After celebrating its three Oscar nominations for Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here” with the same excitement it normally reserves for the soccer World Cup, Brazil went into overdrive when it took home the best international feature statuette.
The Sambadrome at Rio de Janeiro Carnival was hosting processions when it erupted in jubilation as the Oscar win for “I’m Still Here” was announced by the Carnival commentator. The period political drama was already part of the event as best actress nominee Fernanda Torres was named one of the Carnival’s muses.
Brazilian president Lula issued a statement that “Today is a day to feel even prouder of being Brazilian, proud of our cinema, our artists and above all proud of our democracy. A recognition to this extraordinary work which showed Brazil and the world the importance of the struggle against authoritarianism.”

And now for the final word on who will win the gold Sunday at the 97th Oscars.
Since Cannes in May I have been reviewing the movies, assessing their awards potential, predicting the Oscar nominations, and now finally here is my best and Final guess as to who and what will emerge triumphant in all 23 categories for the 2025 Academy Awards. So much has been written, so much has been talked about, and actually overall for me it has been a swell year for movies, at least good ones, or at the very least enough good ones to make this lineup of nominees for Oscars a deserving one.
Let me caution these are my predictions, some still shaky, but not necessarily what I might have voted for. In other words, this is not a wish list but rather a reflection of where the long and ever-unwinding road stood as Oscar balloting ended on February 18 at 5 p.

Brazil’s Rt Features, producer of Walter Salles’ Oscar-nominated “I’m Still Here,” is backing “Porto” director Gabe Klinger’s São Paulo-set wine world dramedy “Isabel,” which is currently in post-production.
“Porto,” the director’s previous film, executive produced by Jim Jarmusch, was acquired for theatrical distribution in over forty markets after its San Sebastián premiere in 2016.
“Isabel” tells the story of a woman in her early 50s who wants to open her own wine bar after being the head sommellière for a Michelin-starred restaurant. The feature-length project was shot in December on location in São Paulo. Klinger directed “Isabel” from an original screenplay he wrote in collaboration with lead actress Marina Person. Other cast members include Caio Horowicz (“I’m Still Here”) and John Ortiz (“American Fiction”).
In the film, a woman endangers her sanity and relationships to open an independent business, which Klinger alludes is “a thinly veiled metaphor for filmmaking.

More than 10,600 registered Gold Derby users voted for the 2025 Gold Derby Film Award winners — an all-time record — and they picked Brazil’s political biopic I’m Still Here as Best Picture. Scroll down for our list of winners in all 22 categories and to watch many individual acceptance speech videos.
I’m Still Here defeated an eclectic group of rivals for Best Picture, including fellow international films All We Imagine as Light and Emilia Pérez, big-budget blockbusters Dune: Part Two and Wicked, indie comedy Anora, epic immigration tale The Brutalist, tennis love triangle Challengers, papal thriller Conclave, and body-horror satire The Substance. On the morning of the 97th Oscar nominations, the words “nominees to be determined” were on everyone’s mind. Half of the Best Picture nominees — “The Brutalist,” “Emilia Pérez,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys,” and “The Substance” — were announced without specific details over which producers would be eligible to attend and accept on the film’s behalf if it were to win. Animated Feature contenders “Flow” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” and Best Documentary Feature nominee “Sugarcane” were also announced without producers. The omissions sparked enough discussion that The Academy began selling “Nominees to Be Determined” tee shirts on its website.
The Academy determined the remaining nominations on Monday, February 10, announcing the producers for each remaining film. The list came with some notable omissions, particularly in the case of “The Brutalist.” Joining Brady Corbet as nominees are producers Nick Gordon, Brian Young, Andrew Morrison, and D.J. When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its Oscar nominations on Jan. 22, it was surprising to see quite a few films nominated for best picture, best animated feature and best documentary feature listed alongside a mention that specific nominees were “still to be determined.”
In some cases, this was because the Producers Guild of America, to which the Academy defers on best picture nominee credits, had not yet determined which producers were awards-eligible. In other cases, contenders were simply late turning in their own paperwork.
But the bottom line is that on Monday, the Academy shared a list of which individuals designated as nominees had been confirmed by the organization for Oscar nominations in those categories.
The newly confirmed nominees, who bring the total number of individuals nominated for awards at the 97th Oscars to 220, are as follows:

The Academy has issued a list of eligible producers in the Animated Feature, Documentary Feature and Best Picture categories, with the list making “Emilia Pérez” director Jacques Audiard a rare four-time nominee this year and increasing the tally for “The Substance” director Coralie Fargeat and “The Brutalist” director Brady Corbet from two nominations to three.
Audiard is now nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Song. He joins a short list of quadruple nominees for the same film, which also includes Orson Welles for “Citizen Kane” (with the Best Picture nom officially going to his company), Warren Beatty for “Heaven Can Wait” and “Reds,” the Coen brothers for “No Country for Old Men” (the editing nod under a pseudonym), Alfonso Cuarón for “Roma” and Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland.”
Farget and Corbet also have nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, with the Best Picture nominations adding to their totals.

Emilia Pérez leads the 2025 Oscar nominations, which were revealed Thursday morning.
The film scored 13 noms, setting a record for a non-English-language film. That surpasses the previous record holders, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each earned 10.
Following Emilia Pérez were The Brutalist and Wicked, which tied with 10 noms apiece. A Complete Unknown and Conclave followed with eight mentions each.
All five of those films will compete for best picture with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys and The Substance. Coralie Fargeat, who directed the latter film, was the only female to be nominated in the best directing category, and also scored a writing nom, while star Demi Moore landed the first Oscar nom of her career, as did Isabella Rossellini for Conclave.
Karla Sofía Gascón, the Spanish-born star of Emilia Pérez, was nominated for best actress, making her the first openly transgender performer to be so honored.

While it looked like James Gray was going to follow up Armageddon Time with either a John F. Kennedy biopic or the ghost story Ezekiel Moses, one of America’s great filmmakers will be instead shifting gears to a new project.
Gray will next direct Paper Tiger, based on his own script, with a cast led by Adam Driver and Armageddon Time stars Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway. With production kicking off early next year, Paper Tiger is described as a tense and gritty story of two brothers who pursue the American Dream, only to become entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true. As they try to navigate their way through an ever-more dangerous world of corruption and violence, they find themselves and their family brutally terrorized by the Russian “Mafiya.” Their bond begins to fray, and betrayal—once utterly unthinkable—now becomes all too possible.
