The Group A finals took place on “The Masked Singer” Wednesday, April 17 on “Queen Night.” After singing their hearts out for panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora, the bottom two acts were eliminated. First to go was Ugly Sweater, whose rendition of “I Want to Break Free” put him in last place. The soulful ball of yarn ripped off his mask and revealed himself as Grammy-nominated music legend Charlie Wilson.
“I had a great time here,” he told host Nick Cannon during his unmasked interview. “The fans are great!” Earlier in the episode Ugly Sweater hinted at giving Nick dating advice, and people wanted to know exactly what was said. “I can’t say it on TV, I don’t want to be bleeped,” he joked before adding, “12 kids? Come on, he know exactly what I told him to do.”

Lorde covers the Talking Heads’ cover of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River” for the latest single in A24’s all-star tribute to Stop Making Sense.
In addition to the Solar Power singer’s faithful rendition of the More Songs About Buildings and Food classic, Lorde also shared a lengthy letter about her first time hearing the Talking Heads and why that band is important to her.

In January, A24 Music shared Paramore’s cover of “Burning Down the House” as the lead single from their forthcoming Talking Heads tribute album. Now, another teaser single from the compilation has arrived: Lorde’s cover of “Take Me to the River.”
Originally written by Al Green, “Take Me to the River” was a bit of an unlikely Talking Heads cut, since David Byrne was apprehensive about recording a cover. Nonetheless, the band’s 1978 version made it onto their album More Songs About Buildings and Food, and has since become a beloved slice of their inventive sound.
Lorde has accompanied her cover with a lengthy note in which she reminisces about her first time hearing Talking Heads and the impact it had on her creatively. You can read it in full below.

The coaches of The Voice knew exactly the song they needed to perform to kick off the new season.
Just weeks ago, judges Chance the Rapper, John Legend, Reba McEntire, and Dan + Shay came together for a powerful, uplifting rendition of “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” backed by a massive choir. On Wednesday, The Voice shared a behind-the-scenes video of how it all happened.
“We went with ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’ because that’s what the world needs right now,” said Chance in the video.

Plenty of fans would love to meet Elvis Presley‘s ghost. Notably, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s specter is a character in Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis.” Cohn said the tune is more about his feelings about religion than his feelings about the “Heartbreak Hotel” singer. Regardless, it’s one of the most beloved tunes to mention Elvis.
Marc Cohn’s ‘Walking in Memphis’ made part of Elvis Presley’s Graceland very famous
“Walking in Memphis” is a tribute to the titular city, referencing famous musicians such as W. C. Handy and Al Green. A song like that wouldn’t be complete without a tip of the hat to the “Can’t Help Falling in Love” singer, a Memphis resident. One of the song’s verses focuses on Elvis. As is tradition, the coaches of The Voice have gathered for a special group performance ahead of the singing competition’s return next week.
This time around, the song of choice was Jackie DeShannon’s 1969 classic “Put a Little Love In Your Heart” (which Annie Lennox and Al Green also turned into a hit in 1988). Judges Chance the Rapper, John Legend, Reba McEntire, and Dan + Shay turned in a rousing rendition of the uplifting tune, getting an extra assist from a full-throated choir.

“This book is the story of my life as told through 23 songs that took me away, soaring, starting at ground level, living in a poor but happy home, never wanting for much more, enjoying what I had, even when times got tough, because I had my escape, my refuge, my music,” Rucker said in a statement.

House Republicans have voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, after botching their first attempt last week. The vote was 214-213.
Despite Republicans in the lower chamber finally delivering on their long-standing promise to impeach Mayorkas, there is little chance the Dhs secretary will actually be convicted by the Democrat-controlled Senate.
On Jan. 31, Republicans in the Homeland Security Committee approved articles of impeachment accusing Mayorkas of presiding “over a reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement, at the expense of the Constitution and the security of the United States.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas survived a House Republican effort to impeach him Tuesday.
A motion to impeach Mayorkas, something long sought by GOPers, failed 214-216, with four Republicans joining all Democrats against the motion.
Republicans leaders had sought to impeach Mayorkas over the crisis at the southern U.S. border. But Republicans including Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wi), Rep. Tom McClintock (R-ca) and Rep. Ken Buck (R-co) opposed the measure, arguing it would set a precedent for Democrats to try to remove Cabinet members in a Republican administration.
Mayorkas would have been the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached. In 1876, William Belknap, the Secretary of War, resigned before a House vote.

