Hits from the weekend
Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.
By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.
It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’
Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.
What’s in store for the coming week?
Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).
In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

Update: Though it initially appeared that “The Acolyte” may have had a stronger debut than 2023’s “Ahsoka,” Disney shared that the first episode of its latest Star Wars series reached 11.1 million views in its first five days — almost 3 million short of what “Ahsoka” achieved in the same amount of time. “The Acolyte” still represents Disney+’s biggest series premiere of 2024, however.
Previously: “The Acolyte,” Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, reached 4.8 million views in its first day of availability. This marks the streamer’s biggest series premiere of 2024, according to Disney.
An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte,” though it’s likely that most of “Ahsoka’s” was concentrated in...

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will lead the cast of Netflix’s upcoming thriller series “Man on Fire.” He will also executive produce the project alongside Steven Caple Jr., who has been set as director of the first two episodes under showrunner Kyle Killen.
“Man on Fire” is based on A.J. Quinnell’s first two novels about former French Foreign Legion solider John Creasy, titled “Man on Fire” (1981) and “The Perfect Kill” (1992). This is not the first adaptation of the Quinnell novels; Creasy was played by Denzel Washington in a 2004 “Man on Fire” film and by Scott Glenn in 1987.
The logline for Netflix’s adaptation reads, “Once a high functioning and skilled Special Forces Mercenary, known for surviving even the most desolate of situations, Creasy (Mateen) is now plagued with intense Ptsd. Determined to overcome his personal demons, he sets out on a path to redemption. But, before he can adjust to this new life,...

‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ Delivers a Welcome $56 Millon Haul; ‘The Watchers’ Stumbles in First Weekend
The domestic box office finally changed course after a slow start to the summer release season, as ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ won the weekend with a successful $56 million opening. This is the best R-rated opening in theaters since last year's 'Oppenheimer.' It’s also Will Smith’s sixth-highest domestic opening and the first notable major summer title that over-performed against tracking numbers.
The fourth film in Smith and Martin Lawrence's action franchise was projected to do well, but Hollywood had reasons to temper that optimism. For starters, this was Smith’s first major release after the infamous Oscars slap in 2022, and it wasn’t clear if the fallout would have a lasting impact on his box office marketability. And while the previous installment, ‘Bad Boys for Life,’ was the biggest hit of 2020 with $427 million worldwide, it was also the last hit of 2020 when the global pandemic brought the industry to a screeching halt.
The thriller ‘The Watchers,’ the directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, opened in fourth place to just $7 million, a disappointing debut for a genre film supported by a bankable star in Dakota Fanning and a first-time director with built-in name recognition as the daughter of supernatural hit-maker M. Night Shyamalan.
Chris Pratt’s animated comedy ‘The Garfield Movie’ held in second place in its third week, earning $10 million for a $192 million worldwide total, while another family film—John Krasinski's animated/live-action film ‘IF’—also held its appeal with $8 million in its fourth weekend for a $160 million total worldwide.
It was another rough weekend for ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ as it dropped to sixth place behind ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.’ The 'Mad Max: Fury Road' prequel took in a $4.25 million, a 60% drop from last week, while 'Apes' continued to draw audiences with $5.4 million.
In the top 10 were also re-releases of two The Lord of the Rings movies, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ ($2.44 million) and ‘The Two Towers’ ($1.91 million), which played on 1,529 screens each, capitalizing on audience nostalgia.
Next weekend, all eyes turn to Disney and Pixar to deliver with the release of animated sequel ‘Inside Out 2.’ Hollywood could use another bright spot this summer, and there isn’t another big hit expected until July, with the release of ‘Despicable Me 4’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Last year, Tony Awards producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner had the challenge of putting on the live ceremony without a written script, amid the writer’s strike, with the aid of host Ariana DeBose.
This year, the longtime Tonys producers have the benefit of a script and of working again with DeBose, who choreographed the opening number. They also have a new space, with the Tony Awards taking place in the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater for the first time on June 16, after being held at the United Palace theater in Washington Heights last season and other venues before that.
The change of venues has brought up a certain amount of logistical challenges, and solutions. For example, Weiss, who also serves as director of the ceremony, says the ceremony this year will not have a wall that comes down between production numbers and awards, and instead will...

