HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys sent a memo to employees this afternoon, explaining the decision by Warner Bros. Discovery to layoff 70 employees, or 14 of his workforce, as the company restructures. The move, announced the morning, comes as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into one streamer — with the decision made to reduce redundancies in unscripted programming. But a changing business model also led to cuts in scripted children’s and family fare, casting, international and acquisitions.
“Unfortunately, the environment in which we operate is changing rapidly, and it is up to us to continue to refine our model to chart a course for long term success,” he wrote in the memo. “As you heard from David Zaslav during our last earnings call, producing top-tier HBO/Max scripted content is crucial to Wbd’s future. Part of this process involves an honest assessment of what we need moving forward.

At the end of a day that saw about 70 (14) staffers in his divisions getting laid off, Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO & HBO Max, just sent an email to his team about the cuts as well as his new (old) senior HBO/Max scripted executive team of Amy Gravitt, Francesca Orsi and Sarah Aubrey, which includes new responsibilities for Gravitt and Aubrey.
In the memo (read it in full below), Bloys lays out the responsibilities for his top executives on the scripted and documentary side who are staying on and also highlights the accomplishments of the top executives who are leaving as a result of the layoffs: Jennifer O’Connell, Jennifer Kim; Michael Quigley and Linda Lowy.
“Although I am confident these structural changes will allow us to sustain a thriving business model, these decisions have been extremely painful to make,” Bloys wrote. “We operate in an environment where we...

There are so many reasons for Hunger Games fans to break out the goat cheese and fresh-baked bread today! First of all, tonight’s the premiere, and your favorite professional fans VH1 News will be there, so tweet us your questions for Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and the rest @TheFablife or write them in the comments below. Also, there’s a brand-new clip on MTVNews.com today: Peeta Mellark’s (Hutcherson) momentous interview with Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci). Unlike last week’s clip of Cinna and Katniss, this one’s quite faithful to the book. Those of us who have it memorized can appreciate the nuances of Josh’s performance. We studied it closely and decided Peeta could teach a course or two in public relations. Here’s how he won the audience over, in 10 faces or less.

Chicago – Young love isn’t just crazy, it’s also often pretty stupid. How else to explain a decision to break the law just to spend more time with the man you love? Such is the decision made by Anna (gorgeous newcomer Felicity Jones) when she sends her young love spiralling in “Like Crazy,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. The talented young cast elevate a daring-but-often-frustrating script. Whatever problems the film may have, see it for Jones, Anton Yelchin, and Jennifer Lawrence, giving three of the best performances of their generation in 2011.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Yelchin plays Jacob, the American who falls in love with the Brit college student studying in the States. When she decides to stay past her visa to enjoy a summer of young love, their potential affair is turned upside down. She’s not allowed to return after going back to England and gets caught up in neverending red tape.

Last week, we left off with Emma telling Mads that she isn't Sutton. I had worried how Mads would take this kind of news, but tonight's episode, "No Country for Young Love," showed me that she took it surprisingly well. Derek's murderer is revealed, and I think even more that Thayer likes Emma after he grabs her hand and tells her that no matter what happens he is there for her! Aww! I love Thayer!

Young love can be so fickle. It’s all die-hard one day and die-now the next. Fortunately, the latter has not been quite so acrimonious with this fledgling, now-ex couple. Chord Overstreet and Emma Roberts have broken up after seeing each other for nine months. It’s not a dramatic split, says a source, revealing, “They’re just on two different paths in life. They just grew apart and decided to part ways.” That’s pretty zen of them, but it’s still sad. Having said that, the good news is that they’re both young and very hot. Things will be just fine for the two of them, just wait and see. Hotter and as-young things are just waiting around the corner.

The Descendants (15)
(Alexander Payne, 2011, Us) George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause, Robert Forster. 115 mins
A sideways move from Sideways takes Payne on another tour of masculine crises, though this has mellowed and matured for longer. Family issues jolt Clooney out of his Hawaiian comfort zone. His wife's sudden coma puts him in charge of their two daughters, and brings their marriage into perspective, while his control of the ancestral estate adds to the burden. It's a well-rooted drama of great performances and big themes (and probably big awards).
Like Crazy (12A)
(Drake Doremus, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence. 90 mins
Young love sees no colour, but it must abide by visa regulations in this cross-Atlantic romantic saga, which tests a couple's endurance in an offbeat, indie style.
The Grey (15)
(Joe Carnahan, 2012, Us) Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo. 117 mins
Liam Neeson v wolves – seems like a good match.

