Elvis Costello, Sting and Billy Joel are among the stars lending their support to a campaign to save the fabled New York City jazz venue Birdland. The effort includes a virtual concert — which Costello will partake in — airing January 24th at 7 p.m. Et.
Like so many venues across the country, Birdland was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced it to shut its doors. Despite the passage of the Save Our Stages Act in last year’s Covid-19 relief bill, which will provide targeted aid to the live entertainment industry,...

If Saturday Night Live can do it, why not Off Broadway? That’s one of the arguments in a lawsuit filed by six small New York theaters and two comedy clubs against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio over the city’s ongoing pandemic shutdown of such venues.
The lawsuit filed in United States District Court for the Southern District of New York by lead plaintiffs Catherine Russell, the owner of the The Theater Center in Times Square, and Michael Sgouros of Greenwich Village’s The Players Theater, challenges the Covid-19 shutdown, arguing that small venues could open safely at limited capactiy. The lead plaintiffs were joined in the suit by owners of The Actors Temple Theater, Soho Playhouse, Gene Frankel Theater and The Triad, as well as the Broadway Comedy Club and New York Comedy Club.

It’s been almost a year to the day since we lost David Bowie, but the rock icon and beloved creative force is still foremost in the minds of those who knew and loved him best. As Billboard reports, on Sunday evening, some of those people — including fans, friends and even former bandmates — gathered together to celebrate what would have been Bowie’s seventieth birthday for a three-hour charity concert at London’s Brixton Academy. It was an appropriately rocking and raucous event.
The show was hosted by actor (and close Bowie pal) Gary Oldman, who took the stage not only to emcee the event, but to rock out to a few of Bowie’s classics, including “Sorrow” and “The Man Who Sold the World.”

She died peacefully at her home after an extended illness, her brother Timothy Seldes said. "It is with deep sadness that I share the news that my dear sister Marian Seldes has died," he said in a statement. I have already discussed seven new releases and one compilation in my article on the Jazz Artist of the Year, Matthew Shipp. Here are my other favorite new albums from the jazz world in 2013. Most surprising for me is the number of vocal albums, because I'm very particular about jazz singers and dislike most of them. So coming from me, the praise for the jazz singers listed here is really saying something.
1. Andy Bey: The World According to Andy Bey (High Note)
Andy Bey is my favorite living jazz singer, and he's not recorded nearly as often as his talents deserve. Now 74 years old, he has only recorded 11 albums in the course of a 50-year career (one a concert album I've never actually seen). In comparison, Kurt Elling, 46 and active for 18 years, has already made 10. It had been six years since Bey's previous album, and he's been living HIV-positive since 1994, so I was worried.

Toshiro Mifune is on the lookout for action and adventure in The Hidden Fortress.
The 1958 action-filled The Hidden Fortress is a grand-scale adventure as only Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai) could make one.
The Hidden Fortress stars the inimitable Toshiro Mifune (Throne of Blood) as a general charged with guarding his defeated clan’s princess (a fierce Misa Uehara) as the two smuggle royal treasure across hostile territory. Accompanying them are a pair of bumbling, conniving peasants who may or may not be their friends.
This rip-roaring ride is among the director’s most beloved films and was a primary influence on George Lucas’s Star Wars.
The Hidden Fortress delivers Kurosawa’s trademark deft blend of wry humor, breathtaking action, and compassionate humanity.

Catherine Russell almost takes in stride that on April 18 she will have starred in Warren Manzi's "Perfect Crime" since its first performance 25 years ago. In all that time, she has never taken a sick or vacation day "Though I did take four days off for my brother's and sister's weddings," she admits frankly. For this achievement, Russell has been inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records."A long run is not for everyone," she asserts. "A lot of people get bored with it. But I like stability and I chose a field where there is not a lot of stability. Instinctively, I figured out a way to have it."Now the longest running play in New York City theater history—and housed at the Snapple Theater Center on W. 50th Street, "Perfect Crime"—is a whodunit thriller about Harvard educated psychiatrist Margaret Brent (Russell) who is suspected of killing her British.

Through a lifetime of roles such as Julian Marsh in "42nd Street", Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls," and, of course, Detective Lennie Briscoe on "Law and Order," Jerry Orbach garnered fame, fortune and the love of an entire city. But perhaps his most valued role was that of husband to his wife, Elaine.Monday night, friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate the love story of Jerry and Elaine Orbach. Famed friends took the stage in New York at the Snapple Theater Center's Jerry Orbach Theater to share memories of Jerry and Elaine, and present excerpts from "Remember How I Love You," a posthumously published memoir of the late couple's romance. Recently released this month, copies of the book were sold to benefit The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration and Bideawee, an animal welfare organization. Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard Hawks’ El Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets.
