“Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “No Time to Die” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” are among the nominees for this year’s Golden Reel Awards, presented by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse).
“Dune,” a frontrunner in the Oscar race for best sound, leads the way with three nominations for outstanding achievement in sound editing including feature effects/foley, feature dialogue/Adr and feature underscore.
“It’s been a fantastic year for sound, and we look forward to celebrating the incredible work sound editors have performed for movies, television, games, documentaries and other creative media last year,” said Mpse president Mark Lanza. “We are excited this year to recognize Ron Howard with our Filmmaker Award and Chic Ciccolini as our Career Achievement recipient. Building on the success of our first-ever virtual ceremony last year, we are planning an even more spectacular night of fun, surprises and great achievements in sound.”

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Will This April Dump Weekend See Any New Movie Open Over $10 Million?
After the decent opening of last week’s The Fate of the Furious--though not quite as much as I predicted--it’s going to be hard for any new movie to make a mark against its second weekend even if it drops 55% or more this weekend, which is very likely.
Probably the best bet to make money this weekend is the thriller Unforgettable (Warner Bros.), which pits Kathryn Heigl against Rosario Dawson and is the directorial debut by producer Denise Di Novi (Crazy, Stupid, Love). It also stars Geoff Stults as the ex-husband of Heigl’s character Tessa, who becomes engaged to Dawson’s Julia, making her the stepmom to the former’s daughter,...

Z Team Films Presents The Release Of
“Die Fighting” Nation-wide On Demand November 4
On November 4, Gravitas Ventures will unleash Z Team Films’ martial arts action film Die Fighting on Video on Demand throughout North America, reaching over 100 million homes. Die Fighting stars Fabien Garcia, Laurent “Lohan” Buson, Didier Buson, Jess Allen, Dave Vescio and Xin Wuku. The movie is directed by Fabien Garcia and is produced by Laurent Buson.
The trailer looks action packed showcasing some great fight scenes and choreography. Hard hitting, bone crushing and maybe some skull breaking moments, the camera angles during the fights are well done and it seems the actors involved can all thrown down some great moves. I will certainly be checking this low budget movie out on the release on November 4th 2014.

If it feels like we’ve been waiting a while for Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s latest, The Young And Prodigious T.S. Spivet, that might be because it has been touring European festivals and release dates before heading over here. The UK trailer is now online. Switching locales from his usual Euro haunts, the new film finds Jeunet and co-writer Guillame Laurent adapting Reif Larsen’s novel for the tale of the titular youngster. T.S. Spivet (Kyle Catlett) lives on a remote ranch in Montana with his parents (Helena Bonham Carter and Callum Keith Rennie), his sister Gracie (Niamh Wilson) and his brother Layton (Jakob Davies).A gifted child with a passion for science, T.S. has invented a perpetual motion machine, for which he has been awarded the prestigious Baird Prize by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Unfortunately for the awarding committee, no one realises that their...

A little less than a year ago, news arrived that Amelie / Micmacs filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet was ready to jump into his next job, and, even more excitingly, back to English for his first film since that one we don’t really talk about. You know, the one set in the Alien universe… But all eyes are now on The Young And Prodigious Spivet, which has just added Helena Bonham Carter and Kathy Bates to its cast. Jeunet adapted the script from Rief Larson’s novel The Selected Works Of Ts Spivet, working with regular collaborator Guillaume Laurent.Spivet revolves around the titular youngster (Kyle Catlett) a boy boasting extraordinary navigation and other skills who leaves his father (Callum Keith Rennie) and the rest of his family behind in Montana to head out on a cross-country quest to the Smithsonian in Washington to receive a prize. While Jeunet has said that...

[1] Hot off two of the year's most buzzed-about performances in Albert Nobbs and Martha Marcy May Marlene, Glenn Close and Elizabeth Olsen have signed on to star in Thérèse Raquin. Charlie Stratton is writing and directing the erotic thriller, which is based on a 19th century novel and play by Émile Zola. Olsen will lead the cast as the titular young woman, who's pushed into an unhappy marriage by her overbearing aunt (Close). Thérèse eventually falls into a passionate affair with her husband's friend Laurent, with destructive consequences for all involved. Close has reportedly been attached to the film for years, though Olsen's involvement appears to be a recent development. Thérèse Raquin is scheduled to begin shooting this spring. [Entertainment Weekly [2]] After the jump, David Schwimmer gears up to kill people and Saoirse Ronan gets another love interest for The Host. Amanda Seyfried (Red Riding Hood) and Mark Ruffalo (the new "Hulk" in The Avengers) will appear in the Jesse Eisenberg-starrer Now You See Me. The story is about a pair of illusionists (Eisenberg and a yet to be cast actor) who pull of bank heists in front of audiences as part of their performance, showering the crowd with money. The FBI is after them but can't prove anything. Ruffalo will play the FBI agent on the case. Seyfried will play the brains behind how the illusions are pulled off. Inglourious Basterds star Melanie Laurent will play the magician's assistant. "Lost" scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Cowboys & Aliens) wrote the script and Louis Leterrier (who incidentally directed 2008's The Hulk) is directing.

