Those UCLA fans who wanted Chip Kelly’s departure got their wish Friday, but not in the way they expected.
In a surprising move, Kelly exited his head coaching job at UCLA for a perceived step down, agreeing to become the offensive coordinator for Ohio State.
The timing leaves UCLA and recruits in a bind. The national letter of intent signing period was Feb. 7, spring practice is approaching, and the coaching carousel has already churned. That leaves UCLA in a poor position heading into its first season in the Big Ten, where it will eventually face their old coach in a game.
Kelly had reported interest in talking with NFL teams about an offensive coordinator position. But taking the Ohio State job is viewed in many quarters as a strange step down.
In a message to UCLA alumni and fans, Bruins athletic director Martin Jarmond said a national search for a replacement had already commenced.

Star running back Reggie Bush, who became one of college sports’ most controversial athletes and gave up his Heisman Trophy award in the midst of an NCAA investigation into USC’s football program, says he’s “finally ready to tell my story.”
He’ll get that opportunity in an upcoming documentary film announced Wednesday from Believe Entertainment Group and director Kirk Fraser (ESPN’s 30 for 30: Without Bias). Bush, who played for the Trojans from 2003-2005 under head coach Pete Carroll, will serve as an executive producer on the project.
The untitled film promises to detail “the incredible untold story that led to Bush being erased from the NCAA record books and the heartbreaking loss of his Heisman Trophy.” Bush voluntarily surrendered the trophy—the most coveted in college football—in 2010 after the NCAA determined that sports agents had secretly provided Bush and members of his family with cash, travel and other expenses,...

If you watched the recent ESPN docuseries The Last Dance, chronicling the final title run of the Chicago Bulls in 1998, you may have noticed the famous “Jordan Dome” from Space Jam. The series jumps back in time for certain segments and after Jordan comes out of retirement (for the first time), he loses in the playoffs to the Orlando Magic.
Following the Bulls’ exit, Jordan began filming Space Jam in the summer of 1995. Hellbent on never losing another series, he had Warner Bros. build him a full-size basketball court so that he could practice and train during off days from shooting the movie. Sports fans know of the infamous “Jordan Dome,” of course, but there was never really any footage of the games Mj would have in it.
The series features all-too-brief moments of Jordan playing on the court with a number of big names, including Reggie Miller, Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing.

Colin Kaepernick is obviously growing more and more frustrated that the National Football League is ignoring him.
Kapernick’s agent, Jeff Nailey, and PR director Jasmine Windham sent out a Q&a press release on Thursday titled “Facts to Address The False Narratives Regarding Colin Kaepernick.” The release was apparently issued in frustration that the Pittsburgh Steelers are choosing to start an undrafted rookie, Devin Hodges from tiny Samford College, rather than enlist the former 49ers starter.
Hodges will make his debut this weekend. He is just the latest second and third-stringer to get a shot at playing in the NFL while the former 49er sits and stews.

There are few actors who could make the receipt of a Facebook friend request feel as cataclysmic as Aldis Hodge does during the unexpected turning point of Tom Shadyac’s fact-based drama “Brian Banks.” As the eponymous lead, Hodge is tasked with carrying the weight of a story that seems too wild and strange to be real: a heartbreaking tale of false accusations and wrongful convictions that literally hinges on an odd olive branch extended via social media. Hodge sells it, just as he sells the rest of an otherwise chintzy film, a Lifetime movie-like drama that falls short of engaging with the many thorny issues it dramatizes.

One of the most closely watched legal cases in the comedy world will not be going to trial.
Attorneys for Conan O’Brien, TBS and joke writer Robert Alexander Kaseberg announced on Thursday that they have settled a dispute over allegations of joke theft.

President Barack Obama went in way harder on the New England Patriots than Seahawks coach Pete Carroll did in in the Super Bowl -- unloading a ton of jokes poking fun at the champs. Obama had his A-game working as he ripped Bill Belichick, Rob Gronkowski and even attempted a Boston accent. Fittingly, the joke that fell most flat ... his Deflategate material. The Pats did not seem amused. Darrelle Revis was also at the event...

Whatcha doing over there, Pete Carroll? A hilarious Vine of the Seattle Seahawks coach is making its way around the Internet today. The clip features a confused-looking Carroll popping into the background of John Clayton's shot as the Espn reporter gives a news update on football star Adrian Peterson. After staring into the camera for a few seconds, Carroll hops back out of shot. Lol! Following the funny videobombing, Carroll took to Twitter to prove he has a good sense of humor about the innocent blunder. "After the Espn NFL Twitter account wrote, "Pete Carroll Photobomb!" Carroll replied with, "Just competing behind the scenes looking for a scoop!! Rt." The 63-year-old...

Pete Carroll deliberately called a pass play at the end of the Super Bowl to stick it to Marshawn Lynch for being a thorn in the NFL's side ... this according to Mike Epps. The comic is dead serious ... telling "Larry King Now" he believes the Seattle Seahawks organization wanted to take the ball away from Lynch at the end of the game because they didn't want him to get the glory. "They didn't want Lynch to get the Mvp.

The story behind Deflategate has been overshadowed by post-Super Bowl questions like "Why did the Seattle Seahawks throw on 2nd and goal?" and "Who is Left Shark?," but New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick sat down with David Letterman to (brusquely) answer the late night host's questions about the deflated ball controversy.
"I know you know exactly what happened. You know I know you know, and what it was was some kind of horseplay. Am I right?," Letterman asks. Belichick responds gruffly, "No." When Letterman tells the coach that Late...

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this weekly column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Fleming: I just can’t get past that a superb Super Bowl shaping up as one for the ages fell off the cliff so abruptly. Seahawks down by four, little over a minute left, both teams with timeouts. A miracle catch by Seattle by Jermaine Kearse who’d fallen on the ground. Seattle hands to the best goal line back in football, and Marshawn Lynch gets to the half yard line. I’m already thinking he scores on the next run, Seattle kicks off and Tom Brady, now down by three, has to race the Patriots up 40 yard for the game tying kick and overtime. No! Instead Seahawks coach Pete Carroll okays Russell Wilson to pass into the teeth of the Patriot defense.

"Birdman" star Michael Keaton was on "The Tonight Show" Monday night, and Jimmy Fallon said he wanted to see how good the Oscar nominee could be. So Michael and Jimmy re-enacted scenes from "Birdman" but not the real movie - a version written by school-children. The kids were just asked to write scenes for a movie called "Birdman." So watch them do some Kid Theater. Telling you, some of these "Birdman" scripts are gold. Keaton crushes it. Amazing. Events transpired yesterday during the 2015 Super Bowl that left us wondering a lot of things this morning. There were sharks, balls (both beach and foot), Seahawks coach Pete Carroll's Yolo play call and Missy Freakin' Elliot reminding us that 2001 was millions of years ago. And that was just some of the s--t that went down on Super Bowl Sunday. Does anyone have answers for us?! 1. Is Rob Gronkowski the bro-iest NFL player who ever bro'd? 2. If Katy Perry was riding the "More You Know" star, what did she teach us? 3. Also, did Hot Dog on a Stick pay for the outfit tie in? 4. Why did Pete Carroll call a slant when he had Beast Mode Marshawn Lynch on the one yard...
