More than a year after the death of David Crosby, the music he made with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash will be saluted in a tribute concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall this spring.
Set for May 13, the show — simply titled “The Music of Crosby, Stills and Nash” — will present interpretations of both group and solo songs by an eclectic lineup, including genre-fluid singer Yola; classic rock visionary Todd Rundgren; singer-songwriters Shawn Colvin, Rickie Lee Jones, and Aoife O’Donovan; indie rockers Iron & Wine and Real Estate; and jam-rock vanguard Grace Potter.

Wild Pink are back with a new single, “Air Drumming Fix You.”
“Air Drumming Fix You” is Wild Pink’s first offering since 2022’s Ilysm, and their first since recently signing to Fire Talk Records. John Ross, Wild Pink’s frontman, narrates scenes of impressionistic contrast in “Air Drumming Fix You,” jumping from VR scapes to church pews. “She was air drumming to ‘Fix You,'” Ross mutters in the song’s blooming, majestic finale, referencing the Coldplay song before warbling saxophones return beside him. Stream the new track below.
Wild Pink are currently gearing up for a new US tour, where they’ll be performing alongside Greg Mendez, Sun June, Empty Country, Sweet Harm, and The Ravonettes for select dates. Wild Pink’s tour kicks off in Burlington, Vermont on March 13th with Mendez; the band will then hit cities like their native New York, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Houston,...

Dave Matthews — yes, the one with the band — joined Dinosaur Jr. onstage during their show in Seattle Wednesday night (January 12th), where they all did a cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” together.
Dino Jr. like to bring their friends onstage. While they were in London last November, they brought out My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields to shred on a cover The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.” In just the past week alone, they’ve recruited Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Red Fang’s Bryan Giles, and The Dandy Warhols’ Peter Holmström at various shows.
And Matthews wasn’t the only guest Wednesday, either: Mudhoney’s Mark Arm also assisted J Mascis and company for covers of The Stooges’ “T.V. Eye” and “Real Cool Time,” while Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron sat in during “Yeah We Know.” See some fan-captured clips...

In a perfect coalescence of late-’80s indie rock delight, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine joined Dinosaur Jr. onstage in London Tuesday night (November 14th) to perform a rendition of The Cure‘s “Just Like Heaven.”
Mbv and Dino Jr. toured together back in the day, and it looks like they still regularly keep in touch. The latter band brought Shields onstage at a Dinosaur 30th anniversary show in New York in 2015; Shields stopped by Dinosaur Jr.’s Camp Fuzz rock camp in 2019; and J Mascis appeared in a promo clip for Shields’ new Fender pedal last September. And although Dinosaur Jr. have a studio version of their “Just Like Heaven” cover, our records indicate this is the first time Shields has performed it with them live. As you might expect, it was very loud and kicked ass.

J Mascis has announced his fifth solo album, What Do We Do Now, out on February 2nd via Sub Pop. As a preview, the Dinosaur Jr. mastermind has shared the record’s lead single “Can’t Believe We’re Here” and a star-studded accompanying music video.
Mascis recorded What Do We Do Now at his own studio, Bisquiteen, in Western Massachusetts. With guest performances from The B-52’s Ken Mauri on keys and Matthew “Doc” Dunn on steel guitar, it’ll mark Mascis’ first solo album that features full drum and electric leads, though still backed by some acoustic instrumentation that Dinosaur Jr. fans will find familiar. Pre-orders for physical copies are ongoing.
“When I’m writing for the band, I’m always trying to think of doing things [Dinosaur Jr. bandmates] Lou and Murph would fit into,” Mascis said of his creative process. “For myself, I’m thinking more about what...

Having already proven their bona fides with both 1986’s Evol and 1987’s Sister, Sonic Youth delivered their most cohesive, accessible album to date with their 1988 opus Daydream Nation. Originally inspired by the ferocity of hardcore punk, the cerebral art rock of acts like the Velvet Underground and Public Image Ltd., and the avant-garde compositions of Glenn Branca, the album saw the four New York bohos sweeten their no-wave edge with anthemic songwriting.
Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo’s detuned guitars strum plaintively and hypnotically as Daydream Nation slowly shakes itself awake on “Teen Age Riot.” Bassist-singer Kim Gordon channels the Stooges’s eerie chants on 1969’s “We Will Fall” and even cribs from its lyrics: “Spirit, desire/We will fall,” she mumbles before the song’s dual-guitar riff tears the track apart.

Here’s one for the ’90s indie rock lovers: The Breeders have shared “Divine Mascis,” a long-lost version of their Last Splash cut “Divine Hammer” that features Dinosaur Jr. axeman J Mascis on lead vocals. Check it out below.
You’d think Mascis would be playing guitar on the song, since he’s one of the most inventive and beloved players of the original indie rock scene. That’s what The Breeders expected, too, when they sent “Divine Hammer” to the artist way back in the day.
“At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’” Kelley Deal told Uncut. “But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I...