"With his Bud Cort haircut and morbid sensibility, Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is too smart for Swansea, Wales, an industrial city mired in some seriously mid-80s Thatcherite doldrums," begins Vadim Rizov at GreenCine Daily. "The trouble with Oliver is that he knows he's clever, which could justify anything: surreptitiously monitoring his parents' sex life, taunting an overweight girl to make local cutie Jordana (Yasmin Paige) notice him as a real livewire, or trying to trash the house of downhill neighbor Graham Purvis (Paddy Considine) who may be having an affair with mom (Sally Hawkins). Fortunately, Submarine, Richard Ayoade's feature debut, is aware of Oliver's self-justifying nature and the ways it could warp him…. Acutely aware of the long tradition of films about disaffected young men coming to terms with themselves, Ayoade doesn't duck the precedent: instead, like Oliver…, he nods to seemingly every single precursor. There's a 400 Blows-quoting dash across the beach,...

We all agree that the planet is in a perilous position. But what is the best way to save it? We name the 20 activists, filmmakers, writers, politicians and celebrities who will be setting the global environmental agenda in the coming year
From David Attenborough to Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Town movement, the Observer Ethical Awards has honoured many movers and shakers in ecological and social justice. So it seems fitting to launch our sixth awards by profiling the 20 global figures who'll exert influence in 2011. For those on our list, the coming year might best be described as "take your partners" time, as activists and corporates scramble for power – and we're predicting some unlikely marriages ahead. Commentators have noted that big business is taking an unprecedented interest in the environment and are pushing for conservation capitalism. The really big decisions from the climate-change conference in Cancun have effectively been...

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.
Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.
There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles,...

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet Writer: Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Guillaume Laurent Starring: Dany Boon, Dominique Pinon, François Berléand, Albert Dupontel The year is 1979, Bazil’s (Dany Boon) father is blown to bloody bits while dismantling a mine in the Sahara (this ain’t no Hurt Locker); his mother subsequently has a complete mental breakdown. Next, Bazil escapes from a repressive Catholic orphanage. We find him years later, now an unabashed cinephile (ala Quentin Tarantino), working as a clerk in a video store. One night while mimicking the The Big Sleep verbatim, Bazil is caught in the crossfire of a shootout. At this moment, we dissolve into the opening credits of what seems to be a film within a film. (Is Bazil dead? In which case…is everything else all a dream?) With a bullet lodged in his head, Bazil’s surgeon is left with two options: remove the bullet (reducing Bazil to a...

Anna Kendrick has really struck the gold with her Natalie Keener role in "Up in the Air". Having won the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress and been nominated at the 67th Annual Golden Globes, the actress who plays Jessica Stanley in the "Twilight Saga" series is nominated for another prestigious awards, the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
On Thursday morning, December 17, the 24-year-old has been named among the nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. For the title, she will be competing against fellow "Up in the Air" star Vera Farmiga as well as other
nominees, Penelope Cruz of "Nine", Mo'Nique of "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" and Diane Kruger of "Inglourious Basterds".
Beside Anna Kendrick, the Screen Actors Guild also put her co-star and leading
man of the drama movie George Clooney for the Best Actor category.

Next year's list of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations puts three films and three television shows under three categories. In terms of number, critics' choice "Up in the Air" is battling it out with "Inglourious Basterds" and "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" while "30 Rock" gets heavy competition from "Dexter" and "The Closer".
The nominees that were read out on Thursday, December 17, also revealed that several actors receive multiple nominations. In motion picture category, Penelope Cruz earns two for starring in "Nine". In television, Tina Fey scores also two for being the lead of "30 Rock". Her co-star Alec Baldwin is also having two chances to walk away with an award.

The morning the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 16th annual SAG awards. The actual ceremony will be held Saturday, January 23rd. There are a lot of gay-faves on the list of nominees.
For starters, Colin Firth picked up a nomination for A Single Man,and Sigourney Weaver is in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries thanks to Prayers for Bobby.
Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.
And surprisingly (at least for me) the cast of True Blood is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning just two days after the 2010 Golden Globe Nominations giving us plenty to chew on heading into the weekend. As for surprises I can say there are really only a couple.
First off, one nod that's not really a surprise is the one that went to Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we are talking about actors nominating actors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a nomination for her performance in Inglourious Basterds is a bit of a surprise, especially as she's beating out her co-star in that film Melanie Laurent, not to forget Marion Cotillard in Nine, both performances I believe are more deserving. Don't expect Oscar to follow suit with that choice.
The other nominations causing me to scratch my head...