“Any time your film is called The Smashing Machine, you’re going to kind of get smashed up.” That’s how Dwayne Johnson put it, as he revealed he suffered an injury on his right elbow while filming his new wrestling drama for A24.

He said he will need to have fluid drained before having an Mri to assess the damage.
Johnson stars in The Smashing Machine as Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion. Uncut Gems co-director Benny Safdie wrote and directs the project, which is being positioned as a prestige play for Johnson, who became one of the world’s top movie stars in big budget fare such...

Dwayne Johnson got a little “smashed up” while filming his A24 mixed martial arts movie “The Smashing Machine,” the actor and professional wrestler announced in a video posted to Instagram Tuesday.
“Look at that sucker right there,” Johnson said, showing off his swelled right elbow while standing in his kitchen. “It looks like I have a cantaloupe in the bottom of my elbow. I got banged up pretty good today in our scenes, and there might be some soft tissue damage in there. That’s a lot of fluid, we’ll see. It’s unclear whether production will be delayed. Variety has reached out to A24 for comment.
The actor nevertheless seemed in high spirits while detailing the gnarly injury, recalling advice from his father, the late wrestler Rocky Johnson.

There are a handful of July 4 traditions that are universal: Barbecues, fireworks, and of course the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

“I think it’s time to make movies relevant,” said Ali Abbasi to the cheering crowd at the May 20 Cannes premiere of his Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice. “It’s time to make movies political again.”
Hollywood doesn’t seem to be listening. Despite the enthusiastic response to The Apprentice internationally — the film, starring Sebastian Stan as Trump and Succession’s Jeremy Strong as his master-of-the-dark-arts political mentor Roy Cohn, has been sold in nearly every territory — the movie is still struggling to land a U.S. distributor. That’s despite, as Abbasi calls it, this fall’s “promotional event, the U.S. election,” that would seem to provide an ideal launchpad, and plenty of free publicity, for any domestic distributor.

After suing ESPN for allegedly suspending her in retaliation for comments she made on a podcast regarding the Covid-19 vaccine mandate, former ESPN host Sage Steele has filed a lawsuit against CAA and her agents over their handling of the standoff.
Steele, in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses the agency of breach of fiduciary duty for failing to properly advocate for her. She points to statements from her agent Matthew Kramer, CAA’s co-head of sports media, in which he neglected to demand that Steele not be required to apologize for criticizing Disney’s vaccination policy and lied to the ex-espn anchor about having the “head of CAA legal” review her contract regarding the mandate, instead sending the document to a junior attorney.

When Georgia Hunter first pitched her 2017 book, “We Were the Lucky Ones,” about her Polish ancestors’ fight for survival during the Holocaust, she was told World War II literature was a “saturated” market. This wasn’t meant to dissuade her from pushing forward with their harrowing story, but rather acknowledge that there is never a shortage of novels, films and series trying to reckon with the everlasting wounds of the war.
It was no different when Hunter and producers Thomas Kail and Erica Lipez adapted the book into Hulu’s eight-part limited series, which premiered in March.

The news is bittersweet for fans of the saga between villainous supe Homelander (Antony Starr) and morally gray supe-hunter Butcher (Karl Urban) because while it’s the beginning of the end, it’s also going out exactly as the creator intended it to.

CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach came to the Banff World Media Festival on Tuesday amid unprecedented change in the global industry.
“It’s definitely a time of tumult and change,” Reisenbach said during an informal In Conversation With: series address. “Despite everything that’s going on, we have this fantastic year and we feel like we have all this momentum going into the next season.”
Reisenbach’s appearance in Banff came as CBS Entertainment-parent Paramount Global, the Hollywood studio led by controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, weighs a possible takeover by Skydance and RedBird Capital, or other potential suitors. “I can’t comment on anything regarding M&a. It’s very much above my head,” she said at the outset of her talk.

