Buenos Aires, March 3 (Ians) Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said that he is looking forward to seeing a fit and happy Lionel Messi in the Albiceleste's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil next month.
Messi began the current season slowly for Barcelona after a failed attempt to force a transfer last August. However, the 33-year-old has recaptured his best form in recent weeks and he now has 24 goals and nine assists in 32 matches across all competitions in 2020-21, Xinhua news agency reported.
"Messi is fine and when he is with us he is even better," Scaloni told reporters on Tuesday.
"Let's hope he continues in this way."
While Messi appears to be in peak physical condition, the same cannot be said of several of his Albiceleste teammates.
Among those in danger of missing the upcoming qualifiers are Tottenham playmaker Giovani Lo Celso, Stuttgart forward Nicolas Gonzalez, and Sevilla pair Lucas Ocampos and Marcos Acuna.

With less than a week to go before the 17/18 season starts, it’s hard to see the Premier League trophy ending up anywhere other than back up north. Though as a born and bred southerner, anything past the Watford Gap service station I classify as north. Which gives me a good chance of being right, as half of the clubs in the Premier League reside up north. So perhaps I should be more specific. In my opinion; the title will be heading to Manchester, now whether that be the blue half or the red, that’s harder to say.
With Manchester City having already spent over £200 million and Manchester United a close second, spending around £160 million, they lead the way in the transfer market this summer. They’ve sent out a clear message to the other title contenders, with only the Champions, Chelsea trying to keep up. Of course the...

Money in the world of football has become a big talking point within the game. Be it transfer fees, ticket prices, imaging and TV rights, or even the odd FIFA related bribing scandal, the financial element of the game will now always be questioned. With figures nearly exceeding £100,000,000 for a single player it’s beginning to feel that clubs can demand stupid money for any player within their squad. You only have to look at players like Dwight Gayle, Jake Livermore, and Robert Snodgrass who are being bought for £10 million plus. I mean, Crystal Palace bought Jeffery Schlupp for £12 million! Am I missing something here? It’s like money doesn’t have any value within the game anymore.
Of course, there are some transfers that warrant clubs splashing out large amounts of money to get their man. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez, and Neymar to name a few.

We all know megastar Akshay Kumar is the undisputed ruler of hearts when it comes to his action and comedy films but how many of us know that he’s a true football fan? But that’s not the only reason why he is sporting a short crop with an even sharper parting. In his next release ‘Housefull 3’, the Bollywood superstar plays a footballer. He thought it would be suitable to wear his hair like world-famous footballers Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Aguero.
When asked about his latest hairdo, Akshay said: “My love for sports is not a hidden secret, be it cricket, karate or football. Usually the rains play spoilsport for all other games. Given the deflated feelings and irritated grumbles coming out of the blue half of Manchester this season, you’d be forgiven for thinking that their season was all but over. However, going into the last 18 games of the season, they find themselves only 3 points behind leaders Arsenal. What’s more, those two tiny specs in their rear-view mirror are actually Chelsea and rivals United.
January’s important for every club, but it feels absolutely crucial for Manchester City. The positivity that followed the expensive summer acquisitions of Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling has been off tempered by a catalogue of defensive calamities and, worst of all, the revelation that Sergio Aguero’s hamstrings are apparently made of nothing but glass and chewing gum.
With the impeding departure of Manuel Peliggrini, the club looks to be heading towards a painful era of torch-passing.

The inquest into Newcastle United’s capitulation at The Etihad Stadium last weekend continues to rumble on. However, the reason for The Magpies’ second half collapse has been staring us all in the face for some time…
Steve McClaren’s hair is to blame, and here’s why…
No one knows what was said in that United dressing room at half time; although we can surmise that Steve doused the majority of his squad in booze and sleeping pills at the very least as the Magpies proceeded to stop everything they did so well in the first period.
Standing at around 5 ft 10 inches tall Steve isn’t the tallest guy around, so one thing we can guarantee is that his team talk was conducted with the entire squad up on their feet. Why? Because they followed a tactical framework that mother nature has laid upon the former England manager’s bonce.

To steal a phrase from page one of Michael Owen’s book of Premier League cliches, yesterday’s matchup between Newcastle United and Manchester City was a game of two halves.
The first period saw the away side well on top. The black and whites continued with their new fearlessly bullish approach that worked so well against champions Chelsea a week prior. Steve McClaren’s side weathered an early storm to take the lead through a stooping Aleksandar Mitrovic header. They should have doubled their lead but a tap in for the Serbian was wrongly ruled offside, before the 21-year-old had a one-on-one brilliantly saved by the toe-end of Joe Hart.
All was going well.
One thing I noticed sitting in the Etihad’s press box was how United’s touchline management team of McClaren and Paul Simpson were conducting their business.

