“Cruel Summer” has officially taken over the Fall.
More than four years after Taylor Swift’s Lover track was released in August 2019, the song has finally topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, the publication announced on Monday, marking yet another victory for Swift that likely would have been unexpected until a few months ago. The song finished last week with 18.6 million streams and over 41,000 sales, the latter figure representing a 1,400 percent increase from the week prior.
“Cruel Summer” marks Swift’s 10th Billboard Number One single and the first song off Lover to top the chart.

Look! Up there on the stage! Is it a bird? Is it an aging Bichon Frise? Is it a soccer mom off her face on pesto? Sort of—it’s comedian Chris Fleming, the manic brain behind the hit YouTube series Gayle and Drew Carey of the millennial set.

Britney Spears knows how to “Work, B—h” – and she doesn’t need anything besides a long hallway and a willing cameraperson to make it happen. But while we’ve come to expect certain things from her at-home fashion shows – flowing blonde locks, dramatic posing, an unexpected soundtrack – Friday’s latest entry in the series had one major surprise: A throwback to the music video that made her a household name.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for the entire run of “Girls,” through the series finale.]
Lena Dunham had a fun suggestion for fans of her iconic HBO comedy “Girls,” which just wrapped its final season on Sunday.
“Max Brockman is one of our writers, and he’s amazing at everything, but he’s sort of like the ‘Girls’ historian. He’s the one that went in and basically looked at each character and told us what the final thing they said in the series was and it was all very poetic,” she said to IndieWire during a recent discussion of the final season. “I encourage you to go home and play the game. You go through most of our main characters, and it’s pretty amazing what the final thing that comes out of their mouth is.”

Days after going for a run in La, Justin Bieber is at it again with another shirtless jog. On Saturday, the "Purpose" singer showed off his impressive physique as he hiked in Runyon Canyon. Justin is currently getting ready to hit the road again for his Purpose tour, and his first stop will be in Iceland. Earlier in the week, he appeared on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge and delivered an acoustic performance of his recent hits, including "Cold Water." It feels like we've heard a lot about Justin Bieber lately, but now it's time to hear from him in the way he seems to best express himself: Song. The 22-year-old singer performed live in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, reminding fans and critics alive how much sheer talent he possesses. The Biebs sang a live, acoustic cover of "Cold Water," his song with Major Lazer, as well as a variety of covers including Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" and 2Pac's "Thugzz Mansion." We were most impressed with Justin's set, but it seems he didn't feel it was his best. "I don't usually get nervous but tonight I was thrown off and I was," he tweeted. "Sorry about...

44 years ago today, “The Brady Bunch” welcomed a very exciting guest star. The Monkees’ heartthrob Davy Jones appeared on the December 10, 1971 episode of the classic sitcom. Jones played himself in the episode, which had Marcia Brady (president of the Fillmore Junior High Davy Jones Fan Club) trying to get Jones to sing at her prom. He grants her wish, and then some — he’s her prom date too! Other notable December 10 happenings in pop culture history: • 1966: The Beach Boys’ single “Good Vibrations” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. • 1967: Otis Redding died in a plane crash. • 1969: “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” opened in theaters. • 1976: Queen’s 7” single “Somebody to Love” was released in the U.S. On the same day, their album “A Day at the Races” was released in the U.K. • 1992: The musical “My Favorite Year” opened on Broadway. • 1998: The Amnesty International...

We told you all the ways Courtney Love is steadily making a comeback, which should fill you with endorphins. I'm not sure her appearance in "Montage of Heck" will thrill fans, but she's such a dynamic, eye-rolling force whose insight is still provocative. We can always use more Courtney. Plus, "Live Through This" is better than "Nevermind." Sorry. As for other comebacks we need right now, here are ones I'm constantly thinking about: Missy Elliott (of course; she's on a new Ciara track and sounds fantastic, by the way), Dana Carvey, Cheri Oteri, Alanis Morissette, Miranda Richardson, Tracy Chapman (She sounded fantastic performing "Stand By Me" on Letterman), Lesley Ann Warren, and Winona Ryder. Fingers crossed for all of you. Here's what else is going on today: "Hot Pursuit" is not the awesome comedy you want it to be. Oh, Reese. Oh, Sofia. What happened to all of the good jokes?...

Women rarely make it into the main rock categories at the Grammys, but this year, the two solo female and women-led groups that managed to squeeze in to two categories took home the honors. St. Vincent's self-titled album scored the Best Alternative Album win, and Hayley Williams-led Paramore earned Best Rock Song for "Ain't It Fun." "St. Vincent" was up against Alt-j, Arcade Fire, Cage the Elephant and Jack White; and Paramore was up against songs from Ryan Adams, The Black Keys, Beck and White. Two of England’s hottest male singers turned to covers this week: Sam Smith tackled Tracy Chapman’s classic, “Fast Car,” for BBC Live Lounge, while Ed Sheehan covered his buddies in Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars.” While Smith’s clear, gorgeous tenor would seem perfect for Chapman’s heartbreaking song of escape, it ends up being a not great fit. That’s not because his voice doesn’t sound strong, it’s because he doesn’t imbue the song with any of the heartbreaking emotion from the original. Sheeran succeeds far better covering "Chasing Cars." His tackling the song is nothing new. He's been doing it for at least a few years since he's such good pals with the dudes in Snow Patrol and has written with them and toured with them, but he unveiled a new solo acoustic version for MTV that went online today that's lovely and spare and very romantic.

