Wicked Mike's 100 Best Movies 2021
by wickedmikehampton | created - 25 May 2021 | updated - 16 Mar 2022 | PublicThese are the best English and foreign-language movies released internationally in 2021. Covid slowed production last year but delayed releases, from as far back as 2019, are finally colliding with our hearts and eyes. Another year for cinematic delight!
Best Movie: 'Hand of God' (Director Paolo Sorrentino)
Best Director: Ryûsuke Hamaguchi ('Drive My Car' & 'Wheel of Fortune')
Best Ensemble Cast: 'Belfast' & 'The French Dispatch'
Best Directorial Debut: Cristian Ponce ('History of the Occult')
Best Screenplay: 'C'mon, C'mon' & 'The Father'
Best Cinematography: 'Belfast' & 'Hand of God'
Best Comedy: 'Shiva Baby'
Best Family: 'Cruella'
Best Heart-Warmer: 'Language Lessons'
Best Action: 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'
Best Animation: 'Mad God'
Best Happy Romance: 'My Missing Valentine'
Best Drama Romance: 'The Worst Person in the World'
Best Social Impact: 'Pleasure' & 'New Order'
Best Feminist: 'Ninjababy'
Best Indie: 'Silent Machine'
Best Thriller: 'The Feast'
Best Tearjerker: 'Our Friend'
Happiest Movie: 'Free Guy'
Quirkiest Movies: 'Taipei Suicide Story' & 'Dinner in America'
Favourite Character: Dane (played by Jason Segel in 'Our Friend')
Choosing a best actor is too difficult so I'm not going to. But those that compete are Albrecht Schuch ('Berlin Alexanderplatz'), Anthony Hopkins ('The Father'), Robin Wright ('Land'), Renate Reinsve ('The Worst Person in the World'), and Stephanie Hayes ('Silent Machine'). Will Smith delivered his career highlight in 'King Richard'. Johnny Depp was so good in 'Minimata' that it felt like a comeback. Vanessa Kirby was heartbreakingly realistic in 'Pieces of a Woman', and Nicole Kidman was dialectically bipolar and fantastic. The best child actors were Jude Hill ('Belfast') and Woody Norman (C'mon, C'mon). In fact, in the latter movie, Gabby Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix were terrific too.
A shout-out to Taiwan which made five terrific and genre-diverse movies - 'Little Big Women' (grief), 'Taipei Suicide Story' (loneliness), 'My Missing Valentine' (teen pregnancy), 'Dear Tenant' (LGBTQ crime drama), and 'Nina Wu (drama thriller).
Mexico competed with class war in 'New Order', the despairing coming-of-age 'Prayers for the Stolen', and three profound immigrant struggles - 'I Carry You with Me', 'I'm No Longer Here' and 'Identifying Features'.