Well that all escalated very quickly. No sooner had Newcastle United resurfaced for the second half with the scores all level – after a very industrial, yet classy first period where they even took the lead – they were 4-1 down and out of the game.
Five goals from Sergio Aguero swayed the tide in Manchester City’s favour after United, rather sickeningly after what happened in the second half, could have easily been a few goals up in the first half.
New signing Aleksandar Mitrovic – who opened the scoring with a stooping header early on after great work from Kevin Mbabu and Georginio Wijnaldum – could have had a first half treble after a tap in was wrongly ruled out for offside, before a glorious chance save by the toe-end of Joe Hart thwarted him once again.
Those misses cost United as City equalised in the moments leading up to half time.

It’s nearly here. FIFA 16 is ready for release towards the end of September, and just to whet your appetite, you can now try out the hotly-anticipated demo version of the game.
Alongside the demo though, game-makers EA Sports have recently confirmed player ratings for a host of clubs in the new game. The list includes the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain and European champions Barcelona.
Each outfit boasts a stream of world-class talent, and even before the main release of FIFA 16 you’re able to test the game out – with the aforementioned clubs – in the demo.
But this article will bring you a selection of those confirmed ratings. Here, we focus on Premier League powerhouses Manchester City, who saw their title challenge fall short last season. They’ve played themselves in to the status as championship favourites recently though, after...

The first week of the season is always a hectic time for fans, teams, and football managers alike, especially those of the fantasy variety. You chose your eleven heroes to start the season, but did you make the right decisions?
There’s always a temptation to root out every member of your team who didn’t score a goal on the opening day to replace them with those who did, and you suddenly begin to have the occasional horrifying thought such as: ‘Should I drop Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero for Papiss Cisse and Arouna Kone?’
Don’t panic. The season has barely even started, and your players just need a chance to settle into the league, however, for the bold manager there are always deals to be done and changes to be made, even if it involves the highly risky -4 points per transfer over...

As entertaining as it is picking your team for another campaign of Fantasy Football, it’s always a difficult challenge to balance the cash.
While it’s tempting to employ a Galacticos-esque recruitment policy with your side and bring in some of the world’s top talent, there’s a draw-back to this approach.
Big names are always a safe bet for guaranteeing you a decent points haul, but it does leave you with gaps that can’t be filled with the remainder of your transfer war-chest. Instead, it might be wise to mix it up a little.
Alongside the likes of Sergio Aguero and Eden Hazard it’s worth adding players that rival fantasy football obsessives may have overlooked.
Players with a point to prove who may be available cheaply, for instance, or maybe hot prospects from one of the three recently promoted sides, could all...

Sky Sports may have just released its mightiest Premier League advert yet.
Pundit and ex-Arsenal player Thierry Henry previews the 2015/16 season, joined by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Eric Cantona as Henry revisits some of the greatest moments in the League's history.
Henry has imposed himself into scenes including glorious goal scoring and celebrations, a rather vocal Roy Keane arguing near the changing rooms and managers invading the pitch following wins.
Henry even runs alongside himself on the pitch - celebrating a win for Arsenal.
Some of the players featured include Rooney, Shearer and Cantona, alongside Steven Gerrard and Sergio Aguero.
Closing the advert, Henry watches Chelsea celebrate winning the competition and tells the viewer directly: "That is why this is the best league... in the world."

Manchester City’s Premier League crown has slipped from their grasp once more. Manuel Pellegrini and his cohorts were unable to stop a relentless Chelsea taking the title last season, and the plans are already underway to make a renewed bid at the league next term. They’re going to have to step it up in Europe, too.
Though after a number of disappointing displays in 2014/15, Manchester City’s players are due to take a collaborative hit on the new version of FIFA Ultimate Team when it arrives with September’s FIFA 16 release. There’s obviously one or two exceptions to the rule – looking at you, Sergio Aguero – but generally Manchester City’s team as a whole has declined since they last lifted the title.
And with Ultimate Team in mind, this article will look at each player poised to feature in the Manchester City squad next season.

