The disc of the year has finally arrived and it’s 1000 worth the wait. William Cameron Menzies’ flight into schoolboy paranoia now really looks like it ought to hang in the Louvre; the entire show is inspired Modern Art. When Martians conduct a brain-snatching takeover of Middle America little David MacLean must save the day, with an assist from an astronomer buddy and a sexy city nurse. The review is mostly concerned with how the new Ignite release looks and sounds. The rejuvenation of this fantasy masterpiece will turn fans of the 1950s sci-fi boom back into delighted ‘Gee Whiz’ kids.

3-D in CinemaScope? That seems like a strange combination, but this obscure treasure hunt adventure with Joanne Dru and Mark Stevens is indeed billed as being filmed in the ‘Miracle of Stereo-Vision,’ five years after the demise of Hollywood’s first fling with ‘depthies.’ Kino and the 3-D Film Archives extras include two vintage 3-D shorts, one of them never screened in 3-D.

The Coen brothers' movies are not, for the most part, overflowing with sentiment. Black humor, existential mysteries, endlessly quotable dialogue? Sure. Unabashed emotion? Shut the fuck up, Donny. But they've learned to lace their films with deft musical moments that do that cathartic work for them. Their new movie, Inside Llewyn Davis (out December 6th), is their deepest musical dive since 2000's O Brother, Where Art Thou? The title character is an emotionally blocked, career-stymied folk singer (played by Oscar Isaac) in early-Sixties Greenwich Village, and the film is packed with performances.

Lawless; The Girl; The Imposter
Australian-born film-maker John Hillcoat is an often underrated auteur whose arresting filmography spans the broiling prison rebellion of Ghosts… of the Civil Dead, through the rugged western terrain of The Proposition to the bleak apocalypse of The Road, the last beautifully (but unpopularly) adapted from Cormac McCarthy's famously "unfilmable novel". Collaborating frequently with writer and composer Nick Cave, Hillcoat returns obsessively to themes of familial loyalty and modern mythology, with a quasi-biblical sense of archetypal justice and retribution often firing the infernal engine of his dramas.
Fittingly, family, mythology and vengeful justice are all at the heart of Lawless (2012, Momentum, 18), screenwriter Cave's adaptation of Matt Bondurant's visceral historical novel The Wettest County in the World. Handsomely set in prohibition-era Virginia (Benoît Delhomme's location cinematography conjures a perfect blend of pastoral lyricism and brutal violence), the film follows the changing fortunes of the Bondurant brothers,...

Odd List Ivan Radford Jan 3, 2013
As 2012 recedes into history, Ivan counts down his pick of the year's finest movie soundtracks...
While Den of Geek writers were busy voting for the top film of the year, I’ve been rifling through my collection of albums from the last 12 months to work out which film soundtrack was the best. The conclusion? It’s been one heck of a year. (Please excuse the long list of Honourable Mentions at the end…)
These are the best movie soundtracks of 2012. Probably.
1. The Master (Jonny Greenwood)
A quick rewatch of the trailer to Paul Thomas Anderson’s film reminds you of the power of Jonny Greenwood’s music. The Master is surpassed by its haunting score, which nails the psychological state of Joaquin Phoenix’s Able-Bodied Seamen, increasingly dominated by His Master’s Voice. It may not be as lyrical as Greenwood’s Norwegian Wood soundtrack,...

What makes some film soundtracks transcend from mere background music to helping a director tell a story and help invoke an emotional response? Is it a clever mix of well chosen tunes that capture the zeitgeist or an eclectic mix of older material that either captures a time and place or sets a tone of nostalgia? The answer varies depending on the feature film. 2012 was a fantastic year for original motion picture movie scores but not so good for soundtracks. Still, Simon and I have managed to pull a list of what we feel were the very best.

The key to any voyage into the twangy depths of this weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is planning.
San Francisco's annual free celebration of bluegrass (and also not bluegrass) in Golden Gate Park, now in its 12th consecutive year, has gotten so popular that shuttling between stages to see all of your favorite bands can prove virtually impossible. Instead, the best idea is often just to get there early, pick a spot near the stage you're most interested in and stay there for the long haul.
(Scroll Down For Playlist And Lineup)
While the lineup was announced months ago, the actual full schedule, complete with set times, was only released recently. Essential planning's gotta all be done Right This Very Second.
Our top recommendations are Ben Kweller, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, The Dirty Three, the Heartless Bastards, Son Volt and Les Claypool's Duo De Twang. If you're curious as to why this is exciting,...