Sam, if you're gonna take on Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car," you're going to have to give us something we can feel. Even butchered karaoke versions have a tinge of wild despair; it is practically required by law. “Ghost Stories” is Chris Martin’s equivalent of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours,” Bob Dylan’s “Blood On the Tracks,” or Bruce Springsteen’s “Tunnel Of Love.” No, I’m not suggesting that Coldplay’s latest, out this week, will have a similar endurance or that it packs a gut punch like these three seminal albums, only that it is the latest in the pantheon of albums chronicling the breakup of a long term marriage or relationship where the artist lays himself/herself bare. “I just got broken, broken into two,” Martin sings on the lilting “Magic.” And yet, as he goes on to sing on one of the album’s strongest tracks, the Edm-influenced, soaring “A Sky Full of Stars,” featuring Avicii, “I don’t care if you tear me apart,” because his ex-love is so radiant that being in her orbit is enough to warrant any pain. Even “Magic” ends on an up note.

Alice Walker knew that she had to do well to make her mother proud.
Imagine how proud she would have been when her daughter became the first black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, for "The Color Purple."
Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar draws from multiple interviews with Walker, historic documents, news footage and clips to create "Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth," airing on PBS' "American Masters" Friday, Feb. 7 (check local listings).
Parmar met the activist and author of more than 30 books in 1991 and began interviewing her eight years later.
"I did an interview outside the shack in which her mother grew up out in the country," Parmar tells Zap2it.
Walker's voice-over explains how her mother made even this ramshackle shack a home. She bought scraps of wallpaper for the kids' room, but when she could get no more, she ironed brown paper bags to line the walls in other rooms.

It was another great year at the Sundance Film Festival! There were so many fantastic movies shown, and I still have a couple more to go. I'm really happy to say that Miles Teller and J.K. Simmon's film Whiplash took home the top two prizes, winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. This was my number one favorite film from the festival, and it seems like everyone else at the festival loved it too, so it doesn't surprise me that it won.
Here's the full list of winners:

The Grammys are on Sunday, so let’s investigate its most bizarre category: Best New Artist. Both Christopher Cross and Esparanza Spalding have one. That’s real. And that’s why we’re counting down the ten best winners and the five worst losers. Because maybe we’ll learn something! That’s what I’ll go with.
10. Rickie Lee Jones
Rickie Lee may not have had as gigantic a Billboard career following her Best New Artist win as some of the other stars here, but her debut album is such an assured, unpretentiously poetic, rich listening experience. “Chuck E.’s in Love” and “Young Blood” are whimsical and catchy while “Night Train” and “The Last Chance Texaco” are crackling, despairing portraits. She was also so rad, and that made her bohemian folksiness so much fresher than you’d expect.

After winning Best Musical at the Tony Awards this summer, Cyndi Lauper's "Kinky Boots" now competes at the Grammys for Best Musical Theater Album. Can it triumph again? Lauper made her Grammy Awards debut in 1984, winning Best New Artist against Corey Hart, Sheila E., Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and The Judds. She is one of only of eight artists to be nominated for the top four categories in the General Field and win Best New Artist. The others are Bobbi Gentry (1967), Christopher Cross (1980), Tracy Chapman (1988), Mariah Carey (1990), Paula Cole (1997), Amy Winehouse (2007), and Fun. (2012). Lauper has received 14 nominations in various genres fields ranging from Pop to Rock to Dance to Blues to Arranging. All but one of those bids resulted in losses, but this year she may add Musical Show to her diverse list of Grammy field nods. At the Grammys, unlike the Tonys, the Best Musical Theater Album award includes both new Music.

“Intolerance”
“Intolerance” would be a massive, amazing undertaking in 2013. Can you even put in perspective what it was like 100 years ago? Arguably one of the most important and influential silent films ever made, “Intolerance” runs almost three hours and covers centuries of storytelling. It’s a fascinating film both in the history of cinema and the way it addressed cultural concerns of the time. Cohen Media Group continues to expertly restore and highlight great films. They’re quickly rising the ranks of the most important Blu-ray studios working today.

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has heard our pleas for spankin’ new theme weeks on American Idol, but when the Top 10 take the stage Wednesday night (8/7 c, on Fox) the results could be beautiful or they could be disastrous.
You see, “Music of the American Idols” is a two-pronged beast, encompassing the songs previous Idol winners covered during their respective seasons, and also the songs that these champs have released in their post-show careers.
The key for the Season 12 Top 10 will be choosing songs that fit their voices — but not trying to recreate iconic Idol moments that they’ll never be able to match.
