Jussie Smollett declared he was weary of trying to explain away his past troubles while Denzel Washington foreshadowed an impending break from being in front of the camera during the just-wrapped American Black Film Festival, which also brought out stars including Issa Rae, Kenya Barris and Kerry Washington.
The festival, held in Miami Beach’s South Beach, served as a launching pad for ABFF’s Queer Lens Brunch with GLAAD, featuring Smollett on a panel promoting his second feature, The Lost Holliday, an official festival selection that he co-wrote, produced and directed. It stars Smollett as a man whose husband is killed just as the couple was adopting their daughter; he must also contend with the mother-in-law he never met, played by Vivica A. Fox.

Eight years after his Oscar-nominated performance in Fences, Denzel Washington is returning to the world of August Wilson: The actor/director/producer/national treasure is producing a new adaptation of the late playwright’s The Piano Lesson, directed by his son, Malcolm Washington. The new film carries over much of the cast from the show’s recent Broadway revival — including Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington. Read on to learn more about this particular Lesson.
Set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, The Piano Lesson follows the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles household and an heirloom, the family piano, which documents the family history through carvings made by their enslaved ancestor.
Washington has a deep connection to Wilson’s work: He directed and starred in 2016’s Fences, produced Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and in the past has spoken of his desire...

If there was a decade that truly helped to shape the future of the crime thriller genre, it was undoubtedly the 1990s. The era churned out numerous movies that have become the benchmark for how to craft a movie about the hunt for a serial killer, or flashing femme fatales with a penchant for murder. Movies such as The Silence of the Lambs, Misery, Se7en and Basic Instinct set a benchmark for not only quality in the crime flick, but also by delivering iconic sequences that are synonymous within the genre. Lambs had Anthony Hopkins’ wonderful Chianti sipping performance, Misery gleefully smashed ankles, Se7en had the tragic head in a box scene, while Basic Instinct allowed Sharon Stone to show more than just her acting ability. The point is, by the time the movie we’re focusing on in this episode was released in 1999, audiences had preconceived expectations, thanks...

It seems to have been a week full of nostalgia for Netflix’s viewers as they suddenly brought two old flicks to the streaming’s global top. Following Mark Wahlberg’s 2005 crime drama Four Brothers, the Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington thriller Safe House suddenly got a second chance twelve years after its initial release.
According to the recent data from FlixPatrol, Safe House is currently holding a third spot on Netflix’s global top 10, surpassed only by Four Brothers and the streaming’s newest horror Under Paris.
The movie follows CIA officer Matt Weston, portrayed by Reynolds, who is tasked to keep an eye on a safe house where other officers are interrogating Tobin Frost, played by Washington, a fugitive accused of betrayal.
Soon the house gets attacked by mercenaries, and Weston has no other choice but to keep sticking to his mission fleeing alongside Frost that he’s in charge of looking after.

Zack Snyder has plans to make a film on one of the greatest heroes in American history, George Washington. While other presidents like Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon, and even George W. Bush were brought to the screen, the Founding Father’s story is yet to be told.
Surprisingly, Snyder’s intention is to make a full-blown action movie like 300, showing Washington as a war hero. It is also possible that he could bring action stars like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise to play the central character.

If the movie gets made, it would be one of the most stylized depictions of an American president in films. Ever since Snyder made this desire public, some people opposed the idea, sharing that Washington’s story was more of a drama rather than an action-packed war movie.

Kerry Washington, who loves a fresh, youthful aesthetic, has been serving stunning looks at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival with her signature style that often blends classic and contemporary.
Her latest red carpet outfits, which included a red Pvc fringe dress at the Tribeca premiere of The Knife and a pink tweed ensemble at the Chanel Tribeca luncheon, instantly grabbed my attention. Styling duo Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn put together both looks, which, although hard to replicate and pull off, perfectly captured Kerry’s sense of style and daring fashion choices.

