The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artistes who will be inducted in 2024. According to ‘Variety’, the diverse list includes R&b/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton, pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, as well as 1970s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner, and Ozzy Osbourne, alongside 1990s icons such as the Dave Matthews Band and Mary J. Blige.
Jimmy Buffett’s inclusion among the inductees comes as a surprise. His entry is unexpected not only because the late singer/songwriter was not on the ballot this year but also because he had never been nominated before.
‘Variety’ reports that the Rock Hall’s committee, seemingly in a sentimental mood after Buffett’s passing seven months ago, chose to honour him via a separate, non-voted category for “musical excellence”.

Jimmy Page needed time to find the desire to join a band after Led Zeppelin folded. Drummer John Bonham’s tragic death in 1980 brought a sudden end to the band Page formed in 1968 and guided to worldwide success in the 1970s. The Firm, featuring Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, was that band. He was the unquestioned boss in Led Zeppelin, but Rodgers told Page to take a back seat on The Firm song “Radioactive.”
(l-r) Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers | Clayton Call/Redferns Paul Rodgers got ‘ballsy’ and told Jimmy Page to stand aside as he played the solo on 1 The Firm song
Page’s quiet career in right after Led Zeppelin folded — composing the Death Wish II soundtrack and piecing together the posthumous Led Zeppelin album Coda — received a boost in 1983. The guitarist was one of many classic rock icons who joined the Arms (Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis) benefit concerts.

The Rolling Stones are one of the greatest classic rock bands by almost any measure. They won over millions of fans, but some fellow musicians hate The Rolling Stones. Their unbelievable career span, run of great albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and multiple No. 1 hits don’t mean much to other artists who couldn’t stand Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and crew.

The musicians who hated The Rolling Stones clearly didn’t hide their disdain for the band’s music. Neither did Jagger and Richards. After more than 60 years as a group, the two lifelong members hated some of the music they made together.
Both Richards and Jagger hate Their Satanic Majesties Request.

In 2013, I interviewed the Rolling Stones for this magazine as the band prepared for the next leg of their 50th anniversary tour. I’d talked to Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ron Wood before, but never Charlie Watts. I was excited by the prospect: For more years than I could count, I had wanted to be able to sit in a room and talk with him about jazz. I got to do that, but the section I wrote about him didn’t make the final story.

Charles Robert “Charlie” Watts, the Rolling Stones’ drummer and the band’s irreplaceable heartbeat, has died at age 80.
Watts’ publicist confirmed his death in a statement. “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts,” it read. “He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier [Tuesday] surrounded by his family.” The statement referred to Watts as “one of the greatest drummers of his generation” and closed by requesting that “the privacy of his family, band members, and close friends is respected at this difficult time.

When Ginger Baker was a teenager, his life was transformed in two lasting ways. While at a party around age 15, he was encouraged to sit down at a drum kit and play; classmates had noticed he would drum on his desktop and thought he’d be good at it. Before long he had given up dreams of being a pilot or a championship bicyclist for a musician’s life. Around the same time, he belatedly read a letter his late father, a bricklayer who had died in World War II,...

Ginger Baker, the volatile musician widely acknowledged as one of the greatest drummers in rock ‘n roll history, died today at age 80. His death was confirmed by his family via Twitter.
“We are very sad to say that Ginger has passed away peacefully in hospital this morning,” said the tweet. Daughter Nettie confirmed that Baker died in Britain but gave no further details. The family had said late last month that he was critically ill in the hospital.
Baker was an integral part of the power trio Cream, joining with guitarist Eric Clapton and bassist Jack Bruce to forge a propulsive sound that became a standard for blues rock. Baker was a key component, wielding his jazz background into the mix to drive an intricate style.
As powerful as his drumming was, the red-haired and edgy Baker also forged a fearsome reputation off-stage, involved in numerous scraps with musicians and media.

The Guardians of the Galaxy films are famous for incorporating classic tracks into the films' scenes and narrative -- nothing beats watching Kurt Russell talk his way through 'Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)' by Looking Glass. James Gunn is not the only director who very carefully considers every track, writes to the music he has picked, and seamlessly weaves it into his films. Edgar Wright has been obsessed with his musical choices since his TV show Spaced, with the following soundtracks for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World all including some pretty deep cuts that make for fine listening, long after you've seen the film.
Baby Driver is Wright's next film, and the latest trailer not only included 'Tequila' by The Champs, but was also titled "Official TeKillYah Trailer" to put further emphasis on the music. The trailer also sports...

