Josh Brolin has had an interesting career over the years. His breakthrough role came with the 1985 adventure comedy film Goonies. In the 2000s, he gained prominence playing significant roles in acclaimed films such as No Country For Old Men and Milk. The 2010s was a great decade for Brolin as he tasted huge commercial success with the last two Avengers films and Deadpool 2.
Josh Brolin in 2008’s Milk
He played iconic comic book characters Thanos and Cable in the two films. However, he had already dipped into the comic book world with DC’s 2010 film Jonah Hex. The film is considered one of the worst superhero films ever made and Brolin is still taking the blame for the disastrous results of the film and continues to criticize its quality.

Josh Brolin looked back on some of his movies in a recent interview, and he didn’t hesitate to trash one of them.
The 56-year-old Dune: Part Two star described one of his previous releases as “a s-itty f-cking movie.” However, he shared something that he learned after previously dissing the movie that changed his perception of it.
He also opened up about how much he got paid for his starring role in 2007′s No Country for Old Men, which won big at the Oscars.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part Two is finally upon us after the writer and actor strikes delayed the release for a few months. The hype surrounding the film is massive and the review from our own Chris Bumbray says of the film, “In this day of assembly line blockbusters, it’s a miracle that director Denis Villeneuve has managed to get not one but two incredible, uncompromised epics like this through the studio system. It works as a tentpole blockbuster, but Dune Part Two is also filmmaking at the highest level.” Josh Brolin makes his return in the second part as well, and although the Academy Award-nominated actor has sealed himself in comic book movie history as one of the greatest villains with his role as Thanos, he still makes sure to talk trash where trash is due.

In the messy saga of making and failing Jonah Hex, Josh Brolin decides to forgive director Jimmy Hayward. The 56-year-old understands the tough times the director went through, especially with his battle against cancer. It’s quite unexpected for the actor to be so forgiving, given how badly the movie was received when it hit the screens.

This flick was Brolin’s first shot at a superhero role outside the Marvel universe, which was a pretty gutsy move. But with Hayward’s rocky ride at the helm, it was anything but smooth sailing.

Josh Brolin told GQ magazine in a new interview that “I won’t ever stop shitting on ‘Jonah Hex’ because it was a shitty fucking movie!” The 2010 comic book film, starring Brolin as the eponymous bounty hunter, is one of the genre’s most infamous flops, earning universal pans from critics and only grossing $11 million at the worldwide box office.
According to GQ, Brolin and his “Jonah Hex” director Jimmy Hayward “recently reconnected” and the filmmaker even “apologized for his part in the mess.” Brolin told Variety last year that part of the failure of “Jonah Hex” is that he rushed to hire a director and Hayward was just too inexperienced to execute Brolin’s vision for the comic book movie. Not that Brolin is interested anymore in taking out the film’s failure on Hayward, who revealed to Brolin that he has bone cancer and has been having several surgeries.

Josh Brolin says he ‘still owes’ Megan Fox and John Malkovich after making ‘bad choice’ on Jonah Hex
Josh Brolin has said he “still owes” Megan Fox after making a “bad choice” on Jonah Hex.
The actor recalled the messy production in a new interview, stating: “It was not successful creatively or monetarily. I mean, everybody knows how I feel about Jonah Hex.”
He explained that they rushed into hiring director Jimmy Hayward as the film was weeks away from bveing “canned”.
“I remember it didn’t feel right,” the Marvel star said of Hayward’s hiring in a new interview. “I loved that he was excited, but he just didn’t have the experience and he didn’t treat it like I would imagine somebody would want to treat it. He would be out partying instead.”
It was Brolin who brought in his co-stars, including Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender, John Malkovich and Michael Shannon, whose appearance was left on the cutting room floor.

Josh Brolin blames director Jimmy Hayward and studio interference for the failure of 'Jonah Hex'.The 52-year-old actor starred in the lead role of the 2010 comic book movie, which was a critical and commercial flop, and he thinks he "still owes" his co-stars an apology because of what the film turned out to be, which he blames on the filmmaker going "out partying" instead of devoting all his time to the project. He told Variety: "It was not successful creatively or monetarily. I mean, everybody knows how I feel about 'Jonah Hex'."But the biggest thing with 'Jonah Hex' is rushing into hiring somebody. I remember Jeff Robinov, who I’m still close with, who was running Warner Brothers at the time and he was like, look, you’ve got to get a director in the next two weeks, otherwise we’ve got to can this thing.