The 2014/15 season has been thrilling from start to finish so far, from tussles at the top of the table between Chelsea and Manchester City; surprise packages like Southampton and West Ham threatening to qualify for the Champions League and almost half the division battling to avoid the drop. The likes of Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero have set the league alight, and it promises to be a thrilling last four months to the campaign.
While many players have thrived since August, whether that be big-money signings, players who were also brilliant last year or exciting youngsters, there are also some who have simply not got going at all. It’s worth stressing that this list isn’t necessarily the worst players the Premier League has had to offer this season, but more the ones you expected plenty from yet have seen very little.

Manchester City are enduring a woeful campaign. In a stark mirror image of their pathetic and laboured attempt at defending their Premier League crown two seasons ago, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have looked bereft of ideas and simply a shadow of the side who romped to the title in May, plundering 102 goals along the way.
Were it not for the blistering form of arguably the world’s most clinical out-and-out striker in Sergio Aguero, City would be even further off the pace in the race for the title, with a gap of eight points having opened up between themselves and the unbeaten Chelsea.
While they have faltered domestically, dropping points at Stoke, West Ham and Qpr, they have truly flopped once more in Europe’s elite competition – amassing a paltry two points from their opening four Champions League group games.

It was an outrageous moment, from a disarmingly brilliant, completely surprising revelation, and Newcastle fans will talk about it for a long time, but did Ayoze Perez’s flick goal against West Brom deserve more acknowledgement?
https://vine.co/v/OizIO50aF1L
Alan Shearer has already said that had it been Sergio Aguero who scored the goal we would be talking about it for weeks, and it seems that the Spaniards audacious back heel isn’t quite getting the massive reaction it should be.
The trick is an incredibly difficult thing to master, particularly given the size of the target he had to hit (anywhere else and Ben Foster would have been able to reach it), and for a young import to do that in just his second league start is unthinkable. If you’re Zlatan Ibrahimovic, that type of goal is your bread and butter – for Newcastle fans,...

Despite being Arsenal through and through, Paul Merson has used his weekly predictions column for Sky Sports to suggest the Gunners’ biggest rivals are in for an easy ride this weekend. Unsurprisingly – for anyone other than Alan “Champions League” Pardew – Merson thinks that Spurs will walk over Newcastle in the same way that they themselves were brushed aside by Man City last week.
Merson says Spurs will win 3-0 against Pardew’s team, despite the manager and several players suggesting that Newcastle have now turned a corner – and it’s because the hard-fought, but far from impressive victory at St. James’ Park distracted from the real issues with the team:
“Tottenham came up against a top-drawer centre-forward in Sergio Aguero last weekend, but I expect them to win this week. If you look beyond that they beat Southampton and drew with Arsenal, so the results haven’t been too bad.

As heartbreaking as it might be to admit for some Spurs fans (some have been less sympathetic), it may well be time to admit that Roberto Soldado’s time is up at the club.
After arriving in the summer of 2013 from Valencia for a costly £26 million, Soldado was expected to be the twenty-goals-a-season striker the club needed. That didn’t happen – he scored just six Premier League goals in his first campaign, only two of which were from open play – but many people were happy to put that down to needing time to settle and were hoping he’d come out this season with all guns blazing.
That hasn’t happened either. He has yet to score in the Premier League and has managed just two goals in all competitions – having scored against Ael Limassol in the Europa League and against Nottingham Forest in the Capital...

Hot on the heels of news that Man Utd had been made 1/1 favourites to sign Falcao, it looks like the Colombian might be on his way to Manchester, but not to sign for Louis Van Gaal.
According to Sky Sports, rumours have emerged that there is a private jet waiting at Nice airport to fly the Monaco striker across to England, to speak with Man City ahead of a potential move. Alvaro Negredo has already been linked with a move away from the club, after finding himself pushed down the pecking order by Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero, and City could replace him astonishingly well.
Sky Sports say that the deal is likely to be a slow burning one, as Falcao’s agent attempts to play off the interested parties against each other, in order to get him as much money as possible.

Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko could start despite an injury scare during his side’s 3-1 win over Liverpool on Monday while strike partner Sergio Aguero is in line for his first start of the Premier League season. However, new signing Eliaquim Mangala is not yet ready to play.
Stoke should have Bojan Krkic at their disposal with the on-loan forward returning to training on Thursday following a rib injury. Phil Bardsley is a doubt with a knee problem while defensive colleague Geoff Cameron also faces a spell on the sidelines with an injury of his own.
Key Stats
Manchester City have won seven successive league games at home to Stoke, including all six previous encounters in the Premier League without conceding a goal.
City have managed seven consecutive league wins – two shy of their club record, set in 1912.

