Developing a rapport with hotel staff members is not uncommon for celebrities, especially those who travel frequently enough because of work or press opportunities to have multiple encounters with folks who carry their luggage, make up their rooms and serve them food. But when comedian Sebastian Maniscalco warmly greets the Four Seasons Los Angeles server who’s about to take his order, he’s not just commemorating the umpteenth time he’s popped in for a Cobb salad; rather, it’s because they worked side by side almost two decades ago while Maniscalco was quietly building what has become a comedy empire.
It’s that tireless, immediate man-of-the-people relatability that has helped him connect with one audience after another, and eventually, carried him from one side of the table to the other where he is celebrating 20 years in comedy.
Maniscalco might be an under-the-radar performer to many among the teen...

The real heroes of Comedy Central’s celebrity roasts are the editors. Sunday night’s “Roast of Bruce Willis” was taped on July 14, which means there was plenty of time to cut, tweak and massage the program. But that also means viewers got to see a Dennis Rodman who sort of made sense, a Lil Rel Howery who didn’t completely bomb, and a Dom Irrera who didn’t use the “n” word.
Viewers also missed out on some jokes cut for time — and perhaps for content. Nikki Glaser’s crack that she hoped the Roast was on Netflix so that people would see it was also on the cutting room floor.
Kevin Pollack, who also participated in the roast, told IndieWire he was “incredibly relieved it went as well as it did. Because it’s not particularly my cup of tea, what those things are. I loved them in the old days,...

Whether it be jokes about his follicly challenged head, his so-so music career or his aging-action-hero persona, Bruce Willis took it like a man when he became the latest target of a Comedy Central roast. His wife picked on him, as did his former leading lady and even an NBA star. Here are the best jokes of the night… including a couple by the man of the hour himself.
“Bruce Willis is what you get if you drain the white part of Dwayne Johnson.” — Gordon-Levitt
“I look at our marriage like ‘The Sixth Sense.’ You were dead the whole time.” — Demi Moore
“On ‘Moonlighting,’ I played a former model, which I was, and Bruce played an asshole, which he is.” — Cybill Shepherd
“Hollywood wouldn’t be Hollywood if they didn’t reward a man for aging into mediocrity.” — Cybill Shepherd

As the focus of this year’s Comedy Central Roast, Bruce Willis was hit with repeated jabs about his age, his marriage, his Planet Hollywood business venture, his side music career and his recent string of less-than-spectacular films — and most of them came from the surprise appearance of ex-wife Demi Moore.
Saying that she was “married to Bruce for the first three ‘Die Hard’ movies, which makes sense because the last two sucked,” Moore served as an impromptu roaster as she recounted memories of raising their three daughters, who were also in attendance, together.
“People wonder why our marriage came to an end, and in all honesty I think it was because some jealousy started to creep in. I think Bruce never really got over the fact that I rocked the bald look better than he did,” Moore joked. “After our divorce, he said he considered the end of our marriage his biggest failure,...

The stars came out on Saturday night to the Comedy Central Roast of Die Hard institution and American treasure Bruce Willis — and it was a celebratory festival of reading the non-Oscar nominated actor to filth. But one of the best roasts of the evening came from surprise guest — and Willis’ ex-wife — Demi Moore.
In the middle of the ceremony, roast master Joseph Gordon-Levitt, out of nowhere, announced that it was Moore’s turn take the dais, surprising Willis, roasters and the audience. Not originally on the roast roster, the Empire actress stepped out on stage to excited applause ready to drag Willis.
She dug into his age, his bald head, his music, and made some Die Hard cracks — all topics that were targeted during the evening. But there was one thing that only Moore could skewer that no one else on stage could: their marriage.

Comedy Central has announced who will join Roast Master Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the upcoming roast of Bruce Willis.
Willis’ “Moonlighting” co-star Cybill Shepherd is among the roasters, as well as “Motherless Brooklyn” co-star Edward Norton. Kevin Pollak, Dom Irrera, Nikki Glaser, Lil Rey Howery and Jeff Ross will also take part.
Gordon-Levitt, who starred in “Looper” with Willis, said when he was announced as the emcee that he has “looked up to Bruce my whole life” — but that won’t stop him from “mercilessly making fun of him.”