Another celebrity is bidding farewell to Twitter: beloved Canadian comedian Jim Carrey.
Carrey has long used the social media platform to share his artwork, which has typically been political satire critical of twice-impeached one-term president Donald Trump and assorted Republicans.
Given that history, it’s fitting that Carrey’s final tweet features an animated cartoon based on one of his paintings.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) continues to hold online critical and audience scores of 80% despite the film debuting to underwhelming box office numbers. Its $33 million domestic opening weekend ranks among the lowest comic book movies ever released, and is the worst since the $5.4 million opening of Jimmy Hayward’s 2010 failure Jonah Hex.
The film’s cumbersome title in particular, which is phonetically longer than an actual haiku, is partly to blame for its financial falter according to box office analyst Jeff Bock. “The first mistake is not focusing on” Margot Robbie’s returning antiheroine, he told Variety. “Not naming it Harley Quinn was a huge misfire.” That misfire was apparently so obvious that several theaters, including AMC, have now actually rebranded the movie as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey in their marketing materials, at the request of Warner Bros.

Cast one eye over the summer 2018 movie line-up and you’ll begin to notice a recurring pattern – and no, we’re not referring to the onslaught of superhero movies.
Instead, we kindly point you in the direction of Josh Brolin, who’s already beat the living daylights out of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for Avengers: Infinity War, while Deadpool 2 is expected to steer the venerable actor into R-rated territory later this week. Capping off his impressive hat-trick is Sicario: Day of the Soldado, in which he’ll reprise as FBI tough nut, Matt Graver.
That’s exciting in and of itself, but on the superhero front, it’s fair to say that Brolin’s back-to-back performances as Thanos and the one-armed Cable have been stealing headlines left, right and center. One of the less well-regarded comic book films of all time was one from only a few years ago - 2010's "Jonah Hex". A critical and commercial disaster, the $80 million budget project made just $10 million at the worldwide box-office and was the subject of scathing reviews.
Its stars Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich and Michael Fassbender managed to escape its stink without much damage, even so the film itself has become something of a poster child for how not to make a comic book movie. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor ("Crank") were originally hired to write and direct but dropped out before filming and were replaced by animation director Jimmy Hayward.
Rewrites, production problems and reshoots soon followed, and it was an experience that Brolin doesn't have many fond memories of. Speaking with The Nerdist and The Frame, Brolin discussed the mess and why he signed up in the first place:

It's certainly another lifetime ago for DC Entertainment, and the comic-book-movie world in general, but back in 2010, audiences and critics saw how ambitious projects could misfire badly with "Jonah Hex." "Crank" duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were hired to write and direct the movie in 2007, but a few a months before filming was slated to begin, they exited the project, with the unlikely choice of Jimmy Hayward ("Horton Hears A Who!") stepping in. Production was pushed back slightly, the script was reworked, but the film ran into even more problems, and at one point, "I Am Legend" director Francis Lawrence was brought in for reshoots. The result was a disaster, and Josh Brolin is candid about his not-so-fond memories of the production. Read More: The 20 Worst Summer Blockbusters Ever “Oh, ‘Jonah Hex,’ hated it. As stories of Fantastic Four's production woes spread, Ryan looks behind the scenes at the body horror superhero film we'll never see...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Fantastic Four.
Casting controversy. Months of rumours about a tortuous, troubled production. Director Josh Trank’s already infamous (now deleted) tweet. The unrelentingly negative reviews.
Having already lived through all that, sitting in a darkened multiplex and actually watching Fox’s Fantastic Four feels less like a normal viewing experience and more like archaeology.
Where is Trank, the director of the superb Chronicle, in among all this? What happened to the David Cronenberg fan who wanted to make a "science fiction tale of something happening to your body and it transforming out of your control" according to a Collider interview? The superhero movie that would fit into the "science fiction, or horror, or even drama sections" of the old Blockbusters video chain?...

Twin Peaks is coming back. Those are five words David Lynch fans having been waiting to hear for a long time. Seth MacFarlane's mock-Western movie A Million Ways to Die in the West has received dire reviews from disappointed critics ahead of its release today (May 30).
Not even Neil Patrick Harris's comically camp performance (or his pooing twice inside a hat) could salvage the film, which was summed up by Digital Spy as "a giant tumbleweed of a comedy drifting aimlessly through a laugh-free desert".
From Jonah Hex and Wild Wild West - we name eight other modern Westerns firing blanks below
1. Jonah Hex (2010)
This fantasy Western blockbuster derived from a DC Comics character fell flat on its (criminally disfigured) face upon its release, making a measly $10 million at the box office before sinking without trace. Despite Josh Brolin's best efforts as the lead and Michael Fassbender's brilliantly terrifying bowler-hat-wearing brute Burke, the movie was criticised for being edited within an inch of its short life, so...

