Mumbai, Feb 22 (Ians) Actor, writer and director Rahul Bose, who will be seen in the upcoming web series ‘Taj – Divided by Blood’, has shared what prompted him to take up the project and also briefed about his role in the series.
Rahul, who plays Mirza Muhammad Hakim, the third son of the Mughal Emperor Humayun, said: “I felt that the role was very well-edged. I thought that the big attraction was to act opposite Naseeruddin Shah, play his fundamentalist stepbrother and portray a conflicted relationship. I think these were the two main reasons that the role was well-edged.
“I had a very fruitful conversation with Ron Scalpello (director) in terms of his conceptualisation of the character and the way it was written.”
He also talked about his interest in Mughal history, saying: “I am well-versed as anybody else who read history in school, may be a little bit more than that.

Crime Time: Scalpello Skirts the Underbelly in Generic, Capable Thriller
We’ve reached a point where something like The Corrupted, the latest offering from Britain’s Ron Scalpello, a violent and narratively convincing showcase of considerably nefarious designs of colluding cops and criminals, has come to seem a bit old-fashioned. Ably performed by a cast of some formidably notable talent joined by contemporary stars, there’s nothing essentially wrong with Scalpello’s latest, curiously written by Nick Moorcroft (best known for his St. Trinian’s comedies a decade or so prior). And yet, there’s nothing to make this remarkably compelling or eventually memorable in the mind’s eye, which may explain why it’s taken so long for the title to travel stateside, only to be unceremoniously plopped into an early January limited release.…...

Jeremy Irons, best known as Scar in the animated Lion King movie, and current cast member of Watchmen on HBO, has been cast in an upcoming biopic about “horse trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who fought years of failure and illness to make Frankel the greatest champion racehorse of all time, unbeaten in all 14 starts, and bowing out with an emotional victory in front of a capacity crowd at the Champion Stakes at Ascot Racecourse.”
Irons will produce the film written by Jim Piddock, with director Ron Scalpello (Bobby) at the helm. This sounds like it could be an interesting and inspirational movie if done well. Irons is a fantastic actor who could bring a real dignity to the role. Does this sound interesting to you?

Sam Claflin stars in a striking-looking film set in east London, but it’s all sold short by ropey storytelling and dodgy dialogue
Slipped into cinemas on the quiet, without an official press screening, Ron Scalpello’s starry, busy British crime drama proves to be a semi-entertaining mixed bags. It has a measure of ambition, strong dramatic scenes and grabby performances, not least from Timothy Spall as a property magnate looming over east London like some doubly malevolent reincarnation of Bob Hoskins’ Harold Shand from The Long Good Friday. Yet the storytelling connecting its disparate elements starts to feel dashed-off, as if somebody involved couldn’t wait for it to occupy the 10pm slot on London Live that may be its destiny. This approach short-sells both cinematographer Richard Mott’s striking framing of the capital’s moneyed hotspots and the spiky idea at the heart of Nick Moorcroft’s script:...

My Name Is Lenny is a sport drama which deals with the darker side of unlicensed boxing in the 70s focusing on Lenny McLean (Josh Helman) and his three fights with the undisputed heavyweight champion Roy ‘Pretty Boy’ Shaw (Michael Bisping).
Although the film is based in the world of unlicensed boxing, the film goes beyond the fighting and looks back at some of the events that created the man Lenny was to become. Most notably his relationship with his violent stepfather, played by Lenny’s nephew Martin Askew, who is also one of screenwriters. Through flashbacks you get a glimpse of the violence of his childhood and the drive he had to fight his way out. The film doesn’t make excuses for some of his actions, but it does give you an insight of why it was so important to be known as ‘The Guv’Nor’.

"I know what I'm gunna do then: I'm gunna knock him spark out, and be back in here for lunch." Lionsgate UK has released an official trailer for My Name Is Lenny, telling the life story of famous bare-knuckle fighter Lenny McLean, who was the first to earn the iconic nickname "the Guv'nor". Josh Helman (seen in X-Men: Apocalypse, Mad Max: Fury Road, Jack Reacher) plays McLean, and the cast includes Chanel Cresswell, Nick Moran, John Hurt, Michael Bisping, Charley Palmer Rothwell, George Russo, and Rita Tushingham. This looks like an entertaining "sports" movie, following in the footsteps of films like Bronson and Snatch. It might also play well as a double feature with Chuck. This trailer is worth a look. Here's the official UK trailer (+ poster) for Ron Scalpello's My Name Is Lenny, direct from YouTube: Explosive & brutal, My Name Is Lenny is based on the true story...

