Innovative costume designer and art director Eiko Ishioka has died aged 73. Ms Ishioka will surely be best remembered for her Oscar winning costumes in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), which included Vlad III the Impaler’s (Gary Oldman) eye-popping suit of armour that resembled the structural configuration of human muscles and provocative Gothic dresses worn by The Brides.
Tokyo born Eiko Ishioka also designed costumes for 2011 fantasy drama Immortals. Regular collaborator, director Tarsem Singh, known for his judicious use of extravagant headwear, employed Ms Ishioka to create an array of imaginative ensembles based on Greek mythology. A modest résumé of ten feature films takes nothing away from Eiko Ishioka’s influence on the industry – her intricate craftsmanship was astonishing – or the creative arts as a whole.

The man who dressed Raging Bull, Goodfellas and the Color of Money, costume designer Richard Bruno, has died aged 87.
Bruno’s career spanned thirty years and he worked on fifty feature films. His early work as a wardrobe supervisor provided a prestige backdrop to his later collaborations with director Martin Scorsese, which would eventually lead to a BAFTA win for Goodfellas (1990); movies such as Westworld (1973), Chinatown (1975) and as a wardrobe consultant for Robert De Niro on The Untouchables (1987). Richard Bruno also provided De Niro’s memorable look, the red clip-on bow tie and geometric print jacket as Rupert Pupkin in The King of Comedy (1983).

After that surprising snub by the Academy (not even a nomination) and BAFTA, Black Swan costume designer Amy Westcott has finally been rewarded, with a Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) Award for Excellence in Contemporary Film.
This was a tough category, too. Jeffrey Kurland has hardly been mentioned, apart from by the public, regarding his almost entirely bespoke costumes for Inception. Have the Guild responded to the recent, very public controversy between Westcott and Black Swan contributors Kate and Laura Mulleavy, i.e. Rodarte? Perhaps, yes, and we would not begin to suggest this is a bad thing either. Moreover the effectiveness of the Cdg lies in their broad distinction between genres, e.g. period and contemporary, allowing them to reward grand, noticeable costumes and subtler, more narrative lead design.

A real legend of the industry, Greek born costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge, has died aged 88 years old.
Designing for both stage and screen since 1950s, Aldredge was perhaps best known for her work during seventies era Hollywood on films such as Three Days Of The Condor (1975), Network (1976) and Eyes of Laura Mars (1978).
She collaborated with Ralph Lauren for The Great Gatsby in 1974, though ostensibly Lauren just provided shirts and some suiting, in which she sparked a high street fashion revival for the delicate, waistless shifts worn by Mia Farrow’s character Daisy. The costumes were made in less than two weeks – an astonishing achievement.
Aldredge also created some memorable ensembles for Ghostbusters (1984) and Cher vehicle Moonstruck (1987). Seemingly passionate to reflect the era in which she worked, many of her costumes, Sigourney Weaver’s batwing lamé dress and oversized cape coat in Ghostbusters and Faye Dunaway’s double split skirt in Laura Mars,...

So, the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) has served up their nominations for this year. Apart from falling short on numbers in a couple of categories, the line-up is predictably safe.
Excellence in Contemporary Film
Black Swan – Amy Westcott
Burlesque – Michael Kaplan
Inception – Jeffrey Kurland
The Social Network – Jacqueline West
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps – Ellen Mirojnick
There has been recent hoopla in the press regarding Rodarte’s overall involvement with the costume design for Black Swan, though the Costume Designers Guild will be unlikely to run scared. Shouldn’t The Social Network strictly be in the Period category, however? Jacqueline West went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the film was historically accurate, something often harder to achieve when the setting is recent.
Excellence in Period Film
The Fighter – Mark Bridges
The King’s Speech – Jenny Beavan
True Grit – Mary Zophres
It would be wonderful to see Mark Bridges’ largely (and...