They Live by Night
Directed by Nicholas Ray
Screenplay by Charles Schnee
U.S.A., 1949
Young love is a powerful thing, even dangerously so when it blinds people from reality. When the hearts of two youths are intertwined as they are between the protagonists in They Live by Night, a sense of invincibility can slowly and surely take over all the senses. Just as the emotions blindly dictate the lovers’ conduct, the stark realities of their real world circumstances inexorably drag them closer to impending doom. What better material for a brilliant young director to explore for in a debut. If at the time the name Nicholas Ray did not stir the passions of movie connoisseurs, They Live by Night and its tragic love story certainly planted the seeds of many great things that would follow.
Somewhere in the state of Mississippi, a trio of dangerous criminals have escaped the penitentiary.

One of the last of the founding fathers of comic books, writer/editor/artist/publisher Joe Simon, died yesterday at the age of 98.
Joe was the first editor at Marvel Comics, then called Timely Comics. After creating Captain America with artist Jack Kirby, the team moved over to DC Comics to create the Guardian and the Newsboy Legion, the Boy Commandos, and Manhunter and take over the Sandman feature. The “Simon and Kirby” team were the first to receive regular cover credit. In the past several years, both Marvel and DC has reprinted all of this material in hardcover.
After World War II, the team reunited to form their own comics imprints, Prize Comics and Mainline Publications. In those endeavors they created the romance comic (Young Romance) and published titles including Boys’ Ranch, Black Magic, Bullseye, Foxhole, In Love, Police Trap and Young Love. Leverage’s season of consequences continues this Sunday. After years of what executive producer Dean Devlin calls “playing Robin Hood,” the team will, by the end of the season, feel the after effects. “Throughout the season we tried to bring back, ‘what happens when you play with fire?’ And it’s all going to culminate with the season finale,” he said.
Before then, the next batch of episodes, beginning Nov. 27, will build on the introduction of Latimer, the investor who has been using to the team’s outcomes to make himself a lot of money. “We’re going to allow...

Like Crazy
Directed by: Drake Doremus
Cast: Felicity Jones, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence
Running Time:
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: November 11, 2011
Plot: A British college student (Jones) falls in love with an American (Yelchin), but problems with her visa separate them and now they must try to figure out exactly what they have together.
Who’S It For? If you like your film romances with a realistic/authentic slant, that should be enough for you to enjoy this film.
Expectations: I knew nothing about this film except Yelchin was in it. While that didn’t have me sold, I have liked just about everything he’s done.
Read Nick Allen’s interview with Jones & Yelchin
Overall

You may want to cover your ears, Beliebers. I mean, ignorance is bliss, right? We all knew they were dating, but did anybody think it was for real real? As in, dropping the L-word real?
Justin recently dished about being in Luv (is that how teens spell it?) and even threw in a few reasons to back it up. Maybe he’s more serious than we thought?
"I wouldn’t be with somebody if I wasn’t in love. Everybody can see she is hot and that’s great, but there is so much more to her than that. She makes me laugh and she puts up with my practical jokes. We were both raised by our moms in single-parent households, and that’s given us a lot of the same family values in life,” he said.
Dare I say I sense a bit of maturity there? Justin wouldn’t...

Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore ponder the possibilities in The Art of Getting By.
The Art of Getting By is a coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama film starring Emma Roberts (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) and Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) set against the backdrop of very beautiful New York City.
The movie spins the tale of George (Highmore), a lonely and fatalistic high school teen who’s made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, and Sally (Roberts), a popular but complicated gal who recognizes in him a kindred spirit. Might there be love in the air? Or maybe just a deep friendship and mutual respect?
Directed by Gavin Wiesen, The Art of Getting By offers a healthy roster of co-stars, including Rita Wilson...

Jason Derulo is hot property. Jordin Sparks is hot property. And now, they’ve consolidated that hotness, people. In news that made us make noises that sounded suspiciously like ‘Awww’, Jordin and Jason are dating! The young couple celebrated Jason’s 22nd birthday day before yesterday night, even though his birthday was on September 21. But since he was on tour in Europe on the day, he made sure he got some time with his new main squeeze upon his return.
The belated birthday date went down at Phillipe Chow in Hollywood but it wasn’t one-to-one. They also invited friends and music industry executives. A source who was at the party revealed, “Jordin would sing to him occasionally through the night in his ear if her head was nested on his shoulder. He was excited to spend some [quality time] with Jordin in La. … The two left together and continued the celebration.

