A trailer has dropped for the forthcoming festival darling feature ‘Wild Fire’, writer/director Jennifer Cooney’s scintillating directorial debut.
The story centres around seven acquaintances who get radically honest about their lives one night around a fire after a party. Unknowingly, they all come to the gathering at a crossroads—one they each have been avoiding for their entire lives. After an unyielding game of Truth or Dare, the exemplary couple opens up about what they’re going through—that they’re not as perfect as they seem. This sets the stage for the rest of the group to open up about their lives, unspoken desires…and secrets. Each couple must choose a path the following morning back in their bedrooms. Will they integrate their newly exposed truths…or act as if nothing has changed?
Directed by Cooney, the cast includes Celeste Marcone, Madeleine Dee, Jillian Geurts, Siena D’Addario,...

“The Pact” exceeded my expectations. I honestly had never heard of this film until I was doing a search for horror films during that particular year and decided to give this unnoticed film a shot. I am glad I did. I was expecting a rather predictable haunted house flick that turned out to be . . . the exact opposite of what I thought would happen. Upon research, I found out this film had a good reception at a festival and then the director was given a shot to make it “again” with a better budget. This is one of the better horror...

The Pact, the feature directing debut of Nicholas McCarthy, is a refreshing and effectively scary horror movie hybrid, a gimmick-less thriller produced in an age when gimmicks are pounding the genre to death.
McCarthy has crafted a lean, no-nonsene, low-budget indie flick. It is not comprised of phony “found footage.” It’s not shot in the first person. It’s not a reboot of a beloved franchise. It’s not in 3-D, nor would 3-D enhance any of the frights. It’s not a sequel. And, spoiler alert I suppose, it doesn’t have any vampires nor zombies.
That all said, The Pact shouldn’t be particularly praised for what it is not, but for what it is. As McCarthy proven with his previous short films, such as Chinese Box and a short version of The Pact from which the feature is derived, he is particularly good at establishing mood and atmosphere,...

Director/writer: Nicholas McCarthy. Cast: Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien, Agnes Bruckner, Mark Steger, Haley Hudson, Kathleen Rose Perkins, and Sam Ball. The Pact is Nicholas McCarthy's first feature. The story here is based on a short film of the same name that debuted at Sundance in 2011. The short has been expanded upon with some casting changes. Caity Lotz stars as Annie; she is a woman returning to her birthplace. Her mother has recently died and the funeral leads to some mysterious disappearances. McCarthy then plays with genres as the film begins as a supernatural mystery that shifts to a serial killer thriller. Both of these genres are set in one very haunted house. The story begins with Nichole (Agnes Bruckner) who returns for the funeral first. She talks with her daughter on Skype late one night only to see mysterious shapes out of the corner of her eye.

Some middling reviews are always a troubling sign, but, regardless, Deadline reports that Entertainment One have picked up Wish You Were Here, an Australian thriller starring Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer. This marks a reunion of sorts for many of the members who were on board the 2010 hit Animal Kingdom, being the latest feature from Blue-Tongue Films. Directed by Kieran Darcy-Smith, it’s mystery at heart; the story centers on “four friends [who] embark on a carefree holiday, but only three return home.” From this point, they’re forced to determine what happened on their trip.
That less-than-enthusiastic reaction is unfortunate — it’s one of the few Sundance movies I was looking forward to before the festival started — but some of the complimentary notices toward Edgerton‘s performance and Darcy-Smith‘s direction are, nonetheless, good signs. I guess it won’t all be a let-down!
The picture is expected to hit U.

A film that has been kept a relatively low profile so far is The Pact, which made its debut at Sundance last night and will be playing at the fest over the next week. The low profile, I imagine, is to generate mystery. Very few photos have been released and no clips have been revealed, until now.

Year: 2011Director: Sage BannickCast: Bryan Kirkwood, Sam Ball, Yvonne Zima, Kelly B. Eviston, Denny Kirkwood
Vincent is a highly respected high school science teacher in the small, picturesque town of Liberty. Despite his friendly demeanor and seemingly perfect life, he is hiding a few dark secrets. First, he is having a sexual relationship with one of his students. Second, his brother Oliver, who murdered his parents when they were kids because he suspected them of wanting to kill him to collect insurance money, has escaped from prison and will do anything to protect Vincent and prevent his sexual indiscretion from being revealed.
All too often, low budget horror films feel as if they have been thrown together simply to make a quick buck or provide a source of bragging for the filmmakers. They more often than not lack any real heart, originality, or purpose. This makes it all the more refreshing when a low budget,...

The students at a local high school are falling victim to their science teacher's evil twin brother who is trying to cover up his brother's affair with a missing student.
This slasher manages to juggle many plot threads including a slasher storyline, a tale of a stepfather abusing his young stepson, a missing person's procedural, a teen drama, and a play on duality with twins representing good & evil. Only problem, as soon as any of these story threads start to engage the viewer, once they start to become involving, they are abruptly over with. There's some interesting ideas, but with a brief running time of only 80 minutes, this is one of those rare films that should've been longer so that the material could've been better fleshed out and that the characterizations...

*Full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Sage Bannick.
Director: Sage Bannick.
Writers: Ari Bernstein, Damon Abdallah, and Sage Bannick.
The Absent is 4/10 high school drama, 4/10 slasher and 1/10 psychological thriller. Releasing on DVD March 15th through Passion River, The Absent is an eighty minute challenge upon the attention, with some tension coming from a teacher/student interplay. You see, Vincent is a science teacher with a crush on a young student, named Katie. Soon, characters are dying and motivations are not fully realized. An indie film with passion and ambition, The Absent just never becomes compelling.
Director Sage Bannick has stated that this film was shot in ten days: "on a shoestring budget." So right out of the starting block, this film is rushed. Most films require at least two weeks, excluding re-shoots. A film just cannot rise to any excellent quality, with such a short shooting schedule.

All houses are haunted. Haunted by the memories of those who lived in them. Whether or not those memories can have physical manifestations is up for debate.
In Nicholas McCarthy‘s moody The Pact, Anna (Jewel Staite) and Adrian (Sam Ball) are tasked with getting their recently deceased mother’s affairs in order. Anna, the more committed of the two, desperately pours through her mom’s papers looking for proof of her estate while Adrian picks through cardboard boxes stuffed with old toys.
Neither of them had much love for their mother. They also seem fairly distant from each other, the way children from abusive homes act towards each other long after their tormenting has ended.
There’s some vague, touching nostalgia as Adrian tries to conjure up good memories around a teddy bear, but Anna is completely focused on her work, on sorting out the details so both of...

Andy Serkis, best known as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and up-and-coming actor Samuel Ball have landed key roles opposite Jennifer Garner in Revolution Studios' 13 Going on 30 for director Gary Winnick. Serkis plays the boss of adult Jenna (Garner), while Ball plays her boyfriend, a New York Rangers hockey player. Mark Ruffalo and Judy Greer also star. Susan Arnold and Donna Arkoff Roth are producing the project with Gina Matthews. Kathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith wrote the script. Both actors are repped by the Gersh Agency. Serkis last starred on the big screen in 24 Hour Party People. Ball has appeared in such films as the United Artists/American Zoetrope's Pumpkin and DreamWorks Pictures' The Last Castle.