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.

Sometimes I've gotten so angry that it felt as though steam would blow out of my ears and the top of my head would blow off, like a cartoon character. A similar depth of emotion roils through Ron Scalpello's Offender. The film seethes with anger about England's treatment of young offenders, especially the institutions where law-breakers between the ages of 18 and 21 are housed in overcrowded conditions under the oversight of guards who, by and large, don't give a toss about the young men in their charge. The script by Paul Van Carter, however, confuses the issue by introducing a protagonist who assaults a police officer without apparent provocation and then smiles when he is sentenced to two years behind bars. Tommy (Joe Cole)...

Robert Pattinson Mission: Blacklist movie: Filming in August? Mission: Blacklist is not the upcoming fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise starring Tom Cruise. For the time being, that’s concisely called Mission: Impossible 5. So, what’s Mission: Blacklist? Well, as every ardent Robert Pattinson fan will tell you, that’s a Pattinson movie project initially announced in early May 2012. Pattinson is attached to this Embankment Films-financed (or to-be-financed) production based on Eric Maddox and Davin Seay’s book Mission: Black List #1 - The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein - As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture. But just in case, here’s the brief Mission: Blacklist synopsis found on the Embankment Films website: Unlike other Interrogators fresh out of training, Eric Maddox (Robert Pattinson) has a brilliant and beautiful mind. Stars: Joe Cole, English Frank, Kimberley Nixon, Shaun Dooley, Tyson Oba | Written by Paul Van Carter | Directed by Ron Scalpello
Offender would lay claim to be the first film set against the ‘burning backdrop’ of the London riots. That would a slightly tenuous claim to be made, however, as the riots are ultimately rather incidental to the film’s narrative. Our ‘hero’ is Tommy, played by Joe Cole (no, not that Joe Cole – though hopefully he’ll one day star in a film alongside Ben Foster (this one, not that one) and Tom Cruise (this one, not that one) in a film about English nearly men). Tommy is a builder who goes out with probation officer Elsie (Fresh Meat’s Kimberley Nixon) and is going to have a little baby with her. Unfortunately, Elsie runs foul of some unpleasant young men who have been a robbin’ and a murderin’ during the riots.

(Alison Klayman, 2012, Us) Ai Weiwei, Danqing Chen, Ying Gao. 91 mins
Art and activism merge in this fascinating inside portrait of China's best known artist, which conveys both the roots of Ai's provocations and the authorities' paranoid responses to them. He comes across as a fearless creator, a reluctant hero, a committed campaigner and a fallible human being, treading a perilous line between the adoring global art market and China's Kafkaesque state apparatus.

(Fernando Meirelles, 2011, UK/Aus/Fra/Bra) Rachel Weisz, Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law. 110 mins
Suffering from a surfeit of international stars and locations, this join-the-dots drama zips between a series of emotional episodes without ever gaining much momentum.

Setting its scene against the backdrop of the London Riots of 2011 director Ron Scalpello’s feature debut Offender is a tough revenge story which takes place in a notorious young offender’s institute.
Featuring some bright young British talent the film is out in UK cinemas right now and Andrew Jones had the chance to sit down with the two leads, Joe Cole and Malachi Kirby, to talk about the film and their respective roles.

London teen riot vengeance gets a lame and implausible face in a disappointingly tame film
Waiting for Britain's answer to A Prophet, or an update of Scum? Keep waiting. London teen Tommy is well 'ard. When his pregnant sweetheart falls victim to gangland thugs amid last year's riots, he's not having it. He will have his vengeance in this world, or in the young offenders' institution where he gets himself incarcerated to hunt down his prey. First-time director Ron Scalpello seems out only to shock with brutality, but the violence proves disappointingly tame. The plot and characters are lame and implausible, the dialogue is banal and the acting mediocre. Not an imprisonable offence, but nearly.
Rating: 1/5
