Evangeline and Bring It On: Cheer or Die director Karen Lam drew inspiration from Japanese films in general and an experimental silent film called Pages of Madness in particular when crafting her horror movie The Curse of Willow Song – and it seems to have turned out pretty well, as Fangoria reminds us that The Curse of Willow Song won the Best British Columbia Film award when it premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival way back in 2020. Now the film is finally making its way to DVD and digital, thanks to Uncork’d Entertainment, and a trailer can be seen in the embed above.
The DVD and digital release is scheduled for September 26th.

Never underestimate a trio of curious teens…. Tough girl Summer, her smartmouth younger brother Colin and his pushover best friend Jason find themselves in a cottage in the woods when the siblings’ dad and his girlfriend take them on a low-budget getaway. Denver native Emilie Upczak moved to Trinidad and Tobago and became Creative Director of the Trinidad + Tobago Film Festival where she worked for ten years. At that time, she not only helped set up the only Caribbean Film Industry Center but began making a fiction feature film about human trafficking.
She enlisted the prize winning Dp Nancy Schreiberwho also recently shot Ondi Timoner’s Robert Mapplethorpe biopic Mapplethorpe who was recently honored at the High Falls Film Festival, an annual event celebrating female filmmakers with the Susan B. I like when a director knows what he/she wants from his/her film — even if the goal is to entertain on a level that ensures its legacy falls short of cinematic greatness. Some of my favorite movies are those that demand to be re-watched not for comprehension’s sake or to acknowledge metaphor underneath formal expertise, but because they’re fun. Horror/comedy is ripe for delivering exactly that result with its ability for work to simultaneously excel as an example of the genre’s common tropes and a subversion of them. Director Peter Ricq knows this and decides to lay everything on the line with cowriters Phil Ivanusic and Davila LeBlanc in Dead Shack. They clearly separate good and evil, letting each loose within a contained setting to battle to the death.
So they start things off with a rousing prologue playing with the zombie motif as lark before revealing it as truth.

"Claire was complicated... she was dangerous." Saban Films has debuted the new official theatrical trailer an indie drama titled Come and Find Me, a mysterious thriller about a missing woman. The first trailer we posted for this, which is actually even longer than this one below, was just a teaser - this is the final full trailer. Aaron Paul stars in this, with Annabelle Wallis, Garret Dillahunt, Valerie Tian, Zachary Knighton and Terry Chen. When his girlfriend goes missing, David tracks down her whereabouts after he realizes she's not who she was pretending to be. This film seems to turn into some kind of violent action thriller in the second half, which makes me a little bit concerned, but you never know - it still might be good. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Zack Whedon's Come and Find Me, direct from YouTube: David (Aaron Paul) and Claire...

Indie drama Come and Find Me has today unveiled its first teaser trailer, sending Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul off on a wild goose chase in a bid to find his missing girlfriend (Peaky Blinders‘ Annabelle Wallis) who has vanished without rhyme or reason.
Written and directed by Zack Whedon (Halt and Catch Fire, Fringe), the mystery thriller begins by introducing David (Paul) and Claire’s (Wallis) picture-perfect relationship. Everything is rosy, and it isn’t long before the pair fall deeply and madly in love. One day, David senses trouble in paradise, before discovering that his significant other has disappeared without so much of a warning. Crushed, Aaron Paul’s protagonist scrambles across town, though slowly but surely the mysteries that he uncovers leads him to believe that Claire has been masking a double life all along.

