In “Friendship,” suburban dad Craig (Robinson) falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor (Rudd), as Craig’s attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives. Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra and Billy Bryk also star. Andrew DeYoung wrote and directed “Friendship” in his feature debut.
The comedy first premiered on Sept. 8, 2024 at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of its Midnight Madness section. A24 acquired the film a week later, following strong reviews out of the fest.

The Lonely Island returned to "Saturday Night Live" with a brand new digital short, and it's perfect.
For weird little guys across the world, this is a huge moment. The Lonely Island — made up of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone — used to provide digital shorts nearly every Saturday night during their run on "SNL" (Samberg was a cast member and Schaffer and Taccone worked on the writing team but often appeared in the pre-taped sketches). Samberg left the show in 2012, but the trio — who still work together all the time — kept providing shorts here and there, like "Yolo" in 2013 (with an assist from Adam Levine and Kendrick Lamar) and "Natalie's Rap 2," which reunited Schaffer, Samberg, and Taccone with Natalie Portman after their first short together in 2006. The latter was in 2018, so it's been six long years since we all got a Digital Short.

A24 has landed rights to “Friendship,” a comedy starring Tim Robinson of “I Think You Should Leave” fame and Paul Rudd. The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness program.
Andrew DeYoung wrote and directed “Friendship” in his feature debut. Channeling the cringe comedy of “I Think You Should Leave,” Robinson plays a suburban dad who obsessively pursues a bond with his charming neighbor (Rudd). Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra and Billy Bryk also appear in the film.
“Friendship” is Robinson’s first starring role in a movie. Rudd is known for comedies like “Anchorman,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Clueless” and “I Love You, Man.” DeYoung has directed episodes of “The Other Two,” “Pen15,” “High Fidelity” and “Our Flag Means Death.”

It doesn’t sound like HBO thinks Tim Robinson should leave, after all. In fact, the premium network just ordered a new series from the comedian, titled “The Chair Company.”
The half-hour comedy, which was granted a pilot order in April, follows a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson), who finds himself “investigating a far-reaching conspiracy” after an embarrassing incident at work.
Robinson and Zach Kanin, who created “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” together, will serve as writers and executive producers for “The Chair Company.” Adam McKay and Todd Schulman also executive produce for HyperObject Industries, with Igor Srubshchik serving as an EP and Andrew DeYoung directing and executive producing the pilot.
The supporting cast for the series includes Lake Bell as Barb Trosper, Sophia Lillis as Natalie Trosper, Will Price as Seth Trosper and Joseph Tudisco as Mike Santini. Lou Diamond Phillips also guest stars in...

Seth Meyers welcomed as a guest one of the first writers ever hired on “Late Night” on Tuesday, and if you know anything about Conner O’Malley, the interview was as blissfully strange as expected.
A comedian and writer who has appeared in films like “Palm Springs” and “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and shows like “Joe Pera Talks With You” and “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson,” O’Malley carved out a niche of what one might reasonably call “insane” comedy with short and long-form videos on YouTube. His missives are essentially dark web-adjacent as he often films himself traipsing around New York City with hilariously seedy screeds.
So it comes as no surprise that A. He did not disappoint when he sat down with Meyers on Tuesday and B. Meyers was delighted to indulge O’Malley’s twisted sense of humor.

‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.
This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.
The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.
Big winners on the film side included “American Fiction” writer Cord Jefferson,...

Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Kate Mara (Class of ’09) have been set to star in Friendship, a new comedy from Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures.
Pic centers on Craig Waterman (Robinson), who enjoys his life. He likes New Balance shoes, Subway sandwiches, and Marvel movies. He lives in the suburbs with his wife, Tami, and son, Steven. He’s happy to work at Universal Digital, a company that helps brands make their products more habit-forming. Craig sees no reason to change anything or make new friends… until weatherman Brian moves into the neighborhood. Mysterious yet friendly, macho but vulnerable, Brian (Rudd) transforms everything for Craig, but Craig’s obsessive and childlike nature threatens to ruin the friendship, and possibly everything else in his life.
Friendship is the first feature from director Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the script and is exec producing alongside Tracy Rosenblum.

There’s “HBO Max” and then there’s everyone else.
On the backs of Succession and The Last of Us, HBO and its streaming counterpart Max led the list of winners at Monday’s 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. While the TV Academy ceased breaking out wins by platform, The Hollywood Reporter tallied up all the trophies from two nights of Creative Emmys as well as the Primetime ceremony and the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed HBO and Max easily topped rival Netflix with 31 statuettes.
Streaming giant Netflix finished second — again — with 22 wins thanks in large part to Beef’s sweep of the limited series category. John Landgraf’s Disney-backed cable network FX delivered an impressive year with 16 wins, with The Bear sweeping in the comedy category and leading all winners in awards that represent TV’s best from 2023. After years of turning in memorable comedic performances, Sam Richardson is angling to nab his first career Emmy Award. He has the chance to do it this year with his nomination for Best Comedy Guest Actor for playing Ghanaian billionaire Edwin Akufo on the Apple TV hit, “Ted Lasso.”
Richardson’s nominated episode is “International Break.” Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) goes to his restaurant to find it empty, despite having a full slate of reservations for the night. Akufo reveals himself and shows that his grudge against Sam is still alive through constant belittling and insults. He tells Sam that he still plans on destroying his life by opening a better Nigerian restaurant nearby and that he kept Sam off the Nigerian national team by writing a substantial check to the country’s government in exchange for blacklisting Sam.

