After a seven-year break, FX’s anthology series “Feud” is back with another installment of rivalry and gossip titled “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” telling the story of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and a high society New York City socialite group known as The Swans, which includes Babe Paley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart), Ann Woodward (Demi Moore) and Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald). The previous season of the Ryan Murphy docudrama that starred Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis nabbed 18 Emmy Award nominations and two wins. “When I first heard that this was the direction it was going, and then got the scripts and songs, I was in heaven,” admits Christopher Gattelli of “Schmigadoon!” Season 2. The choreographer left behind the Rodgers and Hammerstein golden age from Season 1 of the Apple TV+ series, and instead moved into the sexier, darker era of the 1960s and 1970s. The jazz hands of Bob Fosse ruled this period of musical theater, and Gattelli had a full memory stored in “the databank” in his head. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Earlier in his career, Gattelli performed in “Fosse” on Broadway. a musical revue of the legendary choreographer’s signature dances. “I felt like I had so much of his vocabulary in my body,” says Gattelli, which set him up for success on this series. He latched on to the lyric, “a fantastical farrago” from the opening number “Welcome to Schmicago” as a source of inspiration.

If Season 1 of “Schmigadoon!” needed to nail the candy-colored vibes of an MGM musical, Season 2 does the same dance — but backwards and in heels and probably stockings with a run or two. The second season of the Apple TV+ series set an equally ambitious production task for itself by turning to the messier, sharp-elbowed, darkly funny musicals of the ’70s.
The cast had to contend with the compositional whiplash of Kander and Ebb and Sondheim (to say nothing of Aaron Tveit’s hippie commune). But production designer Jamie Walker McCall’s brief was to create a musical version of Chicago – canonically, a Schmicago – that would look as grimy and gross as a Kristin Chenoweth-run orphanage that also still reflected the fun and theatricality of the series. As McCall conceptualized the show’s Schmicago, she looked beyond the “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” and “Sweeney Todd” references embedded in the script to something more surprising: “Mary Poppins.

“It’s really exciting to see the ways that all of these really talented performers who just needed an opportunity, just needed a chance to show that they have the goods, now have opportunities beyond our show,” says “Pose” co-creator and showrunner Steven Canals about how his series has opened doors for the Black and brown artists from the queer community who made up the show’s cast for its three seasons. “I hope that the industry at large continues to use ‘Pose’ as a case study to say, this is what we really should continue to do.” We talked with Canals for our “FX Writing for Inclusion” panel. How does one become a production designer? For Tom Hammock (“Them”), it actually started in a most unusual way: he “stumbled into it” by milking spiders for their venom. “Mank” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Production Design with a win on April 10 at the Art Directors Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over two of its Oscar rivals — “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” — plus “Mulan” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Tenet,” which won the fantasy prize at the Adg Awards on Saturday; the fifth Oscar nominee, “The Father,” was not in contention here.
The other Adg winners were the contemporary film “Da 5 Bloods” and the animated film “Soul.”
The Adg Awards were bestowed during a virtual ceremony on April 10. Ryan Murphy was feted with the Cinematic Imagery Award.

David Fincher’s “Mank,” Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” and Pete Docter’s “Soul” were the big film winners at the 25th annual Art Directors Guild Awards Saturday evening, taking production design honors for period, fantasy, contemporary, and animated feature, respectively. Additionally, “The Mandalorian,” “Ozark,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” were among the TV winners at the ceremony, which bodes well for “The Mandalorian” and “The Queen’s Gambit’s” Emmy prospects in the craft category.
The annual awards fete the finest production design in movies, TV, commercials, music videos, and animated features in 12 categories.
The monochromatic “Mank” is the only film that took home an Adg award that is competing for Best Picture. Pixar’s “Soul” is the favorite for Best Animated Feature. Other Adg nominees included Oscar hopefuls “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Bold and vibrant. Glitz and glamour. Spectacular locations. Those words have become synonymous with the world of Ryan Murphy. The stories might be vastly different, but audiences across the worlds of TV and film know a Ryan Murphy set when they see one.
The Art Directors Guild honors the showrunner with its Cinematic Imagery Award at the 25th Annual Adg Awards on April 10.
One of the ingredients of Murphy’s secret sauce is his repeat collaborations with key department heads in production and costume design, as well as in hair and makeup — relying on major players behind the scenes to help create his aesthetic and keep it uniform, whether he’s going after something dark and sinister or bright and glowing.
Production designer Jamie Walker McCall, who worked with Murphy on “American Crime Story” and “Pose,” created the glitz and glamour of Broadway in the film adaptation of “The Prom.

Much of Ryan Murphy’s star-studded “The Prom” is set in Indiana, around the high school that is the location of the film’s title event. But the first 13 minutes of the movie take place on a block of the Broadway theater district in New York. That’s where Meryl Streep and James Corden are introduced, having flopped in a musical of the Eleanor Roosevelt story. They seek refuge at the famed Sardi’s restaurant across the street, teaming up with Andrew Rannells’s bartender and Nicole Kidman’s showgirl, and setting the plot in motion.
During the first two musical numbers in the film (now streaming on Netflix), that stretch of 44th Street is dazzlingly bright and alive. [Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for the “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” Episode 7, “Creator/Destroyer.”]
The penultimate episode of “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” is almost like a checklist of all the challenges a director might face in crafting an episode of TV. For Matt Bomer, that’s exactly why it made for the perfect directorial debut.
“We had two child protagonists in the first couple acts of the episode, so you’re already on child hours. We’re in three different countries, five different cities. Party scenes, trading floor scenes, a period piece,” Bomer told IndieWire. “I was so grateful to be thrown so many challenges my first time directing because I was able to tick off so many boxes of things that I don’t have to worry about any more. Half of it was just getting it done and knowing you can do it and do it on schedule.”

Wednesday’s episode of American Crime Story: Versace marks the directorial debut of actor Matt Bomer, who — at the risk of sounding “so 2018” — says he was “truly blessed” to get to work on the FX drama.
“When Ryan Murphy called and asked me to do this — after I passed out, regained consciousness and said yes — I knew that it was a serious responsibility,” the actor tells TVLine. “I’d been offered directing jobs before, but they were jobs I was also acting in, and I wanted my first directing experience to be the full-meal deal. I wanted to really do it,...

When it comes to the Emmys, gender representation has always been a bit of a struggle behind the scenes. In non-acting categories, especially when it comes to technical awards, there’s a lack of female representation that’s persisted throughout the industry. But this year, there are bright spots to be found.
This is not a complete representation of all of the year’s nominees — there were many other female nominees whose work was noteworthy — but here is a selection of the strides women made in 2017, often in categories largely dominated by men.
Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance
“BoJack Horseman” (Netflix): Kristen Schaal as Sarah Lynn in “That’s Too Much, Man!” “F Is For Family” (Netflix): Mo Collins as Ginny, Jimmy Fitzsimmons, Lex, Ben, and Cutie Pie in the episode “Pray Away” “The Simpsons” (Fox): Nancy Cartwright as Bart Simpson in “Looking for Mr. Goodbart”
