Who said the heroes’ journey can’t take a little detour? In the trailer for “We Are Lady Parts” Season 2, the eponymous female punk band decides to dabble in villainy — to endlessly entertaining results.
Created by “Polite Society” writer and director Nida Manzoor, “We Are Lady Parts” premiered in the U.K. in 2018 and in the U.S. via Peacock in 2021. IndieWire’s Steve Greene wrote at the time that “Each member of the greater Lady Parts quintet could easily handle an episode on their own,” praising a show which is “at its best when it’s breaking free from restraints, too, tossing in a bunch of playful asides and visual diversions.”
“I wanted to go bolder, sillier, darker and deeper and that is exactly what we strived to do,” Manzoor said in a press release accompanying the Season 2 trailer.

The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.
The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.

Lace up your motorcycle boots and rip off your shirt sleeves: acclaimed sitcom We Are Lady Parts is back for Series 2. Showrunner Nida Manzoor launched her career with Series 1 back in 2021, depicting the exploits of scrappy, all-female Muslim punk band, Lady Parts. Last year, she followed it up with barnstorming action-comedy film Polite Society, for which she won a BIFA for Best Debut Screenwriter. Rocking her way back to the small screen, Manzoor’s Channel 4 hit returns for another run next month, and you can see a selection of first-look images below:
The whole band is back together for this one: Anjana Vasan, who was last seen in the foul-mouthed Wicked Little Letters, returns as lead guitarist Amina, along with bandmates Sarah Kameela Impey, Juliette Motamed, and Faith Omole. The Oscar-winner and the Nobel laureate have teamed up to make Bread & Roses, a new film about the abuse of women in Afghanistan. In an emotional interview, they warn that the west ignores its message at their peril
“Strong women are not easy women,” says Jennifer Lawrence, “and a woman’s life is lonely. So much of our experience cannot be shared or understood by men, and our rights are in their hands. That’s why we need each other.”
The two other people on our video call nod in agreement. One is Malala Yousafzai, who, with Lawrence, has produced a new documentary about the oppression of Afghan women by the Taliban after US troops withdrew in 2021. The other is Sahra Mani, who directed it.

I thought I was safe to boldly pronounce my initial 2024 Tony Awards predictions, but then Sufjan Stevens appeared to stomp all over them. As David Buchanan and I convened to discuss where we thought the musical nominations were headed this season, news broke that Off-Broadway’s dreamy dance show “Illinoise” will transfer to the St. James Theatre just in time to compete at this year’s ceremony. The show, based on Stevens’ seminal album, has thrown our Tony predictions into disarray. Watch our full video slugfest above.
“Illinoise” marks the 15th new musical of the 2023-2024 season. That’s more new tuners than any Broadway season since 1975-1976. Theatergoers this year are indeed spoiled with a glut of new shows, but predicting the coveted Best Musical category has become a titanic task.

“Yasmeen’s Element” opens with a quote about education from Malala Yousafzai. It’s a smart move, immediately bringing the topic to the forefront of the viewing experience while invoking one of the most famous advocates of girls’ education, one who hails from co-writer and Pakistani-American director Amman Abbasi’s country of origin. But the film, an enthralling escapade centered on the title character and co-written by Jeffrey E. Stern and Sana Jafri, doesn’t need it
Eshal Fatima stars as Yasmeen, a 12-year-old student in a North Pakistan village who delights in going to school and spending time with her classmates. One day, the teacher dismisses students early after speaking with soldiers outside the school, assigning everyone one element from the periodic table to present on the next day. Jon Stewart took time at the end of Monday’s Daily Show episode to remember his dog Dipper, who died Sunday.
The host shared the story of how he ended up adopting the pooch. He recalled that around 12 or 13 years ago, his children wanted to raise money for New York City-based no-kill animal shelter, Animal Haven. So they baked cupcakes and held a bake sale at the shelter.
“As a little extra incentive, [the shelter] brought out this 1-ish-year-old brindle pitbull,” he said, stopping himself as he began to tear up. “[He had been] hit by a car in Brooklyn and lost his right leg,” Stewart added, choking back tears.
“They put the dog in my lap and we left that day feeling really good that we’d helped this great organization — and we also left with this 1-ish-year-old brindle pitbull,” Stewart continued. “We called him Dipper. In a world of good boys, he was the best.
The host shared the story of how he ended up adopting the pooch. He recalled that around 12 or 13 years ago, his children wanted to raise money for New York City-based no-kill animal shelter, Animal Haven. So they baked cupcakes and held a bake sale at the shelter.