The revival of Frasier at Paramount+ is bringing in more faces from its title character’s past.
Dan Butler and Edward Hibbert will reprise their roles as, respectively, Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe and Gil Chesterton, Frasier Crane’s (Kelsey Grammer) former co-workers at the Seattle radio station in the original Frasier series, which ran on NBC from 1993-2004. Details on how they come back into Frasier’s life are being kept quiet for now.
“Dan Butler and Edward Hibbert have made an indelible contribution to television, and I am overjoyed to welcome them back to Frasier and for the opportunity to work together once again,” Grammer said in a statement.
Peri Gilpin (who guest-starred in the revival’s first season finale) will reprise her role as Roz in the coming season, where she’ll recur. Patricia Heaton — who starred with Grammer in Fox’s Back to You in 2007-08 — Yvette Nicole Brown,...

The fate of CBS owner Paramount Global remains way up in the air, and the future of broadcast TV in general remains a big question mark. But as CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said on Tuesday at the Banff World Media Festival, that’s not stopping her from plotting her primetime development plans way into the future.

CBS will continue to stay up extra late with After Midnight.
The network has renewed the late-night show, hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson, for a second season in 2024-25. After Midnight is an updated take on @midnight, Comedy Central’s former late-night show, and boasts some of the same creative team.
“Taylor is a gifted comedian who brings a unique voice, energy and plenty of rizz to late night. I learned rizz is a real word thanks to the show,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement. “We’re excited for more of her daily smart takes about the dumbest things on the Internet.”
Like its predecessor, After Midnight features a group of comedians giving their take on the best/worst/weirdest of the internet and social media each day. The show recently added a monologue for Tomlinson that includes her interacting with the studio audience.

Glen Powell is questioning his “whole life now.”
Well, maybe it’s not quite that dramatic, but Hollywood’s movie star of the moment issued a “false alarm” on Monday night after learning that a wild dating cannibal story he’s been sharing for years is an urban legend. His announcement comes after he told it another time to Jake Shane on the influencer’s Therapuss podcast.
“Props to my little sister’s friend who told her this dating story,” Powell posted on X last night. “False alarm. Back rubs are back.”
To back up a bit, Powell relayed the “crazy story” to Shane about a girl who went on a date with a “super charming” guy.
“They have a great night, and she goes back to his apartment that night and he’s like, ‘Hey, can I give you a massage?’ As she got back to his apartment, she started getting weird vibes.

“Inside Out 2” should evoke an emotion that Pixar hasn’t felt about the box office in years: Joy.
The follow-up film to 2015’s cerebral hit “Inside Out” is estimated to score a stellar $80 million to $90 million in its box office debut. If projections hold, it’ll overtake “Dune: Part Two” ($82.5 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million) as the biggest opening of the year.
As this weekend’s only new nationwide release, it’ll have no trouble taking the box office crown from the prior champion, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” The fourth installment in Sony’s buddy-cop comedy, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, launched over the weekend with $56.5 million and should add roughly $28 million in its sophomore outing.
“Inside Out 2” also looks to snap Pixar’s recent cold streak following last summer’s “Elemental” (which scored the worst start in Pixar’s modern history...

Dakota Johnson, her producing partner Ro Donnelly and writer-director Christy Hall were on hand to celebrate the New York premiere of their upcoming film, Daddio, at the Tribeca Festival on Monday night.
The film, which also stars Sean Penn, follows Johnson’s Girlie as she gets in a cab, driven by Penn’s Clark, to take her from John F. Kennedy airport to her midtown Manhattan apartment. Over the course of their ride, the two have a “life-altering conversation” about the important relationships in their lives.
Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that she was drawn to Daddio because of “the idea of humans being strangers and being so vulnerable with each other and connecting with each other and having a sort of life-altering conversation.”
The Madame Web star also produced the film alongside Donnelly through their TeaTime Pictures banner. “It was amazing,” she said of producing and acting in the film.

“Reservation Dogs” ended its three-season run back in September, so we’ve had time to accept the sad truth that we won’t be seeing any new stories about this group of Indigenous teens in Oklahoma anytime soon. As an artwork detailing the testimonies of ordinary women who have faced terrifying post-partum anxiety, depression and psychosis, Elizabeth Sankey’s 90-minute goth-lite documentary Witches succeeds in shedding light on a stigmatized and often silenced phenomenon many new mothers endure. However, the director takes this solid concept and dilutes it with trivial pop feminist pseudo-history, positing a dubious connection between the European and American witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries and women’s post-birth psychological suffering.
Premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and set to be distributed by streaming service Mubi, the film is certainly watchable but perhaps only 50 percent compelling.
Sankey argues that post-partum psychotic hallucinations may have led countless women of yore to willingly confess to cavorting with Satan. She showcases little evidence supporting this theory, aside from reading aloud a few sentences from primary sources, and attempts to wrap her suppositions in tritely nebulous metaphors...