The Breeders and Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis are keeping the dream of alternative nation alive and rocking on their (sorta) new collaboration, “Divine Mascis.”

The Breeders have spent the past three decades crashing on the last splash. The ’90s alt-rock legends are celebrating the occasion with Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition), plus 2023 tour dates where they’ll play the 1993 record in its entirety. You can preview the reissue now with a newly-unearthed track from the era called “Go Man Go,” co-written with Pixies vocalist Black Francis.
Then composed of twin sisters Kim and Kelley Deal along with Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson, The Breeders rose to international fame with Last Splash, their sophomore album. Along with a double-lp of the original tracklist — including classics like “Cannonball” and “Drivin’ on 9” — comes a one-sided etched 12” disc containing “Go Man Go,” as well as a version of “Divine Hammer” with Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis on lead vocals, appropriately titled “Divine Mascis.” The remaster was cut at half speed at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell,...

Man on Man, the duo comprised of Faith No More’s Roddy Bottum and his partner Joey Holman, have announced their sophomore album, Provincetown, due out July 16th via Polyvinyl Records. They also dropped the video for lead single “Showgirls.”
Much of Provincetown was written in the Massachusetts town that gives its namesake and where Bottum and Holman shared their first home together. For example, the noisy pop-punker “Showgirls” was inspired by a Provincetown variety show and sees Bottum and Holman trading off on vocals and guitar licks.
“As we lean into what Man on Man is and will be, two things immediately come up. Energy and community,” said Bottum in the press release. “’Showgirls’ is all that.”

Sasami has shared an alternate version of her track “Tried to Understand,” featuring some bonus shredding from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis.
This grungier take on “Tried to Understand” is vastly different from the one that appears on Sasami’s most recent album, Squeeze. The original, with its breezy acoustic guitar strum and country twang is — to borrow Sasami’s description to Rolling Stone earlier this year — “truly a fucking Sheryl Crow pop song.” But this new take is a fully electric blowout, with Mascis’ characteristically ferocious guitar work spiraling around Sasami’s cool vocals.

Welcome to the West, long after the frontier has closed. Allison Anders’ marvelous drama of a three-girl family is a big step for indie cinema, a highly entertaining examination of women’s aspirations and frustrations out on the non-glamorous working class fringe. Writer-director Anders wastes no time with a terrific cast — Brooke Adams, Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk’s family lacks a father, and ‘men who walk’ becomes the central issue in their lives. Filmed in a gloriously believable New Mexico desert.

Kurt Vile is this indie-rock generation’s preeminent guitar mystic — heir to the vaunted legacy of the Meat Puppets, John Fahey and J. Mascis, spooling out his sly epiphanies with the languid equanimity of a high-as-balls buddy for life. Vile also has a knack for undercutting his chillness with a Neil Young-circa-1974 sad side that keeps his jams down to earth and gives his albums a mordant relatability in these less-than-hopeful times. Vile’s latest LP has his tastiest playing and his deepest writing. It follows his fantastic 2017 collaboration with singer-songwriter wiz Courtney Barnett,...

In case you haven't heard, seminal riot grrl group Sleater-Kinney have returned with their first album in a decade with No Cities To Love. You might know guitarist/vocalist Carrie Brownstein from her current gig yukking it up with Fred Armisen in "Portlandia," but before she was on the hit IFC comedy, she was ripping riffs and shouting it out hard in the seminal band, and the trio has called in a few favors to help get the word out. Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Gerard Way, Connie Britton, Miranda July, J Mascis, Vanessa Bayer, Norman Reedus, Ellen Page, Natasha Lyonne and Armisen all feature in the album's title track video. And there's a clever twist with everyone involved singing along to the song on headphones, so you only hear their vocal renditions of the track until the actual tune gets pumped up toward the end. The Flaming Lips and some "fwends" have taken on the songs of The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," and first up is an iconic little song with Miley Cyrus and Moby. Click here to listen to Miley Cyrus, Moby and Flaming Lips cover "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Cyrus obviously bends her voice to fit the psychedelic trip on this one; but a trained singer singing purposely flat hurts my widdle hawt. It's nice to hear her step outside her wheelhouse, and, judging from the little blips of in-studio banter inserted at the beginning and end, she had at least a little fun. As you'll see the song is conveniently located on the pre-order page for the set, officially dubbed "With a Little Help From My Fwends," a title you will be embarrassed to say aloud, guaranteed. The Oklahoma-founded group has gone the way of PledgeMusic for this release,...

