“No sovereign, no court,” sighed Henry James when lamenting America’s cultural poverty, “no church, no clergy”. To make up for those deficiencies, his compatriots invented the movies, manufacturing a pantheon of virile gods and nubile goddesses who outshone the chinless toffs admired by James. The sacred totem of this new religion was modelled on the chivalry that America officially rejected: the Academy Award takes the form of a sword-bearing crusader, proudly erect on a pedestal representing a reel of film. But the figure’s knightly pretence was immediately undercut by a fond, familiar nickname: when an Academy employee saw the first gold-plated statuette in 1931, she said it resembled her Uncle Oscar.

Ruining the Freudian allure of living fast and dying young by only really caring about the second part, Life is more successful as a reminder to prep your will than it is as a character study. This slice of biopic life finds actor James Dean as he stands on the precipice of stardom, and therefore, his untimely death. Director Anton Corbijn’s sleepy deconstruction of a Golden Age icon proves all too effective at exposing the duller details of Hollywood’s affair with Dean, before he became an industry legend and early martyr of American youth culture.
Patient pacing, the masks separating private and public appearance, the worth of an individual man: all interests of Life that also made Corbijn’s previous film, A Most Wanted Man, a thoughtful exercise in screw-tightening espionage. But the gulf of engagement one feels between modern terror politics and Silent Generation celebrity is wide...

A smart, wistful exploration of art, ambition, and celebrity, with appealingly melancholic performances by Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan. I’m “biast” (pro): really like Pattinson and DeHaan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Today is the 60th anniversary of the death of James Dean. Whether you’re a fan of Dean’s or not (I am not, particularly, though it would have been nice to see where he would have gone), there’s no question that he is one of the key figures that helped create the myth of the movie star as icon, partly by dying way too young and just as his talent was beginning to blaze across the screen. His legend received an assist via a propitiously timed photo essay in Life magazine in 1955 — which appeared just months before Dean’s death but probably would have...

Trying to add an extra dose of "cool" to his Saturday (March 22), Justin Bieber posted a sepia-tone selfie, comparing himself to Hollywood legend James Dean.
Posing in Dean's iconic cigarette and sunglasses position, the Biebs wrote, "This is James Dean inspired. Don’t ask me if I smoke ciggys cuz I don’t."
James Dean, born on February 8th, 1931, became one of the world's most famous pop culture icons of the 1950s, and was best known for his role as a rebellious teen in "Rebel Without a Cause."
Dean's career was cut short by a fatal car crash on September 30th, 1955, but his memory still lives, even as Robert Pattinson films his new movie, "Life," characterizing the friendship between Dean and Life photographer Dennis Stock.

Dane DeHaan is among the five nominees for the Ee Rising Star Award at this year's BAFTAs, alongside George MacKay, Lupita Nyong'o, Will Poulter and Léa Seydoux.
Since his breakout role as adopted teenager Jesse on HBO's In Treatment, DeHaan has rapidly established himself as one of Hollywood's most mesmerising young actors. While he's known for playing troubled young men – including Chronicle's doomed Andrew Detmer, Ryan Gosling's conflicted son in The Place Beyond the Pines, and most recently the charismatic but unstable Lucien Carr in Kill Your Darlings – he's the opposite of predictable on screen, bringing a nuanced sense of psychology to every new character.
He'll next be seen as Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and he's recently signed on to play James Dean opposite Robert Pattinson in Anton Corbijn's drama Life.

‘Queen of the Desert’ news: Naomi Watts out, Nicole Kidman maybe in, Robert Pattinson maybe still in — or maybe not (photo: Nicole Kidman in ‘The Railway Man’) In an Q&A with The Butler producer Cassian Elwes, published on September 6, 2013, The Hollywood Reporter indicated that Elwes’ movie project Queen of the Desert, a biopic of multitasker (political officer, writer, explorer, spy, etc.) Gertrude Bell to be directed by Werner Herzog, has lost its two leads: Naomi Watts, who was initially cast in the title role, and Robert Pattinson, who was to play T.E. Lawrence aka "Lawrence of Arabia" — brought to movie life by Peter O’Toole in David Lean’s 1962 multiple Oscar-winning blockbuster of the same name. Yesterday, news came down from the Toronto International Film Festival that director Anton Corbijn had found his two lead actors for "Life," a retelling of the friendship between James Dean and the photographer that snapped some of the actor's most famous portraits in Times Square, Dennis Stock.
Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson will play Dean and Stock, respectively, and while the pairing should have anyone who is interested in the young actors' blossoming careers excited, the idea of a big screen retelling of the story behind the famous photos is reason enough to look forward to "Life."
Stock got his start it Life magainze as an apprentice in 1947 and won a contest for young photographers there in 1951, the same year that Dean got his start in television. The young actor wouldn't break out until four year later, in 1955 when Elia Kazan's adaptation of "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck.

Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson are rebels with a cause: namely, the upcoming film "Life," about the friendship between James Dean and Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DeHaan will star as Dean, and Pattinson will play Stock, the young photographer who shot now-iconic images of a pre-"East of Eden" Dean as they traveled across the country.
DeHaan's upcoming films include the Beat Generation indie "Kill Your Darlings," the true-crime thriller "Devil's Knot," and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Still busy in the afterglow of his "Twilight" superstardom, Pattinson just wrapped filming on David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars."
From director Anton Corbijn ("The American"), "Life" is expected to shoot in early 2014.

Twilight actor will play photographer who helped Dean find fame, alongside rising star Dane DeHaan
Robert Pattinson is set to appear in Anton Corbijn's forthcoming James Dean biopic, Life, though not as the tragic 50s star.
The prospect of the Twilight heartthrob taking to the big screen as the most notable male sex symbol of his era might have been guaranteed to set teenage hearts aflutter. But Pattinson has signed on to play Dean's sometime travelling companion, the photographer Dennis Stock, instead. The film star will be portrayed by Chronicle actor Dane DeHaan, who is currently Hollywood hot property after signing up for the next Amazing Spider-Man movie.
Corbijn's film will see the Dutch director taking on another iconic figure who died long before his time, following on from Control, his critically acclaimed 2007 film about the last years of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. The James Dean biopic, titled...

Yet another movie about legendary film actor James Dean is in the works, and this one is set to star Robert Pattinson. But get this--the smoldering “Twilight” heartthrob isn’t playing Dean. He’s co-starring as one of his friends instead.
Dane DeHaan will star as Dean and Pattinson will play a photographer named Dennis Stock. The movie depicts the two men’s real-life friendship. They became acquainted when Stock was assigned to photograph Dean during a cross-country trip.
In fact, Stock was the photographer who took the iconic picture of the “Giant” and “Rebel Without A Cause” star walking through New York’s Times Square in a long overcoat, with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
The movie is called “Life” and it’s set to begin production in early 2014.

Control director to explore real-life friendship between 50s icon and Life magazine photographer in new film
Control director Anton Corbijn is to delve into pop culture history once again for a film about the real-life friendship between James Dean and Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock.
The biopic, titled Life, will follow the recent trend for movies that touch on a vital period in their subject's life, eschewing the once-popular "cradle to grave" format. Dean's 1955 breakthrough, the melodrama East of Eden, had not yet been released when Stock received an assignment from the Magnum agency to photograph the young actor. The pair ended up becoming friends during a journey from New York to La, and on to Indiana, with the photographer capturing iconic images of the nascent star.

Pre-production on the picture will begin in early 2014.

Life, an upcoming biopic about James Dean‘s friendship with Life photographer Dennis Stock, is set to be directed by Dutch filmmaker Anton Corbijn. The project will chronicle the Dean and Stock’s unlikely connection, their cross-country road trip, and Stock’s career beginnings in photographing the young star.
Perhaps it will also answer a question I sometimes think about: Why the hell do people care so much about James Dean?
East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant are, no doubt, film classics. Dean earned posthumous Oscar nominations for Eden and Giant, and he was certainly a great-looking 24-year-old whose urgent acting style was new and influential, like Marlon Brando‘s. But it’s bizarre that James Dean’s star still seems to outshine other matinee idols of the time like James Stewart, Gene Kelly, William Holden, or even Brando because James Dean died before he became excellent.

So remember that brief moment when it seemed like Anton Corbijn was going to walk away from making movies after his upcoming thriller "A Most Wanted Man?" Yeah, scratch that. While we wait for that picture, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Rachel McAdams, to drop, Corbijn is already moving on to this next venture and it's a return to the biopic format of his directorial debut "Control." The Wrap reveals that Corbijn will helm the title-that-will-hopefully-be-changed "Life." Penned by Luke Davies ("Candy"), the movie will chronicle the relationship between movie star James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock. The latter first discovered Dean just before he came a massive star thanks to "East Of Eden," and travelled the country with him taking pictures for Life magazine that would come to define the icon (hence the title, but why not call the movie "Dean"?) Sounds like a fascinating story, and we're always...