Mat Kearney’s new album, “Young Love,” is available now and this time around he approached song writing a little differently. For example, with his current hit single, “Hey Mama,” he started it out with claps, stomps while dancing around his room, singing the hook. Sounds pretty simple, huh? Well we surely think so because the inspiration behind “Hey Mama,” as well as Mat’s giddiness was none other than his wife whom he met at a clothing store. Mat got hitched earlier this year and believe it or not, his wife wasn’t interested in Mat at first…it actually took a little coaxing. The funny part of the story was that she didn’t even know who Mat was until a month into dating and that was quite charming to him. In the end, he got the girl! According to Mat, “Young Love” is inspired by a lot...

Young love ruled the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez had the ultimate date night, and the entire world was watching.
It all kicked off when the black-carpet Vma Pre-Show started on Sunday (August 28); the couple's adorableness would have viewers "awww"-ing throughout the night. Gomez, who was doing a stint as the pre-show co-host, spoke to a number of celebrities, including Britney Spears and bestie Demi Lovato, but things really got interesting when the Biebs showed up.
Bieber -- wearing glasses, red pants, leopard-print kicks and a tuxedo jacket -- stopped to chat with Gomez, who was decked out in a lacey black mini-dress.
"I have a snake. I have red pants and cheetah shoes.

Justin Bieber took to the MTV Vma red carpet on Sunday night holding his tiny snake Johnson.
No, that's not some weird, creepy euphemism. That's really the snake's name. With a very special tribute to Britney Spears scheduled for the big awards show, we're guessing that Bieber wanted to throw in his own nod to the queen of pop.
Since Bieb's girlfriend Selena Gomez was interviewing celebs on the carpet, we were treated to that awkward moment where she tried to be professional while he teased her with Johnson. "What are you wearing?" she asked.
"I have a snake," he replied, waving it at her, as she squealed, "Stop! I know!"
She regained her composure as she asked him about performers Kanye West and Jay Z, but after she said, "Thank you for hanging out, babe," Bieb got his Pda on with a big smooch on the cheek. Aww. Young love.

The Throne will get a royal reception on the Billboard 200 albums charts next week. Watch the Throne, the superstar hookup between Kanye West and Jay-z, sold more than 436,000 copies in its first week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, putting up the second-biggest debut sales week of the year so far, behind Lady Gaga's Born This Way, which moved 1.1 million.
Thanks to a three-day iTunes exclusive that launched last Monday (August 8-10), the pair also reportedly broke the record for the biggest iTunes debut ever, selling almost 290,000 digital copies, enough to beat out former record-holder Coldplay's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which sold 282,000 copies in 2008. According to Billboard, with 321,000 total downloads, Throne is second only to Born This Way (662,000) for the biggest digital week ever.

Adele is making it look like the good-old days when people actually bought music. In an era where #1 albums often suffer big drop-offs in their second and third weeks, hanging around but rarely returning to the top, the British songbird will be back in the #1 slot for the 12th time after selling another 76,000 copies of 21.
The "Rolling in the Deep" star is on the precipice of crossing the 3 million sold mark, easily regaining her familiar position by flip-flopping with last week's top dog, country singer Eric Church's Chief, which lost 63 percent of its business as sales slid down to 53,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
Fellow country singer Trace Adkins is just behind, debuting at #3 with Proud to Be Here (47,000), with singer/songwriter Mat Kearney's Young Love in at #4 (44,000) and...

Young love is already a frenzied cauldron of emotions, but young long distance love is whole other kettle of fish (or ball of wax) with geographic and heartache adding another sense of heightened feeling to a relationship. And so enters the Sundance hit "Like Crazy," the low key romancer starring Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones which walked away from Park City with the Grand Jury Prize for director Drake Doremus and Special Jury Prize for Felicity Jones. A trailer has now landed for the film and it's mostly pretty good. The two leads--and yes, that's Jennifer Lawerence in a small…...

I was just talking about past Summer vacations with a friend, those were the days. The question from the trailer from The Myth of the American Sleepover “when did your summer end” is sad if you think about it. Carefree summers are no more if your an adult with responsibilities and priorities, but as a kid it was the best time of your life.
Young love is what we are looking at with first-time director David Robert Mitchell‘s coming-of-age drama The Myth of the American Sleepover. The film follows four young people on the last night of summer – their final night of freedom before the new school year starts. The teenagers cross paths as they explore the suburban wonderland they inhabit in search of love and adventure. Watch the trailer below.