Things got emotional for Jon Stewart three episodes into his return to The Daily Show. The political commentator announced that his dog Dipper had died the night before.
“In a world of good boys, he was the best,” Stewart said, honoring his dog’s loss.
Stewart recalled that twelve years ago, his kids wanted to raise money for an animal shelter in NYC called Animal Haven. His kids baked cupcakes and set up a table outside the shelter to sell them and brought out a brindle pitbull who had lost his right leg after being hit by a car.
“I thought I’d get further,” Stewart said as he choked up with emotion, remembering his dog.
Stewart and his family left the organization alongside the pitbull they named Dipper. The Comedy Central host said Dipper “used to come to The Daily Show every day. He was part of the Og Daily Show dog crew.

Six directors of standout 2023 documentary features gathered at The Hollywood Reporter’s Los Angeles offices in mid-November for THR’s annual Documentary Roundtable.
Among them were two revered veterans with Oscars to their name: Davis Guggenheim (2006’s An Inconvenient Truth), who helmed Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, a film about the life and struggles of the beloved actor who was stricken at a young age with Parkinson’s disease; and Roger Ross Williams (2009’s Music by Prudence), director of Stamped From the Beginning, a film about the history of anti-Black racism in America. Meanwhile, a first-time filmmaker, twice-Grammy-nominated producer D. Smith, profiled four Black transgender women who have performed sex work in Kokomo City.
Oscar nominee Nicole Newnham (2020’s Crip Camp) made a documentary portrait of a person once famous but now largely forgotten: The Disappearance of Shere Hite, about the titular sex researcher and her landmark 1976 book about female sexuality.

More than eight years after David Letterman signed off as host of The Late Show, he will return – not as host (this ain’t The Tonight Show!) but as guest. Next Monday, Letterman will take the chair next to current host Stephen Colbert, who took over for the snarky, TV-smashing, near-Ted Striker Letterman in 2015.
During Thursday’s episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert announced that David Letterman would make his triumphant return to The Ed Sullivan Theater, which the latter made his home for 23 seasons and more than 4,200 episodes. “I am so happy to say, I will be joined…by a man who is no stranger to The Ed Sullivan Theater, though I know for a fact he’s not been here for eight-and-a-half years. Because my guest will be Mr. David Letterman.”

Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai will be making their Broadway debuts… as producers!
The former Secretary of State and the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate have joined the producing team of the upcoming Broadway musical Suffs, which will open next year.
Suffs, written by Shaina Taub, originally ran off-Broadway last year at the Public Theater and now it will play at the Music Box Theatre with an official opening night on April 18.
It’s 1913 and the women’s movement is heating up in America, anchored by the suffragists — “Suffs,” as they call themselves — and their relentless pursuit of the right to vote. Reaching across and against generational, racial, and class divides, these brilliant, flawed women entertain and inspire us with the story of their hard-won victory in an ongoing fight. So much has changed since the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment over a century ago, and yet we’re reminded sometimes we need to look back,...

Iranian human rights advocate and freedom fighter Narges Mohammadi has won the Nobel Peace Prize 2023, organizers of the award said Friday.
The Norwegian Nobel committee that awards the prize lauded Mohammadi for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”
It highlighted: “Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.” Mohammadi is still in prison.
The prize also “recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women,” the committee noted.
Iran has also been in focus for various Hollywood stars. For example, early this year, Cate Blanchett, Jason Momoa, Samuel L. Jackson, Jada Pinkett Smith and Bryan Cranston were among members of the entertainment industry publicly supporting calls to end Iran‘s execution of protestors,...