Even before Republicans took control of the House, Mayorkas was a target of GOP ire, as he was blamed for the increase in border crossings.

The Beatles were primarily a rock and pop band, but they still showed appreciation for soul music. Ringo Starr revealed he was a big fan of an Al Green song because of its incredible drumming. That tune appeared on an album that had an unusual impact on the American pop chart. On the other hand, the album was completely ignored by the public in the United Kingdom.
Ringo Starr loved the hi-hat in an Al Green song
During a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, a reporter asked Ringo if “What’d I Say” by Ray Charles was an influence on his drumming style. “No, I know the song really well,” he said. “I listened to the records, but I wasn’t, like, big on listening to the drums.” Ringo’s comments are surprising since Paul McCartney praised him for being able to recreate the feel of “What’d I Say.”

Chris Statpleton’s Higher sees the Kentucky-born country singer relying on familiar sonic and lyrical tropes: big guitars, ragged vocals, and lyrical themes of love, weariness, and tattered masculinity. But while Stapleton’s voice is as expressive as ever throughout his fifth studio album, the songwriting is safe and, at times, almost anonymous.
Higher opens with “What Am I Gonna Do,” which is loaded with jam-inspired guitar breaks and a loose, spontaneous-feeling groove. The track serves as a sort of template for many of the songs that follow—mostly midtempo country-rockers that are either expressions of tenderness and devotion to a lover or forlorn ruminations on a former one. While tracks like “South Dakota,” “The Bottom,” and “Crosswind” are all competently performed and produced, the music itself feels like a dime-store imitation of Eric Church or even the Allman Brothers Band.

In his career, Elvis Presley covered a number of popular songs. He did not typically write his own music and so relied on lyrics written by others to build his career. One song he covered to great, devastating effect was “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Elvis was a longtime fan of its original singer, Hank Williams, and described the song as the saddest he’d ever heard.
A Hank Williams song was the saddest tune Elvis had heard
Elvis’ deep, crooning voice was perfect for ballads, and he tackled a number of sad songs in his career. One of his favorite artists was Williams, and Elvis often sang his melancholy songs in casual settings with friends. He covered the song “Your Cheatin’ Heart” in 1965 and would later go on to sing “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

Let’s say you’re a band — a famous and well-regarded one — and you are deep into a tour that’s ambitious, theatrical, and almost triples the number of musicians you normally have onstage. Once upon a time, you played stark post-punk songs and Al Green covers at Cbgb. Now your shows are messing around with German expressionistic lighting, Kabuki tropes, and comically oversize suits. There are multimedia slides with random words and phrases (“Dollface,” “Drugs,” “Public Library”) projected on screens behind you. Your lead singer does an Astaire-and-Rogers...

The ultimate in low-budget film-making, the Ormonds specialised in bad-taste drive-in movies until a plane crash turned their attention to God. Now, with a major reevaluation, their time has come
In 1986, Jimmy McDonough, the acclaimed biographer of Neil Young, Tammy Wynette, Al Green and Russ Meyer, was sent bundle of movie memorabilia in the post. Amongst the photos and posters was a black-and-white still from an obscure 1963 movie, of “a very voluptuous dame leaning over a guy without a shirt on,” says McDonough, speaking from his home in Portland, Oregon. “The guy has a ‘Myrtle’ tattoo on his arm, and she’s lighting a cigarette.” The words “and after the cigarette, we’ll …” ran across the image. “It looked very seamy,” says McDonough. Yet the title of the film, Please Don’t Touch Me, suggested otherwise.

It’s 2003 and Jay-Z is planning a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his retirement from music.
But his bass player is unavailable. Adam Blackstone, a jack-of-all-trades who plays bass, drums, piano, organ, tuba and sousaphone — and is also a songwriter, producer, composer and everything else under the musical sun — is more than ready to step in.