Opening the fest is the North American premiere of Emmanuel Mouret's French sex comedy Please Please Me! (which I think should logically be picked up for the U.S. market - see trailer here) and the ten day fest will be closing with the North American premiere of Radu Mihaileanu's The Concert - a Weinstein Co. title starring Melanie Laurent that will most likely open sometime early in 2010. - Now in its 15th year, Montreal's Cinemania Film Festival, one of North America's better French language fests has unveiled its 30-title roster with its usual mix of films from the big four (Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Toronto) and select tiles from the Rotterdams, Locarnos, Karlovy Varys and Sundances. We haven't seen anything yet. Or not much of it at least. Particularly when it comes to Oscar's Supporting Actress race. With so many presumed giants on their way whose cast lists tilt female (Nine, The Lovely Bones, Up in the Air, Precious) it's quite possible that not one future Oscar nominee has arrived in theaters yet. That's kind of a shame for those of us who enjoy actresses year round.
If you had a ballot sitting in front of you right now, for example, and the only films that were eligible were films that had already opened (at least on the coasts -- we'll cheat and include next week's Precious) which supporting performances would be on your ballot? The pickings might be arguably slim but I'd probably choose from these ten. Which boxes would you check off?
Marion Cotillard, Public Enemies
Diane Kruger and Melanie Laurent Inglourious Basterds
Kerry Fox,...

This was a good summer for movies. I find it increasingly difficult to differentiate how great one summer is from the next. Last year there was “Dark Knight,” “Wall-e” and “Iron Man.” Before that there was “Transformers, “Bourne Ultimatum,” and “Stardust.” Each year has a handful of great summer flicks, but this summer seemed to really stand apart as having a great lineup of blockbusters and surprises.
Here are my top 10 films of the summer of 2009 on this week in “Scene Selection.”
10) ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince‘ was an impressive spectacle with the effects and camera work to wow, but ultimately the plot lacked something to make it truly great. It did deliver on great characters, and the angst of a teenager. It is one of the best in the series, ranking second to “Prisoner in Azkaban” in my opinion. Look out for “The Deathly Hallows” next year.

- Why Warner Bros. is mum on release date details for Jean Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs à tire-larigot is a mystery to me. Judging by the trailer, this has got all the qualities we found in Jeunet's previous films Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain and A Very Long Engagement - the color palette, the almost fantastical approach to the moving camera comedic elements with a sense of humor - it also features Dany Boon who replaced Jamel Debbouze and his big ego (Boon's comedy Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis was a huge money maker in French theaters last year). With an October release set for France, the big question becomes will we be seeing this at the premium autumn film festivals such as Telluride, Tiff and/or Venice? My guess is yes. Co-scripted by Guillaume Laurent and Jeunet, this is a satire on the world arms-trade that sees a man and

As I recently posted, Channing Tatum is featured in the May 2009 issue of Empire Magazine (aka "The Hot Issue").
In what's been dubbed "The Hot List", Empire Magazine is letting us know about the people we "can't afford to miss out on in 2009 and who are set to go stratospheric in the 2010's - the stars with the talent, the taste and more often then not the sheer gorgeousness to change cinema over the next few years".
Here's what Empire had to say about why Channing has the credentials to make both this and next year's list:
"...like [Marlon] Brando in 'On the Waterfront': he seems a little confused and a lot angry. He's vital if raw in 'Stop-Loss', muscular (and fearless) in 'Step Up', and brilliant in 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints'. He teams with 'Saints' director Dito Montiel again for underground scrap flick 'Fighting',...

The famous novel "Life of Pi" may finally live in movie theatres. Variety reports that Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee is in talks with Fox 2000 to direct an adaptation of the book. The novel, (for those of you who didn't have to read it in high school), is about a lone survivor of a freighter that has sunk. He shares a lifeboat with a hyena, an injured zebra, a Bengal tiger, and a hyena. Gil Netter of Marley and Me is set to produce. Before Lee, the project had seen many faces. At one time, M. Night Shyamalan was in talks to do the film. Then, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Amelie, had worked on an idea for the project with collaborator Guillaume Laurent. Ang Lee will supervise a new version of the script...

The trades are reporting that Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) is in talks to direct Life of Pi, an adaptation of Yann Martel's coming-of-age survival tale that Fox 2000 is developing with producer Gil Netter (Markey & Me). The story revolves around a youth who is the lone survivor of a sunken freighter and winds up sharing a lifeboat with a hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan and a hungry Bengal tiger. The novel was published in 2001 and won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for Fiction the following year. This isn’t the first time Hollywood has tried to bring the story to the screen. Scribe Dean Georgaris (Paycheck) previously penned a screenplay and both M. Night Shyamalan and Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) expressed interest in making the film. Most recently, French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who wrote a script with his Amelie collaborator Guillaume Laurent, was looking to direct but dropped...

- Not sure what the title refers to (Micmacs are Native Indians) but Jean-Pierre Jeunet's next is shaping up to be a sort of Andrew Niccol's Lord of War - a satire on the world arms-trade. Warner Bros. has picked up the world rights to Micmacs à tire-larigot - this is Jeunet's long awaited return behind the camera since Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain and A Very Long Engagements.Co-scripted with Guillaume Laurent, the pic will star Jamel Debbouze(the dimunitive French actor with one working arm who also starred in Amélie as the greengrocer's assistant) and will begin shooting in April for a 2009 release....