It’s only delightful to witness the attention Linda Evangelista receives when she arrives at any event these days: The legendary supermodel and breast cancer survivor has been enjoying a public comeback that began to roll out slowly when she appeared on the cover of British Vogue in 2022, but ramped up to klieg light level when she was joined by Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell on the September 2023 cover of American Vogue. What does Evangelista think about this sudden burst of attention and adulation? “That I should’ve left the house sooner!” she exclaimed with a laugh to The Hollywood Reporter at Tuesday night’s Kering’s Second Annual Caring for Women Dinner at The Pool in New York City.
The annual fundraiser, produced by the Kering Group to benefit a trio of women-focused causes, was more than enough reason to venture out, she added. “I have felt so much love this week,...

While “My Next Guest With David Letterman” executive producers had previously pulled off intimate sit-downs with culture-makers like Barack Obama, Malala Yousafzai and Cardi B, producing an in-depth conversation in a Ukrainian war zone was certainly not in their repertoire before pursuing an interview with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The idea to interview Zelenskyy started with producer Tommy Alter, and scored Letterman’s immediate enthusiasm as the host told EP Tom Keaney, “this is the only thing I want to do.”
“I think Dave’s immediate reaction was probably generated by the fact that this is a world event that’s happening in real time,” EP and Imagine president Justin Wilkes told TheWrap, adding that it was “still fairly early days in the war.” “He’s one of the most interesting people on the planet right now, and wouldn’t it be interesting to go talk to him and see...

Two Emmy-nominated directors talk about their approaches and the risks they took. For Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, Davis Guggenheim explains how broke the conventional documentary rules he typically follows for the Apple TV+ movie — a risk that paid off with seven Emmy noms. And Emmy nominee Peter Hoar looks back on “Long, Long Time,” the episode of HBO’s drama series The Last of Us that took a major narrative risk to depict a romantic connection rarely seen on television.

Barbie has worn many hats throughout her diverse and impressive career, which now includes a Nobel Prize. In an Instagram post on July 30, Malala Yousafzai joined in on the "Barbie" fun by sharing a photo of herself and her husband, Asser Malik standing in a life-size Barbie box. After seeing Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated movie, the 26-year-old education activist shared her reaction to the film and wrote, "This Barbie has a Nobel Prize." She added, "He's just Ken."
Although Emma Mackey's Barbie character does have a Nobel Prize in the film, outside of Barbieland, Yousafzai is the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize. She received the award in 2014 for her activism, fighting for women's empowerment and their right to an education. Her efforts resulted in her challenging Taliban restrictions on education in Mingora, Pakistan, where she was eventually shot by a masked gunman as a result of her efforts.

Launching on the streamer Wednesday, Elba stars alongside the likes of Archie Panjabi, The Crown’s Ben Miles and Max Beesley as Sam Nelson, an accomplished business negotiator forced to use his guile to save the lives of passengers onboard a hijacked plane making its way to London. Elba is also EPing the series, which comes from 60FortyFilms and Idiotlamp Productions in association with Green Door.

Jewelry fans surely were satisfied by the abundance of statement necklaces, gemstone earrings, cocktail rings and brooches worn by the stars at the 2023 Oscars. Hollywood doesn’t always embrace jewels for red-carpet dressing so thoroughly, but on Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, sparkle indeed was among the night’s strongest sartorial themes.
Without question, the best indicator of high-end jewels’ dominance on Sunday’s champagne carpet was the healthy showcase of statement necklaces, which in the past often have been shunted aside in favor of a bare neckline and a pair of chandelier earrings. But Sofia Carson’s early arrival, wearing a stunning emerald and diamond necklace by Chopard, proved to be the first of many big moments throughout the evening.
Carson’s emeralds also were chief among the night’s trends, with Jenny Slate, Margot Robbie, Malala Yousafzai and Fan Bingbing also choosing the fiery...

Malala Yousafzai tweeted a message the morning after Jimmy Kimmel had a peculiar question to ask the activist during the Oscars.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner, 25, appeared highly uncomfortable when the Oscar host approached her with a question during a break.
Kimmel asked Yousafzai — who was a teenage education activist that was shot in the face by the Taliban in Pakistan in 2012 — a question about Chris Pine and Harry Styles’ ‘spit-gate’ debacle.
The “Stranger At The Gate” filmmaker looked confused before answering: “I only talk about peace.”

The evening took an even more hectic turn when someone dressed as the movie character Cocaine Bear began to hover around Yousafzai later in the night.
Kimmel shouted: “Cocaine bear, leave Malala alone!” as she looked puzzled and worried.