Over the past few years, Netflix has made quite the name for itself. Sure, it started off as a mail service, and later a streaming service, but in 2012, it broke new ground when it launched its first original series, House of Cards. The approach was a complete departure from a cable TV perspective. Over the past several decades, audiences had grown accustomed to the standard means by which a TV series was released, and it wasn’t clear whether or not a streaming service — what’s more, a streaming service that drops full seasons of their shows at once — could be successful as a network.

Before it premiered, many fans wondered how Mr. Robot Season 2 could possibly top the series' amazing first season, which was widely regarded as one of the best of 2015.
Now that the season has included with the shocking, incredible Mr. Robot Season 2 Finale, one thing is very clear: while the show didn't consistently match the highs of the first season, there was plenty to love about it. Occasionally, there were even moments and performances that were even better than Mr. Robot Season 1.
Angela was brought in on Whiterose's plan, Elliot was shot by a returned-from-the-"dead" Tyrell Wellick, and Darlene wound up squarely in the hands of the FBI after Cisco's tragic death.
We're taking a look back at the best and the worst (and the strangest) of the past 12 installments of Mr. Robot. Check out our report card, and let us know your thoughts!

A review of the Mr. Robot season 2 finale coming up just as soon as I go find my manual... "Ready to look at what we accomplished?" -Wellick In my review of the first half of "Python," I suggested the episode might have played better had the whole finale aired on the same night, because the first hour was all teases (plus that surreal interview with Angela and the little girl) for revelations that were presumably coming in the season's concluding installment. "Python, Part 2" did, in fact, reveal several things: That Darlene survived the Dark Army's assassination attempt (but Cisco did not), that Dom has apparently known for quite some time that Elliot was the true mastermind of the 5/9 hack, that Scott from Evil Corp has been the one sending Joanna all the gifts and messages, that Wellick is really still alive and not just another personality inside Elliot's fractured mind,...

A review of tonight's Mr. Robot coming up just as soon as I give Africa to the Chinese... "But sooner or later, Elliot, this will all catch up to you." -Angela At a shade over 43 minutes without commercials, "Hidden Process" is easily the shortest standalone episode of season 2(*). It's also, not coincidentally, the tightest and most suspenseful installment of the season, bringing various story threads together in a way that had more impact because — particularly in the second half — the story kept moving forward with a relentlessness making clear something very bad was about to happen. And then it did. (*) Technically, each half of the season premiere was shorter, with "Unmask Part 1" clocking in at a brisk 40-plus minutes, and "Part 2" at 42 minutes, but they aired together and were primarily treated as one big episode. Prior to tonight, the shortest episode to air on its own this year was "Successor,...

Elliot may be walking the streets again in this week’s Mr. Robot… but that doesn’t mean he’s smiling underneath that hoodie.
Ok, fine, Elliot never smiles. But he’s got a lot on his mind just the same. The episode kicked off by flashing back to the end of Season 1, when Elliot heard that knock on his apartment door. A review of tonight's Mr. Robot coming up just as soon as I create an Angelfire fan page... "I didn't know I could do that." -Darlene A year ago, an episode like "Successor" — in which Elliot is entirely absent, along with his eponymous alter ego, while the focus is almost entirely on Darlene and her remaining comrades — would have been unthinkable. In season 1, Elliot was the show, and vice versa, and most of fsociety barely registered as more than vague shapes lingering on the edge of the frame (which, given the framing of Mr. Robot, rendered them particularly obscure). At this stage of season 2, though, it mostly works. It's not even that Mobley or Trenton or Cisco have transformed into vivid and exciting characters (though we're at least at the point where I remember their names), but that after spending so much time this summer inside Elliot's head — up to...

We're into the second half of Mr. Robot season 2 (USA ordered a third season yesterday), and I've been covering the highs (dazzling visuals, excellent performances), lows (super-sized episodes that sometimes drag), and mysteries (what exactly is up with Elliot's new regimen?) in my weekly episodic reviews. Tonight's episode, "Handshake," included several major developments, and I was fortunately able to get a few minutes on the phone today to discuss them and other aspects of season 2 with the show's creator, showrunner, and, for season 2, sole director, Sam Esmail. A few of my own thoughts on "Handshake" — with full spoilers — followed by my conversation with Esmail (which covered a lot but still didn't have time to get into last week's Full House homage) coming up just as soon as I enjoy the shrimp cocktail... The predominant theme of this season seems to be that control is an illusion.
Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 3 drove that point home thoroughly, with several characters echoing versions of the same thing: There is, quite simply, no way to remain in control of a life that is, by necessity, random and chaotic.
"Kernel Panic" was, as usual, a brilliant installment of an always-brilliant series. Particularly impressive was the way the show managed to weave in time to significantly develop new characters Dom Dipierro (the FBI agent investigation the 5/9 Hack) and Ray, Elliot's new, very questionable, friend.
To start with, Romero was murdered. Romero was one of the fsociety hackers who was more outwardly suspicious about Elliot and his leadership skills (and sanity). Elliot pulled a gun on him, so Romero's doubts were fair.