Most people on this side of the pond might recognize veteran English comedian Richard Ayoade as the oddball techie Moss on the Britcom The It Crowd, or as the odd man out from the 2012 A-list sci-fi comedy The Watch (he was the gentleman who was not Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn or Jonah Hill). He's established himself as a novel comic presence onscreen, gravitating toward characters that feel several beats off from the norm and don't mesh with their environments.

Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic followed up last night’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony by playing a secret, invite-only show at a tiny Brooklyn club. Watch the fan-made videos below. In addition to their Rock Hall cohorts Joan Jett, St. Vincent and Kim Gordon (Lorde wasn’t there), Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis and Deer Tick’s John McCauley also took on vocal duties. The 16-song set list was comprised entirely of Nirvana songs, with Joan Jett tackling the classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and St. Vincent’s Annie Clark putting her stamp on “Heart Shaped Box.” Check out the full setlist below the clips. Here’s the setlist for Nirvana and friends’ secret Brooklyn show: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (with Joan Jett) "Breed" (with Joan Jett) "In Bloom" (with Joan Jett) "Territorial Pissings" (with Joan Jett) "Drain You" (with J. It was more than just a "Portlandia" reunion, but also a pop culture mind warp in Boston when Fred Armisen took the stage alongside Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis, as well as members of Sixpence None the Richer and Seattle darling Telekinisis to perform, among other things, TLC's "Waterfalls."
Armisen was slated to perform at the Berklee College of Music with a special guest, his "Saturday Night Live" character, Ian Rubbish.
Fred -- er, make that Ian -- was joined by Mascis, Leigh Nash of Sixpence and Michael Lerner of Telekinesis fame for the TLC cover, as well as a rendition of Dinosaur Jr.'s 1994 hit, "Feel the Pain." And indie rock minds melted in unison.
Mascis joined Armisen as Rubbish on stage earlier this year as part of an "SNL" send-off by an indie rock super band that included Kim Gordon and Aimee Mann. ...

Currently in theaters portraying royalty in "Diana," the upcoming indie "Sunlight Jr." is a reminder of the range Naomi Watts can deliver. Here in a completely different role, she sheds designer fashion and opulence for discount chain clothes and a grittier tale about two people just trying to make it to the next day. Co-starring Matt Dillon and written and directed by Laurie Collyer ("Sherrybaby"), the story follows Melissa and Ray, a devoted but permanently down-on-their-luck couple struggling to make ends meet and pay the bill for the motel room they live in. And even the good news of Melissa's pregnancy brings with it the knowledge that they may not have the resources to care for a child. It's tough material, but there are moments of hope too, and in this exclusive clip we share one of the lighter times between Melissa and Ray. Featuring a score from Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis,...

You know the feeling. You're hanging out with J Mascis on your talk show, when all of a sudden Stephen Colbert bursts onto the stage and dances all up on you with "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk.
No, it's not some weird fever dream, just a moment from last night's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," when Stephen unexpectedly and inexplicably interrupted "Late Night" to show off his moves. (Apparently, it was a stunt to promote Daft Punk's appearance on his own show next week.)...

It's official: After 11 years, Fred Armisen is done with "Saturday Night Live."
In an interview with Splitsider, not only did the "Portlandia" star confirm his exit, but he said he felt he went out with a bang.
"I think it's clear," Armisen said. "I didn't do any kind of official announcement, but I really felt like it was obvious. An ending that was a love letter to all the music I grew up with, and also to my friends and to SNL and to Lorne and to the cast. There was a lot of emotion attached to it, but it was a very positive emotion."
The ending Armisen is referring to is a sketch he performed in May in which he played Ian Rubbish, a member of an English punk rock band. He was joined onstage by his "Portlandia" co-star Carrie Brownstein, plus several music legends including Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones,...

This weekend’s season finale of Saturday Night Live was an especially emotional episode, one that saw beloved cast members Bill Hader and Fred Armisen bid the show a fond adieu. Hader’s big farewell sketch was, of course, the epic wedding between Stefon and Seth Meyers, while Fred Armisen was joined by a calvacade of indie rock legends—Carrie Brownstein! Steve Jones! Aimee Mann! Michael Penn! J. Mascis!—for an emotional performance as his punk rocker alter ego Ian Rubbish.
Both Hader and Armisen were incredibly versatile performers whose contributions to the show will be greatly missed but, in particular, Armisen’s ability to consistently inject an element of musical theatricality into the show will be near impossible to replace. Before he became a SNL cast member back in 2002, Armisen was the drummer for an indie rock act called Trenchmouth, and he always managed to keep his foot in...