Once upon a time, Shane Black's "The Nice Guys" might have become a hit. That time, however, was not May 20-22, 2016, when the film opened in a distant fourth place behind that weekend's box office champion, "The Angry Birds Movie." Black was coming off the billion-dollar success of "Iron Man 3" when he decided to write and direct his film, an original buddy crime comedy in the same vein as his cult classic directorial debut, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." Even then, he probably realized it was useless resisting the once unstoppable tide of superheroes and franchises, but darn it if he wasn't going to try (much like his film's offbeat heroes do their darnedest to curb the ever-turning wheel of systematic injustice).
Based on a screenplay Black co-wrote with Anthony Bagarozzi, "The Nice Guys" winds the clock back for a sordid comical yarn of crime and corruption in haze-ridden...

The prior decade had been one of stage-shaking triumphs, personal nightmares, various degrees of mortification, and now, a chance at possible redemption. But as musician and producer Martyn Ware soon learned, Turner’s past was never in the rearview mirror — and on that day, it was terrifyingly in her face.
The previous year, Turner had sung on an edgy, pulsating remake of the Temptations hit “Ball of Confusion,” and now Ware — who had co-helmed that track,...

I’ve been a fan of Tina Turner — the electrifying rock and soul goddess who died Wednesday at 83 after several lifetimes’ worth of legendary performances — for as long as I can remember. Probably since “Nutbush City Limits” hit the airwaves when I was a kid and those swaggering guitar riffs and Moog synthesizer sirens sunk into my bones.
I still can’t hear that song, or other early classics I discovered later, like the volcanic “River Deep — Mountain High,” or Turner’s cover of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hit “Proud Mary,” with its teasing slow start and Richter scale-busting explosion into hyper-speed frenzy, without wanting to drop everything and dance.
But I only ever saw her once in concert.
That was at London’s Wembley Arena in June 1987, a month after the U.K. paperback release of her autobiography, I, Tina, written with Kurt Loder. A friend in marketing at...

Tina Turner, the trailblazing rock star who set world records for ticket sales — and whose dramatic triumph over domestic abuse and the music industry itself made her a feminist icon — has died. She was 83.
Turner died Wednesday “after a long illness” in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, her reps announced. “With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” they said.
An electrifying live entertainer who sold 200 million albums and won nine Grammy Awards, Turner rose to fame in the 1960s as the centerpiece of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, a St. Louis blues band turned high-wire rock act.
During more than 60 years in the spotlight, she transformed notions about aging, opportunity and resilience, most notably with her landmark album Private Dancer, which launched her to solo superstardom (finally) at age 44.

If you glance at the soundtrack listing for “Love & Death,” you’ll basically find a greatest hits collection of bangers from the ’70s. Set from 1978-80, the HBO Max limited series features tunes from Bee Gees, Janis Joplin, Al Green, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond, to name a few, culled by music supervisor Robin Urdang. “It’s one of my favorite eras,” she tells Gold Derby (watch above). “A lot of the songs were scripted originally because David E. Kelley and Lesli Linka Glatter had in mind songs that they wanted to use. When I read the script and saw that in there, I was like, ‘Oh, my God! This is like my favorite music. I have to do the show.'”

Myron Elkins is one of those guys who seems to have stepped out of another time. At just 22, the former welder from the small town of Otsego, Michigan — closest city: Kalamazoo — drops names like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Al Green when recounting his musical mileposts. But he’s also fully aware that he’s a white man from the Midwest and that any claim he has to vintage soul music goes through one of his state’s most celebrated blue-collar singers.

Grammy-nominated R&b singer Bj The Chicago Kid has signed with hit producer Yeti Beats’ new label Reach The World Records in a joint venture with Sony’s RCA Records.
Bj The Chicago Kid and Beats — who has worked on hits like Doja Cat’s “Say So,” “Kiss Me More” and “Woman” — are working on a collaborative album that will be released this summer. Their first single, “Forgot Your Name,” drops Wednesday.
“This project is very different for me. It’s essentially the colliding of Yeti’s world with my world. It’s a unique approach to soul music and serves as our invite to both new and old fans to savor our unique flavor of classic soul,” Bj The Chicago Kid tells The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. “I know some folks will call it a concept album, but for me it’s an experiment and exploration of sound...