When it comes to British blues, all roads lead to John Mayall. As a multi-instrumentalist, he delivered a shot of pure Chicago-style directly to the heart of the nation’s capital, jumpstarting a movement that re-defined the genre. As a bandleader, he mentored some of the biggest names in rock history.
Having honed his craft backing Delta greats Johnny Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williams on their first English tours in the early 1960s, Mayall added his daring artistic spirit and amped-up wattage to his own band, the Bluesbreakers. The seminal group became a cornerstone of the burgeoning blues scene in London,...

Bassist Jack Bruce has passed on at the age of 71 of liver disease. No one lives forever, but he will always be best known for his power trio Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. I was fortunate enough to catch their reunion tour in 2005 at Madison Square Garden. I was blown away by Jack's bass playing and his strong vocals throughout. And this was a man who had survived liver cancer and a liver transplant just a few short years earlier. Certainly his legendary power trio was a tough act to follow, but Bruce has many albums in his discography both before and after his classic rock trio; not only with British blues bands such as Alexis Korner’s Blues Inc., the Graham Bond Organisation, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and Manfred Mann, but a robust solo career, too. And in 1994, in an effort to recreate the energy and excitement of Cream,...

British musician Jack Bruce, best known as the bass player and vocalist of the power blues trio Cream, died Saturday at his home, his family and publicist said. He was 71. Bruce was one of the top musicians of the late 1960s, when Cream played its unique psychedelic blues tunes to packed houses in England and the U.S. The band - widely cited as the original supergroup - were known for hits such as "I Feel Free" and "Sunshine of Your Love," which featured Eric Clapton's innovative guitar riffs, and Bruce's vocals and roaring bass, backed by Ginger Baker's explosive drumming.

Christopher Andersen's biography of Mick Jagger is little more than an anthology of juicy gossip
Photographer Cecil Beaton knew where Mick Jagger's power resided. "The mouth is almost too large," he wrote. "He is beautiful and ugly, feminine and masculine. A rare phenomenon." In that mouth, granted pop-art immortality by John Pasche's Rolling Stones logo, you see Jagger's voracious, infectious appetite. Although he briefly delighted the left with a spasm of '68 radicalism during which he declared, unbelievably, that "there should be no such thing as private property", he had no real affinity for the utopian side of the 60s. He embodied instead the pushy, hard-charging aspect that said that the time for waiting was over and the time for taking was here. His raw desire had a certain brutal purity, and this Pe teacher's son combined it with a muscular discipline that ensured the band's improbable longevity. As...

The Rolling Stones returned to where it all began as they posed outside a recreation of the venue of their first ever gig, half a century on.
Rock veterans Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood gathered at a mock-up of the old Marquee club venue to mark the 50th anniversary of their debut.
Rolling Stones recapture the Marquee magic, 50 years on
They were captured by renowned photographer Rankin, the first time the members had been pictured together for four years, since the premiere of their Shine A Light movie.
The group played their first show at the club in London's Oxford Street on July 12, 1962, under the name The Rollin' Stones, hastily chosen from a song by their blues hero Muddy Waters.
The group landed the gig when the venue's regular band Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated were booked for a BBC radio show and Marquee owner Harold...

Scottish singer with a second career on TV
Tam White, who has died after a heart attack aged 67, was once described by the musician Alexis Korner as "the greatest undiscovered blues talent of our time". White was a highly accomplished blues and jazz singer whose career stretched from the beat group scene of the 1960s to recent appearances at the Edinburgh jazz and blues festival.
The son of a lorry driver and a cleaner, he grew up in Edinburgh, living above the White Hart Inn, in Grassmarket, where Robert Burns had stayed in 1791. (White would later set Burns's poem The Slave's Lament to music for a track on his 2004 album Hold On.) The Whites were a musical family: Tam's grandfather was a bandmaster and his mother, Marion, was a fine singer. At Darroch secondary school in Edinburgh, White sang in productions of The Beggar's Opera and The Mikado, and he...
