It looks like May will be a somewhat busy month in regards to horror and sci-fi VOD/Digital HD releases, as we have thirteen different titles arriving before Memorial Day. Dark Sky Films is kicking things off with Adrián García Bogliano’s Scherzo Diabolico, and for those of you wanting to check out the latest from Kane Hodder, The Haunting of Alice D arrives on all digital platforms the very same day.
Scream Factory is unleashing their latest film, Bite, on VOD on May 6th, and Regression, the mystery thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, is getting released on May 10th courtesy of Starz Digital. Also, one of my favorite films from the 2015 Los Angeles Film Fest, Crush the Skull, is being released on May 17th courtesy of Breaking Glass Pictures.
Other notable VOD titles for May 2016 include The Offering, What We Become, The Curse of Sleeping Beauty, and The Ones Below.

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.

Alex Garland’s Ex Machina has been one of the unexpected gems of the year, a strikingly original and modern sci-fi that has already been enshrined as a cult hit. Now, with its UK and Us theatrical releases behind it, there’s an opportunity to lift its shell and examine the wiring beneath. Jock, 2000 Ad luminary and Garland’s Dredd collaborator, was the man responsible for designing Ava and a new book charts her/its creation from the ground up. Here, exclusively, is some of that concept art. Click for a closer look. The book, Ava Evolved, collates Jock’s mood pieces, designs and concept art to show how Alicia Vikander’s AI slowly came together during pre-production. It’s a limited edition tome – there are only 500 copies available – and a fascinating insight into how the robot prototype developed from Vikander 1.0 to the final, big-screen version. Interestingly, it all came...

Hugh Jackman has played Logan aka Wolverine in seven different films. It’s an impressive number that will shortly increase with a third solo Wolverine film and possibly X-Men:Apocalypse, although at the time of writing he has yet to be officially cast. A few other names are snapping at the heels of Jackman, notably the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you include the forthcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, Chris Evans has played Captain America four times (five if you include his appearance as Loki using magic to look like the first Avenger in Thor: The Dark World), Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth have portrayed Black Widow and Thor respectively four times each whilst the King of the McU, Robert Downey Jr. has made an impressive six appearances as Iron Man/Tony Stark (including his post-credit appearance in The Incredible Hulk).

Check out these alternative new posters created by artists Francesco Francavilla and Jock for director Alex Garland’s brilliant sci-fi movie Ex MacHina.
In his review, Matt Zoller Seitz (rogerebert.com) rightly calls it “a classic film.”
Catch this intelligent, must-see film this weekend, if you live in NY and La, or when it opens nationwide on April 24th. You wont see another movie like it this year.
Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, Ex MacHina. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac).

"Isn't it strange, to create something that hates you?" With the Us release of Alex Garland's new sci-fi Ex Machina just around the corner (on April 10th - go see it!), there's no better time to feature some concept art that appeared earlier in the year (thanks to io9 + Cbr). Jock, a famous comic book artist/illustrator, did some concept art work for Garland's Ex Machina when it was in development, helping envision the main robot character Ava played by Alicia Vikander in the film. He tweeted out some of these images in January, and we're just seeing them but it's perfect timing as the film hits theaters here soon. That means everyone finally gets a chance to have their mind opened by the sci-fi fun of Ex Machina (here's my review). Here's the concept art which was first posted on Jock's Twitter @jock4twenty, but was also posted to Cbr.

Jock has revealed the early concept art he created for Ex Machina.
The comics artist worked on designs for artificial intelligence Ava (Alicia Vikander) for writer-director Alex Garland.
"I was on the film very early, so after I finished there was a lot of work done by the FX people, [and] other factors that led to her final design," Jock wrote on Twitter.
He said that he would upload all the images to his website in the near future.
The film centres around the relationship between a computer programmer (Domhnall Gleeson), and reclusive robotics expert (Oscar Isaac) and his AI creation, Ava.
Ex Machina: Alex Garland talks making the best sci-fi film of 2015
Jock is currently working with Batman writer Scott Snyder on Wytches.
Ex Machina will arrive in UK cinemas on January 21 and in the Us on April 10.

