After six months of strike-related stoppages, global production is set to resume in a massive way, as producers, execs and day-to-day facilitators anticipate an early 2024 surge in production that could very well last throughout the calendar year. Only (and tellingly) — despite such evident and abundant relief — all of those facilitators are also quite measured in their optimism.
“I keep telling [my members] not to expect that same post-covid insanity,” says Location Managers Guild International president John Rakich. “I don’t think we’re going to see that insane [post-lockdown stretch] of two years straight of just back to back work. That might be the case for a few months [as we deal with the bottleneck of productions ready to shoot] but ultimately this business is cyclical, and I want our members to plan accordingly.”
Given that cyclical nature, and given a foreseen contraction in full-season streaming commissions, Rakich anticipates an eventual return to a more seasonal production cycle buoyed by more features than in previous years,...

The Television Academy said Tuesday that it has updated eligibility requirements for its Producers Peer Group, moves that includes adding a Location Managers Subgroup. It means that for the first time, qualifying location managers and assistant location managers will be eligible for either active or associate membership.
The Producers Peer Group tweaks also include redefining eligibility requirements “to align with the industry’s more contemporary production titles and credits,” the Academy said. As a result, executives in charge of production, segment producers, field producers and transmedia producers are now eligible for active voting membership.
“Location managers play an integral role in the production, the look, logistics and on-set oversight of producing a television show; and they are a welcome addition to the Producers Peer Group,” Producers governor Tony Carey said in a release revealing the changes.

The new James Bond film “No Time to Die” will open in Australia on Nov. 11 due to “changes specific to the Australian marketplace impacted by Covid,” according to MGM.
Most patrons would not have been able to see the Daniel Craig film in theaters, since more than 60% of the Australian marketplace is currently in a state of lockdown, which the government mandated will remain in place until 70% of the population is vaccinated. Businesses will be allowed to function normally after the country reaches an 80% vaccination rate, which is estimated to be in mid-November.
“No Time to Die” was originally set to open in Australia as well as in the U.K. on Sept. 30, a week ahead of the U.S. release date which is still set for Oct. 8.

Founded in 2003, Lmgi is a global organization of location professionals in the motion picture, television, commercial and print production industries. It is not a union, however. Teamsters Local 399 represents location managers at the bargaining table.

Two major 2018 releases – actioner “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and critics’ darling “Roma” – were honored for film location work by the Location Managers Guild International at a ceremony this evening at the Eli & Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
The 6th Annual Lmgi Awards also recognized “Chernobyl” and “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” in the television category.
The Lmgi Awards spotlight “productions in which the creative use of filming locations sets the tone, enriches the character and enhances the narrative,” per the organization.
Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” filmed at locations in France, the U.K., Abu Dhabi, Norway and New Zealand. Netflix’s “Roma” was shot in and around Mexico City. HBO’s “Chernobyl” derived its authentic look from locations in Lithuania, not far from Ukraine, where the nuclear disaster itself took place. And Amazon’s “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” traveled to Montreal, Morocco, France and Washington D.C.