"Moving Parts," a film by Trinidad-based, American director, Emilie Upczak, whose crowdfunding campaign has only 11 days to go, is a story about two women from two opposite corners of the world brought together through circumstances beyond their control. Although set in the Caribbean, the film is globally relevant as it focuses on the issue of human trafficking.
“Moving Parts takes a fictional look at a very real issue”, Upczak said. “The film’s protagonist Zhenzhen, is a Chinese immigrant who is smuggled into Trinidad to be with her brother Wei following the death of their father. A tragic event leaves Zhenzhen vulnerable and only through the help of a neighboring art gallerist Evelyn and the restaurant’s Cook, does she have a chance at life”.
Emilie Upczak is a filmmaker and festival programmer specifically interested in ritual practice and sexual politics. These interests were first sparked after she spent two-years traveling throughout Southeast Asia, where she encountered numerous religious practices and worked as an escort in a hostess club in Tokyo. Since then, Emilie has produced short films and experimental video installations. Most recently, she was the Creative Director of the trinidad+tobago film festival in charge of the Caribbean Film Mart and Caribbean Film Database.
“We decided to crowd-fund the film in order to build our core audience and to engage individuals in our fundraising process,” she said. “We have been successful in engaging local government support and now we are turning to private sector and individuals”.
The film has been in development for two years and is now in the pre-production stage. Principal photography is set to begin in the Spring with a filming schedule of one month. One of the unique facets of the film is the female roster of most heads of departments. This line up includes, DoP Nancy Schreiber, Consulting Producer Annabelle Mullen, First Assistant Director Roma Zachemba, Co-Producers Rhonda Chan Soo and Rhian Vialva, Production Designer Shannon Alonzo and PR/Social Media Aurora Herrera.
Upczak noted, “I feel very strongly about having this film made by women and also by women primarily from the Caribbean.”
The cast includes Canadian actresses Valerie Tian known for her role as Su-Chin in "Juno" and Burns in "21 Jumpstreet" and Kandyse McClure known for her role as Officer Anastasia Dualla in "Battlestar Galactica."

Words and Pictures
Starring Clive Owen, Juliette Binoche, Amy Brenneman, Bruce Davison, Valerie Tian

USA, 2014
It is quite uncommon to come across a literate romance comedy featuring middle-aged academics engaging in conflicting ideologies and clashing personalities that eventually leads to an affair of the heart. Refreshingly, the engaging but uneven Words and Pictures dares to break up the monotony among the larger-than-life comic book superheroes, sci-fi spectacles and raunchy comedies that saturate the big screen in the free-for-all summertime movie season.
Actually, it is also nice to see grown-up love stories that incorporate a sense of intellectualism, artistry and Hepburn/Tracy-inspired sparring. Director Fred Schepisi (“Roxanne”) and screenwriter Gerald Di Pego create an artsy bubble where two opinionated and flawed educators (Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche) tangle in the arena of words and pictures. Chicago – “Words and Pictures” is a bit twee. In the film’s central debate between which medium has more influence, there was a drunken writer, prep students straight out of “Dead Poet’s Society” and cutesy romance. But there was also Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche at the top of their performance games, and they uplifted all these regular story elements.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Films about redemption are always welcome, and the two instructors at the prep school representing words (English teacher) and pictures (art) get to redeem themselves through the debate. Despite the number of clichés in the script – by Gerald Di Pego – Clive Owens and Juliette Binoche remain sincere and authentic, which overcomes some the groan-inducing prep school moments. And points have to be given for presenting a story about adults maneuvering in the world, right in the middle of summer superhero season. The film may not end the words versus pictures face-off,...

Comedy can succeed based on either its relatability or sheer absurdity, and “A.C.O.D.” favors the former approach, while not entirely forgoing the latter. Within its first few moments, this movie informs us that 54% of people are adult children of divorce, or A.C.O.D. Statistically, you’re likely to fall within that group (or closely know someone who does), making many of the jokes and observations here hit perhaps a little too close to home, though not too closely not to laugh. One such A.C.O.D. is Carter (Adam Scott), who is helping his younger brother, Trey (Clark Duke), plan his wedding. The hitch isn’t that Trey has only been dating his girlfriend (Valerie Tian) for a few months, but instead its that Carter and Trey’s parents can’t be in the same room together. Carter’s plans to get his mother (Catherine O’Hara) and father (Richard Jenkins) on civil terms backfires,...

Stu Zicherman's amusing but formulaic man-in-crisis comedy has neither a fully realised protagonist nor a clear message
The chief protagonist of Acod, a contraction of Adult Children of Divorce, is Carter, a boyish restaurant owner played by Adam Scott. Joining him for Stu Zicherman's first outing as a director are Richard Jenkins, as Carter's hot-blooded father Hugh, and veteran Catherine O'Hara, who plays his spurned mother Melissa. To Carter's eternal chagrin, both his parents remarried – since when he's worked hard to keep them apart.