If you're a fan of the sci-fi genre, then 2014 has been something of a blessing. There has been a glut of top shelf sci-fi movies released this year, from the Tom Cruise intergalactic war movie "Edge of Tomorrow," to the thoughtful eeriness of "Under the Skin," to the creepy body-snatching of "Honeymoon," to the wonderful socio-political commentary of "Snowpiercer" to the balls-out fun of "Guardians of the Galaxy." All of these movies are magic. And they call came out this year. Thankfully, it looks like this winning streak is going to continue into 2015, with the first trailer for Alex Garland's "Ex Machina" already blowing our minds.
Garland, if you're unfamiliar with his work, was once a cerebral novelist whose cult book "The Beach" was adapted by Danny Boyle and Leonardo DiCaprio. That chance encounter with Boyle, though, started a second wind to his career, with Garland writing two terrific...

The antics of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 22 Jump Street proved irresistible for Australian cinemagoers last weekend.
The sequel to 21 Jump Street easily topped the box-office, pulling in $6.8 million from Thursday to Sunday, and $7 million with previews. Pro-rata, that.s even stronger than the bumbling cop comedy.s $US57.1 million debut in the Us the previous weekend, which was the second-biggest opening ever for an R-rated comedy behind The Hangover Part II.
In second spot DreamWorks Animation.s How to Train Your Dragon 2 conjured up $3.5 million. With previews, the 3D action-fantasy voiced by Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Kristin Wiig and Jonah Hill has raked in $8.7 million.
All told, nationwide takings surged by 25% to $16.7 million, according to Rentrak.s weekend estimates. It wasn.t a memorable weekend for Australian cinema as The Rover plunged by 44% to $81,000 after an inauspicious debut, bringing the 11-day total to $344,000.

Dredd. The lil’ movie that could. If you’ve been following our site then you may have noticed that certain writers have a bit of a wee crush on the 2012 box office flop. Ok, wee may be a bit of an understatement, but if you’ve managed to see the Karl Urban masterpiece then you understand our enthusiasm. Since its abysmal box office performance, Dredd has grown from a tiny cult wonder to a world wide phenomenon thanks in large part to Frank from Ohio. Frank is the founder of the Make a Dredd Sequel campaign, now officially endorsed by 2000 Ad itself. Since we last spoke to Frank the buzz had been growing but now that buzz has turned to booms as the word on everyone’s lips at the Emerald City Comic Con has been ‘sequel’. The official petition, which has reached 100,000 signatures (add yours Here) is growing daily!

Comic book movies are solid blockbuster fare now, but there are plenty of adaptations that didn't get the love they deserved...
You might argue that fans of comic book adaptations have had a pretty good decade or so. Between The Avengers movies, the Dark Knight trilogy, and multiple Spider-Man and X-Men films, some of the biggest-grossing action movies of all time have been based on comics. Not bad when you consider that only recently, the medium was considered the preserve of dateless man-children alone.
But here's the thing: not every comic book adaptation lends itself to being a summer tentpole CGI-fest, and just as many get overlooked or forgotten completely by the time the next one comes out. Comic adaptations are coming out thick and fast, and with so much forward momentum it's sometimes worth taking a moment to look back on what's come before.

Over for another year, this weekend’s Thought Bubble was the biggest in its short history, and it definitely felt it. While I didn’t attend every panel or get every signature that I wanted to, my days were still jam-packed with awkward fan-worship of idolised writers, wonderful small press discoveries and comfortable reprieves in the plush Bury Theatre in which writers and artists waxed lyrical about their work and industry.
On arriving at New Dock, I and a couple of friends navigated the main hall as best we could, but the first morning of Thought Bubble is always (in my experience) the busiest, and I may have slightly regretted packing my decade-old, ramshackle rucksack to the brim with quite as many comics and trades as it made me something of an obstacle to all beside and behind, especially when we stopped to gawk at a table’s wares.

