Jude Law’s appearance as rich, beautiful playboy Dickie in the 1999 film The Talented Mr Ripley secured his international film stardom, but now the British actor has shared why he almost turned down the role.
Law told The Times of London that he was panicking about being typecast at that stage in his career. He said:
“It was delusion and madness. There was a panic in my head that I was going to be typecast as this good-looking guy. That’s where my 23-year-old brain was. What I missed, idiotically, were the complexities of that role, but honestly? I just wanted to be taken seriously.”
The Talented Mr Ripley film, also starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Philip Seymour Hoffman, was directed by Oscar winner Anthony Minghella and went on to make more than $120million at the box office. Based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith, it has recently been...

As a filmmaker, knowing the right balance to tell the perfect cinematic story can be challenging. While on set, you film everything you think you’ll need to create a great film, but when you hit the editing bay, you realize that some stuff may not work. Scenes that add different aspects may end up on the cutting room floor. Not all of them actually take away from the film, but they add some more layers to it that add a lot. It could be a case of budget or just for time, but some things need to be chopped. What are some deleted scenes that changed the movie?

Director Fede Alvarez recently brought us a new installment in the Alien franchise with his movie Alien: Romulus, but we already have another new Alien project to look forward to. Fargo TV series creator Noah Hawley has been developing an Alien TV series for “FX on Hulu” for the last couple years, and below you’ll find Everything We Know About the Alien TV Series!
The Setting
One of the first things we heard about the Alien series – and one of the most surprising things about it – is that it will actually be set on Earth, a couple decades before the events of the first movie. FX chairman John Landgraf has said the show will take place “right near the end of this century”, and a late-2090s setting would place this between the prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Hawley decided to set the show on Earth because “The alien stories are always trapped…...

Ivy Nile and The Creed Brothers of American Made took on Maxxine Dupri, Otis and Akira Tozawa of Alpha Academy in a highly personal Six-Person Mixed Tag Team Match. Alpha Academy looked strong in the early goings, as Maxxine Dupri soared through the air to take out American Made at ringside. Otis hit the Caterpillar and a cannonball but it was not enough to put down The Creed Brothers. Brutus Creed took Otis out with the Brutus Bomb as Julius Creed knocked out Tozawa at ringside. In our current franchise-dominated landscape, it's hard to imagine an actor having the brass to insist their character be killed off. But that's what living legend Sigourney Weaver did when she made 1992's "Alien 3," reasoning that her "Alien" heroine — the plucky blue-collar space trucker turned badass Xenomorph slayer Ellen Ripley — had endured more than her fair share of bad luck by that point. She would backtrack on that five years later for "Alien: Resurrection," intrigued by the idea of reprising not the Ripley we knew and loved, but a hybrid alien/human clone with her own quirks and personality (not to mention a killer behind-the-back basketball shot). Weaver would then come precariously close to reprising Ripley proper for Neill Blomkamp's scrapped "Alien 5," a sequel that, in a stunt similar to the one David Gordon Green's "Halloween" pulled, planned to ignore the prior two sequels by taking the...

Over the course of his nearly 40-year career, Steven Zaillian has reinvented himself almost as many times as Tom Ripley, the indelible lead character of his latest project, Ripley. He’s written films about erudite cannibals, baseball statisticians, American gangsters, serial killers, and chess prodigies. “Each time I go out, I feel like I’m doing it for the first time and that it requires different material, requires a different approach,” Zaillian tells Tudum.
Zaillian is freshly nominated for both writing and directing Emmys for his work on Ripley — accolades that join a healthy group of previous awards (including an Oscar for writing Schindler’s List and a Directors Guild of America award for his direction of The Night Of). He joined Tudum for a wide-ranging conversation about his entire career, from his work on Awakenings to his directorial debut with Searching for Bobby Fischer, and finally to the lavish con...

The Matt Damon-Affleck dream team continues, except not with Ben this time, but Casey. Doug Liman‘s upcoming Apple TV+ action thriller “The Instigators” celebrated its premiere in New York City on Wednesday, July 31 at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
While Matt Damon and Casey Affleck were just in a film together last year with “Oppenheimer,” we see the duo sharing nearly every second of screen time in this alongside each other as they seek to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings. Affleck serves as a co-writer for this, his first writing credit since his 2019 post-apocalyptic drama “The Light of My Life.”
“First of all, [co-writer] Chuck MacLean had a great idea, Chuck had a fantastic beginning for the script,” Affleck told IndieWire. As for if he sought inspiration from any other films, he told us that “‘Midnight Run,’ ‘The Sting,’ and ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ were definitely talked about a lot.