Fred Armisen has not announced whether this week's "Saturday Night Live" season finale will indeed be his last episode as rumored, but a sketch during that show was all but a clear farewell from the longtime cast member.
Appearing as Ian Rubbish, his English punk rock character introduced earlier this season, Armisen sang a song with the repeated chorus "It's been all right / It's been a lovely night with you" while on the British music show "Top of the Pops."
During the performance, Armisen was joined by several musical legends, reflecting his own background as a musician: His "Portlandia" collaborator and Wild Flag and Sleater-Kinney leader Carrie Brownstein, Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., and musical powerhouse couple Aimee Mann and Michael Penn.
The band supporting him included Bill Hader, who confirmed he is leaving after this season, and Jason Sudeikis,...

Last year, Kristen Wiig’s emotional SNL sendoff set a high water mark for cast member farewells. (Compare it to, say, the way Chris Kattan said goodbye with a “terrible re-enactment” of his SNL career during his last show 10 years ago.)
I’d say that mark was met — and possibly exceeded — by the closing sketch of tonight’s show, in which Fred Armisen (as punk rocker Ian Rubbish, first introduced when Vince Vaughn hosted a few weeks ago) sang a sweet original tune filled with simple, evocative lyrics like, “It’s been all right, I’ve had a lovely night.

Fans hoping that Saturday Night Live might close out its lackluster 38th season on a strong note probably abandoned that sense of optimism after the evening’s first three sketches (not counting the opening monologue or that amusing, pre-taped Xanax: Gay Summe Weddings ad parody) proved about as funny as running your winning Powerball ticket through the washing machine.
Yet while Ben Affleck‘s introduction into the “Five-Timers Club” certainly won’t go down as a particularly good episode, there were some rewards in store for those who didn’t shut off their TV sets and call it an early night.

Dinosaur Jr. has recorded and released its own version of Phoenix’s new single, “Entertainment” and, surprisingly enough, it wasn’t done in malice. Apparently Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars has been a fan of the prehistoric band since he first saw it in 1991, and he and Dinosaur frontman J. Mascis have developed a sort of mutual appreciation society. Mascis and company’s “remix” of “Entertainment” is really just a sleepy cover, but it’s pretty solid all the same. In semi-related news, Mascis has teamed with vegan shoe company Keep to produce a custom purple sneaker. Each pair has ...

NBC's adaptation of The Gates, based on a British comedy about parents dropping their kids off after school has added Ken Marino and Aasif Mandvi to its cast.
Steve Carrell confirmed he won't be returning to The Office for the finale, Carrell told Access Hollywood, "I just didn’t think it was right for the character, because that character had had an arch within the story and kind of grew and sort of evolved past the idea of the documentary."
As the revamping of Army Wives continues, we learn that Brooke Shields is joining the drama.
Steve Howey will appear in an upcoming episode of New Girl as a professional football player who catches Jess' eye, according to TVLine.
There's a part me that would like to give Beauty and the Beast another chance.

MTV, a new roommate played by Chloe Sevigny and winter are all coming to Portlandia. Series creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein led a conference call Tuesday, previewing the show's third season and winter special, which Brownstein described as "an 11th episode" distinct from the rest of the season. "We never show Portland as the rainy city that it can sometimes be," she said. "[It's] having the characters deal with the darkness and kind of dreariness of winter." But beloved holiday films won't be comedic targets on the special. "We didn't really reference any movies,...

Zeitgeist Films has acquired Jeremy Frindel’s documentary “One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das” for a theatrical release next April. Frindel’s film tracks the story of Jeffrey Kagel, who in 1970 declined to sing for the band that would become Blue Oyster Cult, sold all his possessions and went to the Himalayas to find a saint named Neem Karoli Baba. In the process, Kagel eventually became the chant master Krishna Das, who was recently nominated for a Grammy for Best New Age Album. J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. scored the film with Devadas. Mike Harrop produced. Zeitgeist has recently released “Elena,” “Payback” and “Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters.” Forthcoming releases include “Hannah Arendt” and “Koch.”...

The alt-rock trio Dinosaur Jr, which formed nearly three decades ago out of a hardcore band called Deep Wound, are as famous for their intra-band squabbling as they are for their sound. Bassist Lou Barlow was dumped in 1988 after three albums and drummer Emmett Jefferson “Murph” Murphy III was all but gone by the time Bill Clinton took office. Frontman J. Mascis carried on until 1997, when he retired the Dinosaur name. Then, in 2005, they reunited unexpectedly, and the three albums released since are as vital as their original material; if they’ve mellowed with age and reconciliation, it’s not apparent in the shredding. Vulture caught up with Barlow as the band tours in support of its tenth album, I Bet On the Sky. How does a band that was so legendarily dysfunctional get over the personality clashes to reunite? For me, there was kind of a moment. I went...