The arrival of Kick-Ass 2 is a reminder of how comic book artists and creators have become movie industry royalty, James writes...
I like to think that the following happened on a daily basis during the filming of Kick-Ass 2 - all cast and crew members signalled their arrival on set by announcing, "I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum."
If no one actually did take the opportunity to make a tenuous title-based association and quote Roddy Piper's best line in They Live, it's a damn shame. If Kick-Ass 3 happens, someone (everyone) involved can start this motivational ritual/repeat film reference in-joke when shooting begins on that sequel. In advance, you're welcome.

The Olympic cyclist lived through the genocide and many of his family were killed. Now his achievements are helping to change the way the world views Rwanda – and how it sees itself
There have been a lot of odd moments in Adrien Niyonshuti's life recently. Most of them started when a group of Americans arrived in Rwanda and put on a bicycle race in September 2006. Adrien, a 19-year-old student, won and, as his prize, he was allowed to keep the mountain bike he had borrowed from the visitors for the event. It was a Schwinn, nothing that special by western standards, but exponentially more advanced than anything little, landlocked Rwanda – about the size of Wales but with four times as many inhabitants – had ever seen. He actually didn't ride it very much. No one else in the country had a mountain bike to go with him, so it was dull on his own.

First reported by USA Today on Friday, British comics creator Jock will soon be stepping in to take on the role of both illustrator and writer for Marvel’s “Savage Wolverine.” The critically acclaimed artist will take over writing duties this September with issue #9, picking up where Joe Madueira and Zeb Wells leave off with their short run on the title.
According to the report, Jock’s upcoming story arc will take place thousands of years in the future after Wolverine crash lands on alien planet.
Jock described his pitch for the story arc in the article.
“Logan has the power of regeneration as we know, but he’d only ever be able to regenerate his own cells,” Jock explains. “So what if thousands, maybe even millions of years in the future, the world around him has continued to evolve, and he’s left literally, a Neanderthal man?”

Last November, when Bryan Singer revealed that his costume designer from X-Men and X2 Louise Mingenbach would be returning to design costumes for X-Men: Days of Future Past, many fans jumped the gun and complained that the leather, black suits would be returning. However, Singer quickly clarified a few days later and simply stated that there would be no leather suits. The fear pendulum quickly swung to the opposite end and some took that to mean that there wouldn't be any costumes in the film. However, not too long ago product designer and comic book artist Jock revealed that he's working on the costume designs for the film. Despite Karl Urban uttering, “I am the law” his overall demeanor was just one of the many disappointments in the new film take on the classic 2000 Ad hero, Judge Dredd. Dredd is out on home video this week from Lionsgate and it is amazing how bored I was watching it. The majority of the 96 film takes place in the Peach Trees Block and is effectively Dredd playing John McLane, trying to survive a sealed off building under siege.
It’s hard to watch this without comparing it with the Sylvester Stallone misfire of the 1990s. While the story sucked and the star violated the character by taking his helmet off a lot, it looked like the weekly comic come to life. The high tech, futuristic clutter of Mega City One was expertly captured, reminding us of how much the visual of Blade Runner derived from the British comic which has been around since 1977. Also,...

This weekend saw the annual Thought Bubble comic convention in Leeds, running for two days as opposed to the traditional one for the second time only, which meant that the panels were a little more spread out but greater in number and more varied in content, and though there were a more than a few disappointing absences – Fiona Staples contracting food poisoning two days before the con being one of them – and a bigger scale to everything, the TB staff all carried on as if nothing had changed.
Daredevil and new Hulk scribe Mark Waid was characteristically verbose in the writer’s panel, having an insight or trade tip to contribute to every question or discussion as you’d imagine the most experienced creator at the table would. Waid also frequently plugged his digital comics site Thrillbent, citing a need to really push digital comics for the good of the medium and the business,...