The first major event match of the Premier League season is already upon us as the Champions face the close runners-up for the title of this season’s early pace-setters. Sadly, it might be a little early in the season to see the best of the teams, but it’s sure to be a hotly contested affair nonetheless.
Liverpool will be hoping to put on an impressive show for brand new signing Mario Balotelli, whose arrival was confirmed today, though unfortunately there will be no hyper-charged return to City for the Italian, as he wasn’t signed in time.
So far, City look the better side, having beaten Newcastle at a canter, but Liverpool looked a little out of sorts against Southampton. But with Lazar Markovic and Alberto Moreno expected to play a part, this might...

Manchester City have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on transfers since Sheikh Mansour and his Abu Dhabi United Group’s multi-million pound takeover of the club in 2008, with over £1 billion being spent within the first three years of ownership alone, according to reports.
Money has been no object where the middle east private equity company are concerned and they wasted no time in making their financial muscle known with the 2009 summer transfer window ending with City as the biggest spenders in the Premier League, bringing in the likes of Gareth Barry, Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, and Joleon Lescott.
The club’s transfer policy of ‘spend, spend, spend’ whatever the cost has reaped its rewards, with the Citizens winning two Premier League titles in the six years since the takeover – in 2012 and 2014. Some of the world’s greatest...

Everton are not only about to pull off one of the coups of the season, but also of the club’s entire history, as they close in on the eye-wateringly (but reassuringly) expensive capture of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.
With confirmation expected in the next few hours, the player has taken to social media to tweet out a picture of him on board a plane – reportedly headed for Merseyside – carrying the caption “Time to write a new chapter….” That new chapter will cost Roberto Martinez’s traditionally frugal team around £24m, earning Chelsea a £5m mark-up on a player they’ve never given a chance to, and who was unthinkably not deemed of a sufficient quality to actually play for them. The finances of the football world continue to baffle.

Chelsea are a club used to getting what they want. Ever since the £140 million take-over by Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich in 2003, money has not been an object for the London outfit, one of English football’s most profligate sides of the 21st century.
Abramovich’s well-thumbed chequebook has been used to persuade some of the world’s best players to join the Stamford Bridge revolution over the past decade, with the likes of Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and more recently Diego Costa pulling on a Blue jersey.
The players they have signed has understandably made all the back pages of the Sunday tabloids, with Abramovich signing no fewer than 89 players as a cost of £905 million since his takeover. But it’s the players he didn’t sign that get the less publicity.

This sport is littered with winners and losers. Football’s most coveted prize has eluded the likes of Gianluigi Aguero, Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for years. At the same time, these perennial winners must look on in disgust at some of the sub-standard players who have got their hands on the trophy in recent years, planting their unworthy lips upon the Holy Grail of European football.
Through no fault of their own, some of these players simply don’t possess any of the class, ilk or aura one might have associated with the Champions League winners. Whether it was simply a case of a squad player having been called on due to a spate of injuries, or rather a then-young gun thrown into the foray of a Cup-winning side, before being found out later on in their career.
‘’The high point of my career was winning the Champions League.

Netherlands could be without Robin van Persie for tonight’s semi-final World Cup clash against Argentina. The Manchester United striker is struggling with a stomach complaint. Midfielder Nigel de Jong could feature, however, after recovering from a groin strain that threatened to rule him out for the rest of the tournament.
Argentina have injury woes of their own with Angel di Maria sidelined with a thigh injury. The winger may recover in time to feature in the final however should his country make it through to the last round. Striker Sergio Aguero is back in contention after recovering from a thigh injury of his own while defender Marcos Rojo is free for selection after serving a one-match suspension.
(BBC)
Key Stats
Argentina’s victory over the Netherlands in the 1978 final is the only time they have beaten the Dutch in eight meetings in all competitions (D3, L4).

Ever since the Abu Dhabi United Group’s £200 million buyout of the club in 2008, Manchester City have been one of the Premier League’s most active sides in subsequent transfer windows, with £300 million being spent on new players in the first three years of the new regime alone.
The likes of Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, Carlos Tevez and David Silva have been brought in to spearhead the Citizen’s ground-breaking ascent to the top of the English game in recent years, as the Sky Blues have dramatically transformed from midtable also-rans to Premier League champions.
Money has not been an object in persuading some of the world’s best footballers to join the Etihad revolution, but not every transfer City have made in the last six years has been successful, and some very strange decisions indeed have been made by the top brass at Etihad Stadium.