Sam Esmail's brilliant drama-thriller is back with a vengeance.
Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 1 was an immaculately directed, often shocking return to the dizzying world of Elliot Alderson. All in all, it was everything I hoped the second season premiere would be.
I'm wary about two-parters (so long) but in this instance, every minute was warranted. Given that the cast of characters had expanded so much by the close of the first season, it was smart to use the premiere to sort of "catch up" with nearly everyone, while still finding time to introduce new faces.
We first opened on the moment in which Elliot initiated the big, season-ending E Corp hack.
This was a cool choice, given that we didn't see this happen on screen back in Mr. Robot Season 1 – the hack took place sometime between the end of Mr. Robot Season 1 Episode 9 and the beginning of the Mr. Robot Season 1 Finale,...

Mr. Robot has returned for a second season. I already published some spoiler-free thoughts on tonight's two-hour premiere, so now it's time to get into the specifics, coming up just as soon as I've discovered Seinfeld... "And this is why I'm different: sometimes, my mask takes over." -Elliot The Mr. Robot season 1 finale made an interesting choice in skipping over what seemed like major pieces of the larger fsociety plot — how the Evil Corp hack went down, what happened to Tyrell Wellick — to focus on Elliot dealing with the knowledge that he was Mr. Robot, and vice versa. At the time, I felt this was the right choice, since the show is ultimately about Elliot and what's going on inside his head, and his epiphany about having multiple personalities was much more important than any plot mechanics involving secondary characters. "Unmask"(*) actually rewinds to show Elliot executing the hack while Wellick watches — marveling that,...

If you were seeking an ever-intense examination of Elliot Alderson’s current, out-of-sorts psyche as USA Network’s acclaimed Mr. Robot opened Season 2, you had to come away quite satisfied.
But if you were hoping for answers about Tyrell Wellick’s fate and/or Elliot’s “missing” three days, or a follow-up on the connection between White Rose’s male persona and E Corp CEO Phillip Price, you got nary a thing.

Perhaps I was among a subset of Mr. Robot fans who appreciated Season 1 as a clever and engaging “heist” drama that was enriched by the fact that its antihero was, as eventually affirmed, plagued by mental illness.
The start of Season 2, though, inverts that formula, testing your willingness to cascade down many a dark rabbit hole with Eliot. But is that we want, to abandon the semblance of structure that the first season had, in the name of even more “What is real?” fake-outs? Wouldn’t that risk steering the acclaimed USA Network drama into being more of a niche appeal than ever?...

In between Mystery Science Theater 3000 and South Park, Comedy Central's biggest breakout was a cheaply made animated show called Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Co-created by comedian Jonathan Katz and animator/producer Tom Snyder, it starred Katz as the titular shrink and his relationships with his receptionist (Laura Silverman) and his son (H. Jon Benjamin, now of Archer and Bob's Burgers fame). The show was fleshed out by comedians like Ray Romano, Dom Irrera, Dave Attell, Louis C.K., Denis Leary, Jon Stewart, and Janeane Garofalo. The show last aired in 2002, but a few years back, Katz dusted off his...

The new USA series "Necessary Roughness" premieres tonight and all I can say is thank God because those promos have been running for like the last month and a half during the weekend "Law and Order: We Frown at Things Seriously" marathons and I'll be happy to see them go. First of all, I keep seeing that one guy and thinking "Hey! It's that guy from 'House' who had a nasty case of thrush!" because that's all I can think of when I see him. IMDb indicates that his name is Marc Blucas. Good for him. Also, hopefully I won't have to listen to star Callie Thorne spit "I'm not a hooker, I'm a therapist" like it's supposed to be funny anymore. Really, though, it just seems like someone played darts with popular drama plot lines and current buzzwords (Divorce! Football! Sexting! Therapy! ) and tried to turn it into a show.