“Gladiator” changed Russell Crowe’s life. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Maximus in Ridley Scott’s Roman Empire epic and spent a few years as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The film means a lot to him personally. So he’s having some mixed feelings about “Gladiator II,” Scott’s upcoming sequel starring Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal as Maximus’ son, Lucius.
Spoiler alert for a 24-year-old movie: Maximus dies at the end of “Gladiator.” So Crowe is not in “Gladiator II,” and he’s not involved with the production. In an interview with radio host Kyle Meredith, Crowe admitted to being “slightly uncomfortable” with the fact that they’re making another “Gladiator” film.
“Because of course, I’m dead, and I have no say in what gets done,” he explained, with a little bit of a wry smile. “A couple of things that I’ve heard,...

It is a truth universally acknowledged that there are only two viable career options for retired boxers: selling plastic kitchen crap in infomercials, and drinking yourself into a lonely death of despair until you get talked into training a smart-ass young fighter and rediscover your thirst for life. If anyone is on the fence about which path to choose after hanging up their gloves, Vincent Grashaw’s “Bang Bang” provides a good illustration of both paths.
In the 1980s, the city of Detroit was enthralled by the boxing rivalry between Darnell Washington (Glenn Plummer) and Bernard “Bang Bang” Rozyski (Tim Blake Nelson), two hometown heroes whose eventual fight was among the decade’s most highly anticipated sporting events. Not only did Washington win the fight, he’s won pretty much everything else since. After making a fortune selling his trademarked juicers, he now presides over a Detroit business empire and...

The last time author A. J. Quinnell's revenge thriller Man On Fire was brought to our screens in 2004, it gave us one of Denzel Washington's best movies. After years of working hard in Hollywood, Glen Powell has entered his movie star era, culminating with Hit Man, streaming June 7 on Netflix. But some things never change, no matter how big he gets. For one, he still brings his parents everywhere. They visit his sets, troll him at movie premieres, and even cameo in his movies.
It’s a tradition that dates back to Powell’s earliest roles; when he was still a teenager, his mom drove him from their Austin home to Shreveport, Louisiana, to audition for Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters, and his parents joined him on set as extras when he did his scene for Washington. Neither Glen Sr. nor Cyndy Powell had experience in Hollywood: He’s an executive coach and she’s a former staff member of the Reagan White House. But when their son appeared on set, both could tell he had something special.

In films, the leading actor is often referred to as the figure with the majority of screen time, and in most cases, they’re the one who gets the shot at the Best Actor accolade in major Award events. But there have been instances when this wasn’t the case.
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
For example, Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing everyone’s favorite cannibal in The Silence of the Lambs, even though he appeared onscreen for a mere 24 minutes. However, in The Godfather‘s case, Marlon Brando nabbed the nod for Best Actor at the Oscars, even though Al Pacino fit that bracket on paper.
Ethan Hawke also found himself on a similar boat after starring opposite Denzel Washington in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day, which earned the latter an Oscar for Best Actor.

With the cameras set to roll shortly, we all could have predicted that the casting announcements for writer/director Rian Johnson's third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, would start with all speed. On the heels of news about Josh O'Connor, Cailee Spaeny and Andrew Scott joining the ensemble, now we have word of Glenn Close and Kerry Washington joining them.
Daniel Craig, of course, is returning to star as southern-fried detective Benoit Blanc, but the specific detail of what sort of mystery he'll be digging into this time is being kept quiet for now. Nor do we know what Close or Washington will be up to in the movie.
We do at least know where they'll all be – Johnson is gearing up to film in London starting next month. The casting drip feed has turned into a torrent, and there no doubt will be more to come…...

Close and Washington join a cast of Andrew Scott, Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny who have previously been announced as the latest cast members to join Daniel Craig who reprises his role as Benoit Blanc.

Johnson is writing and directing the third installment of ‘Knives Out’. He is also producing it with his T-Street partner Ram Bergman, who worked on the first two films. The latest project is expected to go into production soon and is scheduled to be released in 2025.
Washington is best known for portraying Olivia Pope in the ABC drama ‘Scandal.’ Close most recently starred in Ron Howard’s ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ for Netflix.