As Jude Law’s ripe and revolting portrayal of the Tudor monarch opens in cinemas, we look at the film and TV stars who have played him – as comedian, tyrant or heart-throb
Greasy, hairy, large and smelly are not words that instantly summon up the image of Jude Law. Until now. Because the actor’s latest role, Henry VIII in the film Firebrand, will show him in an almost entirely unflattering light. And the effect will be topped off in later scenes by the pustulant ulcers shown on his legs.
Law is, perhaps unfairly, still best known for his line in clean-shaven leading men, from the inconstant Alfie to the suave Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr Ripley. He has clearly relished the chance to look so unappealing on the big screen.

“Alien: Romulus,” the next installment of the “Alien” franchise, brought blood, gore and even a real-life chestburster to San Diego Comic-Con.
Director Fede Alvarez along with cast Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu appeared in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday to discuss the new “Alien” film, which hits theaters on Aug. 16.
The film takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and James Cameron’s popular sequel “Aliens.” The plot describes “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
Three new clips for the film solidified the franchise’s blend of science fiction and horror.
The first clip showed a bevy of terrifying glimpses of the newest “Alien” colonists coming face to face with Xenomorphs, facehuggers and chestbursters, with a sinister rendition...

Ridley Scott, the genius director behind some of the movies like Alien, The Martian, and, Gladiator, almost made his 1979 film a traumatic experience for millions of fans.

Chicago Med is in for at least one shakeup when it returns for its 10th season this September, with the departure of Dominic Rains (who plays Dr. Crockett Marcel). But the Season 9 finale cliffhanger left the future of Dr. Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell) in question. Liliana’s brother, who had previously sued Ripley, was brought into the Ed after being attacked by a masked assailant with a baseball bat. He claimed that Ripley did it. When the police asked if he had anything to say, he shook his head and walked out. Among those watching and wondering why he didn’t say anything was Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram)—and this came as something was finally happening between the two of them. Now, Hannah doesn’t know what to think, says Schram. “She’s very unsettled, very confused,” Schram told TV Insider at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

While the 2023 Emmys occurred earlier this year (due to the SAG strikes), they have returned to their usual place in the calendar. A quick reminder that series like House of the Dragon and The Boys are not eligible for this year’s Emmys. The window for the competition ran from June of 2023 to May of 2024. Additionally, The Bear‘s nominations are in reference to Season 2, not the most recent season on Hulu. With some of that housekeeping done, we have plenty of great shows and news to check out. Below are a handful of notes about programs our audience loves and a further breakdown of big categories.
Shōgun Leads the Field

“A is For Alien: An ABC Book”, is a new Little Golden Book ‘light-hearted reimagining’ of director Ridley Scott’s grisly outer space horror feature, now available:
“ …follow ‘Ripley’ and her crew aboard the commercial space tug ‘Nostromo’, who, after coming across a mysterious derelict spaceship on an uncharted planetoid, find themselves up against an aggressive and deadly extraterrestrial ‘Xenomorph’ set loose on the ship.
“The Xenomorph is an ‘endoparasitoid’ extraterrestrial species that lack a technological civilization of any kind, and are instead primal, predatory creatures with no higher goal than the preservation and propagation of their own species by any means necessary, up to and including the elimination of other lifeforms that may pose a threat to their existence.
“ Like wasps or termites, Xenomorphs are eusocial, with a single fertile queen breeding a caste of warriors, workers, or other specialist strains.

Shōgun leads the pack with 25 Emmy nominations with The Bear close behind with 23 nominations.
We may have just left this year’s awards season behind but there’s another major awards ceremony looming in the near future. The Emmy nominations were announced last night and they reflect a great year of TV.
Shōgun, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ ambitious epic based on James Clavell’s novel, received a whopping 25 nominations across all categories. With more seasons of the acclaimed series now planned, Shōgun qualified for the Outstanding Drama category instead of a Limited or Anthology Series.
Shōgun is up for Oustanding Drama Series and Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are both nominated for Lead Actor and Actress respectively.

