The theme of the 2024 Met Gala was “The Garden of Time” — based on a story by J.G. Ballard – but, really, the theme of all Met Galas always has been: Go big or stay home!
While there have been myriad gorgeous gowns, jewels and natty tuxes over many Met Gala years, what do the most dress-obsessed actually remember? Cher half-naked. Lady Gaga’s change of dress performance art. Billy Porter’s royal entrance in Egyptian armor and entourage. Katy Perry as a chandelier. They all proved: It doesn’t pay to stay staid — even if staid means gorgeous.
So the question comes down to: Does one do good outrageous? Or outrageously bad? Both the bad and the beautiful always get the most ink — sometimes, you can’t tell the difference. With such risky looks, it’s a toss of the coin. If you’re Cher, you can pull off anything. Everyone...

The demise of disco was greatly accelerated by the cultural impact of the infamous Disco Demolition Night of 1979 in Chicago’s Comiskey Park. While rockers have used the word in a pejorative sense for years, DJs, artists, impresarios, and aficionados know that disco—both the genre and the subculture—not only has deep roots but has lived on under various aliases, inspiring the evolution of music and keeping people moving in various funky ways. Le freak, c’est toujours chic!
These are the ideas, plot points and storylines that Toronto filmmakers Omar Majeed (“Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam”) and Peter Mishara explore in their documentary feature “Disco’s Revenge,” which had its world premiere Thursday in Hot Docs’ Pop/Life strand.
The film, which screens again Friday, is set for release this year. Elevation Pictures will distribute it in Canada; Republic Pictures has acquired rights outside of Canada.

José Andrés is a renowned name globally, as well as locally in Washington’s Dmv (District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia) area. Ambassadors, civil servants, businessmen, tourists, locals and celebrities — including Rob Reiner, Paris Hilton, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, LL Cool J, Billy Porter, bandleader Chucho Valdés, NBA pro Kyle Kuzma and NFL player Kevin Zeitler — have all dined at his restaurants in DC, of which there are 8 and all are within a walking distance of each other.
One of his most famous concepts is The Bazaar By José Andrés, which has locations in Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York and Washington. The latter sits inside the Waldorf Astoria Washington hotel — which opened in 2022 — and it’s a perfect match, as the chef and hotel management share the same ethos and values for diversity and inclusion.
Andrés originally was supposed to open his restaurant in what was then the Trump International Hotel.

The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar will star in Gurinder Chadha’s next film, Christmas Karma. It’s due out this December.
News has emerged about Gurinder Chadha’s next project, confirmed to be an adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
Titled Christmas Karma, the film will star Kunal Nayyar as Scrooge. He’ll be joined by an ensemble cast that includes Eva Longoria, Boy George, Billy Porter, Hugh Bonneville, Leo Suter, Charithra Chandran, Pixie Lott, Danny Dyer, Bilal Hasna, Allan Corduner, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Rufus Jones, Eve, and Nitin Ganatra.
We can’t say we expected to see Danny Dyer, Boy George and Billy Porter in the same film, but there we are. We also reported earlier this year that the film’s Scrooge would be an “Indian Tory who hates refugees”.
Christmas Karma will also be a Bollywood-style musical; Gary Barlow is in charge of music alongside Shaznay Lewis and Nitin Sawhney.

Two men have been indicted for distributing the heroin and fentanyl that caused the February death of Pose star and transgender activist Cecilia Gentili.
The four-count indictment accuses Michael Kuilan, 44, of Brooklyn and Antonio Venti, 52, of West Babylon, New York, with supplying the drugs that killed Gentili on February 6. The indictments were announced today by New York federal prosecutors.
The announcement by law enforcement officials today was the first time Gentili’s cause of death was disclosed.
“Cecilia Gentili, a prominent activist and leader of the New York transgender community was tragically poisoned in her Brooklyn home from fentanyl-laced heroin,” said Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, in the statement. “Today, the alleged perpetrators who sold the deadly dose of drugs to Gentili have been arrested. Selena Gomez has seen her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars and guest stars get nominated for and win Emmys the past two years while she sat on the sidelines. Will the third time finally be the charm? She’s currently in fifth place in the Best Comedy Actress odds. Given her previous snubs, you’d be justified to doubt her chances, but we’ve been through this before with a twice snubbed actress-singer who pulled through on her third try under very similar circumstances: Mandy Moore.
“This Is Us” was a breakout hit when it premiered in 2016 on NBC. In 2017, it earned 10 Emmy nominations for its freshman installment, including Best Drama Series and seven acting bids — but not for Moore in Best Drama Actress. It won two awards: Best Drama Actor for Sterling K. Brown, who prevailed over his TV dad Milo Ventimiglia, a surprise nominee, and Best Drama Guest Actor for Gerald McRaney,...