Ina Garten’s continuing her holiday menus with a selection of Barefoot Contessa dishes for Valentine’s Day. Ahead, what the cookbook author plans on making come Feb. 14, from the main course and sides to cocktails and a “romantic playlist.”
Ina Garten 2023 Valentine’s Day menu: Panko-Crusted Rack of Lamb is the main course
The Barefoot Contessa’s 2023 Valentine’s Day menu starts with a show-stopping main course. Garten’s pick? Panko-Crusted Rack of Lamb from her 2018 Cook Like a Pro cookbook.
It might sound intimidating to kitchen newbies and even seasoned home cooks, but Garten swore in a Feb. 6 Instagram post it’s “absolutely delicious and so easy to prepare on a weeknight.”
It takes 90 minutes to make (via Food Network). But, as Garten said, there’s not much to preparing it. Four steps and 10 ingredients are all it takes.

Barrett Strong, one of Motown‘s founding artists and most gifted songwriters who sang lead on the company’s breakthrough single “Money (That’s What I Want)” and later collaborated with Norman Whitfield on such classics as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “War” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” has died. He was 81.
His death was announced Sunday on social media by the Motown Museum, which did not immediately provide further details.
“Barrett was not only a great singer and piano player, but he, along with his writing partner Norman Whitfield, created an incredible body of work,” Motown founder Berry Gordy said in a statement.
Strong had yet to turn 20 when he agreed to let his friend Gordy, in the early days of building a recording empire in Detroit, manage him and release his music. Within a year, he was a part of history as the piano player and vocalist for “Money,...

2022 was, in my opinion, the year of Black women in music. Beyoncé, Lizzo, Tems and Nicki Minaj all topped the Billboard Hot 100, and the first three of those are among the top nominees at the current Grammy Awards. Sza’s long-awaited sophomore album “Sos” was one of the top stories of the year and broke streaming records. And other Black women like Sudan Archives, GloRilla and Latto were celebrated new artists. Amid all that, one Black woman achieved perhaps the hardest feat: Egot. Jennifer Hudson completed her Egot when she took home a Tony for producing the acclaimed Broadway show “A Strange Loop.” She isn’t the first Black woman to achieve Egot status — that would be Whoopi Goldberg — but she is the first Black female musician to do so and the second Black musician overall, after John Legend. Much has been said about Hudson’s first Egot award — her...

Near, far, wherever you are, you won’t be named one of the greatest singers ever, Celine Dion–at least according to Rolling Stone. The Grammy-winning singer, who led Titanic’s ballad “My Heart Will Go On” to an Oscar, was notably omitted from the publication’s list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
Obviously any list is subjective–and Rolling Stone did preface their list with the following: “Before you start scrolling (and commenting), keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List. Talent is impressive; genius is transcendent…In all cases, what mattered most to us was originality, influence, the depth of an artist’s catalog, and the breadth of their musical legacy. A voice can be gorgeous…rugged…understated…slippery and sumptuous…or bracing…But in the end, the singers behind it are here for one reason: They can remake...

Update: The House will adjourn until noon Et/9 a.m. Pt on Thursday, giving Kevin McCarthy more time to try to sway holdouts to support his bid for speaker — or work out some other sort of deal.
The scene on the House floor was raucous as Democrats objected to the motion to adjourn, forcing a vote on the issue. They sought to stay in session for the evening, something that would have likely meant another embarrassing roll call vote and defeat for McCarthy. And Democrats nearly got their wish. With the tally neck and neck, Democrats at one point rushed one member through the aisles to cast her ballot before the House clerk called a close to the process. But some Republicans switched their votes to adjourn, eventually giving them a 216-214 majority in favor of adjournment.