Leviathan (12A)
(Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Véréna Paravel, 2012, Fra/UK/Us) 87 mins
An arthouse fishing-trawler documentary sounds like a practical joke, but this takes us to places we've never before – into the ocean depths and back out on to the decks with the catch. It's a series of dark, semi-abstract tableaux full of flapping fish, clanking machinery and tattooed fishermen doing wet, gory work. It's easy to forget this is real life you're watching.
Saving Mr Banks (PG)
(John Lee Hancock, 2013, Us) Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson. 125 mins
How Walt Disney came to make Mary Poppins was hardly a pressing movie mystery, and one suspects a spoonful of drama has been added, but the leads are eminently watchable.

Jimmy Hayward’s absurd animation Free Birds tells the tale of time travelling turkeys who set out to change the course of history. It’s just as outlandish and frivolous as you would hope for and expect – however it’s also equally as inane and vacuous as you may have feared it to be.
Reggie (Owen Wilson) is a disillusioned turkey, and he’s fed up of being a mere celebratory holiday meal, served up across America annually every Thanksgiving. However he is offered a lifeline when the defiant turkey Jake (Woody Harrelson) approaches him in the dead of the night, to tell him he has mission bestowed on him to capture Reggie and go back in time in the presidents secret time machine – to the first ever Thanksgiving in 1621, and somehow change the fate of their specie, and get turkey off the menu once and for good. Thanksgiving came a little early this year.
The animated “Free Birds” follow a couple of turkeys time traveling back to the very first Thanksgiving in order to stop serving Turkey as its holiday tradition.
The voice cast included Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler.
Latino-Review exclusively interviewed director Jimmy Hayward on the lovable children’s animated “Free Birds.” We discussed the animation production, voice acting and most importantly…..Thanksgiving.
“Free Birds” is currently in theaters.
Read the full transcript below or listen to the audio of the interview.
Latino-Review: Tell me, why do you hate Thanksgiving?
Jimmy Hayward: [Laughter] I don’t hate Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is an amazing holiday that deserves a family movie that everyone can get together and watch. This movie is not anti-Thanksgiving. It’s actually the opposite. Thanksgiving is a great time to be together with the people you love and that love you.

Movie Review: Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson are mischievous turkeys on a time travel mission in silly cartoon comedy Free Birds Owen Wilson, so much fun in the 2011 Woody Allen comedy Midnight in Paris, and the best thing about the recent job-loss comedy The Internship (reuniting with his Wedding Crashers co-star Vince Vaughn no less), generates laughs just with his aw-shucks personality and boyish facial expressions. When it comes to being funny, Wilson makes it look so easy. Wilson’s comic skills are put to the test in director Jimmy Hayward’s silly 3D cartoon comedy Free Birds, a kid-friendly tale about a pair of mismatched turkeys who travel back in time (really) to convince the pilgrims to take turkey...

Free Birds

USA, 2013
The new animated film Free Birds lives in a strange purgatory of concurrently trying way too hard and not trying nearly hard enough. Though its high-concept hook—turkeys go back in time to right before the first Thanksgiving to devise a way for the settlers to not dine on their feathered brethren at the inaugural feast—is admittedly not something animation studios have tried before, the execution is tired, manic, exhausting, and nonsensical. On one hand, it’s extremely easy to look at the film and poke holes in its logic, but then, this movie appears to be made by people who buy into the mentality that animated movies don’t need to work very hard, as long as they distract children for 90 minutes with bright colors and loud noises.

Let’s get the much-obliged pun out of the way: the new animated adventure-comedy Free Birds is not a turkey of a film. It does, however, follow in the tradition of children-aimed flicks like Hop, an Easter release, and Rise of the Guardians, which earned much of its box-office leading up to the Christmas holiday last year. Yes, Free Birds is yet another film dependent on a tie-in with a holiday for relevancy and a quick buck.
The film starts on a family-owned farm where the blue-faced, small-beaked Reggie lives with a dim-witted flock of turkeys. (Owen Wilson voices Reggie, with a southern twang to tweak his voice so that kids won’t be distracted by how similar he sounds to Lightning McQueen.) Reggie realizes that with the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching, the flock has started to eat tons of corn as they await entrance into ‘turkey paradise.’