John Hillcoat likes to refer to Nick Cave – a key collaborator on all of his movies including his latest, the stylish gangster epic Lawless – as his right hand man or ‘the master”. It’s easy to see why. Cave, the musician and author, is Hillcoat’s creative soul mate. Lawless is the third movie Cave has written for Hillcoat and he’s also compiled a brilliant, haunting soundtrack for the film featuring bluegrass artists performing contemporary rock classics, like Velvet Undergound’s White Light/ White Heat.
And sharp-eyed fans of Cave might well spot him making a cameo appearance in Lawless too. “Yes, I am actually in Lawless,” Cave smiles. “There’s a scene in Chicago at the very start with a dead gangster in a car – well, I’m the dead gangster.”
So Cave is clearly in tune with Hillcoat and was involved with Lawless from the very start of the project.

By Sean O’Connell Hollywoodnews.com: The wettest county usually overflows with moonshine. By the end of John Hillcoat’s new Prohibition-era crime thriller, it’s soaked in crimson streams of blood. Once dubbed “The Wettest County,” Hillcoat’s “Lawless” stars Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf and Jason Clarke as the Bondurant brothers, moonshiners from Southern Virginia who meet violent resistance from local gangsters, a Chicago law enforcer (Guy Pearce) and a rival mobster (Gary Oldman) with a taste for blood. “I was looking forward to finding something that had more tonal range,” Hillcoat told me at the start of a recent interview, when we began by talking about “The Road” and “The Proposition,” his two previous (excellent) films. “Something with color and different moods.” Mission accomplished with “Lawless,” which finds depth and resonance in the relationships between the three brothers rather than in the standard routines of the criminal-enterprise storyline...

Directed by John Hillcoat, Lawless is a story of outlaws in the tumultuous time of Prohibition in the 1920s. Taking place in Virgina’s Franklin County, nicknamed “The Wettest County in the World,” it follows the actions of the three Bondurant brothers Jack (Shia Labeouf), Forrest (Tom Hardy), and Howard (Jason Clarke). While leading the illegal alcohol business in the state’s backwoods, the Bondurants receive pressure from rival gangsters like Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman), and a dirty deputy named Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce).
The film, adapted by writer/musician Nick Cave, is based on the book “The Wettest County in the World” by Matt Bondurant. This Bondurant, a teacher at a southern university and a writer with three books to his name, is a direct descendant of the Bondurant brothers celebrated in this film. Cannes, France -- Writing the Prohibition-era bootlegger crime film "Lawless" – his second realized script and largest movie production yet – taught Australian songwriter Nick Cave certain foundational lessons of Hollywood moviemaking.
"I learned that it's a waste of time to graphically kill animals in scripts," Cave says, laughing. "It's going to hit the cutting room floor."
The education and development of Nick Cave, screenwriter, continues with "Lawless," a tale of three bootlegging brothers (Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke) in rural 1920s Virginia. In adapting Matt Bondurant's novel, Cave was predictably moved to include scenes from the book of a pig's slaughter and a dead calf's birth, but had to settle for gangster gunplay and an ominous atmosphere alive with the constant threat of sudden brutality.
The film marks Cave's continuing dalliance with screenwriting, "an extracurricular" activity, he calls it, along with novel and poetry writing. That's in addition to his "No.

Nick Cave, who wrote the script to Lawless, explains how the film brings the violence and lyricism of the book on which it was based to the screen and merges the genres of the urban gangster and rural western
Nick Cave is explaining why Lawless, a film punctuated by scenes of brutal violence, could have been even more visceral. "In my original draft of the script, the opening scene culminated with a pig having its throat cut," he says, chuckling. "It was bloody and shocking and it kind of signalled what was to come, but they discovered you just can't pull a pig's snout back without it going crazy. This," he says drily, "is the kind of stuff that film-making teaches you."