This impeccably performed, engaging take on Kramer vs Kramer delivers a subtly shaded portrait of current gay lifestyles
This poignant drama is practically a remake of Kramer vs Kramer from 1979 – though this time with two divorcing New York-based dads fighting for custody of their kid instead of K2’s traditional pairing of a husband and wife. And like the older Dustin Hoffman-Meryl Streep vehicle, Our Son is a bit soapy and middlebrow, but impeccably performed all-round, led by a trio of terrific turns from Luke Evans and Billy Porter as the two fathers, with winning, winsome support from Christopher Woodley as Owen, their eight-year-old son.
The script, co-written by Peter Nickowitz and director Bill Oliver, delivers an acute, subtly shaded group portrait of current gay lifestyles, from married-with-children types like Nicky (Evans) and Gabriel (Porter), who are monogamous until Gabriel strays without pre-agreement into another’s man’s arms,...

The Pose star plays a divorcing dad in Our Son, but he has other things on his mind – such as getting paid, why his James Baldwin biopic is like Barbie and trying to understand the Israel-Gaza conflict
Billy Porter is known for going big. The 54-year-old actor and singer routinely stole scenes as the drag ball emcee Pray Tell in FX’s drama Pose, a role that won him an Emmy. In Amazon’s 2021 update of Cinderella, he turned the fairy godmother into a fabulous, tough-talking fairy “godmuvva”, as he puts it. But his latest role, in the Bill Oliver-directed relationship drama Our Son, takes a different tack: as Gabriel, a relatively meek stay-at-home dad divorcing his husband, Nicky, (Luke Evans), Porter is required to play small, wounded and, sometimes, bitter, without any of the glitz or glam of his best known characters.

Most times, the Oscars broadcast goes off without a hitch. But other times, things happen that leave people talking about it for years — or even decades — to come. While surprises have been happening since before the Oscars were even broadcast — much less before the boom of social media — The Hollywood Reporter takes a look at the biggest viral moments from the last 10 years. Hollywood won’t forget about the streaker or Jennifer Lawrence tripping up the stairs, but those moments happened before 2014.

With more than 70 schools offering costume design instruction, what makes such a program stand out? Is it the proximity to film studios and theaters in the major entertainment hubs of L.A., London and New York? The variety of courses, from historical design to 3D fabric printing, or simply a well-rounded curriculum? Or is it the chance to network with award-winning alums and industry insiders, coupled with portfolio development and postgrad job placement?

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

Ariana DeBose, Boy George and Nile Rodgers have teamed up for “Electric Energy,” the disco-infused bop featured in Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle.”
Rodgers, who produced the track which plays over the film’s end credits, says he got a call from Vaughn asking if he wanted to be involved. Speaking with Variety over Zoom, the musician said although Vaughn sent him a demo track he still asked to see the film. “I have to see the film and have real context because I didn’t want to play blindly.” After seeing the film, his response was, “I was so overly sold. It was fun. I’m totally down.”
DeBose shot the film during the pandemic. “Before the big change,” she says referring to her 2022 awards season sweep as best supporting actress for her role in “West Side Story.” “We made the movie, and I had a wonderful time, and then I won the Oscar.

“I have nothing prepared, man. What should I do?”
The Eric Andre Show is one of Adult Swim’s few remaining legacy programs and its only live-action series currently in production. The nightmare sketch and variety show has been around for over a decade and has featured a wide range of guests that includes Seth Rogen, Dermot Mulroney, Jon Hamm, and Ryan Phillipe.
Andre’s initial plan was to end the series after its fifth season, but he continues to return for more chaos and the show’s most recent year has contained some of the series’ best and most unhinged material. Filmed at New York City’s Terminal 5, Eric Andre Live Near Broadway is an “extra” installment that translates Andre’s exaggerated style of comedy to a live audience setting. The special has its share of laughs and trademark Eric Andre Show insanity, but it lacks the signature ranch...

Beyoncé’s name is also in the mix, thanks to special recognition for her concert documentary, Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce from AMC Theatres. Yes, 2023 was a great year for cinema were far scarier than any nights we would spend at Freddy’s. Not even the likes of Vin Diesel driving cars through explosions (again) or Jason Statham punching prehistoric sharks (again) could’ve prepared us for the likes of The Flash shaking our faith in superhero cinema or The Exorcist: Believer shaking our very faith in God… and by God, I mean David Gordon Green’s ability to handle horror. And need I say any more about my previous episode on EXPEND4BLES, the dumbest movie title since FAN4STIC and the dumbest Stallone sequel since Rocky V? But thank God for the likes of Nolan and Scorsese for renewing our faith in the cinematic experience, just as Winnie-the-pooh: Blood And Honey getting a theatrical release was about to have us swearing off the movie gods. And thanks to all you amazing readers...