Ethan Hawke, with a career peppered with critical acclaim and Academy Award nominations, once experienced the bittersweet melody of Oscar near-misses. Nominated for his role in Richard Linklater’s groundbreaking drama Boyhood (2014), Hawke, 53, faced stiff competition in the Academy Awards race. The actor felt his chances would slip away after he beheld J.K. Simmons’ incredible performance in Whiplash.

Make note that Hawke was nominated for his first Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day; however, Jim Broadbent won the honor for his role in Iris.
As nobody enjoys losing, Hawke may have needed some guidance, which he eventually received from Denzel Washington, who gave him some encouraging words after this Oscar loss. The former has also received Oscar nominations for a couple of other films, including Before Sunset and Before Midnight.

Denzel Washington is easily one of the most admired and respected influences in the entertainment industry, with a presence that never ceases to catch the attention of the entire room he walks in. And yet, he was very well humbled when he came in the presence of the late legendary actor best known for playing James Bond: Sean Connery.

Interestingly enough, this happened at the Oscars, and the way Washington realized — even before the announcement of the results — that he had truly been defeated by the now-deceased actor on the biggest stage in Hollywood was through one simple act that was, perhaps, common for an actor as tremendously acclaimed as Connery: A 3-minute standing ovation!

Denzel Washington is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors who has graced the silver screen with many acclaimed performances to his credit. The actor has played heroic characters for most of his career in impressive films such as Mo’ Better Blues, Philadelphia, Courage Under Fire, and Glory winning an Oscar for the latter.
Denzel Washington as Easy Rawlins in Devil in a Blue Dress
His second Oscar win for Best Actor came with his antagonistic turn as Alonzo in Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day. Washington had never played a sleazy and morally complicated character like Alonzo before. However, he was vying to play one much before that film and one such antagonistic performance that he was envious of was of Don Cheadle in Devil in a Blue Dress.

Actor Denzel Washington has played several characters that he’s proud of. But not even Washington always gets the roles he’d prefer. When he did this film with Don Cheadle, he found himself a bit jealous that Cheadle snagged the much meatier part.

Nowadays, it’s no surprise to see Washington as a bad guy. Audiences first saw the actor break away from playing the hero all the time in Training Day. Portraying a full-on villain for once was exciting for Washington, who’d been clamoring to play a bad guy for years.
He first time entertained being a villain in the film Devil in a Blue Dress. The movie saw Washington playing the retired war veteran Easy Rawlins who investigates the disappearance of a missing woman.

Every actor has a few films that might not have performed as well as they wanted, including blockbuster star Denzel Washington. But one box-office disappointment was different from the others, as it may have been a direct result of the O.J. Simpson verdict.
How the O.J. Simpson trial might’ve affected ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ Denzel Washington | Miikka Skaffari/FilmMagic
Devil in a Blue Dress saw Oscar-winner Washington play Easy Rawlins, a private detective investigating a missing woman. The 1995 movie was based on a series of books that Washington and the film’s director Carl Franklin were interested in at the time. The fact that the film was about a black investigator in the 1940s added another layer to Franklin’s noir film for him to play with.
“It gives you another obstacle,” Franklin said in an interview with Slate. “Of course, obstacles are the key to drama.

There are few actors as versatile and intensely arresting as Lakeith Stanfield. Since appearing in Destin Daniel Cretton's Short Term 12 upon graduating from high school, Stanfield has gone on to work with premier talents, including Ava DuVernay, Jordan Peele and Donald Glover. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was one of the director’s more cerebral works, one that required some level of innovation when it came to the stuntwork. Nolan has been known to make films that routinely push the envelope in one manner or another, delivering a film that has a lot of heart with well-executed scenes, whether it be drama, action, tragedy, or comedy.
Robert Pattinson and John David Washington in Tenet
One of the most innovative scenes that were in Tenet was the reverse fight scene John David Washington participated. While it could have been the case that the director shot the scene the right way forward and then reversed it for the film, Nolan actually wanted the backward fight scene to be choreographed, which Washington revealed, was quite the challenge for the stunt workers, who had been in the film industry for quite some time.

Actor Denzel Washington and filmmaker Spike Lee have been known to work together on films like Malcolm X and Inside Man. Their frequent collaborations helped form a close bond between the two. But there’s another well-known actor who Lee feels he’s bonded with on a slightly similar level.