Perhaps consider this a bit of a spoiler post, at least musically. So if you want to go in blind to John Hillcoat's prohibition drama "Lawless," we suggest you divert your eyes now. For the rest of you still with us, man, the soundtrack to "Lawless" is just one more reason to get excited for the film which lands on August 29th. By now you know it boasts an incredible cast including Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, Shia Labeouf and Jason Clarke. You also know that the score was written by longtime Hillcoat collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who wrote the haunting scores for "The Proposition," "The Road" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (the multi-hyphenate Cave, an author, also wrote the "Lawless" screenplay).

Voices tangled, the Little Willies’ Norah Jones and Richard Julian lean into a demi-lurching chorus of Ralph Stanley’s “I Worship You” to open _For The Good Times_, the follow-up to their 2006 self-titled debut. Just when the drunken kitsch seems to swell up, the fingers fly, Jones offers a plucky lament about her worship not being enough - and it’s obvious that these friends who got together in 2003 to celebrate classic Wurlitzer country have lost none of their reverence for tear in your beer songs.

Earlier this year, we saw the Wtf pairing of the millennium when Jack White teamed up with the loud and crude Insane Clown Posse for a one-off track. In another perplexingly rando collab, it appears that the surviving members of The Doors have gotten together in the studio with dubstep king Skrillex.
The collaboration comes compliments of a new documentary, "Re:generation," which finds five popular DJs/producers working with artists from five very different genres: Pretty Lights got country with Leann Rimes and Ralph Stanley; DJ Premeire joined Nas for a composition with the Berklee School of Music Orchestra; digital masterminds the Crystal Method spent two days in Detroit recording an R&B number with Martha Reeves; and super producer, Mark Ronson recruited Erykah Badu along with some members of the Dap Kings to join Trombone Shorty in his home town of New Orleans for a jazz tune.

John Hillcoat and Nick Cave have been joined at the hip ever since the director's first film "Ghosts... of the Civil Dead" (which also starred the Bad Seed) but with "The Wettest County" it looks like the musician--who is again taking on writing and scoring duties--will be getting some help on the soundtrack. Cmt reveals that 84 year-old bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley has recorded three songs for the upcoming film. It seems that Hillcoat is going for some musical authenticity in the Prohibition-era tale led by Tom Hardy, Shia Laboeuf and Jason Clarke as the Bondurant brothers who run a…...

Last October, T Bone Burnett, the legendary Grammy and Oscar-winning musician/producer, put together a colossal benefit concert at New York’s Beacon Theatre in support of The Participant Foundation’s efforts in arts education. The all-star line up included Elton John, Elvis Costello, Leon Russell, John Mellencamp, Gregg Allman, Ralph Stanley, Jeff Bridges, Neko Case, Jim James, Punch Brothers, Karen Elson and The Secret Sisters. One year later, Shout! Factory has assembled the recordings from that night for T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue, and as with the show, proceeds from the record will go to The Participant Foundation....

22 December 2000: Number 49 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of world and folk music
The soundtrack that awoke the Us to a musical heritage it had forgotten it owned. Released in late 2000, the Coen brothers' depression-era romp about three escaped convicts – a revisioning of Homer's epic poem The Odyssey in the deep south of 1930s America – came with a rich showcase of antique folk and country assembled by producer T-Bone Burnett. Packed with gorgeous gospel from Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch, plaintive bluegrass from veteran Ralph Stanley, and lovable vintage such as Big Rock Candy Mountain, the album went on to sell more than 7m copies in the Us alone.

For most of his Hollywood career, Scott Cooper has been known as an actor. He thought he was dreaming when he decided he wanted to direct his first film about the life of a down and out country singer with such stars as Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall, and the famous composer T Bone Burnett. But his ambition paid off. Crazy Heart, stars Bridges, Duvall, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Colin Farrell as well as music by T Bone Burnett. Bridges and Farrell even sing their own ballads. Based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Cobb, Crazy Heart follows the life of alcoholic, country western has-been Bad Blake. After meeting a journalist who makes him see what he has become, he attempts to reform. The movie, which had been made for about $7 million by Country Music Television, a unit of Viacom, very nearly did not find a distributor after Paramount...