They’re young, they’re talented, they’re cute and they’re in love. And yes, this pair is doing so much right in managing their relationship — they could even Last!
Ever since Justin Bieber, 17, finished his world tour on May 19 in Japan, he and his paramour, Selena Gomez, 18, have been superglued together.
First, they took the major step of going public as a couple, attending the Billboard Awards, on May 22, together and giving their first nationally publicized kiss, after Justin landed the Top New Artist award.
The pair clearly had thought long and hard about coming out as a couple. While refusing for months to publicly acknowledge that they were dating, they nevertheless were photographed sweetly holding hands at the Vanity Fair Oscars party where she was even pictured sitting on his lap!
Whether it was fear of the wrath of Justin‘s fans, or just fear of publicity about their relationship itself,...

The Billboard Music Awards took over Las Vegas last night with a star-studded turnout. The event was full of exciting moments that started with fashion-filled red-carpet appearances from Fergie, Nicole Kidman, and others, and continued inside during the show. Britney Spears took the stage twice for provocative performances with Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, while Beyoncé Knowles belted out "Run the World (Girls)" and thanked Jay-z after accepting the Millennium Award. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez surprised the audience with two sweet kisses, but we want to know - what was your favorite moment during the Billboard Awards? What Was Your Favorite Moment From the Billboard Music Awards? Justin and Selena's kiss - Young love is too cute! Britney's performances - Double the Brit was twice the fun. How sad it must be for the two young lovahs to be apart. Justin Bieber‘s across the pond from Selena Gomez right now and he clearly wishes she was around. We know we have to say she’s his “alleged” girlfriend because they’ve never come out and said it outright. But actions do speak louder than words, like when they showed up together for theVanity Fair Oscar party. Or when Bieber and Gomez were photographed sneaking kisses.
Having said that, we feel your pain Biebs! A lovelorn Justin tweeted Selena Sunday, writing, “I miss you.” Selena tweeted him right back with, “I miss all of y’all“. Young love, if anything, is quite succinct. But still very sweet, no? Hang in there, guys! You’ll be reunited in no time!

Oh, to be young and in love. Whenever I think of young love, the same quote always seems to pop into my head: “Young love. Full of promise, full of hope, ignorant of reality.” But the love we explore in Like Crazy between Jacob (Anton Yelchin) and Anna (Felicity Jones) is not exactly ignorant of reality. Jacob and Anna fall for each other while in college, but the catch is Anna is from the UK and her student visa will be up once she graduates. Despite the obvious ticking clock on their relationship, Jacob and Anna succumb to what seems inevitable – they fall in love.

My colleague Anthony Breznican already filled you in on the rapturous audience response to Like Crazy. Count me among the enraptured. There’s a lovely, hard-to-achieve naturalism to this happy/sad story of Jacob the American (Anton Yelchin) and Anna the Brit (Felicity Jones), who meet at college in L.A. while Anna is a visiting student. The two shimmer with transparent radiance as they fall in love — a glow supplied in equal measure by the gorgeous, open performances of the leads and the fine control with which director/co-writer Drake Doremus dramatizes Jacob and Anna’s big romance. Young love...

Muscled lean, smooth, tanned, blonde, blue-eyed, and incredibly handsome, Tab Hunter was the post war Golden Boy, the Brad Pitt of the 50′s. The american actor, singer, former teen idol and author landed a role in the film Island of Desire opposite Linda Darnell. With a fabricated name and extreme good looks, Tab Hunter was never taken seriously as an actor, but his co-starring role as young Marine Danny in 1955′s World War II drama Battle Cry cemented his position as one of Hollywood’s top young romantic leads. An instant success, Tab went on to star in over 50 major motion pictures, including The Pleasure of His Company, That Kind of Woman, Gunman’s Walk, They Came to Cordura, Ride the Wild Surf, The Loved One, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, and the Academy Award-nominated Damn Yankees. Hunter was a number-one box office attraction who dominated the...

Little brother's all grown up! Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) have slowly grown closer during the last few episodes of "The Vampire Diaries," but Bonnie is having some trouble getting past the fact that he's her best friend's kid brother.
There's also the matter of the new kid in town, Luka (Bryton James) who has definitely caught Bonnie's eye. As we learned when she met Carter earlier this season, Bonnie isn't very good at hiding her feelings. True to form, she looks at Luka like a hungry dog looks at steak... or like Katherine looks at Matt.
While Bonnie is struck completely speechless by Luka's mere presence, Jeremy steps up to help him find his way to class. I'm not sure Jeremy will be feeling quite so friendly later, when Luka crashes their pool date at the Grill.
As Nina Dobrev said, Elena is too distracted to...