One of, if not the, best comic convention the UK has to offer, Thought Bubble, took place this weekend at the Royal Armories in Leeds and, as we do each and every year, Blogomatic3000 were at the event soaking in the atmosphere and checking out all the attending artists, new and old – and this year saw some familiar faces return, along with a whole heap of new artists and illustrators. And of course there were the fans, who have literally come from all corners of the globe to little old Leeds.
Of course we not only cover comics here at B3K but also movies, so I thought I’d take a look at the comic-con from a movie fans perspective and bring you the Top 5 reasons why movie lovers should have been at Thought Bubble this weekend…

While today certainly feels like a slow news day, the Internet has provided a ton of great links to share with you all. I’ve felt compelled to keep my links strictly film related over the past couple of days, but I think you’ll appreciate some of the geeky, non-film stuff today. In case you’re looking for something to celebrate on hump-day this week, the MPAA created the Nc-17 rating on this day in 1990. Philip Kaufman’s Henry & June was the first to receive the new rating, and ever since he recently appeared in the Criterion closet, rumors have begun circulating that the film might get into The Collection one day. Tomorrow, if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to pick up some new prints from Mondo. Earlier today they sent out news that the Looper prints by Martin Ansin, a Dredd 3D print by Jock, and a Room 237 print by Aled Lewis would...

Judgment is coming to Mega City One, as you can see in a brand new Mondo poster for "Dredd," created by comic book artist Jock. It's just the latest collaboration between the Austin-based team and Jock, who previously rendered posters based on "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Battleship" for the boutique poster line.
See the full poster below!
The plot synopsis for "Dredd" reads as follows:
The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users...

Dredd 3D hits theaters this Friday, and in anticipation of the release of the violently action-packed film, Mondo has released this awesome poster art for the film created by Jock.
The movie currently has an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which tells you that this movie is as good as everyone says it is. This a great big screen adaptation that stays true to the comic, and I know for a fact that most of you are going to walk out of this movie very happy with what you see.
I look forward to hearing what you all think about this movie.

Judgment is Coming. It's almost time. Obey the law, or else you will be judged and sentenced immediately. Arriving in theaters this week is Dredd 3D, starring Karl Urban as the new Judge Dredd. I'll be there, seeing this film again, because it's so awesome. Entertainment Weekly has posted the latest Mondo poster designed by artist Jock (@jock4twenty) for Dredd, being revealed and sold at Fantastic Fest this week as part of the film's final premiere at the fest. I think it's simplistically bold, and badass, and I would like to get my hands on one somehow. View the full-size Jock Dredd print below. And go see Dredd 3D this weekend! Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law,...

If you recognize that reference to the Judge Dredd strip-spawning U.K. comic 2000Ad — and its alien editor “Tharg” — then you, like me, may have been waiting upwards of 35 years for a decent movie featuring Mega-City One’s top cop to arrive in cinemas (don’t get me started on the Sly Stone-starring 1995 fiasco).
Judging by the current Rotten Tomatoes rating for Dredd 3D — and my colleague Darren Franich’s enthusiastic review of the film in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly — that wait will end this Friday when the Karl Urban-toplined actioner hits screens across the country.

Well it’s been a long time coming but I’m finally back with another helping of comicbook goodness with The Back Issues. Thanks for reading and sorry for the hiatus. Spurred to write this by the resurgence of a certain Emerald Archer in the media, I went back and read Andy Diggle and Jock’s “Green Arrow: Year One.” With “Arrow” on DC and Warner Bros. upcoming tv schedule I thought looking at the modern day retelling of Green Arrow’s origin would be a good place to return to the column. You may remember the team of Diggle and Jock being mentioned by me before when I did “The Losers” for this column a while back. This was a return effort for them after “The Losers” wrapped and it was just as good as that series was. First of all let me start with the fact that this mini-series was titled “Year One,...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s star finally seems to be rising, and even if the guy’s work wasn’t so enjoyable, this would be a good thing. In fact, he’s done little that I’ve actually liked so far, but what I have seen I’ve liked very much. But mostly, he just seems like the kinda guy who rarely shaves and who swears casually–y’know, my kind of people.
Morgan is probably most well known for his portrayal as The Comedian in 2009′s Watchmen movie. I mostly still refuse to watch the movie, not just because I tend to side with Alan Moore in just about everything, but it’s largely because I just don’t have much interest in anything Watchmen-related beyond the original comic book. Having said that, what I saw in the trailers and around the internets told me that Morgan did some good work with that character,...