Matt Rife has set a new comedy special at Netflix. Titled “Natural Selection,” the hour-long stand-up set will premiere later in 2023.
Per the logline, the special sees Rife “leave no topic untouched — from crystals to social media trolls — and no audience member spared.”
“Natural Selection” will be taped at Dar Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C on Sept. 22 and 23 as a part of Rife’s “ProbleMattic World Tour.” The special is executive produced by Rife and Christina Shams, and hails from Irony Point, the production company behind comedy titles such as “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson,” “Inside Amy Schumer” and “That Damn Michael Che.”
Rife rose to prominence as a comedian thanks to viral social media content, particularly on TikTok, where he is the platform’s most watched comedian. Additionally, before “Natural Selection,” he self-produced and distributed three comedy specials via YouTube: “Only Fans,” “Matthew Steven Rife” and “Walking Red Flag.

“Succession” ruled the 39th Television Critics Association Awards with two wins, including the top prize, Program of the Year.
It’s the first time the HBO hit has won TCA’s most prestigious award after bids in 2020 and 2022. “Succession” also won drama series for the third time, following victories in 2020 and 2022, to join “The Americans,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” “Lost” and “Mad Men” as three-time champs in the category (“The Sopranos” holds the record with four wins). This means that “Succession” has won drama series for three of its four seasons, having only lost on its first nomination in 2019 to “Better Call Saul.”
Along with “The Last of Us” and “The Bear,” “Succession” co-led nominations with five bids. Its other three nominations were in Individual Achievement in Drama for Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Jeremy Strong, making it the third show to score three spots in the category after...

HBO’s “Succession” was a critical darling, so it’s probably befitting that the show would end its run with two final lauds from the Television Critics Assn. The 39th Annual TCA Awards — which canceled its in-person event this year due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes — released its list of winners on Monday, with “Succession” grabbing the prizes for program of the year, as well as outstanding achievement in drama (an award it also won in 2022 and 2020).
Other major winners included FX’s “The Bear,” which airs on Hulu. The series’ first season was honored as outstanding new program, as well as outstanding achievement in comedy. The TCA spread the wealth when it comes to individual achievements, honoring “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn in drama, and “Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne in comedy.

While “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” seems to get all of the memes and dominate the social media discourse with each new season, HBO’s “How To with John Wilson” is another example of alternative comedy done in a brilliant way. Where Tim Robinson might hit you over the head with a frenetic pace and outlandish situations, John Wilson is the awkward narrator of your journey through the heart of New York City, showing just how the mundane can be hilarious.

The final seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and (maybe-probably) Ted Lasso got the cold shoulder from the Television Critics Assoc., which honored the Emmy-winning pair with a total of zero TCA Award nominations.
By contrast, Succession‘s swan song scored a leading five nods, putting the Roy family in a three-way tie with fellow HBO drama The Last of Us and Hulu’s breakout hit The Bear.

The eligibility window for this year’s Emmys cycle closed May 31. The hanging episode rule has gone the way of Barry Berkman, which means this week’s TV awards contenders to watch are kind of an odd bunch: mostly episodes that aired earlier in the week or currently airing shows whose full seasons won’t be eligible. But you don’t care about that — you just want to know what shows are worth watching.
A nominee in 2022 for Best Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, the extremely memeable sketch comedy “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” returned to Netflix for its highly anticipated third season on May 30, making its six episodes eligible for this year’s awards cycle. Just because the week is shorter, doesn’t mean that there’s any less stellar programming on the horizon, with new seasons of “I Think You Should Leave,” “Dark Side of the Ring,” “Nancy Drew” and “Painting with John,” plus the series finales of “Barry” and “Succession.” And that’s to say nothing of a ripped-from-the-headlines HBO movie (starring Sydney Sweeney no less), a documentary about the American Gladiators and a LeBron James biopic. A jam-packed week, even with one fewer day!

Emmy winner Tim Robinson is back for more cringe, bizarre and surreal antics, with the trailer for "I Think You Should Leave" season 3 giving us a peek at the myriad sketches and the guest stars that will be part of the third six-episode batch of the Netflix series. And it carries the same weird energy that we've come to expect from Robinson's sketch comedy series. The series has become something akin to a cultural phenomenon, full of endlessly quotable lines that work their way into people's everyday vocabulary. Which means the new season will provide viewers with even more lines to quote out of context.

