, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise.
Variety had detailed, “The show will be written by Bryan Fuller, who is also the showrunner and an executive producer. Victor Miller, who penned the original film in the franchise, will also executive produce along with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and A24.”
At a Friday the 13th Part III screening last night, Fuller provided an exciting update on the project, announcing that Kevin Williamson will be writing an episode!
Additionally, original Friday final girl Adrienne King will have a recurring role!