Chicago – Sarah Bolger is a truly lovely actress. She delivered one of the best child performances of all time in Jim Sheridan’s 2002 family drama, “In America,” and over the last decade, has blossomed into a real screen beauty. Hopefully it will only be a matter of time before the actress starts getting offered projects more worthy of her abilities. No one this lovely should be sentenced to a film as dreary as “The Moth Diaries.”
Here is one of the most curiously amateurish thrillers in many a moon. It was directed by Mary Harron, whose track record up until now has been peerless (“I Shot Andy Warhol,” “American Psycho,” “The Notorious Bettie Page”). The wit and urgency of her earlier work appears to have evaporated entirely from this flat horror fantasy with a scare factor equivalent to a particularly cheesy episode of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Characters...

This is a reprint of our review from the Venice Film Festival.
It's remarkably tough to get any film financed, at least one that doesn't have 3D talking animals from a popular cartoon series. So it's no surprise that some filmmakers, for all their best efforts, can go three, four, five or more years between pictures. Worryingly, it seems to be doubly true for female directors. Look at Kimberley Pierce, who's only made one film in the twelve years since "Boys Don't Cry," or Tamara Jenkins, for whom nearly a decade separated "Slums of Beverley Hills" and "The Savages," or even Kathryn Bigelow, who might be an Oscar-winner now, but had a six-year break before "The Hurt Locker." One of the key examples here is Mary Harron, who since her 1996 debut "I Shot Andy Warhol" had only made two other films: "American Psycho," and the biopic "The Notorious Bettie Page,...

Title: The Moth Diaries Directed By: Mary Harron Starring: Sarah Bolger, Lily Cole, Sarah Gadon, Valerie Tian, Melissa Farman, Deena Aziz, Laurence Hamelin, Scott Speedman Of course you want a horror movie to be a good film, but there’s no denying that this genre can get away with a lot; mask bad performances with intense suspense or fill in plot holes using bloody good fun. However, when you’re an all-around failure like The Moth Diaries, there’s no successful asset to use as a crutch, and the whole production suffers exponentially for it. After the untimely death of her father, Rebecca (Sarah Bolger) has found solace in her home away from [ Read More ]...

On paper, "21 Jump Street" was not an enticing proposition. A reboot of a 1980s TV series with a ludicrous premise -- fresh-faced cops go undercover as high school students. Produced by Neal Moritz, a man whose last attempt at an action-comedy reboot of a famous property was the dreadful "The Green Hornet." Directed by two first-time live-action feature directors. Written by the man behind "Project X." And starring Jonah Hill, coming off a terrible R-rated comedy flop, in "The Sitter," and Channing Tatum, a man whose previous turns weren't so much performed as whittled out of wood.
And yet, "21 Jump Street" was a success, opening to a hugely impressive $35 million over the weekend. And more importantly, it was also really, really good, arguably the best studio movie of this young year to date, and one of the funniest comedies in years. So what happened? What separated the film, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller,...

The Moth Diaries Trailer. Mary Harron‘s The Moth Diaries (2011) movie trailer stars Lily Cole, Sarah Bolger, Scott Speedman, Anne Day-Jones, and Sarah Gadon. The Moth Diaries‘ plot synopsis: “Adolescence is and always will be a time of intense emotional confusion, especially if you spend it in a closed environment. That’s the case with Rebecca, a young girl haunted by her father’s suicide, who is a student at an exclusive female boarding school.
She pours her heart out in a diary, much of it focused on Lucy, her beloved roommate. Their relationship changes drastically with the arrival of a mysterious new student, Ernessa. As Lucy abandons her for this new girl, Rebecca becomes consumed with thoughts of jealousy and suspicion — Ernessa is dangerous, evil, a vampire. Is there any truth to all this or is Rebecca slipping into insanity?”

"I wonder what her secret is?" IFC Films has unveiled the official trailer via Yahoo for the new film from American Psycho director Mary Harron, a horror-thriller called The Moth Diaries, that premiered at Tiff last year. Set at an all-girls boarding school, it stars Sarah Bolger and Lily Cole as two students who have deep, dark secrets that seem to involve the supernatural. Or vampires. Lily Cole plays the really creepy one, but they don't give away too much in this, as far as I can tell. The supporting cast also includes Scott Speedman, Sarah Gadon, Valerie Tian and Judy Parfitt. If you're up for more vampire girls, give this a shot. Watch the first official trailer for Mary Harron's The Moth Diaries, in high def from Yahoo: Rebecca (Sarah Bolger) is suspicious of Ernessa (Lily Cole), the new arrival at her boarding school. But is Rebecca just...