Today is the 30th anniversary of Eddie Murphy joining the cast of 'Saturday Night Live.' An unknown comedian outside of the New York standup scene, Murphy became the show's standout performer and revitalized the series during its first true slump.
1980 was a volatile time for 'SNL.' Lorne Michaels had left and new producer Jean Doumanian hired a completely new staff. She passed up Jim Carrey, John Goodman and Dom Irrera for actors who went on to do nothing. She almost hired another no-name over Murphy, but the staff persisted and convinced her to add him by the fourth show, which aired Nov. 22, 1980.

Milwaukee - Henry Winkler is not the Fonz.
He played the coolest guy on Happy Days for eleven seasons. But he doesn’t wear a leather jacket, ride a motorcycle or fix things by bumping them with his elbow. He’s not even Italian. He’s got a life that has gone beyond the Fonz. There’s probably a generation that knows him better for Adam Sandler movies and Arrested Development. On a May evening at the Quail Ridge bookstore in Raleigh, there is a group of kids under 12 years old that know him as the author of the Hank Zipzer books (along with co-writer Lin Oliver).
Many stars of the ’70s sell their tawdry memoirs of behind the scenes perversions. Winkler created a young adult book series that taps into grade school life instead of the action in Arnold’s bathroom. We’ll have to wait for lurid tales of the Hooper triplets.

I'm within a month of being done with my first year of Grad school, which means that the next few weeks are a veritable flurry of tests, projects, academic advising meetings and the like. And that's just to do with school, never mind the other mess with regards to what I'm going to do for the summer, where I'm going to be living next year, and just what the hell am I going to do with myself a year from now after I've actually earned this degree so I will not be getting a good night's sleep until probably May 13th at the earliest. According to certain people I get more amusing the more sleep deprived I get so maybe all of y'all have something to look forward to. Welcome to Tuesday night:

How hadn't it come to this before? A new reality show called Adopted will follow Pauly Shore as he adopts an African baby. The show's official website dubs it a mockumentary film (that, perhaps, will be broken down into installments for distribution -- unless there's just faulty Post reportage). But the baby's adoption is only the beginning! The fresh-procured child learns its first steps at grandmother Mitzi's The Comedy Store in Hollywood, where Dom Irrera jokingly blows a wad of cigar smoke in its face and a fast-talking, old-school agent explains to it that they "already have a black comic" for that night. You've gotta learn the ropes, kid! You can read more about this in Pauly's harrowing upcoming memoir: Hollywood: A Bio-Dome of Prejudice. [NY Post]...

TORONTO -- Martin Short, Jason Alexander and Jimmy Fallon will host their own galas at the second annual Just for Laughs Toronto Festival in July, organizers said Tuesday.
Veteran American ventriloquist Jeff Dunham will also perform at Toronto's Massey Hall.
Other Just for Laughs highlights include comic showcases including the Asian Invasion, hosted by Canadian stand-up Sugar Sammy and to feature Jo Koy, and the Italian-themed Wiseguys show, headlined by the Doo-Wops, Joey Kola and Dom Irrera.
Just for Laughs COO Bruce Hills said the Toronto edition will remain tailored for a consumer market, unlike the industry-oriented Montreal run July 10-20 that attracts L.A. talent scouts and executives.
For its sophomore run, Just for Laughs Toronto will also for the first time fill local comedy clubs. The Headliners series at Yuk Yuk's will showcase Wendy Liebman, Kevin Hart, Gerry Dee, Al Madrigal, Australian comic Adam Hills, Jeff Ross and Elon Gold. The Absolute Comedy club will host a Canadian comic showcase, hosted by Debra DiGiovanni, while Second City will host "The Sketch Show", headlined by Craig Robinson.

