Publicity executive Jeffrey Ballard, who represented Charlie Sheen for many years through his company Jeff Ballard PR, died Jan. 30 in Santa Monica after a five-year battle with cancer. He was 64.
His death was confirmed by his friend Brad Bessey.
Charlie Sheen said in a statement, “As my publicist of 37 years, it’s no secret that he had his work cut out for him. He met every challenge head on with class and patience. As my dear friend of 40 years, he was equally loyal and generous to a fault. Safe travels Jb, you are sorely missed, now and forever.”
Ballard got his start in Hollywood while still a teenager, crashing the set of “Eight is Enough” as a high school journalism student and signing his first two clients — the show’s stars Adam Rich and Dick Van Patten.
He was dubbed the “boy publicist to the stars,” and opened Jeff Ballard P.

Embattled digital firm Ozy Media says it is shutting down, just days after a New York Times column exposed a range of dubious and even potentially criminal behavior by its executives.
Since the column by Ben Smith was published online last Sunday, a drip-drip series of events has ensued, with board chairman Marc Lasry and marquee hire Katty Kay both stepping down. Current and former employees came out of the woodwork to paint the company as a “Potemkin village,” in the memorable phrase of former staffer Eugene Robinson.
“At Ozy, we have been blessed with a remarkable team of dedicated staff,” the company’s board of directors said in a statement to the Times and other outlets. “Many of them are world-class journalists and experienced professionals to whom we owe tremendous gratitude and who are wonderful colleagues. When the relatively new Lumiere Awards were bestowed in Hollywood last week by the Advanced Imaging Society to reward the best hi-tech wizardry in entertainment media, the ceremony was so slick and relevant that I couldn’t help noticing — uh, oh — it felt a bit Oscar-y and Emmy-ish. That’s ironic.
That’s because the society was founded 10 years ago to do what the film and TV academies of arts and sciences refused to do – take the sciences part of their job seriously. I wonder: Why do the Oscars have four acting categories, but no award for Best Use of Hdr (High Dynamic Range) in a Film? The Lumieres have three Hdr film categories (and more for TV), including one for foreign films that was just won by Oscars frontrunner “Roma.”

That didn't take long. Former Good Morning America executive producer Susan Winston, who took over CBS' show The Talk 2 weeks ago, has exited the daytime talk show. B&C first reported the departure, which came after Winston asked to be relieved from her duties. Winston, whose biggest post-gma credit was creating and exec producing short-lived daily daytime talk show The Other Half, succeeded executive producer Brad Bessey, who announced in March he would be leaving after the end of the show's freshman season. Maybe it was a bad omen that the transition of power happened on Friday, May 13. "Friday is going to be a blood bath at The Talk," an insider emailed us earlier that week. "Everyone on the staff is dreading this." Staying on as exec producer are Sara Gilbert, who created The Talk, and John Redmann. Gilbert co-hosts the show with Julie Chen, Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini.

Maybe CBS's "The Talk" is more like "The View" than we originally expected. Just a few months in to Season 1, and it's already losing panelists.
