Votes: 2,101,274 | Gross: $188.02M

Given the perspective of a father going on a mission and may never see his children again, this movie is heartbreaking. The scene where he leaves for space always gets me. Such a perspective was an eye opener.

3. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

PG-13 | 103 min | Drama

Director: Stephen Chbosky | Stars: Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Paul Rudd

Votes: 548,160 | Gross: $17.74M

This was an emotional roller coaster for me. I saw some reviews mention that this is the movie for the teens who never had a prom, like me. It was the friendliness and emotional support provided to the protagonist that astonishes me. I don't know if I would have been so willing at their age.

4. Juno (2007)

PG-13 | 96 min | Comedy, Drama

81 Metascore

Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, an offbeat young woman makes a selfless decision regarding the unborn child.

Director: Jason Reitman | Stars: Elliot Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman

Votes: 549,341 | Gross: $143.50M

Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, this is a must see. Abortion is no easy subject to tackle and this movie did an excellent job of showing the difficulty of any such decision without being judgmental or graphic.

5. I, Robot (2004)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Mystery, Sci-Fi

59 Metascore

In 2035, a technophobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity.

Director: Alex Proyas | Stars: Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, Alan Tudyk

Votes: 575,608 | Gross: $144.80M

I love technology, and the reliance on technology in this film is shown to be an ultimatum. The decision to incorporate technology into every aspect of daily life must be taken carefully.

6. Ex Machina (2014)

78 Metascore

A young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.

Wow, I had never thought that much about the Turing test, and it was boggling to see it portrayed so vividly.

7. The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

61 Metascore

A young man, falsely imprisoned by his jealous "friend", escapes and uses a hidden treasure to exact his revenge.

Director: Kevin Reynolds | Stars: Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce, Christopher Adamson, JB Blanc

Votes: 148,511 | Gross: $54.23M

Justice and revenge seem such fine lines to walk, yet here Edmond Dantes seeks vengeance and is granted justice. An interesting tale about an interesting dilemma of the dichotomy of justice vs. revenge.

8. V for Vendetta (2005)

R | 132 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

In a future British dystopian society, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow the tyrannical government - with the help of a young woman.

Director: James McTeigue | Stars: Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Rupert Graves, Stephen Rea

Votes: 1,179,584 | Gross: $70.51M

The simple tagline: "the government should fear the people, not the people fear the government" captures the interesting perspective of this movie. It is not a call for anarchy or an overthrow of the government, but it is a call to action to work to see the government realized as it should be.

9. Gladiator (2000)

R | 155 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

67 Metascore

A former Roman General sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed

Votes: 1,620,781 | Gross: $187.71M

Another movie about vengeance over and against that which could be seen as evil. Was the fight against the Roman emperor justified?

10. Fight Club (1999)

R | 139 min | Drama

67 Metascore

An insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Meat Loaf, Zach Grenier

Votes: 2,324,949 | Gross: $37.03M

A lot of people miss how noteworthy the message of this movie is: a fight against commercialism and being owned by that which you think you own. Unfortunately, such a message is lost on those who are comfortably well off.

11. Anne of Green Gables (1985)

TV-G | 100 min | Drama, Family

An orphan girl, sent to an elderly brother and sister by mistake, charms her new home and community with her fiery spirit and imagination.

Stars: Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst, Richard Farnsworth, Patricia Hamilton

Votes: 22,661

I love this movie for its simple message of a simple and quiet life can still be fulfilling and meaningful. Too often we caught up in glamour and fame and miss the small things that are more important.

12. Django Unchained (2012)

R | 165 min | Drama, Western

81 Metascore

With the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington

Votes: 1,695,894 | Gross: $162.81M

Here there be two important messages: the equality of humanity and the fight against injustice, both portrayed by Dr. King Shultz. If the horror of the slave trade taught us one thing, it is that all humans are equal in value, not to be mistreated because of a mere difference.

13. Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

G | 181 min | Drama, Family, Musical

67 Metascore

In pre-revolutionary Russia, a Jewish peasant with traditional values contends with marrying off three of his daughters with modern romantic ideals while growing anti-Semitic sentiment threatens his village.

Director: Norman Jewison | Stars: Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey, Molly Picon

Votes: 47,889 | Gross: $80.50M

I think the scene/message that most struck me is where the second daughter plans to leave her family to seek her chances with her fiance in Siberia. Such a commitment was inspiring.

14. La La Land (2016)

Votes: 671,870 | Gross: $151.10M

Here we have two protagonists each pursuing their own dream and realizing that such pursuits will unintentionally push them apart. This is both a tragedy and sweet movie.

15. Shutter Island (2010)

R | 138 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

63 Metascore

Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place.

Votes: 1,457,430 | Gross: $128.01M

How can any of us trust who we are apart from those around us that help us see who is the real monster? And are we going to continue to live as a monster or fictionalize ourselves as the hero?

16. Her (2013)

91 Metascore

In a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.

Director: Spike Jonze | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara

Votes: 669,852 | Gross: $25.57M

What a ride! This was an amazing movie investigating what it would be like to absolve our loneliness with the emotional connection with an AI. I can't imagine how this would be good for us as a society and yet is surprisingly appealing.