DirecTV has lined up three original series for its general entertainment network the 101 -- including a court show with a comedic twist from Bunim-Murray Prods., a game show hosted by Meat Loaf and a Joan Lunden-hosted program that honors local heroes -- as it looks to beef up programming on the nearly two-year-old channel.
The satellite provider's intention for the 101 -- appropriately located on Channel 101 -- is to provide viewers with programming they can't find on other channels, said Eric Shanks, executive vp at DirecTV Entertainment.
The new series, all of which will debut in the first quarter, are:
-- "The Supreme Court of Comedy", exec produced by Jonathan Murray, features real cases originally brought before small claims courts in California that will now be presided over by comedian Dom Irrera at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. The "counselors" representing the plaintiffs and defendants will be alternating comedians.
Matchups include Sinbad vs. Tom Arnold, Tom Papa vs. Victoria Jackson, Jamie Kennedy vs. Aries Spears and Jeff Richards and Tommy Davidson vs. Paul Rodriguez. Ten episodes have been ordered.
-- "Rock & a Hard Place," exec produced by Conor McAnally of Blaze TV and Michael Binkow, is a 10-episode game show, hosted by Meatloaf, in which two teams of recording artists test their knowledge on subjects ranging from music history to current events.

That one-man comedy factory, Steve Oedekerk, is back with another Paramount/Nickelodeon animated feature film that, like "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" (which he co-wrote and produced) before it, is really just a Nick TV pilot in disguise. Indeed, "Adventures in the Barnyard" already has a spring launch date.
Unlike the Oscar-nominated "Jimmy Neutron", though, "Barnyard" (which Oedekerk wrote, directed and produced with Paul Marshal) faces a rash of animation competition this year and, quality-wise, it's not at the top of the haystack. While youngsters might enjoy the movie, more discerning tweens, teens and adults will not be as easily amused, and boxoffice prospects look modest, albeit followed by a long DVD shelf life.
The story is simple enough: When the farmer turns in for the night, the animals go wild. They walk on their hind legs, talk and party (the barn becomes a rockin' nightclub). Otis the Cow (voiced by Kevin James) is in a stalled adolescence to the consternation of his father, Ben (Sam Elliott). Ben is the animals' stern but caring leader and protector (keeping watch for preying coyotes over the barnyard each night from a hilltop). Otis is supposed to spell his dad's shifts but often makes excuses or shows up late after goofing off. When Ben gets severely injured protecting the henhouse from an attack, will Otis change his ways and be cow enough to fill his dad's hooves?
The computer-generated animation is painstakingly achieved, but it's hard to match the level set by Disney/Pixar. The coyotes, looking a lot like foxes, certainly succeed in terrifying sensitive viewers (especially, one would imagine, toddlers). Oddly, the many songs heard in the film often feel like snippets or are barely intelligible over the music track. The exception is Elliott's performance of Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne's "I Won't Back Down".
The few humans in the film are extraneous. The farmer's (Fred Tatasciore) screen time is negligible; there's a middle-aged neighbor couple (Maria Bamford and Oedekerk), whose shtick consists of a babbling wife and her tuned-out, TV-watching spouse; and there's a predictable sequence in which a kid (Oedekerk) gets paid back by the animals for a cow-tipping incident.
The animals' voices include Danny Glover (Miles the Mule), Andie MacDowell (Etta the Hen), Jeff Garcia (Pip the Mouse), Cam Clarke (Freddy the Ferret) and, as two barnyard newcomers, Courteney Cox (sweet, pregnant Daisy the Cow) and Wanda Sykes (her wisecracking pal Bessy the Cow). Special mention goes to Dom Irrera, who voices Duke the Dog and steals every scene he's in.
One nice touch is the sensitive handling of parenting for young viewers. As Otis and Daisy gradually grow closer, Otis (eventually) matures into a father figure, both for the barnyard and for Daisy's calf. Earlier, Ben had told his son that he is Otis' adopted dad and that he had found him as a baby and taken him in. In a similar vein, no mention is made of barnyard stranger Daisy's past or any romantic partner. She just shows up pregnant, allowing Otis, at the climactic birth of her calf, to very naturally slip into a paternal role for her (now their) gurgling newborn.

NEW YORK -- At least one comic will definitely leave this year's Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal with a TV talent deal in the pocket, as Spike TV said Friday it will hold a special "Spike the Mike" showcase there in a quest to find the next comedy star. Ten performers, scouted and selected during the festival, on Saturday will perform seven-minute sets in front of Spike TV executives and comic Dom Irrera Saturday night with the winner getting a talent holding/development deal with the network. This will give the winner the opportunity to create, pitch or even host a show on Spike TV, the network and festival organizers said. Comedy insiders said the event means further validation of JFL as a platform for talent discovery and could also attract attention from other U.S. networks looking for ways to capitalize on comedy festivals.