"Free Birds" is more proof, as if 2013 needed it, that Hollywood has almost killed the animated goose that laid the golden egg.
No matter that in this case, the goose is a turkey. You didn't need to be told that. But a year that has produced the clever and heartfelt "The Croods" and the passably amusing "Despicable Me 2" has also had a healthy dose of sausage factory about it. "Epic," "Monsters University," "Planes," "Escape from Planet Earth," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" and "Turbo" -- all major pictures that hint at a talent pool spread absurdly thin and an industry with sneering contempt for its audience. ("Animate it, charge 3-D prices and their parents will grit their teeth and bear it!")

This weekend, Matthew McConaughey portrays a man diagnosed with HIV in "Dallas Buyers Club," Asa Butterfield battles an alien race in "Ender's Game," four good ol' boys throw a bachelor party in "Last Vegas," a man travels through time in "About Time," and two turkeys try to take their kind off the holiday menu in the animated "Free Birds."

Kingston, Ontario native Jimmy Hayward started as an animator during the heyday of computer-generated animation. He worked for Pixar, helping out with their feature-length debut Toy Story, as well as the studio’s four subsequent efforts. Hayward quickly moved up the ranks to become a sequence director for Robots, before getting the chance to direct a big-budget computer-generated film of his own, Horton Hears a Who!
Now, Hayward has just wrapped his second animated feature, Free Birds, which he directed, co-wrote and provided several of the voices for.
Free Birds tells the story of two turkeys: the intelligent and perceptive Reggie (voiced by Owen Wilson) and the burly and somewhat idiotic Jake (Woody Harrelson) who finds – what else – a time machine. With the machine’s capabilities, the duo decides to go back to Plymouth Colony in 1621, right before the first Thanksgiving, to prevent turkeys from becoming the holiday meal.

Horton Hears a Who! helmer Jimmy Hayward returns to animation this Friday for the animated comedy adventure Free Birds , featuring the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler. Reggie (Wilson) is a modern day turkey with a pretty sweet life. Presidentially pardoned, he does nothing with his days but eat pizza and watch tv. That all changes, though, when Jake (Harrelson) a no-nonsense (but none too bright) turkey arrives with a mission: He and Reggie are going to use a top-secret time machine to travel back to the very first Thanksgiving and change history so that turkey never becomes the main course. There, Reggie meets Jenny (Poehler), a 17th century turkey girl who has Reggie reconsidering exactly what he considers to be important in life....

Attention, children! Thanksgiving will soon be upon us, and unless the cook in your household provides a vegetarian option, that means turkey — a bird that has been raised to be axed, packaged, and raced to your grocer's freezer, ultimately to wing its way onto your family's table. There it will be presented on a platter, its legs splayed in a most ungainly fashion — let's hope it's been spared the further indignity of those ruffled paper anklets — before its flesh is torn to pieces and ingested by a gang of ravenous humans who will later fall asleep on the couch while watching football. It's the American way. We are, after all, a nation founded on bloodshed.

Title: Free Birds Director: Jimmy Hayward Starring: Voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler The American 3D computer-animated buddy comedy will be the perfect film-treat for Thanksgiving. ‘Free Birds’ was in fact originally titled ‘Turkeys’ and focuses on the dilemmatic fate that touches these animals every forth Thursday of November (in the United States, and on the second Monday of October in Canada). In 1621 the Pilgrim Fathers, who left England, arrived in the New World in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Winter was jeopardising the harvest in a wild land where seeds didn’t seem to take root. The continent was inhabited by natives who taught the pilgrims what products to cultivate [ Read More ]

On a quaint, family-owned farm, a giant turkey flock lives a quiet, complacent, corn-stuffed life. All everyone cares about is feeding time and grazing in the sun with the Farmer, who they swear will bring them to “Turkey Paradise.” Everyone, that is, except for Reggie (Owen Wilson), a whip-smart turkey whose bad-mouthing of the Farmer and disinterest in the mundane, overfed turkey existence makes him an outcast among his flock.
Reggie’s life is changed forever when an unexpected visit from the President of the United States lands him the esteemed honor of “Pardoned Turkey.” This means living the plush life at Camp David, complete with TV On Demand and cheese pizza. By being pardoned, Reggie has found his own Turkey Paradise - a place where he (and he alone) calls all the shots! That is until Reggie is plucked from his paradise by Jake (Woody Harrelson), the relentless founder...