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? Per THR's reporting, Hawley has just wrapped filming on his long-gestating Alien series, whose title has now been revealed to be Alien: Earth.
“We are wrapped — just wrapped,” Hawley told THR, revealing that he's knees deep in the post-production process on the show, figuring out the series' VFX elements as Alien: Earth's long road to our screens finally nears its end. Between the pandemic and last year's SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, by the time Hawley's take on Ridley Scott's seminal sci-fi franchise arrives (presumably sometime next year) it will have been half a decade since the project — which takes place in the late...

While it’s hard to believe that Dakota Fanning hasn’t previously been recognized by the TV Academy, having now been acting for 25 years, she did in fact earn her first Emmy nomination this morning, speaking with Deadline about her upcoming Paramount horror film Vicious, her upcoming Netflix murder mystery series The Perfect Couple, and her creative ambitions going forward.
Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, Vicious watches as a woman spends the night fighting for her existence as she slips down a rabbit hole contained inside a gift from a late-night visitor. Of her time working on the film, dated for release on August 8, 2025, Fanning said, “I absolutely loved that experience, and that was very different from anything I’ve done before. It was an insane experience in the best way. I loved it and really can’t wait to see it.”

The Emmy voters have spoken and this message was not “sent from my iPhoen”: the comedy-drama Baby Reindeer was nominated for Outstanding Limited Series (along with 10 other Emmys). Richard Gadd was also nominated for the role of Donny Dunn, an aspiring stand-up comic whose life is turned upside down after a casual encounter at a local bar.
And while we’re on the topic of dramas, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West each received a royal nod for the historical drama The Crown, which has won 21 Emmys since it first aired in 2016. This year, The Crown racked up 18 nominations across categories. Other highlights include Sofía Vergara’s nomination for her leading role in Griselda — and unlike the grifter he plays in the psychological thriller Ripley, Andrew Scott didn’t con his way into receiving an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of the petty criminal Tom Ripley.

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will be making a lot of pleasant phone calls today after the streamer landed 107 Emmy nominations across 35 different shows.
It’s not the streamer’s biggest nomination haul — that was 160 in 2020 — but it put it firmly in the lead with FX coming in a surprise second with 93 nominations, higher than HBO and Max.
There were sizeable hauls for British shows Baby Reindeer and The Crown, and Ripley, which it picked up after it had been produced, but Bajaria is most pleased about the diversity of its nominations.
Shows such as All The Light We Cannot See, Blue Eye Samurai, The Gentlemen, The Greatest Night In Pop, Griselda, Love on the Spectrum U.S., 3 Body Problem and The Upshaws were all recognized, highlighting its “breadth” of programming, according to Bajaria.

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards that were revealed on Wednesday morning confirm that there is tremendous support from the TV Academy’s 22,000 members for the three shows that have long been presumed to be the frontrunners in their respective categories: FX’s drama series Shogun (which landed a field-leading 25 noms), FX’s comedy series The Bear (the runner-up with 23 noms, a new record for a comedy, or at least a show that could get away with being classified as one) and Netflix’s limited series Baby Reindeer (11 noms).
But — and this is a big but — the noms also suggest that pundits, including me, may have been overestimating the strength of that trio of shows and underestimating the strength of some of their competitors.
Among dramas, Netflix’s The Crown, for its sixth, final and worst-reviewed season (it’s at just 55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), was the runner-up with a formidable 18 noms,...

Tom Ripley is a master of reinvention, but his considerable skills can only take him so far. At the end of Ripley, the walls are closing in onAndrew Scott’s dapper con artist, and Italian police are desperately tracking the man they suspect of murdering two people — Freddie Miles (Eliot Sumner) and Ripley himself. This gives Ripley, who’s been posing as Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), the perfect escape hatch. Because it’s Dickie the police suspect of murder — and Dickie whose identity (and bank account) Ripley has been using — Ripley can return to a safe harbor: his own name and passport.
“People have a lot of preconceptions about Tom Ripley,” Emmy nominee Scott told Netflix of the infamous antihero created by Patricia Highsmith in her 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. “So it’s my job, I suppose in some ways, to ignore all that and try to create our...