It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero or Robin Van Persie score a world class goal or grab a hat-trick in the Premier League. It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of David Silva, Aaron Ramsey or Juan Mata slot a perfectly weighted through-ball to assist one of these goals. It doesn’t really surprise us when the likes of Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard or Eden Hazard produce that moment of magic to change a game.
But which players are capable of exerting their own special influence on a game, yet go largely unnoticed in comparison? Which players are perhaps not so well-known or recognised, yet are equally important to their clubs?
Claude Makelele (above), formerly of Real Madrid and Chelsea, is perhaps the most striking example of a player whose importance to teams throughout his career,...

English football audiences may like to think that they have an insight into the players likely to feature at this summer’s World Cup, with 16% of all the players in the tournament playing in England. Only Italy, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Russia have no players currently playing in England, although the first three all have players with plenty of English league experience (Russia are unique at the World Cup in having all their players play in their home league).
Because we see them deliver brilliant game changing performances throughout a highly competitive season, we have a sense that Luis Suarez, Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero will star in Brazil. But will they? Might the match winning moments equally come from someone else entirely?
As anybody who remembers the brief and wholly disappointing post-usa ’94 English league careers of Florin Raducioiu or Tomas Brolin can attest to,...

Sick kids in a pediatric ward are almost guaranteed to be charming, heartwarming and occasionally break your heart with very little effort, and that seems to be the goal of the Steven Spielberg-produced "Red Band Society," which will debut on Fox this fall. Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer stars as a cranky nurse who probably has a marshmallow center we haven't seen yet, or at least haven't seen in this trailer for the show. This seems to be "The Breakfast Club" with a generous sprinkling of cancer, comas and heat problems. With Spencer on board, the bar is set high from an acting perspective, and the trailer suggests these kids won't let the saccharine level get too high. At least the series has a model from which to draw material. "Polseres Vermelles" is the Catalan television show on which "Red Band Society" is based, and it was inspired by real life...

Despite recording impressive back-to-back wins against Liverpool and Manchester City last season, Chelsea were still unable to win their first Premier League title since 2010.
The Blues defeated the 2013-14 champions and runners up home and away and despite a late surge, were still unable to overhaul the two North West teams.
And a big part of the reason why is that Chelsea finished with the lowest goal difference (44) of the top three sides, with Liverpool (51) and City (65) outscoring the Londoners.
Liverpool and City netted an incredible 101 and 102 goals each last season compared to the 71 managed by Jose Mourinho’s men, who had striker issues throughout the campaign.
The problems riddling Fernando Torres persist, with the Spaniard scoring just five league goals, while Demba Ba clocked up the same tally in the Premier League with Samuel Eto’o getting nine.

Edin Dzeko continued his fine goal scoring form as Manchester City moved within touching distance of their second Premier League title in three seasons.
During an initially frustrating night for City, all their goals came in the second half, Dzeko netting twice, with Stevan Jovetic and Yaya Toure getting in on the act to bring up 100 league goals for the home side.
Manuel Pellegrini’s team dominated possession throughout the encounter and were worthy winners in the end, despite a spirited defensive performance from Villa.
The victory means that City can seal the Premier League title with victory over West Ham on Sunday, although given their superior goal difference a draw should be enough.
City went into the match having made two changes from the side that beat Everton on Saturday, David Silva and Aleksander Kolarov replacing Gael Clichy and the injured Sergio Aguero.

Update: Fox has made it 3-for-3, picking up all three of its drama pilots with a series order to Red Band Society, starring Octavia Spencer, from Amblin TV and ABC Studios. It explores with dark humor the daily life of a group of teenage kids living in a hospital who become unlikely friends. Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini defended flop Edin Dzeko after the striker missed a sitter against Stoke.
City were 1-0 up against the Potters at the time after Yaya Toure had bundled in Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross and Dzeko was gifted a gilt edged chance to make it two moments later when Jesus Navas squared for the Bosnian to tap in from four yards.
But the striker got his feet in a tangle and miscued his shot when presented with an open goal, and kicked the post in frustration afterwards.
The miss further highlighted the Citizen’s problems in front of goal, after firing blanks in three of their last four games prior to this in the absence of the injured Sergio Aguero.
City have the highest goals tally in the topflight with 69 for, but they failed to get on the scoresheet against Barcelona,...