John Early has set his first HBO special with “Now More Than Ever,” a stand-up comedy hour in the style of a “gritty ’70s rockumentary.”
Airing on HBO and available to stream on HBO Max on June 17, the special will feature “stand-up and explosive song covers from Britney to Neil Young, intercut with Spinal Tap-esque backstage sketches.”
Among his other credits including “Would It Kill You to Laugh?” and “Search Party,” Early is known for whipping out his famous Britney Spears impression on late night television. Perhaps he’ll reprise his rendition of “Lucky” or Spears’ lesser-known Christmas song “My Only Wish (This Year)” in the special.
“I am so excited to finally come out to the world as the lead singer of my band John Early and The Lemon Squares,” Early said in a statement. “I had the time of my life singing some of my favorite songs...

Austin, Texas — Patton Oswalt, Phoebe Robinson, Eric Andre, Chelsea Handler and others were in fine form on Friday night as Variety helped kick off the 2023 SXSW festival and conference with its Power of Comedy event.
The kudos pay tribute to innovators in the business of being funny. Presenters and honorees who gathered at the Creek and the Cave nightclub in downtown Austin made mention of comedians facing a fraught moment as social norms and cultural attitudes are changing.
Mike Lawrence, who tag-teamed with Nick Thune as host for the night, noted that he had to show more identification when registering to get his SXSW conference badge than he would have to buy a gun.
“In Texas it’s harder to get a festival badge than to get a gun,” Lawrence said. “Go to a gun store and tell them ‘I hate Jews,’ you get a gun. Go to registration and say ‘I’m an artist.

The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.

Tig Notaro was supposed to host the ceremony, but Cameron Esposito stepped in after Notaro tested positive for Covid-19, Esposito told the audience. Esposito noted that she got the last-minute call over the weekend and flew to Los Angeles earlier Sunday to host the show, where awards were handed out in the streaming categories.
“I can’t believe you were able to squeeze these awards into two days,” Esposito joked, noting that the streaming shows are the only TV programs she actually watches, before noting she had written her monologue in one hour. (Esposito goes by both she/her and they/them pronouns.)

This story about “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Odds are you haven’t watched the best show on television. It’s possible you haven’t even heard of it. After all, in the world of peak TV, how could a small, short-form sketch comedy series possibly compare to the big names and bigger budgets? But Netflix’s cult hit “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” is an intensely strange, often uproarious series that might very well be the most humane and disturbing reflection of our troubled times.
Created by Robinson and Zach Kanin, “I Think You Should Leave” has produced two seasons of six episodes each, with shows running around 15 minutes. Netflix entered the show in the short form categories this year, as opposed to the variety-sketch category as it...

As the number of major late-night shows continue to shrink, so does the Television Academy’s window to figure out how to handle the variety talk and variety sketch categories. After the org faced massive blowback in 2020 when it attempted to re-merge talk and sketch (reversing that plan after producers cried foul), it has resisted making any more changes. But given the monumental shift going on in the genre, the Academy will have no choice but map out new rules for 2023.
The recent, tremendously disappointing news that “Desus & Mero” and “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” — two of the few late-night shows not hosted by middle-aged white dudes — have officially ended, further shrinks next year’s Emmy submission pool. Technically, “Full Frontal” can compete for next year’s trophies due to the fact four episodes aired in June, but the odds are probably not in her favor: “Conan” did not...

There is nothing elementary about “Abbott Elementary’s” performance at the 38th Television Critics Association Awards. The ABC sitcom won four prizes, including Program of the Year.
“Abbott,” which led with five nominations, defeated “Better Call Saul,” “Hacks,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” “Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “Yellowjackets” for the top award. It also won comedy series, new program and Individual Achievement in Comedy for creator, writer and star Quinta Brunson. Its fifth nomination was in that same category for breakout Janelle James, so technically “Abbott” did not lose any category in which it was nominated. It is the second show in three years to win four awards after “Watchmen” went four for four in 2020.
The TCA Awards were supposed to return to an in-person ceremony this year, hosted by James and her “Abbott” co-stars Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lisa Ann Walters, but the entire TCA summer press tour went virtual again due to the BA.

With five nods, “Abbott Elementary” was the most-nominated series at this year’s Television Critics Awards. The hit comedy is going home with four wins, including the top prize: program of the year.
This makes “Abbott” not only the TCA’s biggest winner this year, but the only series to receive more than one award. (The only nomination the show didn’t win for was Janelle James in the individual achievement in comedy category — because she lost to “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson.)
The TCA consists of more than 200 professional journalists covering television. The organization announced the winners of the 38th annual TCA Awards on Saturday.
Mandy Moore won in the drama individual achievement category for her work in the fifth and final season of NBC’s “This Is Us,” which was shut out of this year’s Emmy nominations. Another highlight was the award for talk, variety and sketch shows,...

Although the feature film “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” was released on Disney+ and not in theaters, director Akiva Schaffer knows the importance of seeing a movie with an audience, as proven by the film’s tastemakers screening at the D23 conference and its L.A. world premiere.
“At home, it’s so easy to have a look at your phone,” he tells Variety. “You can miss half the things because they’re visual in the movie, but then again, as somebody who’s put out those movies and had nobody in the theaters, that’s not any good either.”
He’s referencing the poor box-office performance of his last feature, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (2016), which he directed and starred in along with the other two members of musical trio the Lonely Island: Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. Since then, the film has garnered a cult following.
