The new Sundance documentary “Union” puts a spotlight on the extreme anti-union tactics employed by Amazon as it tries to quash a historic labor organizing effort at its Staten Island warehouse.
Directed by Brett Story and Stephen Maing, the film chronicles the struggle of the grassroots Amazon Labor Union (Alu) as it attempts to unionize the JFK8 Amazon facility. Alu president Chris Smalls joined the directors to talk to TheWrap executive editor Adam Chitwood, where they discussed Amazon’s aggressive efforts to undermine the union drive.
“It shows how Amazon and the NYPD work together,” Smalls said at TheWrap’s Sundance Portrait and Interview Studio presented by Nfp, referring to his on-camera arrest captured in the film. “It shows how policing is used to create fear and doubt, and not just to unionize. When you’re going up against corporations, someone being arrested that’s leading a movement will create...

Whether it’s the conclusion of juggernaut hits or new shows that sparked conversation, the television medium delivered in 2023.
The anticipated adaptation of “Daisy Jones & the Six” kept us dancing (and crying) in the spring, while the brilliantly devastating conclusion of “Succession” left us catching our breath in May. “The Last of Us” reminded us of the real emotional stakes of a zombie apocalypse, and Netflix’s “Beef” showed us the depths a person can go to when seeking retribution.
The historic Hollywood double strikes delayed the returns of our favorite broadcast series in the fall, but streaming series like “The Buccaneers” and “The Curse,” and linear hits like “The Golden Bachelor” and “Fargo” kept us glued to our screens this year.
Check out TheWrap’s staff picks for the best TV shows of 2023 below.

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman spoke with Bridget Everett, star of the HBO comedy series “Somebody Somewhere.”
The discussion begins in Manhattan, Kansas, not only the birthplace of Everett but the setting for the HBO series in which she plays Sam, a woman trying to find happiness in the wake of her sister’s death.
“My childhood was a lot different, a lot of the people I grew up with who I’m still friends with were all church, family, faith, football on weekends,” Everett said of how the show’s portrayal of Manhattan life compares to her upbringing. “It was largely sort of a straight, heteronormative vibe back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
That said, when she met with creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen about working on something together at HBO, they pitched a number of elements that resonated deeply with Everett.

As the WGA strike continues and SAG-AFTRA looks to begin its own negotiations with the studios in June, SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland not only expressed solidarity with the WGA, but explained how actors’ problems are similar to those facing writers during a panel on the state of the TV industry.
Speaking during the panel at SeriesFest in Denver on Monday, Crabtree-Ireland said current conditions in the industry are “not right.”
“I think we all understand that things have been moving in the wrong direction as a result of the technological innovations in the industry, and that really has to stop because we can’t have a vital industry if the people who are responsible for creating all of that content can’t have a career, can’t pay for their basic living expenses,” Crabtree-Ireland said. “It’s not right. And, frankly, actors are facing the same problem.

“The Tuba Thieves” director Alison O’Daniel took inspiration for her feature film from a series of tuba thefts from local LA high schools that she heard about on the radio. But instead of investigating the questions of who the thieves were and where the tubas ended up, she decided to make a film about the impacted band students and directors. Motivated by curiosity of peoples’ experiences with sound, she focused on creating a listening project.
Manuel Castañeda, who plays himself in the film, was one of the first people she contacted about the project. Geovanny Marroquin, one of the main characters, and Aija Jones play themselves as Castañeda’s band students. She also enlisted Nyke (Nyeisha Prince) as a main character, with whom she had worked on a previous film, after remembering Nyke’s experience with drumming. 11 years later, the film premiered at Sundance 2023.

2022 was a very good year at the movies, and 2023 promises to be potentially even bigger and even more exciting. While there’s no telling which films will actually deliver, we’ve rounded up 40 of our most anticipated films coming out next year. For some, it’s the combination of director and material (Greta Gerwig and “Barbie”) that piques our interest; for others it’s an exciting sequel (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”); and for others it’s as simple as “Nicolas Cage as Dracula.”
With the caveat that there will surely (and hopefully) be surprises we don’t see coming, here are some of the films we’re most looking forward to in 2023.

From subsequent installments of fan-favorite series to breakout debuts, 2022 featured a host of shows across genres, worlds and themes that dominated conversations, engaged our senses and thrilled us to our cores.
Whether it was the plethora of memes that came out of “The White Lotus” Season 2 finale, the numerous analyses about what “Severance” says about our relationship to work-life balance or the collective Twitter fervor over the budding romance between Janine and Gregory in “Abbott Elementary,” we were entertained, shaken, enthralled and captivated by these excellent TV shows.
As we look toward 2023 — and the many, many series (returning and new) that are sure to grace our screens — members of TheWrap staff and TV team took a moment to reflect on some of the standout shows we loved this year. “Pachinko” moved us, “Bad Sisters” made us cackle, “The Bear” stressed us the f— out and “The Rehearsal” pushed the boundaries of our understanding of television.

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap sits down with “Elvis” director, co-writer and producer Baz Luhrmann to discuss his epic biopic, while TheWrap’s founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman talks about the week’s biggest headlines and stories with podcast guest co-host and TheWrap assistant managing editor for audience Adam Chitwood.
The interview with Baz Luhrmann touches on why he wanted to tell Elvis Presley’s story in the first place. “I took it on not to do a biopic but I always thought Elvis would be this great canvas to explore America, because he’s sort of at the center of everything in the 50s, 60s and 70s,” Luhrmann said.
The “Moulin Rouge!” filmmaker also revealed that the project started to coalesce when he learned more about Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker, played in the film by Tom Hanks, and drew inspiration from “Amadeus” to make him a major part of the story.

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman talked to Paul W. Downs, co-creator, co-showrunner and co-star of HBO Max’s hit comedy “Hacks.”
They talked of course about the show’s Season 3 renewal — following the speculation that the Season 2 finale felt like a series finale — and about where things might be going in the future. But Downs also spoke at length about his experience as the only man in the show’s writers room and one of the few men in the primary cast, explaining that he thinks women’s stories are important because it can, or should, increase the empathy men have for women.
“I feel like when you’re writing, if you can be empathetic enough to step into someone’s shoes, you know, if you can try it on, I think that’s the goal. In not only writing the show, but making the show,...

Some shows don’t really present themselves to the fans as they’re meant to and for some reason fall a little too flat to ever be fully picked up in their entirety since for one reason or another they just don’t resonate on the level that people are wanting to see, as Adam Chitwood of Collider alludes to. But Future Man season 3 is coming to Hulu and it will be the last season in the series. Outwardly it doesn’t look that bad since it appears as though there’s going to be plenty of action, humor, and enough story to tie

In 2004, Sharon Stone won the Best Guest Drama Actress Emmy Award for her scene-stealing turn as attorney Sheila Carlisle on “The Practice.” This year, with her acclaimed performance in Steven Soderbergh‘s six-part HBO miniseries “Mosaic,” Stone is well-positioned for a return to the Emmys, this time in Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress.
In “Mosaic,” Stone portrays Olivia Lake, a successful children’s book author and illustrator living an extravagant, if lonesome existence in the ski resort town of Summit, Utah. She crosses paths with the handsome artist and bartender Joel (Garrett Hedlund) and, hoping their friendship might blossom into something more romantic, invites him to rent out space in her lavish home. During this time, Olivia also meets the charming Eric (Frederick Weller) who, unbeknownst to her, is a con man employed by a neighbor hoping to force her to sell the property.