Nava Mau has said the Emmy nomination for her Baby Reindeer breakthrough is a victory for the transgender acting community.
Mau played Teri in the hit Netflix series and becomes the first trans woman in Emmy history to be recognized in the supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie category.
Speaking to Deadline soon after her nomination, Mau laughed that she had been crying for 45 minutes with “overwhelming joy.” She added that it was proof that trans actors can surpass all expectations when given the right opportunities.
“For trans actors we just don’t get a lot of opportunities to develop our craft, grow as artists, and to be recognized for all that we are and all that we can be,” she said.

Ripley is who assumes the identity of a wealthy American expat. But, as star Andrew Scott told Netflix, it’s also “a story about art and beauty and sensuality… helped by the great beauty of Italy.”
Based on the 1955 Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the 13-time Emmy-nominated limited series follows charming con artist Tom Ripley (Scott) on a trip to Italy in the 1960s bankrolled by a shipping magnate to retrieve his wayward son, Richard “Dickie” Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn). Tom ingratiates himself into Dickie’s life — much to the chagrin of Dickie’s suspicious girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning) — and soon is on the run from police while posing as Dickie in Rome.
Creator Steven Zaillian’s team of talented artists — production designer David Gropman, director of photography Robert Elswit, and costume designers Maurizio Millenotti and Giovanni Casalnuovo — meticulously re-created a 1960s aesthetic. Below, find out how...

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

Welcome to this review of this past Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!
Match #1: Sheamus def. “Big” Bronson Reed The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The Celtic Warrior took Reed on a tour at ringside, delivering 10 Beats of the Bodhran over the announce table before pulling in Raw commentator Pat McAfee for an embrace. Sheamus followed up with a huge White Noise in an incredible feat of strength but was unable to garner the win. Director Fede Alvarez has said on multiple occasions that Alien: Romulus is a movie that borrows heavily from Alien and Aliens, but that doesn't mean he won't be bringing his own ideas to the table.
During a recent conversation with Total Film (via SFFGazette.com), the filmmaker explained how nature documentaries factored into how he directed the puppeteers responsible for breathing life into the Xenomorphs and, more specifically, the Chestbursters.
"It is done almost like a nature documentary," Alvarez tells the site. "While we were seeing it on set we were joking, [like] 'The creature is coming out slow. It's looking for the scent of the mother...' The creature's not trying to be scary."
"The creature is trying to get the fuck out of that cocoon, that happens to be a person. It's almost like this is more realistic in a way, but without betraying all the beautiful things of the original designs.

At one time, Harvey Weinstein was the most influential and powerful Hollywood producer. Through his production company Miramax, various award-winning films were made and every actor/actress wanted to be associated with him. The studio was responsible for Oscar-winning films like Pulp Fiction, The Crying Game, Good Will Hunting, and Shakespeare in Love.

The studio was already among other prestige names in Hollywood by the late 90s. The studio supported both commercial films as well as indie filmmakers who were trying to make their name in the industry. However, they passed on the opportunity to distribute a micro-budget horror film The Blair Witch Project in 1999, which went on to become a big commercial success.

Matt Bomer earned his first Emmy nomination 10 years ago for his supporting role in the HBO telefilm “The Normal Heart.” He played AIDS-afflicted Felix Turner, a role that had previously won John Benjamin Hickey a Tony Award on Broadway. Bomer was the overwhelming favorite to win his race, but he was upset by Martin Freeman for playing Dr. Watson in “Sherlock: His Last Vow.” However, Bomer is back this year in another project that addresses queer history in the United States, “Fellow Travelers.” Will he win this time?
Bomer stars in “Travelers” as Hawkins Fuller, a State Department official hiding his homosexuality, from the Pink Scare that purged queer people from government during the Cold War to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. The performance earned Bomer nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and he won a Peabody Award as a producer of the limited series.

Since The Last Update
Emmy nominations voting began on June 13 — the same day that the TV Academy posted on its website the full list of certified contenders for each category, providing confirmation of which contenders were/weren’t officially submitted/accepted, and, after a bit of mathematics and cross-referencing, precisely how many nominees there will ultimately be in each race.
Voting continues through 10pm Pst on June 24, and then the lame-duck waiting period begins, as we won’t find out the nominees until July 17.
See below for my latest assessment of all major categories.