Nine years after exploring the emotions of 11-year-old Riley, Inside Out 2 made its debut in Los Angeles on Monday, rolling out a whole new range of feelings as Riley becomes a teenager.
Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust from the original film are still in the mix, but now are joined by Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment. While some changes have been made to the voice cast — Liza Lapira replaces Mindy Kaling as Disgust and Tony Hale replaces Bill Hader as Fear — Amy Poehler returns as Joy, still the star emotion for a 13-year-old Riley.

[This story contains spoilers from the second episode of season three of Mayor of Kingstown, “Guts.”]
If there is one takeaway from the Mayor of Kingstown over its three seasons, it’s that the fictional town of the Paramount+ series starring Jeremy Renner seems to drain hope and dreams out of its inhabitants.
Kingstown, Michigan — a city whose main industry is nine penitentiaries — is a wounded community. Whether locked up in the penal system, committing crimes that will lead to being behind bars, serving as a prison guard or being one of the family members of the victims, suffering seems to spare no one.
And that’s what Mike McLusky’s (Renner) voiceover tells viewers in the opening scenes of the second episode of season three, “Guts.” The message comes as McLusky, the town’s unofficial mayor and problem fixer, discovers new metaphorical fires in and out of the prisons for him to extinguish in Kingstown. Eric Kripke, the showrunner of Prime Video’s super(anti)hero series, said on social media Tuesday that the show’s fifth season — which the streamer ordered in May — will be its last.
“Season 4 premiere week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the final season!” Kripke wrote on X. “Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final Ok from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax.”
Kripke’s post is accompanied by a script page purportedly from the season four finale — everything is redacted save for a “fade in” camera direction at the top of the page and the following message from the writer: “See you for our final season, motherfuckers!”

Celine Dion is opening up about when she first started experiencing symptoms of what would later be diagnosed as the rare neurological condition stiff-person syndrome and how it affected her performances.
“I could say, ‘it’s a little cold starting’ or ‘it’s the third show in a row, you’re working too hard.’ But the thing is, it was different. I started to feel like the body was getting more rigid,” Dion tells Hoda Kotb in a preview for an NBC News interview airing in a primetime special Tuesday night.
The singer says that she first started experiencing real problems during her 2008 Taking Chances tour, ahead of a concert in Germany.
“I said to my assistants and to my people, ‘I don’t know if I can do the show. I don’t know what’s happening,'” she recalls, talking like she sounded at the time, her voice weak and thin,...

When Bryce Dessner got a call asking to score the music for “Manhunt,” Apple TV+’s thrilling limited series about the search for John Wilkes Booth after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, it was an easy “yes” for him.
Not only did he and his brother Aaron grow up in West Virginia, they’ve also named the National songs after Civil War battlefields.
Early in the process, showrunner and creator Monica Beletsky sought Dessner out and, together, they explored ideas for how the music would sound. The seven-part limited series follows Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies), Lincoln’s close confidant and secretary of war,...

It might seem like a no-brainer that Law & Order impresario Dick Wolf should extend his murder–centric franchise into the documentary space — or that Netflix, with its many true crime features and miniseries, attempt the same thing in episodic format — but neither really came to fruition until the March premiere of Homicide: New York. Naturally, the long wait carried a fair amount of pressure with it.
“Everyone understood the potential pitfalls of stepping into the true crime space and the tropes that come with it,” says Dan Cutforth, Homicide executive producer and one half of Alfred Street Industries. “We’ve all seen that done… not well. So, it was really important that it be executed on a very high level with this series.”
Homicide: New York dropped five episodes on March 21 and quickly shot to the top of Netflix’s domestic Top 10 chart, even enjoying a run atop David Benioff...