Washington and Lee have one of cinema’s most notable actor-director relationships. The pair first came together in the 1990 film Mo’ Better Blues. Lee immediately pictured Washington in the lead role of the film after seeing how women responded to the Oscar-winner.
“Before I wrote one word of Mo’ Better Blues, I knew I wanted Denzel Washington to play the lead,” Washington once told Entertainment Weekly. “In the fall of ’88, Denzel was starring on Broadway in Checkmates with Ruby Dee and Paul Winfield.

Actors in Tinseltown often take on roles that push them outside of their comfort zones. Few actors understand this better. Case in point: Denzel Washington, whose portrayal of American Muslim minister and civil rights leader in Malcolm X was filled with intense dedication—and, unexpectedly, tangible fear.
Before slipping into the character for Spike Lee’s Oscar-nominated masterpiece, Washington’s introduction to Malcolm X was somewhat limited, confined to his stage performance in When the Chickens Come Home to Roost. Learning more about Malcolm’s life’s complexities, the weight of the role grew apparent, leaving a lasting imprint on Washington’s psyche.
Denzel Washington in The Tragedy of Macbeth
The actor, 69, appreciated for his dynamic performances, found himself in uncharted waters—it wasn’t just the challenge of embodying such a complex real-life character but also stepping onto a stage where politics could translate into a real threat to one’s safety.

Did Anna Wintour add more tables to this year’s Met Gala? Because the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art felt especially crowded on Monday evening, May 6, teeming with Hollywood A-listers wearing a plethora of artful looks. And while not everyone leaned into the evening’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” for the most part the stars acquitted themselves well in looks that ranged from quiet elegance to over the top and outrageous.
Even with the nature-centric theme, the night surprisingly was highlighted by some stars in neutrals. Nicole Kidman offered a great backstory for her black and white Balenciaga gown, while Cardi B served up the night’s best drama in a Windowsen black gown that almost spanned the width of the museum steps. Flesh-toned gowns likewise were abundant, including Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta and Lizzo in a custom floral-inspired corset gown by Paris-based designer Victor Weinsanto.

Actor Denzel Washington starred as the titular character Malcolm X in Spike Lee’s critically acclaimed biopic. The movie was one of the most important features in Washington’s career, and it also might’ve been one of the most intimidating.
Washington and Lee didn’t have the typical worries filming Malcolm X like underperforming or bad reviews. Instead, doing the feature would have them scared for their lives.

Washington was already familiar with Malcolm X prior to shooting the 1992 picture. He was cast as the iconic figure in the play When the Chickens Come Home to Roost. Up until that point, although Washington knew of Malcolm, his knowledge was very limited.
“I didn’t have a view of Malcolm then,” Washington once told The New York Times.

King Kong ain’t got nothin’ on Denzel Washington but he did have something on Ethan Hawke on Oscar night 2002, when Hawke lost Best Supporting Actor for his remarkable performance in Training Day. But without his co-star, Hawke might have been plenty more devastated than he was allowed to be.
Appearing on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? (via Variety), Ethan Hawke remembered that Denzel Washington had some sage wisdom after he lost to Iris’ Jim Broadbent. According to Hawke, Washington told him, “‘It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better…You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status.’ That’s the way he thinks…The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple. It didn’t elevate who he was.” Washington would go on to win Best Actor later that night, which we’d...

Brad Pitt may have cemented his legacy of a legendary Hollywood actor back in the 1990s, but one of his outstanding roles could’ve never been his if it had been given to another actor as it’d been supposed to.
And the second candidate for the role wasn’t inferior at all — with all his experience with action films and thrillers, Denzel Washington could’ve also made a great fit.
While talking to Jamie Foxx on Grey Goose Vodka, the actor revealed that he had almost landed David Mills’ role in David Fincher’s crime thriller Seven that worthily holds the status of one of the best thrillers of the 1990s.
Washington went further with explaining the reasons for turning the script down — with the main one being that the story had seemed too demonic compared to what he would have chosen to do on the screen.
However weird it might sound,...