Having never previously covered the behemoth known as Comic-Con, I’m currently feeling woefully unprepared (underprepared?) for the experience. But years of monitoring and reporting on the news coming out of the ‘con has prepared me for something – the incredible flood of tangible marketing material that accompanies the convention. We’re not talking about panel chatter, rumors, or announcements, we’re talking hard stuff like posters and banners, material spotted out in the wild of the convention floor as often as it’s released before Preview Night even kicks off that you may one day be able to possess for yourself (and your walls). After the break, feast your eyes on every poster and banner (within reason) released at Comic-Con, an ever-evolving gallery of both pretty pictures and essential information, including such highly anticipated fare as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Pacific Rim, Dredd, and some very special original works by the likes of Mondo and Gallery...

Earlier today, we put up Ben’s footage from the London Film & Comic Con on the Dredd panel where one fan asked a question about the costume changes. Writer Alex Garland did a fantastic job explaining why they changed the costumes to accommodate the shooting and action sequences and you can see there bit here.
But, we’ve been asked to put the whole panel up and we can now oblige. For your viewing pleasure and ahead of what you’ll probably see a lot of at Comic Con, here is the full 30 minute panel from London Film & Comic Con 2012. Who says you need to go to San Diego for good Comic Book movie content?!
On the panel are Producer, Allon Reich (28 days later); Concept Artist, Jock (Battleship); Screenwriter, Alex Garland (28 days later, The Beach) and Dredd himself, Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings). Dredd is released in the UK September 7th.

Fandango has unveiled a midnight IMAX poster for The Dark Knight Rises, featuring Tom Hardy’s Bane, and it’s a beaut. There’s not much else to say, or necessary to say, just take a look.
The Dark Knight Rises comes out July 20th, but the midnight showing would obviously be the night of July 19th, if that’s in your plans. I’ll see you there if so.
Update: SuperheroHype has an image of a Dark Knight Rises poster made by Mondo and comic book artist Jock (Green Arrow: Year One, The Losers), and it also looks fantastic. That is below.

Judge Dredd is coming back to theaters, over fifteen years later and minus Sylvester Stallone. We’ve got two new production stills from Dredd, showing Dredd in action.
The new poster, shown below, features Karl Urban (Star Trek) as Dredd, covered in shadow. While the 1995 film was only loosely based on the comic strip, DNA Films is tying this new film closer to the original story. Artist Jock, who worked on numerous Judge Dredd stories, was called in to do the concept art for the film.
The new Dredd is directed by Pete Travis. You can see two stills from the set below. The first picture shows Dredd’s city as he gears up for a fight.
This second still gives us more of the action we’ll see in Dredd. In it, Dredd has already taken down four adversaries and is climbing the staircase on the way to shooting down even more enemies.

In this current day and age of movie reboots, you won’t find more hesitation towards one than MGM’s modernization of Robocop starring The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy. But the latest casting news has softened the news of reboot. THR reported that Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) will play Norton, the scientist who takes the mangled mess of Murphy, who is nearly killed in the line of duty, and creates a cyborg cop. It sounds like they are going to play up Norton’s role as someone who struggles to find a balance between creating a corporate machine and the idealistic vision he had in creating a blend of man and machine.
Oldman is one of those few actors who rarely disappoints, always playing within his part, never trying to be more than what’s asked, as seen in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy as Commissioner Gordon.

"Battleship" might not be charging into theaters until May 18, but fans lucky enough to be attending WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. this weekend will be in for a treat. In addition to Universal hosting a panel showcasing the film, director Peter Berg and star Brooklyn Decker will be signing exclusive artwork for the movie designed by comics artist Jock.
MTV News has an exclusive first look at the poster that shows off "Battleship's" alien villains. We don't know too much about the extraterrestrials, but they look pretty intimidating right here and now. And, as Jock worked as a concept designer on the film, it seems safe to say that this version is a good representation of what we'll be seeing on the big screen.

As we do each and every year, Blogomatic3000 will be attending Thought Bubble, the UK’s best comic book convention (or Sequential Art Festival as the organisers like to call it) which takes place at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
This year the con has grown from a one-day event to a huge two-day, event packed convention that features signings from some of the creme de la creme of the comic industry and appearances from the UK best independent comic creators too – perfect for discovering your next favourite comic.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.