Unlike other former leaders of the Free World, President Barack Obama is known for keeping his finger on the pulse of pop culture. In addition to sharing his Favorite Books of 2022, Obama is ready to release a list of his Favorite Movies of 2022, including Top Gun: Maverick, The Woman King, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Emily the Criminal, and more. Obama posted the complete list to Instagram on Friday, cementing his reputation as a man of taste.
Earlier this year, Obama shared a Spotify playlist link presenting his favorite Summer Jams of 2022. Included on the list were Beyoncé, Prince, Al Green, Miles Davis, Fatboy Slim, Joe Cocker, Burna Boy, Kendrick Lamar, Tems, and one of my favorites, the British indie rock band Wet Leg. The mix will bring heat to any pool party full of people looking to get their drink on while playing Beach Blanket Bingo.

On the red carpet outside the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles gala Saturday night, the organization’s president and CEO Paul Viviano explained how, if this were a typical event, the musical headliner would deliver a “low-ley” performance of two or three songs. But this year’s installment, held at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, was anything but routine.
That was all thanks to Justin Timberlake as the 41-year-old crooner not only agreed to show up, but also to put on a show — a 40-minute mini-concert of 10 songsm including his tracks “Suit & Tie,” “Señorita” and “Can’t Fight the Feeling,” mixed in with classic hits and soul classics from artists like Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Bill Withers and Sam Cooke.
“We’re privileged to have him,” Viviano gushed of Timberlake’s showing at the event, Chla’s first in-person fundraiser in three years.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Episode 5.
Should have seen that coming. Two nice things in a row just happened to June and Luke (hot marriage sex plus romantic Al Green slow dance), so by the laws of The Handmaid’s Tale, one of them’s now going to have to lose a limb. No good deed goes unpunished on this show, which keeps its finger hovering over the ‘electrocute’ button anytime a character even comes close to having a good time.
That played out in the sad story of Jaden (Owen Painter), a young Guardian raised by Gilead after being stolen like Hannah from ‘unfit’ parents. Somehow, Jaden had retained a simple, instinctive goodness despite the regime’s brutality, and was working with Mayday to try to help. His political philosophy? “People should just be able to talk to each other, see their families, do whatever they want.

It’s nearly time for “Queen Sugar” fans to “take flight” one last time, as we prepare to say goodbye to the Bordelon family.
OWN has released the official trailer for the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, created by Ava DuVernay and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“If we do not honor our past, we dishonor our future. Listen,” says Rutina Wesley’s Nova, the eldest Bordelon sibling, as the clip begins, previewing the tense and tender scenes that will play out over the next 13 episodes.
The first look, set to Al Green’s “Love and Happiness,” tees up the latest developments in the lives of Bordelons: Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) have welcomed their second child, a daughter, and they continue to fight for their family’s future by exorcising their personal demons — namely, his deal with the...

Only a couple of days into June and the movies are bombarding us with some nifty vacation options. Let’s see, we just took a wild funny trek to Fire Island in the northeastern part of the country, so where “to” now virtually? Well, the last one was a scripted twist on the “rom-com”, so how about a non-fiction flick? Yes, a documentary feature (now don’t you whine and cry “Homework?!”), but it’s also a concert overview. In fact, it’s a toe-tapping delight, much in the vein of last year’s Oscar-winner (and crowd-pleaser) Summer Of Soul. We’re still in the good ole’ US of A, but a lot further south and a bit west. And though this on-the-bayou burg is known usually for one type of tune, this film looks at an annual event that’s a celebration of all things musical from all around the world.

His debut 2017 single was the brazenly enormous Bowie/Queen-style ballad “Sign of the Times.” An artist in his position could’ve come off as insecure or overreaching, but Styles has relaxed with winning ease into his role as a gender-fluid, genre-fluid megastar, a new-look rock & roll gentleman who can flip from guitar raunch to soul to soft rock and convincingly pull off a come-on like “I know that...

This review of “Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story” was first published March 13, 2022, after premiering at the SXSW Film Festival.
Anybody who’s been to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival could tell you that the hardest part of making a movie about the annual event, which takes up two weekends in late April and early May in the Crescent City, would have to be fitting it all in.
Jazz Fest, after all, showcases 7,000 musicians on 14 stages over eight days in a city whose homegrown music is a gumbo made up of every style and sound that came up through the Gulf of Mexico, down the Mississippi River or through the delta to the east and the swamps to the west of the city. The festival is gloriously overwhelming, an embarrassment of riches that forces you to pick and choose and be open to surprises any time the wind changes...
