The “made for television movie” began in the 1960s. In fact, one of the most famous TV movies Don Siegel’s 1964 version of “The Killers” featuring Ronald Reagan in his last film role as a ruthless villain, ended up being released theatrically because it was considered too violent for television.
But the genre came of age in the 1970s.
Some of these movies that aired on the three broadcast networks were sheer shlock and others were pilots for prospective TV series. But it was also an embarrassment of riches. Who could forget the beloved 1971 ABC biopic “Brian’s Song,” starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams, which was nominated for 11 Emmys and won five including outstanding single program (drama or comedy). Not only is the 25th James Bond film “No Time to Die” the last 007 adventure thriller starring Daniel Craig, it’s also the first one directed by an American: Cary Joji Fukunaga. The 44-year-old filmmaker won the Sundance dramatic directing award in 2009 for “Sin Nombre,” was the first Asian-American director to win an Emmy for directing in 2014 for “True Detective” and earned a Peabody in 2015 for “Beasts of No Nation.”

Cinema Retro has featured articles and reviews of several titles in the “American Film Theatre” series.
To recap: Back in 1973, producer Ely Landau and his wife Edie launched a daring and unprecedented cinema series that played in the U.S. for two “seasons,” with a total of fourteen titles (but only thirteen were shown), all renowned works—classic and modern—originally produced on the stage. It was called the American Film Theatre. (A review of a DVD box set of the entire series appeared on Cinema Retro. Click here to read.)
The concept tried something different. The directive was to take a great stage play, not change a word, and in most cases, use the actual play script as the screenplay. The next step was to hire an accomplished film director to interpret the text for the film medium but stay faithful to the play.

Accident (1967) centres on Stephen (Dirk Bogarde), an Oxford don who from the outside, appears happily married to Rosalind (Vivien Merchant). Unlike some directors who give up on a bad script or else send it up, one senses that you always try to play fair; but in some of those early British films, one also sense a kind of irony behind their worst excesses. Is this so?

Late playwright Harold Pinter left a huge chunk of his fortune to his estranged son, even though the pair had not spoken for 15 years before his death.
The legendary writer passed away on 24 December 2008 following a battle with cancer.
Now the star's will has revealed he set aside a country cottage in Cambridgeshire, England and a lump sum of $480,000 (£300,000) for his 51-year-old son Daniel.
Pinter fell out with Daniel, his only child, after divorcing Vivien Merchant in 1977 following an affair with Lady Antonia Fraser, who later become Pinter's second wife.
The pair never reconciled and had not spoken in 15 years prior to his death, according to Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper.
Pinter left the bulk of his fortune to Fraser, making provisions for her six children as well as marking out a substantial donation to his local cricket team.
